hey everyone, i've applied to sheridan and i received a letter saying to go online imediatly because i need to find out deadlines and such but i cant seem to log in to access sheridan. anyway does anyone when the portfolios are supposed to be in? I'll be dropping mine off. thanks

I'm pretty sure you need to access your account regardless because they give you a set of specific times that you can choose from to take in your portfolio. You indicate a time by filling in a portfolio evaluation drop off form (which you need to bring/fax to the school asap). Mail in portfolios are due the 23rd, people who are physically bringing them in are due within the first week of March, I believe, just to ballpark it for ya. But you still need to access your account, it gives you delicious information.

I found that the Access Sheridan link provided in the letter didn't work, though I was able to get to it manually through the main page. Give that a shot.

Also I hope there will be more bake n' sketch dealies next year, I make the bestest nanner bread. :3

Hey Ian, you asked me to post what i did for my illustration drawing test, figured it'd be best to show it here.
I wasnt proud of it when i did it, nor am i now, but i did pretty well mark-wise.

i think thats it, if i forgot one lemme know.
Your folio is coming along well, on the first piece you oughta try and get more clarity, some line variation or such to get more depth to it. The second piece is stronger of the too. Are you sure its freehand? You must have a damn steady hand for those constuction lines. There are some stuctural issues, mostly with incline planes, but i doubt they will look that much into it, considering that mine was puree shit.

Ian... your group drawing is looking pretty solid.

You might try bringing in some gray-tone markers or a monochromatic watercolor wash next time you do one.. it'll help with the clarity as sir-greensock already critiqued.
We do alot of public sketching in 2nd/3rd year for life-drawing homework and alot of people use the markers/ink wash/watercolor with the black line.

You've constructed the building very nicely... but those final dark lines aren't really doing it for me. They look a little too thick and over-worked.
If when you start the line you stare at the point that the line is going to and don't look away as you move your pencil you can get far -straighter free-hand lines.

SirGreensock: Thanks for posting up your works from last year! I have a habit of reading into things too much and I was thinking the instructions they gave us were too ambigous. I also wasn't sure how much time I *needed* to put into these because my time is limited.

kennygeeze: Really? Damn...I went over them again when someone said I should have more line variety. I was thinking of adding tone to it as well but I'll wait. Perhaps on the group one though...we'll see.

Steady hand? nah, not so much...I guess you figure out tricks to get cleaner lines.

Edit: Finished another one! its going to be a photo finish to get this to Sheridan by the 23rd. c'moooon Canada Post!

I looked at it again and I think I see now why the lines are bothering me. It's actually very nicely drawn!
Take a look at the tower-like portion at the front of the house with the pointed roof. The portion of it that should be closest to the viewer is for some reason drawn with the thinner line... this is happening at certain points throughout the drawing. With a line drawing the planes that are closest to the viewer should have the boldest lines... I think that's the only thing that's making it look a little wonky... correct that and it'll be even stronger than it already is.

Still a hell of alot better than my drawing test though. Good job.

*Lies. LIES. These are all lies!!! :ninja:
I just want to show people that i respect the reason why i belong in animation, i just wish, to show, how much, i love, drawing and creating life all at the same time. After all, both the phallus standupis and clitoris dragonis are symbols of life and what is animation if not creating life. GIVING life.
I will not bow down before such lowly accusations of shallowene..ssnesness...sss. I shall go now, surrounded by light of truth and purity and choirs of singing angels.

Right. So there. ...Can i still get the drawring? Pretty please?

Efei I suggest putting in good observation drawngs, like figure studies and still lifes. They'll be looking for strong line and structural quality.

As for the DnD, the friday or saturday works either way for me... and lets actually get some booze this time else we lose the ability to actually call its a DnD.

Wow, I wish I knew who you people really were, so I could recognize you in the hallways. I'm in Art Fundies Core right now, by the way (Asian girl, curly hair?). I'm almost done my Illustration portfolio and a little under halfway through my Animation one. Sometimes I feel like I'm the only Fundy using Animation as my back-up program... (Don't hit me!)

As a long-time lurker of this thread, I'd just like to say that I probably learned more about Sheridan reading through these posts than most of the stuff in orientation. It was like a drama, when everyone was waiting for their results to come in. I laughed. I cried. I ate popcorn.

For the Illus. group drawing test, do they mind a grayscale wash? It sounds like a nice idea, but the teachers have us running scared with all the "THEY WILL REJECT YOU IF THEY EVEN SUSPECT YOU ARE USING PHOTOS WOOOOO". Now I know some people used photos and still got in, but I was wondering what they think about washes in regards to the fact that it's supposed to be from life.

I'll post some of my stuff later, mebbe. It'll probably be submitted before I do that though.

If someone could do a booze run that would be great, or somehow find a way, you have lots of time to prepare! I normally don't have a lot of 'extra' booze lying around haha.

Im gonna tape up a big piece of paper on the wall you guys can draw and paint on, jam wall style.

Could someone post a little synopsis of arts fundies for me? i'm going to be in that next fall and i'd love to know what to expect. thank you!

I know there's numerous detailed responses somewhere else in this thread if you're willing to hunt for them.
I took fundies back in september 2003.

here are your courses:... they are all weekly and 3 hours long each.

Life-drawing - You learn to draw from the figure, and almost always work from the nude figure in some shape or form during class (depending on your teacher) Homework assignments include applying techniques you learned in class to still lifes, people in everyday life (rarely), and perspective.

Painting - Painting from the figure (mostly nude or costumed) You learn from the ground up, meaning you start with achromatic paintings, to monochromatic, to full colour.
Depending on your teacher, you will work your way up from short 3 hour paintings to paints that take several weeks worth of classes to complete. Homework includes still lifes, self portrait, room painting, and something I can't remember.

Ideas and Images - A course dealing with very informal concepts of philosophy, pyschology, world issues, history, art history. You're encouraged to draw during class and homework includes a couple extremely short essays (easy) and some final illustrations.

2D Design - Learning basic composition and use of the guache paint through graphical means. You learn presentation and paint alot of geometric shapes for a while. Later on you get to design posters and promotional packages (at least I did)

3D Design - Sculpture with dictated materials every few weeks. Wire, reed, clay, sculpey. There's more freedom towards the end.

Imaging Systems - technical drawing. The type of stuff you do with rulers and T-squares with oval templates and fun stuff like that. Later in the course you learn marker rendering with applied texture.

Edit: wow, writing all that out made me really home-sick about fundies. I kinda miss it, hehe.

In 2nd year illustration... the whole group drawing in public became a huge year-long assignment. Grayscale wash was perfectly acceptable, and probably the first or second thing most people tried. I used graytone markers simply because they were the easiest to take out in public with me :)
They don't say *not* to use graytone wash.

I used animation as my back-up program as well, although I never wound up submitting a portfolio for it because I decided it just wasn't for me and I wanted illustration.

make sure your sketchbook for your illustration application is filled up with lots of hands and feet. (advice from an illustration prof back when I applied)

art fundies helps alot if you're freaking out about submitting a portfolio right after high school ;) and make sure you don't get Brenda for life-drawing. she doesn't help or comment much, so you end up making mistakes that could have been avoided would she not desert the classroom every 5 minutes.

Hmm. I sent my stuff out early last week, it was supposed to arrive on Wednesday. Yet my Access Sheridan page is still saying my portfolio status is incomplete. Should I be worried? How often does that page get updated?

Also, how hard is the Illustration program to get in to? The print quality on my images ended up being sup-par, I'm afraid that's going to come back and bite me in the ass. :/

You might think of calling the school just to double check. Status gets updated very slowly on that page, but it's best you still make sure.

When I applied to illustration back in 2003, I heard the numbers were like roughly 1000 people submit portfolio's and around 100 gets accepted. When I stood in line with my portfolio years ago, there had to be no less than a few hundred people there just in that hour.
I think since the program turned into the degree thing the numbers have petered off slightly because far less people are now eligable to apply to a bachelor program.

I think you have a good chance if that means anything at all :) I wish you the best of luck whether you need it or not :)

Edit: I think they'll probably be understanding of sub-par printing... especially since you mailed it in. Teachers in the actual program will probably be very understanding since the school's own on-site printing shop recieves tons of complaints for bad print-outs all the time..

Ryn
February 27th, 2007, 10:14 PM
Oh, that's good to hear. I included some originals along with prints too, so hopefully that will be a bit of a comparison for the horrible print quality. If Im rejected from illustration based on lack of skill, I'm 100% fine with that - I don't want to be in a program I'm not prepared for. I'm just hoping that if I am rejected it is for skill, not print quality or something frivolous like that.

I'll give the school a ring tomorrow. Thanks a bundle for the advice and reinforcement, Kenny. I appreciate it. :3

From what I remember if you want to see your scores you have to send away for them after april 1st and they'll photocopy and mail them to you.

I AM GOING TO BRING MAGICAL FAIRY POWDER AND PENIS DECORATION FLOWERS!! IS THAT OK???? Oh wait, but it won't work, unless SirGreenSock won't bring his penis (drawings) :D

Well the thing is that my friends are having a party on saturday somewhere around that time, two floors below, so i can just let everyone into the building. Everybody that show's up at 8 that is :] See endregan, i'm saving you some elevator trips :] Ain't i nice?

And also, does anyone have a place where i could crash? I'm not sure how long the thing's gonna last and my landlords not really keen on me going back home in the middle of the night, so she'd rather have me stay over at someones place. Anyone? Purdy please?

Good news for all of you hopeful animation applicants,

As of 5 O' Clock PM, today, the official animation portfolio status was 520 submitted, of which, 44 were accepted (yeah, bad year for Sheridan, good year for you).
Seeing as the BAA Animation program has roughly, what, 150(?) seats available, they haven't even met 1/3 of their quota.
Which means the chances of you calling yourself a 1st year animation student come next September are pretty damn good.

Here's to Sheridan lowering their standards! :hatsoff:

That sucks... though i hope the courses and profs themselves dont relent and lower their standards as well. Those 44 deserve the same tough courses that this year and every other year's students got, and those other 100 students ought to work their asses off to show that they'd earned their spots.

Well, usually, Sheridan gives those that score 80 or more(I believe) on their portfolio automatic entry. This year, there were 44 out of 520. Considering the number of portfolios submitted have climbed as high as approximately 4000 in past years, of which only a few hundred might get a score above 80, this year isn't too bad.

Sheridan's not really lowering their standards, per se, merely that the portfolio average this year will likely be low. Last year required you to score a minimum of 61. Depending on the quality of those other 476 portfolios, the minimum required score could be lower or, oddly enough, even higher. After all, there could be a bunch of portfolios that scored in the seventies range.

So, really, the only thing that's changed is the abnormally low number of applicants this year giving you less competition.

Either way, all of this musing becomes irrelevant once April 1st rolls around and the marks come back.

i know for a fact that there are several of those 44 that paid money and lots of it to have their portfolios done by 3rd and 4th year animators just to get into the program. Infact several kids in my year, did the same thing last year. Of those 44 id say maybe 30 - 35 got in on their own artistic merit. Which is depressing to say the least. Ahhh, if only i could speak french and could afford Gobelins tuition.

This *sort of* reminds me of a few years ago when I applied to illustration out of fundies. Closer to results time we kept hearing that out of 800 portfolios they couldn't find enough good ones to fill all seats in the program ... only 60 hit the skill-level they were looking for.

I remember being all pissed off and bitter because I figured I could never be one of those 60. Fortunately I was....

And then later on alot of people appealed their rejection letters... got accepted that way.

You know what? It doesn't seem to matter anymore. The first two years of the program especially, people grow so much skill-wise, that most people seem to be completing really good work and competent enough to complete the assignments now.

People who originally appealed seem to be pretty on par with some of the people who nailed their portfolio scores. I think the steps forward you make in programs like these totally dwarf any progress made previously in highschool/previous drawin' time.

I bet by second year it'll be hard to tell who hit that original sheridan standard on their application and who didn't. Imo.

Oh, and the jam wall is no-seem paper that I bought at the bookstore. It's a very smooth, somewhat thick cartridge paper. It's white and it's big...

I draw on it with compressed charcoal and conte in class... but it's not rough enough for vine... if that gives you an idea.

Yeah sorry about the early end to the night. Apparently there were a few other parties going on, and they were noisey-- and one across the hall from us, so the night manager had to shut us down :/ If we'd turned the music down at 11-midnight and the party across the way hadn't been going on we might've gotten away with it. Thanks for being so accomdating though, because we don't want to have troubles with the management, we have a good thing going on. The night manager seemed pretty surprised and happy things broke up so quickly though so good job :P

Still had fun though, and hope y'all did. Thanks for posing for me-- those who did willingly or unwillingly. Thanks for those crepes, they were amazing! And just in general thanks for showing up guys, great collabs and good fun.

P.S. Sorry for the wait Ape, and then having to leave so soon to your arrival. Feel really bad man-- sorry about that.

Hey everyone.

I just wanted to say thanks to everyone who came and made the event a success. I saw a few familiar faces and some new ones too, thats what I like about this community. Special thanks to ambuyler for your amazing cookies, Agnes for your tasty crepes and funky music. Overall I had a good time, wish I could do these things more often. The only downside was we got cut short, night management can be pretty strict. Ape I wanted to apologize for the long wait and early retirement, thats not good at all and you handled it really well, thanks.

For now, here are some pics from the beginning of the jam wall to a couple throughout the night before my camera died. Jerry got a good shot of the wall in its complete state, we will get it posted up later today. Its close to 5am, daylights savings parties guys. So TECHNICALLY our party ended at 1am if you want to think of it that way lol.

I have two words for y'all: Hoo and Ray! I'M IN!! I know nobody here knows me, although I've lurked my way through this entire thread from page one, but I figured if I have a reason to post, it's now.

Today I got Offers for Illustration and Animation, and after a deliberation of about four seconds, I clicked Confirm for Illustration. Now I'm getting cold feet about that, but I'm pretty sure I'm going to stick with my decision. I'll still be taking Animation Life Drawing tutors, though.

I heard scores are to be picked up in A100 this year, instead of them getting mailed out. Any truth to this rumour? (I know one of the students who got to sift through folio scores, and he told my Illus. mark, but I'm curious as to the Animation breakdown sheet.)
_____

For all those people still waiting: If you haven't been checking OCAS, check that instead of AccessSheridan. I confirmed my Offer today and AcccessSheridan STILL says "Under Consideration". Personally I don't trust Sheridan's communication technology as far as I can throw it, which is not far at all, seeing as it's an intangible interface made of programming code.

Second, I have a friend whose portfolio is (in my completely biased opinion) more deserving than some of the people I know that got Offers already, who did everything on the checklist, who still hasn't heard back yet. A couple of people, in fact. So I'm sure things are still trickling in.

I'm planning to start a sketchbook thread here as well, I just have to fix my scanner first.

You're not the only one. Some of the people in my class are still waiting. They went to the admissions office and asked about it, and were told that they will have their answers between today and thursday.

I'm really disappointed in this whole process, i think what they're doing is really cruel and incompetent and i'd like to get a word with someone responsible for this whole mess...

Yeah, Amazing ape is right... this happens every year.

It's unfortunate you guys have to wait so long... believe me, I understand. I stayed up all night one time re-logging in about 20 times every hour to see if the status had changed.

It's not a bad sign if you're still labeled as 'under consideration'. I have a friend who was under consideration until june and then finally accepted... although she had her heart set on another program and didn't really care or pursue an answer from illustration... so that could by why it took so long for the status to change.

If you hear nothing by the end of this week, obviously bug admissions about it... although be nice. Like most college campuses the registration office is probably under-staffed for times like these... and I'm sure they're working through the piles.
Sometimes sheridan does need a little kick in the bum to get things moving though... believe me, I know. haha :P Separate fundies issue entirely.

Good luck, everybody.

People still waiting, try not to fret too much. Just remember that you're only going to art school in the first place (probably) to become a better artist. So absolute worst case scenario, your formal training is put off for a year, possibly more. So what? It's easy to become ultimately focused on the stepping stones to our dreams, but going to art school a year later won't hinder you very much at all, in the long run.

So keep your head down, and draw draw draw instead of worrying. Keep your big goals in mind and try to remember that everything in between (even Sheridan) is just a means to an end.

(Sorry if this is all chock-full of assumptions, I find this attitude totally took the edge off my waiting ;).)

About portfolio scores, I was told (by some lady behind a desk, I forget where) that they would be mailed out mid-April. I also heard you had to apply somewhere to have that done, but I dunno.

I was lucky enough to know a student who had to sort all the Illustration scores into piles, so he knew I got in the whole time but wasn't allowed to tell me!! Arrgh... Anyway, since I know now, he said my Illustration folio score was 89. I don't know what the standard is though. I'm still waiting on my Animation score.

(It doesn't really matter, but I kinda wish I'd tried harder on the perspective building in the drawing test... It's easily my weakest piece... Ah well, it's a bit silly to obssess over it now. I'll see some of you next term!)

PS: I'd give it until at least around mid-April to go and bug the Admissions ladies. I swear some of them looked like they wanted to eat me when I walked in the room, and I didn't even say anything! Anyway, mid-April is the oft-cited goal for most of the offers to go out, but like people have said, it looks like offers can be sent out as late as June. Also OCAS updates a little sooner than AccessSheridan, apparently.

What i think one of those is, i think the adv one? Is a new three year program they created, of which the first year is kinda like art fundies and the next two years are like one year of art fundies animation and art fundies illustration but mixed a bit? I think that's what it is. Not sure.

Visual and Creative Arts is replacing the Fundy Anim and Illus streams. It's a two year diploma that you can upgrade to a three year advanced diploma. I have a sheet with all the info on it, but the most important aspect I could find was that half of all your classes are electives. I was told you can take classes from Animation and Illustration as well, so it's kind of like a customizable super-version of Fundies.

Core fundies will still be around, I believe.

I think the deadline for accepting an offer for the Degree programs is May 1, so if that's true, wouldn't people on the waiting list have to wait until then to get results? When all the declined offers get processed, I'm guessing administration would then bump the next few waitlisted students into the empty slots.

Then again, it's Sheridan. Who knows how they go about this sort of thing...

I don't remember the stats on the number of waitlisted people or what the chances of getting in are.

hey mokad - a lot of graduates of the computer animation program are individuals who go through illustration, or the animation 4 year program, and then take the computer animation to get a focussed portfolio.

I am not sure of any demo reels or portfolios on the web but I know a couple of people who have been through computer animation.

Depending on what you are looking for, if you have no experience in post secondary art education, i suggest taking some classes before you take a year of computer animation, because it is one of those programs where you need that skill set before you enter.

I've done some research on this prior, but I thought I'd ask here anyway. I'll be attending Sheridan again this September for Illustration but I'm getting a little weary with my decision of the program over Animation.

I chose Illustration because I felt that, even though I do enjoy some animated films, I'm drawn more toward illustrations (graphic novels, detailed digital/traditional paintings, etc.) The Korean illustrator Hyung-Tae Kim inspires me a lot, and is one of my inspirations. I remember purchasing the game Magna Carta:Tears of Blood for his character illustrations alone. The game itself was subpar (story and battle system-wise) in my opinion, but it's the artbook that still captivates me even now. Anyway reasons like this are why I chose Illustration over Animation.

A problem I have though is that I am looking to get into the gaming industry as one option, and I'm wondering if I still can with Illustration? The main types of things I'd love to be involved with in the gaming industry would be texturing, environments, maybe some modelling and possibly concept design.

I have some other job options in mind as well after graduation (and perhaps taking the Computer Animation graduate program afterward), but I was just wondering what other job opportunities are out there besides illustrating childrens books and editiorial illustrating, that are better suited to my interests.

SirGreenSock
April 24th, 2007, 11:23 AM
Hey liquid, hope i can help somewhat, seeing as i had the same question throughout my first year at illustration here.
I think first of all that both ilustration and animation are what you make of them. In illustration at least, no one is really gonna guide your hand through the whole process of getting where you wanna be (concept art), soyou gotta motivate yourself andget what you need out of the program.
At the beginning of the year i had the exact same dillema as you, I looked at interpretive illustration and saw little past constant pressure toward books and editorial illustration, with only the occasional exception where someone went in a different direction such as conceptart. Im also interested in learning texturing, enviroments, modelling and especially concept design, and i saw that interpretive illustration, as well as animation weren't quite what i was looking for (animation DOES have an awesome layout class, but ive found that the vast majority of the workload is not the kind of work im interested in).
Anyway, unto my point, i think you should be able to find what youre looking for in the technical/scientific strand of illustration that is the second option in the second year of illustration. Its where im going next year, so im not 100% sure of it all, but ive talked to a lot of professors teaching the program, and they were all willing to modify their projects to suit concept design. On the scientific side, alongside the biology stuff that im less interested in, we also go very deeply into anatomy of humans and animals, with the teacher telling me that we'deventually be allowed to design our own creature's anatomies and such rather than just use existing animals. On the technical side of things the prof also told me that he's taking the course on a more conceptdesign sort of level. The technical side includes things ranging from media studies (pure technique and search for realism in rendering) to classes including industrial design, architectural design and includes learning a lot of 2D and 3D software to get there. So as far as i have gathered, this strand seems to be a lot more open to the concept design side of things, and really includes most aspects of design except character design, but personally i figure thats an area im more confident in learning on my own time and personal projects.
Hope this helped somewhat, i dunno if i just rambled on for no reason again. :)

I totally agree with greensock on that one.

Recently I started up a forum specifically for illustrators and friends of sheridan for content that we can relate to.

http://www.creativerepublic.ca/

I suggest you join and start posting up images, and critique eachother. Whether you are in illustration now, applying, or maybe you just go to sheridan and have another perspective to offer, its all fair game.

And why not build something good over the summer that will be an awesome resource for many years to come. This is where you guys come in, to make it work you guys should be active participants!

I normally dont like advertising this stuff but its a good spot to reach all you guys on the web and why not right here in the good ol' sheridan thread.

Thanks for the info SirGreenSock. I'm still not so sure about the Technical/Scientific side of Illustration either, though. I guess this is why I'm going through such an uneasy state right now. When I was in Art Fundamentals I didn't really enjoy the technical drawing stuff as much as some of my other classes, and I fear I'll be very overwhelmed and bored in technical/scientific. I can deal with doing a bit of technical drawing, but I don't want to bite off more than I can chew. Perhaps I'll change my mind though, I don't know. I have a year to think about it anyway, I suppose.

Woah, Liquid, I had the exact same problem as you a couple months ago!! I was losing sleep over it and freaking out to my parents (I'd hit Confirm for Illustration at that point and was really set on taking Technical), but I eventually chose Animation for a couple of reasons, which I won't get into now. However:

I think the important thing is to separate the PROGRAMS of Illustration and Animation from the CAREERS. People seem to think that taking one program over another will lock them into their destiny forever, but in reality, it's just a means to an end. There are a few things you could consider when making tyour decision, though, if you haven't done so already (I don't know how much research you did yourself so I'ma gonna throw what I know out there):

-Look at student work from both programs. If one program seems to be putting out more of the kind of things you'd like to see yourself doing, this might be an important factor. Have you seen anything that caught your fancy?

-I have friends going into Illustration, and we've decided to pool our notes in an attempt to "cross-pollinate" our educations from both programs. If you have connections like this, you might want to consider them.

-Video game concept art is not about making good-looking pictures (reiterated by the Art Director of Silicon Knights, a video game developer). It is about designing objects that can be moved around in three dimensions, that are FUNCTIONAL as well as aesthetically consistent. Meaning you have to be able to break down an object in order to see how it works, or how it would work if it actually existed. So you can't just draw a neat-looking ray gun, you have to draw it from all angles, show the inner mechanics, and how it physically works in that world. Technical Illustration would definitely help with that.

-It's quite possible to become an illustrator after taking Animation (my goal!). Jeff Smith, creator of the massive graphic novel Bone, was an Animator. I know a few people in Animation who have jobs doing comic book covers. Doug TenNapel (Earthworm Jim) is an amazing comic book artist. In fact, a lot of the Sheridan animators' work I've seen is very Illustrative, in terms of digital and traditional technical artistry. Another reason to check out student work.

-Illustrators (in the career sense, not students in the program) do everything from greeting cards, safety pamphlets, creature design, concept art (Pixar's concept art in particular is extremely "illustrative"), comic books, television advertising, textbooks, movie posters, video game art, NASA blueprints, and beyond. Sheridan's animation program, when it isn't teaching you how to animate, is actually illustration. All illustration is, is an image with a point. Animation is connected with illustration in a lot of strange and disturbing ways, so GreenSock is right when he says that a lot of what you want to do will come from yourself and not the program.

-Comic books/graphic novels and digital painting are largely self-taught ventures, from what I can tell of the people who excel at them, and I'm not sure either program will give you more or less of an advantage in those particular fields. In terms of texturing and environments... I know you have to create environments in Animation, but in terms of computerized rendering, I don't know to what extent that is taught. Maybe Action Ape has the answer to that one...

-Do you actually like animating? There are students in the program who hate animating with a firey passion. It's not a hyuuuge part of the program, but it is one of the classes. If you really like to just sit down and spend a lot of time on one awesome looking drawing, that's what they do in Illustration, if you don't mind sloshing about with a lot of different kinds of media. I think they do more drawing in Animation than painting, with the exception of backgrounds. Can I get some confirmation on that?

___

I realize that was a lot of information, maybe 15% of which was actually helpful, but I'm still trying to figure things out for myself as well and rambling to other people is a good way of making it appear as though I'm not talking to myself... Anyone who wants to disagree with what I've said is welcome to, as I'm just fresh out of Fundies and this is all based on hearsay and observation. More information about what I'll be getting into come September is greatly welcome to!

Hey everybody.

I've been lurking around here for a while, so I thought I'd finally say hello.

I'm taking Art Fundamentals in September, thinking about trying to get into Illustration if all goes well. I figured I'd try out with Fundies for a year and get my footing.

Just wanted to say that this thread has been really helpful for me.

liquidtransience
April 27th, 2007, 03:10 AM
Thanks for the info Misericord! It really was helpful, and put me at a bit of ease anyway.

I was under a lot of stress trying to figure out what program I wanted to take and it came down to meeting up with a relative of mine who completed Sheridan's Classical Animation diploma program back when it was around. He told me it was extremely character driven' with not enough emphasis on other aspects of animating (I don't know how much this has changed since it merged with Computer Animation though). He stressed that he wished he had taken Illustration instead. This geared me away from Animation because our interests seem to be similar in terms of the commissioned Illustration work he showed me.

I love making that one standalone picture, and am less interested in animating. I feel though, that 2D animation would be a good skill to have, at least to get into the video gaming industry. I've seen some work that's come out of the illustration wing and I was floored by the traditional painting skills. I really want to improve in that area, and take that traditional painting knowledge and apply it on my own time to digital painting works. I intend to create graphic novels after as well, most of which I realize will be study on my own part. I plan to study Maya and 3DMax on my own as well, as I'm thinking of the Computer Animation graduate program afterward (is there any classical 2D Animation work in this program? I searched in the course descriptions but couldn't find much info on the subject)

I'm still thinking of going the Interpretive route for Illustration (I saw pictures taken by kennygeeze here I believe, from a student show I'm not sure from which year, and the Interpretive work seemed very interesting to me, something I'd love to do and take part in, mostly in the character/painting area) but I'm wondering if it's possible to perhaps pick up some Technical stream assignment sheets or things like that, so I can improve in that area on my own time as well? I also wonder if it's at all possible to take some kind of 2D Animation course while studying Illustration, even if it's on the side and no credit will be given, I don't even care I just want a broad range of skills to get to where I want to go.

I'm wondering if it's possible to perhaps pick up some Technical stream assignment sheets or things like that, so I can improve in that area on my own time as well? I also wonder if it's at all possible to take some kind of 2D Animation course while studying Illustration, even if it's on the side and no credit will be given, I don't even care I just want a broad range of skills to get to where I want to go.

Im sure if you get a buddy in technical you can easily exchange notes and knowledge and stuff, i fully intend on keeping up with what the interpretive strand is up to. If nothing else the technical profs i talked to so far are damn nice, and i see no reason why they wouldnt offer some degree of help to ya.
I also talked to the head dude guy about taking additional courses like an animation course on the side, and he said that although its possible, it would be extremely costly (though he didnt say the exact price, im gonna have to harass him some more) because your tuition covers all the courses together, and you'd need to pay the cost for that one course. If the price is anything like the nightclass courses you can take, the price is likely between 600-1200 bucks per year or semester?.

Bytheway, i was also real sceptical about going technical until a month ago, i was certain that i'd be going interptretive. Even now im certain that technical will be suicide in the first semester at least, but thats part of why im going for it.

Good advice being exchanged here, I couldn't have said it better myself.

If you like painting, and want to do illustrative painting or portraiture, interpretive is definitely the better route.

Technical is however going to start incorporating more conceptual design work, which is a new development and I think will be exciting to see where it goes.

If you haven't been to the Sheridan Grad show yet, go now. Its open until Saturday. http://www.sheridanheadlines.ca

does anyone know how many people get in off the waitlist? do I have any chance? (I'm #9 so... things aren't looking too great.)

Hello Sheridan students! We want to extend an invitation to all of you to visit Max the Mutt's year end Open House. Work of graduating students is featured, and films are on view.

We are all part of building Canada's sequential arts industries. We should encourage, support , and inspire each other to higher levels of humanity and artistry. There is no place for arrogance in great art.

Ok boys (and girls of course but boys is a term of endearment for everyone!)
I gotta question for you.

So I applied to the residence thing right, and was put on the waitlist. So apparently I'm 22nd and theres still a good probability that I'll get in.
When will peeps on the waitlist usually be informed they got in?
Anyone got experience with this sort of thing?

My father is bothering me about it on an almost daily basis and I'd like to shut him up for a little while.

I have a question to all you animation students.

There was an animation students movie screening sometime last fall/winter of a movie i've been searching for for a loooong time. But i can't remember the title, the only thing i remember is the picture of a poster that was shown on the information paper that was hanging around school.

It was a man, walking into a garden, surrounding a blue house. He was holding a suitcase. I think he was dressed in a brown suit and was wearing a hat. He was with his back to the viewer.

I don't know what the movies about because i never saw it but i know someone said it's an older and better plotline, similar to the one of the 6th sense. Does anyone know what movie i'm talking about or know who i can contact about those screenings?

I just had a question about the internship in year three. I believe this applies to both of the degree programs, but I was just wondering if one needs 420 hours of work experience prior to even starting the internship? I'm just a bit confused from the sheet that came with the acceptance form.

I was wondering if anyone here lives in 1300 Malborough, and could tell me about it? (E.g pros and cons, is it a party zone, or does work get done, etc.)

Currently it seems like the best option for me to use as housing this year.. other than Places4Students.com, it is not so easy to find a place to rent in Oakville!

Yeah, FalconInverse, I'm currently leaning towards staying there too. I've emailed a few people about rooms and whatnot, and it seems like a decent place. Close to campus, which is awesome.

Would love to get some input from others, though.

My friend Steph C lived there last year, she told me it was decent, I am looking for a place like that too

Atazure
June 14th, 2007, 02:24 PM
Yeah, i know Steph too, and she's coming back there again this year. She seems to like it, it's a two floor apartment, that's pretty spacious and comfortable but with very thin walls. So if there IS a party, a lot of neighbouring apartments get to hear it they want it or not.

The rest...I guess it all depends on your roomates. It IS really close to school, and close to bus stops so if you want to go somewhere the bus stop's five minutes away, and so is Rabba's, and i THINK Starbucks too (isn't that what they're building in place of that old coffe place?).

Hmm... this whole finding a place thing would be easier if I had more time, and oakville wasn't so far away... of course, if oakville wasn't so far away, I could live at home...

Maybe the lot of us should conspire and make our own student house.. the ConceptArt Student house@ Sheridan.. (woot)
