hey dudes! i leave for three days and let you let this thing disappear!!! hehe.. just bugging... but does anyone need two couches and a really nice kitchen table (+4 chairs)? it's unfortunate that where i'll be living this year won't need/can't accomodate these pieces that my parents have decided to get rid of.. i'm not asking alot of money, just what you think is reasonable, and the catch (there's always a catch) must be willing to pick them up... 1/2 hour south of oakville... so it's not like i live anywhere crazy... but yeah, i thought i'd give you guys the chance...
ciaooooo!
ps. i'll update the sketchbook soon.. i promise!

...I leave for three days and let you let this thing disappear!!....
Yeah we have a knack for that. :D As for a weekly or monthly sketchtogether, saturday works for me. I guess we will start it once school hits? Also what happens if you are late on your osap tuition deferall? I wouldnt be able to pay mine until about mid july, and my OSAP status is on hold while they get info from sheridan. (its been like that for 2 weeks almost). I dont want to throw down 300, and then have OSAP declined my application. Any suggestions anyone?

Ive got a master bedroom(with minibathroom included) available in my apartment too. Its 450 a month and is available july 1st. The apartment is currently in rough shape, but is getting completely overhauled and redone in july, back to that brand spankin new shine, by the apartment people.
I need someone ASAP for july 1st, so if anyone is interested feel free to call 905 - 901 - 0186 and ask for Jenn or Braden, or leave a message on the machine.
PS: how was the workshop guys?

Damn Montreal was awesome, actually encountered quite a few Sheridan people (mostly lurkers though). Summer's gonna be busy for me, Im working to pay off my Montreal debt and am gonna keep real busy with drawing and painting. We should organize a meetup (i guess in Oakville?) to hang out and sketch or something.
Got some great crits from just about all the instructors and studios as well, gonna completely rework my portfolio for the third time now.

Hey Gsock, Im down for a meetup and sketch deal in oakville! Im in saskatchewan until july 5thish though for family orientated stuff. Now that you have all this massive knowledge of all things black and rooster related, you can critique ourstuffs! woot! :D ;)
EDIT: well, in a turn of shit news, found out my roommate didnt sign a new lease on the apartment, so I have to be out july 1st. If anyone needs a second roommate for a place or something, please pm me or email me. Or just reply here.

July 7th, 2006, 07:41 PM
yes, toronto does have a zoo, but its expensive to go and sketch at a zoo everyweeked! atleast for budget minded students like me. :( on an unrelated note, A scanner darkly came out to theatres today, but i looked on the internet, and not one theatre in the GTA is playing it?!? are my eyes decieving me or is it just not released in canada? The ROM (Royal Ontario Museum) is free on Fridays after 4:30. It is sometimes crowded but has a large variety of things to draw. The building itself and the surrounding area is also great for sketching. All it costs is 11 bucks (16 for you lazy people who can't walk a few blocks).
SirGreenSock
July 7th, 2006, 11:05 PM
Ive actually been trying to organize a weekly friday meetup to go and draw at the ROM with people for a short while, but few people around me are interested. Anyone here up for organizing a ROM meetup sometime soon?
Zoo sounds good too, but its too expensive for something regular. There is also the Agriculture Fair (Winter Festival) every October at the Exhibition Place in Toronto. I went there this year with my life drawing class, and I think it is mandatory for animation students to go there to draw the animals.
amarryth
July 10th, 2006, 05:44 AM
well, we could find a bunch of local places that people are willing to once in a while drop the cash for.. throw them in a hat, and go to a different one once every two or three weeks? a weekly or biweekly just plain get together is great too, lots of portrait practice since drawing a likeness of people we know is much more difficult than some random stranger; plus it's über awesome to see drawings of oneself through the eyes of other growing artists~
there's my two cents..
in other news, i'm actually going to be updating the sketchbook by next week since i have the whole week off! i'll also be moving my shit out to oakville in a month or so which is soooooo exciting! it's coming guys, slowly but surely!!!!

Animations students (new and returning) might be interested in learning about the new animation building they're preparing for the fall.
http://cookedart.blogspot.com/]Alan Cook (http://cookedart.blogspot.com/) (starting third year), posted some info regarding the building. Sounds pretty interesting. Be sure to check out some of Alan's work too. I'd like to see how this new building compares to the old C-Wing.

Yeah i went through the school to italy, and for the illustration wing, they are making so its no longer so open and loud, they have put up walls that now reach the ceiling, that about all you can see from walking the hall, since you cant go in there right now.

Cool, didnt know they were renovating the illustration wing as well, cant wait to see what they do with it.

Unfortunately, I don't really have any of the answers you seek. I just found out last week that we were starting late and entering a semester without a reading week, which sucks. I can see the stress building up already. It could have something to do with the renovations, but the way it looks now they won't be able to complete the animation building in time, they've just barely got the basic structure up. I've been hearing that a more realistic time for its completion is October. Just from all the things I've been hearing, it looks like a minor disaster is shaping up, there may very well be a slight bit chaos during the first few weeks of the first semester.

You know maybe its because of the strike, teachers havent had enough time to work out everything the need? i doubt its because of the reno, why would they start a whole school late cause the art kids needed some work done? lol
For me school starts when it starts, i never seem to worry about, omg why is it a late start!!?, its like meh. But yeah the 11th is about a week late from last years start, i think we started on the 5th last year. oh,well.
And sanby there is nothing you have to pick, its already picked for you, if you check acess sheridan a few weeks before school you will get your class list and stuff. Fundies is 2d, 3d, drawing, painting, imageing systems, ideas and images. i think thats it, or all i can remeber anyways.

I have a treat for you guys that's over two years in the making. Well... not exactly. I had these photos on my hard-drive and completely forgot about them. Somehow they got transferred to this computer without my knowledge.
Anyways, they're pictures from the 2004 sheridan open house... located here...
http://www.kenmccuen.com/graphics/other%20images/openhouse/
I don't know how long I can leave them up. My webspace has never recieved *that* much traffic.
DISCLAIMER: (or something) besides for some of my work being in a couple of the fundies ones I have very little clue who any of the artists are... most of the pictures are utterly terible photography -- but let me explain...
There were alot of people snapping photos of various work -- then a bunch of grads came in and yelled at everybody who were doing it... I somehow avoided them by not being overly obvious with a big camera flash like others were. I guess they were more concerned about the people with super megapixel cameras getting so close to the paintings they may as well have used a flat bed scanner on them.. Nobody could steal artwork from my photographs... lol (as you can see)
I also only took pics of the fundies and illustration displays. No animation or anything (sorry guys) Didn't have a very big memory card back then and it kinda came down to the program I was in at the time, and the program I was entering into.

Thanks for uploading those Kenny, some real great work there!
Quick question for current students: Whats the deal with oil paints at Sheridan? Is the entire medium of paint not allowed in the school, or is it just turpentine and other not-too-healthy mediums? You dont really need anything other than oil paint (maybe linseed oil or another medium) and a rag in the painting process, and there shouldnt be any harm there. I was hoping to be able to do more oilpainting once Im at Sheridan.
Hexal
July 19th, 2006, 12:35 PM
They dont let you use oil paints because of the ventlation or something, its not set up to suck out all the fumes, they dont want like 40 students worth or fumes just hanging around, maybe with the reno they willl change things i dont know, i think you get to use water based oils if you want like second yearish *shrugs*
Leeway
July 19th, 2006, 12:43 PM
Hexal: Yeah, you're probably right. I figure they've taken away the reading week because we're starting a week later. Which is silly because a reading week can really come in handy half way through a semester (but more so in the second semester than the first).

No problem.
and basically what Hexal said about the oil paints. There's no huge fans or open windows to pull out the fumes from the solvents. If you have some creative way to use real oils without poisonous solvents then you should ask the teacher. No one is allowed to use oils first year -- at least as far as I know. Most of the assignments are only one class long so that's really not much time to work with oils anyways.
2nd year you can use water soluable oils (which I use) and walnut oils where a clear walnut oil is your medium and your solvent.
Ken

Yeah, I was talking to dsillustration in Montreal and he showed me how I could use oils without any solvents. All i'd need would be oils, an old rag (to wipe excess paint off the brushes with) and some non-fuming oil as a medium (such as walnut oil), clean the brushes with the rag, and wash them more thoroughly with turpentine or similar at home or something.
What do you paint with mostly in first year? Acrylic, gouache etc? I think I'd prefer to stick to gouache or watercolour over acrylic.
Thanks again!
Hexal

very little gouche first year illo, its all watercolour and acrylic, split half and half each term, so first 7 weeks is water, then next is acrylic etc.

anyone? :\
I used to have the sheet, but unfortunately it's lost... but until it's found or someone posts it word for word I'll give you the gyst of the drawing test.
Don't draw from photographs.
1. Draw a group of figures in public so it's obvious what they are doing.
Kens notes : this is similiar to an assignment we do in second year. Use immediate media such as ink and include the architecture. Make sure you comunicate something happening in a realistic space rather than just a collection of well drawn figures. I really suggest you use ink and markers for this.
2. Draw a historical building, demonstrating your knowledge of perspective. Do not use rulers and draw from life.
Kens notes: Draw a church or something that has interesting archicture. Do not draw anything dilapadated or caving in... it'll make them think you can't do something that's structurally sound. Do studdies and try to build thumbnails of it out of rectangular prisms... not just what you see. Try to understand how it's built.
3. Draw a figure in an interior environment using opaque black ink. Don't use a ballpoint pen... composition can be controlled or expressionistic
Kens notes :Make sure the composition is interesting. Probably the most challenging one as far as finding something to draw. I suggest bringing a friend somewhere other than your house to draw them... interiors of houses rarely have that much depth or interesting architecture. Even a coffee shop would be better than most houses.
4. Draw a still life containing objects that resemble a sphere, a cube, and a cylinder. Draw a second still like where these same objects have undergone some sort of creative transformation.
Kens notes : back when I had to do this an illustration prof actually told me they didn't care about shading. It should be dominantly contour... maybe with a little bit of hatching 'n stuff for modeling.
There were optional assignments vs handing in your own portfolio. I don't remember all of them but some of them were draw hands and feet, draw a container and its contents such as a suitcase and various objects inside of it, second still life.
Also.... they really want to see a sketchbook of your daily practice. Fill it with drawings of hands, feet, faces, and tons of shit from life... all 100 pages back to front. Usually its that that means the difference between someone getting in vs not getting in.

I hate acrylics until I got to Sheridan; they actually end up being quite versatile, you end up using them as both a watercolour AND gouache type
medium.
is everyone all set for housing now? i JUST dropped off my lease with my landlord yesterday so everything's final! while i was right near the school i went and wandered around the school at 9pm, still just a skeleton attached to the back of a-wing; the gate that had a "CONSTRUCTION ZONE - DO NOT ENTER" sign was open, but i didn't want to get yelled at or hurt.. it doesn't appear as though there is much renovation going on in the illustration area, but how much can one tell by looking through two different door windows?

i wouldn't count on getting timetables until the last week of august at the earliest, especially since we start later this year.. i don't even remember if we get any sort of info packages in the mail.. probably will get something for the welcome day (unless it's a whole week now).. as you probably noticed with acceptances, the school is slow with everything it does... but if you've paid, you're good.. i'm sure you'll hear on here when someone gets their schedule.. other than that... check your sheridan email or have it forwarded to your own email, most important stuff will be sent to you through that...

so you all are 1st years? ..there a few party every year going on but people usualy end up hanging out with the same "program crews"..at leats most of the time.
or are we talking about drawing nights, that would be fun. Where's jack anyway? where's all the old timers to??? :[ i feel left out with all the first years! :P
i'll be back in oakville early september, like the 1st. i live real close to the school as well, we gotta have our annual CA meeting at school.

I'm an older timer! :P
Jack's working out of town and I don't think he has regular access to a computer... I've only seen him on MSN twice all summer so far.
I need to to know what all these 1st year's look like so I can initiate them... sharpie marker mustaches and toilet dunks a plenty!

Well Im hoping that'll be easier to avoid this year once they finish the new animation wing making it closer to the illustration one. Maybe if we're all less segregated we'll stick together more.

i'm kinda one that can't completely be classified, it's sort of going to be my third year at sheridan, first year in the ba though.. and i didn't start at sheridan straight out of high school either, i'm probably closer to the 'old timers' than anyone else lol... maybe i'll bridge the gap. i know quite a few people going into 2nd and 3rd year in both ani and illy so i don't really stick to the "program crew" thing.. yet. oh, and i heard about ani vs. illy dodgeball last year, anyone on here participate in that fest?

haha, i was the animation team captain!!!...it was my 2nd time going in that tournament...that time we were undefeated and had won againt every team.... then we had to re face illustration for a 3RD time!!!!...and our team just kinda let loose and illustration won by some miracle. :P ..plus the team who won the tournament we had destroyed them in the early games. Anyway, we'll be back next year again!

i really don't feel like repeating myself... and neither do many of the other people on here... read through the thread, there are chunks of random chatter, but there's also alot of good information.. unless you have specific questions it's kind of a waste to write what may have already been written... the course load is pretty solid, it's heaviest at the beginning of the year, basically separates those who really want to be there from everyone else, you notice a significant drop in attendance by christmas... stay on top of hw each week and you'll be fine, but it's hard to catch up if you fall behind, you only have each class once a week, and this year there's no reading week first semester so it's straight on through until christmas.. most of the students are straight from high school... basically it's all the students that were the top few of their art class in each high school. the 'shining stars' really get put in their place.. you're back to mediocre, that either frustrates people and they give up, or it inspires them, gives them a little kick in the ass and that's when you start to see progress in your ability. some things may seem wierd or pointless... and the odd time they are.. but most of the time there's a very good reason to why they're getting you to do certain assignments... oh, crap, i just gave a vague description when i said i wouldn't... anyway, are you going to be living close to the school.. it might be of benefit to you to join us when we sketch meet... and like everyone will suggest... if you don't do anything else- GO TO LIFE DRAWING!
good luck this year...

Same here, I did the regular fundies, and then came back after a year off to do the Animation Fundies. To be honest, that year off did me no good, so I'm glad I was able to slip into the newly made animation fundies program to whip me into shape before I enter the steep slope of the animation program this fall.
I'll be commuting to school, just as I thought. It's not so bad in the spring and fall, but in the long winters it takes me close to and hour and a 1/2 up to two hours sometimes to get home. Rush hour traffic is killer on the 410.

I'll be coming in from Brampton, on the good days (usually shortly after noon) I can get to and from home in about 35-45 minutes. I'll be using the bus mostly so wait times will make it harsh. I'm still alive. Work kind of got the better of me. School starts late this year?! Maybe I can work labour day weekend afterall...or is labour day weekend the 2nd, 3rd and 4th?
No reading week is gonna be rough...good thing I don't have object drawing or I doubt my sanity would be intact without a break in the middle there. We get a long weekend off for thanksgiving I think, so that might be enough...
Good to see everyone talking about plans for next year. We really should set something up. I rarely saw mr. alex and his "posse" last year, this year I shall ensure I stalk them though. :lens: That's the glare I get on my telescopic camera!
If we come back to O-town soon enough my brother and I will probably drop by the orientation meeting. (When are you moving back Ken, this new sept 11th starting date has kinda rearranged our plans to move back in I think. Also have you been back this summer at all? Is the place in one piece? lol) Class schedules or ones that are actually believable won't be up until probably the 8th of Sept I'd say. And they *might* change a bit on the Saturday. If you have a 8am class on the monday though its best to get up a little earlier and double check your schedule before heading out. Generally, the first day-- especially for first years in programs are fairly relaxed as the school can be quite confusing for new people and directions. I'm not sure if there are any new people in here worried about getting lost, but if they are you should be fine. I'm not too sure about animation though, but I never had any instructors yell at someone for showing up a bit late. Gee, I hope I remember all the wings and room numbers for next year my memory is kinda foggy.
Anyone know if Grenville is still Grenville? Cause they changed their name I think, but its always Grenville to me :P
I guess I'll keep posting for the next couple weeks, and see what new info turns up. Looking forward to next year-- I'm gonna go get back on the wagon and do some oil painting...after I get off work :/

I also messed up my some forms for school so I gotta get on the horn and see if the school can help me "expediently".

I found out about both jobs at the Sheridan job fair last spring actually. Helped open up a few doors, talked with someone from the camp in person and that led to an interview.
They also recommended treeplanting while you wait for camp to start. Treeplanting is not an easy job you should definitely look into it to see what you could get yourself into, but its one of the most interesting jobs you'll probably ever have physically and mentally.
I planted with www.amreforestation.com and the camp I went to was www.campkodiak.com . You do a phone interview for treeplanting and an interview with the camp director if your ever interested, who knows theres other companies but I had a good time with these if you just want to check it out.

I'm not sure if this is a good place to inquire.. and I know my questions will probably strike the audience as repetative, but i searched under mature/older students, and didn't come up with the answer i was looking for.
And now, a brief artistic history of me:
I 've looked all over here, and I see many people who have always done art since the dawn of time.
I, on the other hand, bowed out of art class when I was still in grade 7, at which time my art teacher for the year, the delightful Mr. Curran, assured me that I had his full support persuing a career in math.. or science.. or english.. or underwater basketweaving, so long as I never picked up a colored pencil again.
At the time, this seemed fine to me. I was not a constant drawer as a child, and when I did draw, my colours didn't look particularly pretty, or stay inside the lines or anything of the sort. Nobody ever mistook me for the next Michelangelo.
I took English and Math and Science in highschool. No art. Graduated just on the +ve side of 80, and went to University of Toronto to do an Honors BA in English.
The English language has always been my friend, but I never really wanted to teach it, and halfway through second year, I began to wonder what I was doing there. Nevertheless, I am the type of person who doesn't like to start something without finishing it, particularly when my bank account has been raped as a result.. so I completed this English degree. What else can you do with an English degree except teach? Write?
Somewhere in my process of writing, however, I became very attached to the idea of what everything out to look like, and no matter what words I used, there was always a brighter more detailed and more spectacular version that i could see in my mind.
I tried to distract myself from such fancies by getting a certificate that says I can teach English as a second language. Having completed that program, I did so (teach), briefly, but it was so verily not my cup of tea.
I did manage to fit in one little art course, at the TSA, but the classes were so short, and the term so brief, that very little could actually get done..
At that time, (some two years ago) I applied to Sheridan for the Animation program. They sent me a nice little list of things they wanted for their portfolio. I read it, re-read it, re-re-read it, and admitted to myself that I had no clue what I was doing, and couldn't hope to meet their requirements in time. (Here lieth the application fee, may it rest in peace.. so much for finishing what I start.)
...and I ended up where I am today, turning a screw on a wheel in a factory.
Granted, the wheel is a computer, and the screw is numerous reports and letters, and the factory is called 'Scotiabank'.. but as a result, the creative spirit itself within me has rebelled.
One day, it stood up, slapped me soundly across the face, and demanded that I stop leading such an empty soulless existance.. and then slapped me again for good measure, and told me to get a haircut.
Which brought me at some lengths to an issue of ImagineFx, which in turn lead me to ConceptArt.org.. and back to the Sheridan thread.
Now that you know way more about me than you ever wished to, perhaps I will finally ease your pain, and get to my bloody questions. Who knows, maybe.. if i'm lucky.. someone will offer an answer or two.
The Qvvestions
The majority of those in this thread are first years out of highschool (17/18 years old?) I, on the other hand would be applying next year, at which time I would be 27.
Is it unusual/absurd for a 27 year old to apply to these programs? (Particularly one with very limited artistic experience?)
If I were to apply, should it be to fundies, or should i go right for Illus/Anim, having used this year on my own to assemble a portfolio with the love and support (or passive loathing) of the CA community?
Being as I already have a University Degree, would it be possible to bypass extraneous requirements, like English courses and other Elective credits?
..And if it might be possible to gather some opinions:
Can a person become passionate about creating art at my age, when they wouldn't have given it a second thought, 10 years ago?
SirGreenSock
August 25th, 2006, 10:49 PM
Hey there Falcon,
Im not too experienced but i hope i can help to a degree...
Its unfortunate that you were turned away from art at an early age, but i dont think its ever too late to get back into it, especially if you have the drive and mind for it. Take a look at this (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=870)thread, then jump 10 pages ahead, then jump another 10 pages ahead. Look at what this artist did with the right motivation and hard work, there is no reason you or anyone else couldnt do the same. Personally, I hardly even picked up a pencil until around grade 8, but even then it was the kind of work i consider misguided (copying comic book and anime characters). I didnt get my act together until i discovered Conceptart.org late in grade 10 at which point i threw all my work away and started drawing from scratch, went back to the basics and moved from there. In September I'm going to Sheridan for the illustration program, and I couldnt have done it without this community.
Get your work together right now, start posting here, start a thread in the sketchbook section, look around, get the learning and support going as soon as possible. With hard work, you will at the very least manage to get into the art fundamentals, or one of the two specialized fundamentals programs, and get your work in order to get into illustration or animation.
What kind of work are you interested in? If youre interested in a highly intensive technical program to get yourself jump started maybe you should consider first enrolling in The Toronto Academy of Fine Art (http://www.academyofrealistart.com/curriculum.asp). Its a classical atelier, similar to the one MindCandyMan attended in the other link i provided.
Hope i helped even a little bit. Good luck and welcome to CA!

August 26th, 2006, 12:17 AM
Thankyou very kindly for your words, SirGreen.
I had a look at mindcandy's development, and it is truly amazing.. one or two years of hard work really paid off!
This is the first i've heard of the Toronto Academy of Fine Art. Definetely worth looking in to!
Can you clarify - did you apply directly to the Illustration program, or did you do a year in Fundamentals?
I'm still not a hundred percent sure which avenue is for me.
I know one of the things that triggered my interest was when I first saw Final Fantasy X.
The game has such stunning visuals, and cinematics. I really wish I could work on a project like that some day... be it designing the surreal environments, or the characters.. or bringing them to life through animation.
Originally I was just thinking I ought to go straight for animation.. i thought somehow that computer animation was a more technical thing.. but it seems to me now that there's no point in learning animation if you havn't figured out how to draw the things you want to animate.
My unfortuante trouble is that I am afraid of failing. When you're 13 or 14, and your art teacher convinces you not to bother taking any more art in school, it doesn't exactly help you grow up with a great deal of artistic confidence. Like anything else, with drawing you need confidence to move forward. Damn, I should be drawing right now.. why am I typing?!
Maybe I'll hire someone to stand in my room with a whip, and whip me every time they see me not drawing something. Where'd that employment section go.. hmm..
dguy
August 26th, 2006, 12:25 AM
I personally would apply directly to the Illustration program. If they don't think you are ready they will automatically place you in Fundies. That is what happened to me.
But I would definitely recommend you to take art classes elsewhere first. Sheriden is picky picky. And if you had little experience drawing, your chances of getting in is pretty slim.
Also, you have to change your attitude. To be an artist you have to be confident in your talent. If you are afraid to fail, then you have failed already.
SirGreenSock
August 26th, 2006, 01:32 AM
I didnt go to art fundamentals, but by applying to illustration and animation sheridan also automatically applied me to fundamentals like dguy says.
The first thing you gotta get over is your fear of failing. Drawing should be fun, the process of learning should be fun, if youre only worried about making a great finished product, you will not succeed and will only discourage yourself. Start drawing, draw from life, draw from imagination, pick up books on drawing, painting and artists that inspire you and really immerse yourself in what you enjoy to do. You may need to force yourself a bit at first, but once you get over the hurdle of selfdoubt you'll be on the right track.
Now get drawing and show us the results! :D
Oh, and dont worry if youre not sure which path you wanna take, I applied to both because i wasnt sure, I got into illustration and Im STILL not sure. Do the kind of work you enjoy creating, and see which path seems to suit your tastes.

To give you a better idea of what the selection process is like they grade your portfolio out of 100 points. 10 points for each exercise.
if you score above 60ish then you are in, if you score above 50ish then you make it to fundies. Below that they reject. Remember it is a sliding scale, some years you will need 54 points to get in, other years it can be more or less. I think it depends on how many applicants they get that year and their overall scores.
I scored 64 myself and the cut off was 61 this year, but they said I did not meet the "educational" requirements so they put me in Fundies. Otherwise, I would have gone there for school.
EDIT: scratch that, actually your score is put on a ranked list. And they pick the top scores for placement. Lets say there is 50 spot for Illustration, then the 50 top people gets it. Then its the Fundies turn. But generally you are expected to score above 50 to have a chance.

Thankyou both for your advice in this manner.
I decided to get out the old draw-er-inos, and see what happens. I guess this 'self portrait' (which looks less like me, and more like an anatomically questionable B-Movie actor) is the first thing i've really drawn all year.
15800
Of course, this is a very weak sketch, done with only one pencil, and sparse shading.. I'm just hoping to use it as a benchmark, so I can look back in a week/month/year and say 'wow, was i really that bad??' ..
Thats the best case scenario anyway. I also took it to photoshop to increase contrast and descrese brightness, since the scanner likes to do the opposite.

Thats a solid foundation to take off from!
Get to work, start drawing everyday and start a thread in the sketchbook section to track your progess!
Get your hands on some good anatomy and figure drawing books. (Figure Drawing for all its Worth by Andrew Loomis online (http://www.gfxartist.com/features/tutorials/7639)) Also make sure to check out the fine arts and studies section (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=7)
As I said, you've got a good foundation going on in terms of hand-eye coordination. Keep pushing yourself, its a matter of practice and learning how to see. Try doing still life studies, trying to stay ass accurate in your shapes and angles as you can. It'll help build your observational foundation in all other aspects as well.

It seems to me that the first thing I really need to do is get new glasses/contacts. :perv:
Five years ago i started wearing glasses for distance, but I could always see things up close without a problem.. or so I thought. :^^;:
I was squinting uselessly throughout this one. I didn't use the glasses i have, since they don't seem to help much anymore, and wearing them usually gives me a headache. Even two or three feet away, my details were already getting fuzzy on me. :[
I picked up a copy of 'drawing on the right side of the brain' and decided to start by working from that.. hence, the portrait i guess.. the second exercise is to draw a person from memory.. this turned out to be much harder than I had originally anticipated. :painting: I decided to go for the figure, but i started with the head, thinking of one person, and it ended up looking like another person i know, who has the same haircut..
Anywho, I'm starting to think that maybe I can do this. Just need to get my ass in gear!

Just need to get my ass in gear!
you can do it!! i've heard great thing about that book as well... i got myself a copy recently, have not yet had a chance to jump into it.. i figure no matter what you're able to do, you can always make a jump in improvement. don't get discouraged if you seems to not be improving for a while, one of my instructors in my first year at sheridan said that it's usually at the point that you're so frustrated with lack of improvement that you are about to experience a huge transition. he said he'd seen it happen time and time again.. don't be like so many others and give up... life is meant to be lived doing something you love to do.
good luck, i hope to see you next year!

Got my schedule. Looks like a couple things still need to be ironed out. I have one class that doesn't have a day yet and is TBA.
Otherwise looks like a pretty heavy schedule, Mondays are 11-6.
Good news is that I have Vivien Ludlow as a teacher again, and I always enjoyed her classes in Animation fundies.

Lo! Hey guys :)
Got the schedule. Seems ok. We'll see how it'll work out :) AND if it'll stay that way :)
Since i'm in Canada now, i was wondering if any of you guys were going to arrive at Sheridan a little bit earlier (as in, before the orientation day) to sniff around a bit? I'm planning to drop by there for the international center and some other spots i wanna check out and i was wondering if anyone would have time to look around together?
Less then two weeks before the term starts! Excited?

O, and do they often end up changing a lot? I kind of like my schedule right now. Although, never having done it before I don't know if it is really good or not.

Hello everyone:bashful: , been watching these threads daily but didn't have the chance to post that much.
Got my schedule today, I am guessing that every Animation students have the same schedule, I have TBA on Visual Concepts Lab. aswell.
Can anyone tell me how close the building Sheldon Levy Centre J102 and Oakville G302 is, cuz I have a class that ends at 1:00PM on heldon Levy Centre J102 and one class that starts at 1:00PM Oakville G302.:[
Oh, and one more question, are first year Animation Students allowed to have an elective? or 6courses the max?
Any information you guys give will be greatly appreciated. Thanks :bashful:

To answer Sanbys question, the 3d design course in fundies if its still the same as when i took it is just building stuff out of clay, paper, cardboard etc. If you have bill ottomeier or whatever for your teacher, you will find yourself staying to get the handouts and then leaving shortly thereafter, as he doesnt really teach anything AT all. He was my teacher, i think i went to maybe 5 or 6 classes of his, and I got a B+ final semester.
Drizzt, I bet you Sheridan will have the rooms they planning on using ASAP finished asap, and the rest will be slowly chugging along. OR we will be taught in unfinished rooms until they are finished, based on previous experience.
Also, Ive got 6 courses, and no electives either, and have no idea if or where im supposed to choose them or even if first years get electives either. Im going into my first year animation as well, and im kind of confused on that matter!

I'm pretty sure we only get 6 courses, and won't have electives until we hit 4th year. I'm pretty excited about the schedule cept for this on the bottom:
Meeting Information Not Available: ANIM 17198 (P06) Lecture Visual Concepts Start Date:09/05/2006
err? I hope this is the usual fuckup, since I don't think any classes are on the 5th.

edit: oh, and just to make sure there are no more schedule fuckups, could some illu person confirm that these are all the courses i should be in this semester:
2 life deawing 1 classes, 2 composition and rhetoric classes(1lab and 1lecture), 2 conceptual process1 classes and 2 basicdesign1 classes. There is a blatand lack of courses with the words drawing and/or painting to be seen, so Im wondering if this is the usual workload...

umm.. dude you're missing my two favourite classes... looks like they've still got you part time....
there are two painting and drawing classes with the title "Painting & Drawing", and a computer studies class....
looks like you've got the same hours as me except for monday.... here's my schedule:
Monday:Composition & Rhetoric - 1-4pm
Tuesday:Conceptual Process - 9-12pm
Wednesday: Computer Studies 12-3pm
Thursday: Life Drawing 9-12pm, Basic Design 1-4pm
Friday: Painting & Drawing 8-11am & 12-3pm
at first i was bummed about no days off.. but this way i don't have days to slack, i'll have my week and weekends separate... and what better way to end the week than 6 hours of the best class?

if you arrive to pearson before 12 am, i believe if you go down to the bottom floor of the arrivals level theres a desk where you can inquire about shuttle buses from toronto to oakville. Otherwise the best way is to take a GO bus from pearson to oakville, all the buses are on the bottom floor of arrivals level, just ask a clerk for assistance.

If it means anything at all (don't know if someone else mentioned this) but odds are if your schedule is messed up right now about 25 other people are probably staring at the same issue.
Luckily (for sheridan's computers) this isn't a typical university and we all have the same courses... still contact them though.

From what I remember you can pick it up at orientation by presenting your tuition reciet to the bookstore... you can also pick it up anytime during the first week of school (which is probably better)... you shouldn't need anything from it really your first week of classes.

Having two days off is... Unusual, at least from what I know. One is usually the norm. Although when I did Animation Fundies last year we didn't get a day off.
Usually the same schedule is used throughout the year. However, if it goes anything like last year, some people got swapped around with other groups. Two from ours and two from the other group at the start of the 2nd semester; for no apparent reason. So obviously some things may change, but if everything runs well you'll have the same schedule.

Awww moofy we missed each other! I was at Sheridan around 10/11 today :/ Grrr, if only i had got my internet connection earlier we might have met :/
If you saw a blonde girl in a tshirt of the color of this background with a black, poodle design on it then you saw me :)
It's a shame we're not in the same prog but who knows we might have a chance to meet anyway :D
hey atazure, my schedule looks like this:
Mon: 08:00 am - 11:00 am DRAWING
06:00 pm - 09:00 pm 3D DESIGN
Tue: --
Wed: 01:00 pm - 04:00 pm PAINTING
Thu: 11:00 am - 02:00 pm 2D DESIGN
03:00 pm - 06:00 pm IMAGING SYSTEMS 1
Fri: 02:00 pm - 05:00 pm IDEAS/IMAGES LECTURE
not similar at all >.< except for the lecture
...EMO, atleast ONE of the things matching :/ Hmmm but the means that there's a lot of students for the program if there are different schedules '_' Hmm.
So how about that meeting on the 8th? Anyone knows any spots? I only know where the main and residence entrances are (lame :( ), but i might be dropping by Sheridan on thursday to throw around some applications for the cafeteria and such, anyone internested in joining? :3

REDnima, i know how you feel. I live in old oakville, and have to take two buses to get to Sheridan so going there feels like a little hassle ;P I'll be dropping by tomorrow too (since i got my bus pass), interested in joining in?

Rednima, just leave it all at home during the first week of classes... you won't need it. You may as well bring your painting supplies to your first painting class, but unless they tell you in advance it's really unlikely that you'll need those.

Just got back myself. Don't worry so much the first week, you probably won't be using much if anything from the kit then, and the teachers will let you know what to bring on the first day. For Life drawing you will probably need to bring your news print pad and some conte on the first day.
Also, didn't see anyone today, I reached the entrance to Scaet at about 5-10 after 12pm, but didn't know who to look for. I did go to the animation orientation, so maybe some of you were there.
Ran into Cliff who's now a third year (he was one of the three third years answering questions at the Q&A), who I'd been in Art Fundies with a while back. He was saying he might recruit me to help do a bit of work on his group film for the year, that'll be pretty cool if he lets me.
EDIT: Oh yeah, RED, you may need paint for your painting class on your first day. Especially if you have Brian as a teacher.

wow. i went to sheridan on friday.. by myself...it was crazy. first of all, i totally forgot about the free art kit that us fundies are getting. so thanks to the papers on the walls i got to the room..and it was so stupid since it was in the beginning of the day that they gave it to me. so as i was yanking it off the table i realized i wasnt gona be able to go anywhere with it. i bet people were laughing at me sine im so small carrying this load of watever was in there lol. i didnt even look. then i had to go to the bookstore to buy me a lock so i can find a locker for the burden that is my kit.
so then i forgot to write down the number of my locker so now i have no idea where it is lol. gah i need a guide ...
anyways. i missed the orientation >.<
so anyways, i changed my schedule and now i only have to go to school 3 days a week :teeth: and i was hoping you guys could tell me if i have good teachers or not:

3D Design : Susan Beniston
Imaging Systems: Patricia Delaney (whats imaging systems anyway?)
Ideas/Images Lecture: Joachim Oepkes
Drawing: Megan Williams

I had Susan Beniston for 3D design way back when I was in fundies. She's a really nice person and helped me select pieces for my illustration portfolio when it came time. Make sure you ask alot of questions and show her what you're doing as you're working it.
I also had Megan williams for drawing... she's also really nice and will give you lots of her time and feedback if *you ask alot of questions*. The stuff she teaches you first semester might not seem like it makes very good portfolio pieces BUT what it does do is turn you into a much better artist. Don't slack off and give her assignments ALOT of your time... they're very effective.
Hope that helped

I couldn't help but notice that Amazing Action Ape uploaded some of his Animation Portfolio into his sketchbook.. (incredible stuff, considering he says he only spent 6 hours on it O.o)
I hope i'm not asking a naughty-no-no here, but I don't suppose any of the other acceptees could be conned into showing off their portfolios? I'm really curious to know what it takes to get an acceptance.

hahaha, I lowballed that figure a little bit mate. ;) It was probably closer to 10 or 11 hours, as I look back on it. I put in old pieces for my 5 free ones, and had some old life drawings/animal drawings for the life drawing requirements, so really no work went into those sections. I had also done an animation portfolio a few years back that was accepted, so I had a pretty damn good idea what they were looking for. Knowing that sure made the portfolio a ton easier the second time around. :)
As to whether or not others will show their portfolios, who knows! I think a few people had posted their illustration portfolios too. Id say look around and see what you can find.

I'm one of those 6 straight hours of classes tomorrow suckers. At least it doesn't start until noon? I'm really not sure what to bring. I mean, I think I know, I'm probably just starting to get a bit anxious.
