How IS that internship alex? Is it fun?
I'm kinda glad it's not gonna be starbuck's cause that place's dangerously addictive and expensive, so i could see a big chunk of my allowance going there. More food? Fine with me :]

No portfolio required... If you can wrangle 2 other people I recommend the apartments above the blockbuster/rabba across the street...I rather enjoyed them :) OK course..a little linear but if you work hard it leads to better courses.

Mmm, guys does any of you know an anatomy book by a hungarian artist? I heard his is the best one (a friends opinion), and i was wondering if any of you knew who that artist is and what's the book like?
Also if anyone has their own best in the "anatomy book" category, could you share?
*edit:
I've got no idea what might be wrong so i can't help but maybe posting here http://www.adobeforums.com/cgi-bin/webx/.ee6b366/ will give you your answer?

Hi guys.
I don't know if anyone here went to another school before Sheridan, but I was wondering if anyone knows just how much of a hassle it is to get an exemption from The 'communication' course and the General Elective?
I took four years of English in University. I'm really not feeling like I need this communications course :P

Don't move into these buildings. I lived in one of them for half a year then moved out because it was terrible. The landlords don't look after the property at all. The glass in our door to the balcony was broken and they wouldn't replace it. The pool never gets cleaned, it's disgusting. Some of my friends had broken toilets that they wouldn't fix either. There was a story on the news about them last year:

The other apartment buildings around the area are all much better.

Falcon - if you can get exempt... go for it. More time to enjoy the courses you want to focus on!
The rabba apartments are mostly students and the management has had some obvious issues, but there are a lot of other nearby apartments and student townhouses and such... just look around!

Thats the plan! I already learned all i want to about essay writing and such. I'm not really even concerned with the graduating thing, or the grades at this point. I just want to learn this skill, and I'm not going to do that as efficiently if i have to spend time on unrelated courses.
To those looking for a place to stay, I found what I consider to be a pretty sweet student house. (http://www.places4students.com/places/details.asp?schoolid=19&id=37458)
As far as i know they still have rooms availiable, guys and gals welcome.

Oh well, I'm gonna try anyway. It seems like a rediculous requirement to me. I'm not keen on the General Elective either. There's a crazy amount of red tape to go through just to get into this place o.O

I was also hoping to get past the Communications requirement. I just spent a year at the University of Alberta writing essays, and I was hoping I was done with it. :\
And I'm only getting to Ontario on August 22nd and was hoping to see a couple relatives throughout the province for a week, but the latest I could sign up for the placement essay was the 25th. Ah well.

I was going to read the whole thread... most likely my question has been answered already... then I saw how many pages there are... and what can I say, it seemed like work.
OK... here goes, I plan to apply for that impressive looking animation degree for Sept 2008. Doing art privately this year, so I have loads of time on my hands for the portfolio work. Question, what size do they want?
They mention a size requirement for the character design section, but nothing for life drawings etc etc etc. So can I do postcard size? :P
Also, my schooling is South African, not Canadian... so, is this a disadvantage for me? Or can we consider my foreign experience as an advantage? yay :D
Thirdly, I didn't do art in high school, now they talk about this art credit thing at M or Open level... I don't really have a concept of what this means :bashful:
Now I understand in Canada you can do what is called Adult learning to make up the credit... roughly a month class... we don't have these kinds of things in SA... does the fact that I'm doing art privately count or not? It's not curricula based, but all the principals are being taught... currently doing portrait in oils, have been working with charcoal, acrylic and pencils... My teacher holds a fine arts degree?
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Thank-you :D

I think my portfolio was 8.5x11.
Everything has its good side and bad side, if you are an internetional student you will have to spend a bit more money on tuition. If you are from africa, you better do extremely well on your animal life drawing. jk

WAAAAAAAA!!!!
Croiky... so, I do Art Fundamentals the first year, this good enough to count as the art credit I need to get into the animation degree right?
5 years of studying..... man, I'm going to be ancient by the time I'm finished... hehehehe....
I hate this term confusion... so used to school starting in Jan and ending in Dec... Its like another year and a bit before I'll even get to the studying... :|

Demonique, check online (http://www.rentersnews.ca/modules/StudentRentalGuide/details.asp?PID=166), it appears that all the utilities are included. I'd assume that the price is for the entire apartment, so it would be split between two people.

Nikola, I'm going to start a new sketchbook once I leave Nova Scotia. There have been enough changes in my life and art to this point that my current sketchbook doesn't feel like it's really 'mine' anymore. It's odd.
I'm accumulating a load art for when it indeed goes up. It will be epic.
But hey, by then, we can just critique each other in real life instead of spending a ton of time typing it all up! Oh boy. :3

I'm taking Fundies this coming Sept, but heard a lot of current and past animation students say it's kind of... crappy. >_<
Btw Nervous Disorder, I think you would follow a different credit requirements, since you're international student. Or, see if you qualify for mature student status, in which I think you'll just have to take an Eng sufficiency test and submit portfolio. Also, I suggest make your life drawings big, I think approx. 20 x 24 inches. The rest probably 8.5 x 11 =] yea.

Efei:
I graduated Art Fundies in the 05/06 year and, well, there's been a lot of talk about it in this thread over time, so you may already know some things about it. I'll just say a couple of quick things, however.
Art Fundies is a portfolio development program, specifically designed to assist students in further education in the arts. They're clearly aware the majority of people want to continue studies in either Animation or Illustration at Sheridan. (actually one thing I really loved was that the majorty of instructors weren't exactly pushy for students to return to Sheridan) However, from my experience many people change their plans and there's a huge withdrawl rate after first semester.
To get a lot out of the program, you really have to push yourself. Attend the extra life drawing sessions as many times as you can. They're really helpful. Also, continue with art you enjoy on the side and improve in that way as well. One thing to note though, is that you won't be doing any animating. (at least I didn't) Though there are some assignments geared towards students who wish to apply to Animation. (such as some anatomy drawings, optional 3D model/character turnaround, and some technical drawing assignments that may be helpful) [this is based on some assignments that I had though. I'm not sure how much the curriculum has changed since then]
I've heard many people say the program was pointless and that they didn't learn anything, but my experience was quite different. I learned quite a lot actually, and the majority of instructors were knowledgable and overall just awesome people willing to help any way they could. My drawing and painting skills improved by leaps and bounds while in Art Fundies. Previous to that I had no formal training in painting whatsoever.

Hi guys!
For those of you curious about the Comm test, here's what to do to see if you are supposed to take it.
First log into your Access Sheridan Account (https://access.sheridaninstitute.ca/http://hydra.sheridaninstitute.ca/amserver/UI/Login?gw=access.sheridaninstitute.ca&org=o%3Dsheridanc.on.ca)
Click on the Oasis option follow SA Self Service > Learner Services > Events
to 'Event Registration'. If you need to take the test, there should be something there that tells you so.
Ryn, if you don't have access to.. um.. 'access'.. you might want to talk to someone at the SSU or admissions. I think they only send out the letter with your password on it once. As i recall, mine never arrived, but i managed to get the password from someone over the telphone.
I'm excited! More than a tad worried though. I'm hoping someone at this school can teach an old dog new tricks.
(ie how not to suck at art, and how not to excel at procrastination).
Ryn
July 29th, 2007, 03:41 PM
Oh, FalconInverse, you are lovely. Doesn't seem that I need to take said test, yay! Thanks for the info, cheers!

July 29th, 2007, 06:04 PM
Hehe.. Congradulations to you then :)
I'd still recommend checking in with the SSU sometime in the next week or two, just to be on the safe side.
The people i've spoken to there are pretty helpful, and the office is occupied 7 days a week. Sometimes they'll send emails to your sheridan account, which you also access through 'Access'..
I dunno.. i'm very excited. I wish September would hurry up and get here! That's something i havn't been able to say since I was in grade 2..
If anyone is looking for a part time job, i might be hiring a whipping person.. the successful applicant would be good at yelling, own their own whip, and be availiable to kick my butt everytime they find me not doing art. ^^

Cheers Sir Sock. I remember when i ran into you at the school. You didn't strike me as the whipping sort..
Here's what the website says about timetables. The SSU said the same thing. Last week of August:
1. When do I get my timetable? How do I get my timetable?
You will be able to view your timetable two weeks before classes begin. Please remember, you will only be able to view your timetable if you have paid your fees. To access your timetable - log into AccessSheridan with your user name and password, and follow these links O.A.S.I.S. – Self Service > SA Self Service > Learner Services > Academics > View My Weekly Schedule. Your timetable is date sensitive; please make sure you fill in a date that falls after the start of term.
2. How do I make timetable changes?
You should always discuss your decision to change your timetable with a Student Advisor in the Student Advisement Centre (Trafalgar Campus – Room B104 and Davis Campus – Room B231) or with your Program Coordinator. If you decide to change your timetable, please visit the Office of the Registrar (Trafalgar Campus – Room D100, Davis Campus – Room B201, and Skills Training Centre – Room A1). During peak periods, you will need to book an appointment to meet with a Records Specialist to discuss your circumstances. Otherwise, you will be served on a first-come, first-served basis. All requests are considered on an individual basis and will be processed where possible. Please be advised your timetable is designed for your particular program, and not all requests can be granted.

hi everyone, i am patrick and i am going to graduate from german secondary school (gymnasium) in summer 2008. I intend to study animation at sheridan college after, but i am concerned about the following Admission Requirements:
http://www1.sheridanc.on.ca/programs/0607/pbaaa/index.cfm?catg_id=2
since i am german i do not know whether i meet the requirements.
especially the part about the "Senior-level Visual Art" problem because i do not have Art in my last year (grade 13) but i had it in grade 12.
i visited the sheridan college 2 weeks ago but they couldnt really help me because they did not seem to know anything about the equivalence between the german and the canadian school systems. thus i need to know, in case that i dont meet requirements, what alternative i have to fulfill them.
or might there be an exception for international students?
i have no clue...
i really hope someone of you can help me.
thank you in advance,

I really enjoyed last year's first meetup, something along those lines, though a bit more organized would be a good way for everyone to get to know the new faces. Early september sounds good to me, I'll be in Oakville by the end of August.
BTW amarryth I'd be interested in any info on the store, might as well start looking now. I'll send ya a PM.

Hey all, I am visiting Sheridan today :D I am in res right now. Our tour is at 1 pm today, so in a few hours.
Last night someone let us follow them to the building we needed to go to, so if you let some guy with a beard and a kid with lame glasses follow you to B127 or whichever I am in at about 1 in the morning, thank you! haha

hahah wow. When we were following him I was talking to my dad about how there are a bunch of people from Sheridan who go to ca.org and that he could have been one of them, that's awesome. Tell him we say thanks haha.
I am going to be at the computer animation summer short clip thing at 7 tonight, so if anybody see a short kid who looks like he is 14 in a red shirt and chicago cubs hat, that's me :D

Algebra, I showed him this thread and your posts :P .
JUST got back from TCAF! JESUS WOW! what a festival. Nothing says class like having a ton of comic artists showing their work in the same area as group of seven paintings. I met paul pope, and asked him politely to sign my 100% GN, and my issue of THB i had with me, though I dont think he was too keen on my KGB shirt! hahahaha
I saw james jean for the first time and had no clue he was this tiny asian dude! LOL did a double take.
Mike huddleston gave me some kickass critiques on some of my comic work, and I met becky cloonan of american virgin. On a side note, as we were walking back from TCAF, none other than mutherfuckin VERNE TROYER of mini me fame rode past on an electric scooter chair thing. CRAAAAAAAAAZY!!
Anybody else have any TCAF stories? anyone else go? IT WAS FREE! GO GO GO TOMORROW!

It was on the program description for first term, but it isn't on my class list.
Can anyone tell me about my instructors? I'm expiring for curiousomerity!

Falcon, if there is a 1st semester class on the program map that isnt in your schedule I'd suggest contacting sheridan about it soon. It might be nothing, but last year around this time Sheridan decided to list me as a part time student and only gave me half of the total number of courses on my schedule. Had to email and call them a couple times to get it straightened out. Oh and this schedule is most likely not finalized quite yet, they might make small or big changes all the way until the day before school starts, so make sure to keep checking every once in a while to make sure they didnt.

August 24th, 2007, 04:12 PM
Thanks Mr Malevolance..
I just got an email from Silvia about the course change.. this applies to all Fundies, just in case anyone is curious:
Some changes have been made to the Art Fundamentals program just recently by the School of Animation, Arts and Design. Your time table is correct, the Ideas and Images course, CULT17360, has been replaced by the Essential Communications Skills course.
Thank you,
Silvia
Being as i just took the silly english essay on Tuesday, my schedule is remains unsure of itself. I really hope i can drop that English component. With a degree in English from UofT, the concept of taking more English is rediculous to me.

i am going to randomly stick some questions about sheridan in here!
so i'm looking to go into the illustration course, but i'm wondering if i should just take the art fundies program first to see if it will better my chances
and if i do, is applying to illustration afterwards complicated?
also how do applications work? do i need a portfolio? an essay? i'm checking out the ocas site right now but i'm not sure
liquidtransience
October 5th, 2007, 09:33 PM
I've just started my first year of Illustration after completing Art Fundamentals and then basically taking a year off after that.
What to say...
You need to have the minimum education requirements listed, and then a portfolio must be submitted. The portfolio guidelines, etc. should be mailed to you after you apply, or they may even be listed online beforehand, I'm not 100% sure.
If you don't have any life drawing/painting background, it'll be very challenging to get in. Art Fundamentals will give you the life drawing classes (attend extra-life drawing whenever you can), and I believe it's still possible to get a tutor for about $20 for life drawing lessons/portfolio info from students currently in either Illustration or Animation.
Art Fundamentals won't necessarily "better your chances" unless you push yourself. Don't just do the minimum work assigned. Strive to learn more, attend those extra life drawing sessions, and have a blast doing it. It'll pay off. Also it's good because you can get a chance to see what the current students are doing in the program you wish to attend, and ask them questions about the admissions process and whatnot. The instructors are there too if you have any questions.
I found that my high school art curriculum was very weak in preparing me for post-secondary art education study, so Art Fundies did help a lot.
I hope I helped, I'm a little exhausted right now, so I'm also hoping it all makes sense. :P

i am going to randomly stick some questions about sheridan in here!
1. so i'm looking to go into the illustration course, but i'm wondering if i should just take the art fundies program first to see if it will better my chances
2. and if i do, is applying to illustration afterwards complicated?
3. lso how do applications work? do i need a portfolio? an essay? i'm checking out the ocas site right now but i'm not sure
Hi, I'm from the illustration program at sheridan. I'll give your questions a shot: :)
1. Good idea... although you may as well apply to illustration too and attempt the portfolio requirements. You'll be a better artist if you do, you'll have a better idea of what it takes, and who knows... you might be good enough to get in. Some people get in right out of highschool.
2. Afterwards meaning applying the following year to illustration? No, it's not complicated at all. Most people in art fundies either have aspirations for animation or illustration and spend much of their time in fundies working on the portfolio reqs for either goal. The teachers are used to this as well.
Many of the less-serious people usually develope different goals by the time christmas time roles around though.
3. After applying to the illustration program you recieve the portfolio requirements through the mail. The portfolio consists of a 4-part drawing test and then an option of A or B. They basically give you a choice of completing further assignments or simply submitting a portfolio of work you have previously made.
Your portfolio should demonstrate extremely competent drawing ability (drawing from life)
You're also going to want to submit a sketchbook full of drawings from life (it may also contain conceptual sketches and idea-ation)
Avoid things like anime, fantasy, science fiction, and emo-horrific drawings in the portfolio. Their evaluators get over-saturated in that stuff (especially anime) and dislike it.
Hope that helped!
Ken
PS. you can find more-detailed info on the portfolio reqs further back in this thread. Essentially the 4-part drawing test has always involved...
A still life of objects drawn twice with the second having some sort of creative transformation
A pen 'n ink drawing of a figure in an interior space of some sort
A drawing of a group of people in a public setting (such as a mall)
A freehand perspective drawing of a historical building that you draw from LIFE. They get a good chuckle out of the number of ontario applicants drawing the same view of the Paris eiffle tower (obviously people cheating from photos)

Hey guys, I have a quick question about Sheridan's fundamentals program. Is it really feasible for someone with no art background or training to go into this fundamentals course and do OK? I won't be overwhelmed will I, haha? :( I also wonder if with studying hard, am I really likely to be eligible for the illustration/anim programs after just one year in this program?
Also if anyone knows of any other good fundamentals or arts courses that would help my situation in the Toronto area. I'd like to hear them.
Many people have been at this for years when they start, so I feel I'll be in over my head. :nohope:
PM or respond in this thread is fine, thanks guys.

Hi Alystra. I'll do my best to answer your question as I took art fundamentals at sheridan and then went on to take illustration the year after. I'm currently in my 4th year of illustration.
Whether or not you'll be overwhelmed is a complicated question. I went into fundies right out of highschool -- and in highschool I could usually leave everything until the last minute, had most nights free of homework, procrastinated more time than I spent actualy working on stuff.
College (and fundies in general) was kind of a rude awakening from that. There wasn't alot of homework at first, but by thanksgiving I definitely had enough projects to stress me out. I was completely awful with time management, however.
The fundies course is designed from the ground up. If you pay attention to what the teachers say and give the assignments the TIME that they deserve, you will probably do fine. If you feel your abilities are weak you can get a drawing or painting tutor which is only $20 through the sheridan career center and you get this tutor for 10 hours (AWESOME DEAL)
You have the potential of getting into illustration or animation if you spend alot of time in after-hours figure drawing classes (totally voluntary to go to) and you get a tutor from whatever program you're headed to to help you out.
Most people on that first day of fundies are extreme novices... you don't have much to worry about. The only experience I had before going in was just a pile of sketchbooks I filled with cartoons since grade 4... and maybe a couple of realistic portraits done in the months before I moved out.
If you give it the Time, you'll do fine :P

I don't know anything about international student stuff. I grew up in Ontario so sorry I can't help you there.
You'll be able to find much-more-detailed respones further back in the thread... but basically....
Apply as close to Christmas as you can or whenever application services opens up... so just apply as soon as possible.. After you send in your application you'll get the illustration portfolio requirements in the mail.
Once that happens you have aproximately a month to complete them as all portfolios are due around the 1st of march (it's always been that way other years)
You either mail your portfolio in (photocopies and prints) or you bring it in in person (originals) on a day that you select. I think you're given a choice of 2 days on one weekend at the beginning of march.. Since you're from the states you'll probably mail it, I guess. They'll provide you with a deadline, but I'm pretty sure it's right around the very beginning of march.
Then you wait until the beginning of April for the results.
Note: I noticed last year that instead of getting portfolio requirements in the mail some people were just given a link to an online PDF... so that could happen again.
Good luck.

Hi,
Would it be at all possible for a current Sheridan illustration student to post their entrance portfolio? I think it'd be extremely informative for potential hopefuls to get a feel for the required entrance standards. Additionally, it would be a bonus if it was a scholarship winning entrance portfolio, as to illustrate the standards necessary for achieving awards.
Thanks

They dont really want digital work in the portfolio, though ive heard of a couple of times where they allowed it. I figure you might as well avoid the hassle and just do it all traditionally.

Hey fellas, I was considering applying for illustration in 2008 and i thought i'd get an insiders opinion first.
How are the teachers?
I've had bad experience with art teachers in the past ranging from decent to downright incompetent so i wouldn't want to waste thousands on this.
Secondly, how are those courses?
Also, I'm pretty sure i've already got the equivalents since i'm in Uni right now but what is this U or M level english class thing? And those Grade 12 subjects? I'm from Quebec and the school system is different here.
SirGreenSock
October 25th, 2007, 10:05 PM
Hey northdrow, hope i can help; Im in second year technical illustration now, so maybe the other years can help with what theyre getting.
The teachers seem to be like at most places; There are a couple of incredible teachers (ive been lucky to have had them in first year as well) who are incredibly knowledgable and can give you a lot, and like any other school there are some more mediocre teachers, but even these (with the exception of one ive been hearing about from the first years) are knowledgable people, so even if they arent as strong at teaching they can give you a lot if you get to them for 1on1 chatting.
Personally I enjoy almost all of my courses a lot, especially here in second year. Every single course will give you as much as you put into it really, personally i asked most of my teachers for extra work to be more challenged, but even without that the course load is good and i picked up a lot from it. This year I regret not getting as involved in some of the courses i liked less in first year cause now that im looking at the first years doing them im seein them as a lot more useful, which i think is a good sign.
The U or M english thing is a stupid Ontario educational system thing, its just 2 kinds of english courses you can take, I'd give them a call or email before to make sure of course.

I'm currently in first year Illustration and I have to say that so far, I'm just having a great time in the program. Most of the instructors are very knowledgable and helpful. There is one that I'm really iffy about, but I won't name names.
Everything I'm learning, I'm absorbing it and learning more and more on the side by myself. By attending extra-life drawing when I can and applying what I learn through various life drawing books by Vilppu, etc. I'm beginning to see a ton of improvement in that area especially. I'm taking what I learn from that and applying it even to my own character designs. So far I'm thrilled at how much I've improved in just a month and a half-ish.
I've found that a lot of my instructors are willing to help in any way they can. I was having a bit of trouble in Object Drawing class, and my instructor would stay sometimes an hour after class to make sure I understood everything. Great guy.
Anyway, just remember that you get out of it what you put in. But so far the environment is just wonderful, and I've met a ton of great people so far.

A query for the illustration/animation folks..
It seems to me I may be recieving a Digital Camera for my birthday this year (yayness!). The purchaser thereof wanted to know if i would be needing any particuar kind or variety of digital camera in the future, should i find my way into the illustration or animation streams at Sheridan.
Hence my question to you: Will I need any particular kind or variety of digital camera in the future, should i find my way into the illustration or animation streams at Sheridan?

-ugly lucking so that noone'll steal it at a party

Also, as far as i know you don't need a digital camera in Animation, i might be wrong, but i really don't think that it's one of the things they expect you to get.

There is no camera requirement at all in illustration for any of the clases. So any camera capable of taking decent photos of things to big to scan, good reference photos, and just general camerastuff is fine.

Well for the illustration portfolio:
A sketchbook full of practice drawing and working out ideas, roughs, etc extremely important and worth quite a few marks on the evaluation (as I recall)
Attend a figure drawing class.

Thanks for the advice, by figure drawing I take it you mean those uninstructed sessions that OCAD and TSA offer.
FalconInverse
November 4th, 2007, 07:30 AM
My first advice to you is to not let it sit.. even for a day. Do something portfolio-ish on a daily basis, and it seems a lot more manageable. Too many students just let it pile up, and it becomes a big ball of stress, when it doesn't have to be.
Figure drawing would probably be the backbone of any portfolio you'll be submitting to Illustration or Animation.
I think there are public access figure drawing classes somewhere in Toronto pretty much every day of the week.
The Gladstone Hotel (http://www.401richmond.net/gladstone/event-show.cfm?id=1995) generally offers figure drawing on Wednesday evenings, as does OCAD (http://www.ocad.ca/alumni/Studio_Programs.htm). OCAD also generally offers a morning session on Saturday.
TSA (http://www.tsa-art.ca/Courses/Discipline/View_All/335)holds class on Thursday and Friday Nights, as well as all day Sunday.
A somewhat obscure group called 'Artists 25' (http://www.torontoartsonline.org/content/view/full/11781)holds life drawing on Tuseday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
You can take Monday nights off (to practice perspective). Tell em Falcon said so. ^^

I live in res.
Pros:
Being close to class is nice. You get to sleep more, can go back to your room in a jiffy if you forget something, and don't have to lug big art supplies like newsprint very far.
Some of the facilities are nice. There's a small gym and a pretty nice movie room.
Good for meeting people, kinda? There are a some parties but they're mostly really lame. A bunch of people standing around drinking in a small kitchen? Oh boy.
There are some decent events every once and a while, but it isn't super exciting.
However, this could well be because I'm a workaholic and not really seeking to live up the archetypal college scene. I know some people who have had a ton of friends and social hookups through being in res, so it's ultimately about what you want from it.
Cons:
People in res are LOUD. Especially at night. I can't sleep without earplugs in, it's pretty awful.
Shit in my room breaks all the time. The plumbing and air conditioning are constantly getting busted.
Not having a good kitchen with a stove is terrible, but I cook all the time so it might not matter for you.
It's really expensive. I believe it works out to something like $680 a month or something. You can get a much nicer place off campus for that much.
Overall, I'd say if price isn't an issue, go for it. It's pretty nice, but not worth the hefty cost. Take this with a grain of salt, of course. I think a lot of this comes down to personal preference

Thanks for the feedback, Ryn.
I think money is a huge issue for me however if i won any scholarships or had enough money saved away that i could afford living away from home i think it might be a good investment. (as in for the convenience / facilities available )

Indeed all was good time. Hilariously enough, right after most people left my roomate returned home with twenty drunken friends and the party took off again in full swing. :O
Thanks for comin, drinking my booze and shitting on my walls and in my sketchbook everyone who showed up. For those who didnt; shame on you and there will be plenty more in the next semester (am i going to be sacrificing my house for every single one this year? :P)
n.contemporary - Ryn pretty much summarized all there is to it. If it means something to you, i dont know ANY second or later year students living in residence, simply because the harsh rules and high cost arent worth the convenience of going to school in flipflops in January. Last year i lived in a decent place for $450 (all utilities included), this year i have a better place for 520 (w/ utilities), both of which are a 10-15 minute walk from the school. Id recommend personally that if you live anywhere near oakville to scout the area and find a good place off campus.
think i got about an hour of sleep... now to clean the house :D

You could always call them about it, Algebra. I was constantly bugging the admissions folks with phone calls when I was applying, and they were always really helpful.
Don't be too worried if they seem to take a long time on updates, however. They're seemingly known to be a bit slow. :bashful:

Hi ! I'm currently a grade 12 student and probably going to Sheridan after finishing high school, I'm especially interested in Illustration course.
My question is, do I need to apply to art fundamental or straight into illustration?
And also if there's some basic information or tips for someone in my position, it would be nice too.
I can't go to check out the school in person, and the information in the web is just hard to find for me.
Thanks in advance guys ! :)
Edit: by the way, the high school I'm currently attending is in Nova Scotia.

Hey, I know most people who applied get a conditional acceptance and need to take an EPT. Where do I go to take and how do I take my English Proficiency Test?

You can apply directly to illustration if you want, although illustration is a degree program so you need the appropriate highschool credits to apply.
I suggest applying to art fundamentals anyways as a back-up plan.
Tips: Take a figure drawing course for pieces for your application portfolio.
Buy a nice thick hundred pager sketchbook and fill the thing cover to cover with hands, feet, faces, architecture, people in public, media experimentation, lots of drawing from life.
Sketchbooks are really important and are a crucial part to a successful application portfolio.
Hope that helped,
Ken

Hey, Ken.
I am applying to Sheridan's Illustration Program and am in the process of putting together a portfolio.
It is mentioned that you can submit a sketchbook but some of the profs said to only submit a selection of your sketchbook pieces stapled together or to submit a sketchbook but sticky note the pieces that you want them to look at (since they wont have time to look through all of it / you want to draw attention to your better pieces).
Do you think I should still attempt to fill an entire sketchbook, regardless?

It does sound like they might be changing the rules of submission a bit this year, for the sketchbook component of the illustration portfolio.
"Demonstrated visual investigation through the inclusion of developmental sketches, sketchbooks, or notebooks." Is what you are aiming for.
I think in previous years they wanted the sketchbook itself, but this year they might want the 'stapled selection' you were referring to.
Before you go tearing your sketchbook apart, best to wait for the official Portfolio guidelines for 2008. The ones on the web are still subject to change.
The answer to your question, of course, is that you should definetely fill your sketchbook if you can. Fill two! The more you draw, the more you have to choose from! :steph:

A full sketchbook is better than an empty one.
However, a couple things you should think about - they skim really quickly through them so as long as you are showing them what they want to see, you will be fine.
When I submitted my portfolio I mailed it in and just made a sketchbook with the most relevant pieces and works I thought they would like to see, so all killer less filler.
A nice sketchbook is great, but its really the sketches inside they see. You don't need 100 of the same thing because they can tell and see it right away from looking through a few sketches! It does however show that you're serious, draw a lot and practice!
Have a good holiday guys and good luck to all applying

In all honesty though its a good idea to start getting into the habit of keeping a sketchbook, it'll get you a long way both at sheridan and in improving personally. Dont force fill the sucker, have fun with it and lay down ideas and studies in there, it'll look better and be of more use to you to have an unfinished book of creative ideas and studies than a whole book of filler hand studies or something.

Well, it's really up to you what you think will give you the best presentation of your portfolio work.
However, when I got my evaluation back for how well I did on my application portfolio my sketchbook grade was nearly perfect... as was my 'presentation' grade.
I applied out of art fundamentals as did many people from my class. I was also a class rep and during one of our final meetings we discovered that alot of the A students in fundies had their applications rejected. Some of the teachers were really surprised at this.
After talking to a alot of rejected vs. accepted students during our final meeting in april it was discovered the many of the accepted students submitted a selection of figure drawing with a full sketchbook while the rejected students did not.
Some of the people who recieved a lousy grade in the sketchbook category submitted a small package of stapled roughs.
Keep in mind that the rest of your "portfolio" is to show your quality finished pieces.
you're right in that an evaluator is not going to look through every single page of your sketchbook individually.
I was told by a prof that they quickly flip through it really quickly. The purpose of the sketchbook is to show them that you draw alot and show them a large quantity of daily practice-- that you're passionate and teachable. ---That is loosely quoting one my first year teachers.
Doing a 'visual diary' is a big assignment during your first year ... it's also really important during your 3rd and 4th years of the program as some of the teachers will help you alot if you let them take a gander through your sketchbook.
In my opinion you should do a whole sketchbook... because a whole sketchbook done well is going to be far more impressive than a few stapled pages.
Demonstrated visual investigation through the inclusion of developmental sketches, sketchbooks, or notebooks."
Yeah, that was the same quote from my portfolio requirements years ago.
