Hello. I'm Rosemary and I'm currently really into this style;
471660
471663
471662
Those are Lou Romano, he works at Pixar
471666
471664
And these are from Samurai Jack, which Genndy Tartakovsky is the creator of. (You may guess I'm from an animation background)

I don't really know what to call this style, it's heavily simplified, more about colour scheme and shape than detail, it's very suggestive and a bit retro. And I love it. I would like to look at other artist's work that is like this. Do you know any?

Thanks.

If you are liking this stylized look I would suggest maybe looking at the United Productions of America (UPA for short). They were a company that spawned in the 50s off of Disney during the strikes that were going on there; their work has become pretty difficult to find sadly, but they were some early pioneers within animation to really start pushing this stylized approach. Here are a couple of examples:

John Hubley's Rooty Toot Toot

One of the Gerald McBoing Boing shorts (this one by Bobe Cannon)

Craig McCracken is great to look at; he had some strong influence by UPA in his earlier work

Those are a few that sort of show what UPA was about, though they really did much more than just those. If you have the Hellboy DVD there are actually a few UPA shorts in the special features, so that's another place to find a few example of this work.

Not to sound like an advertisement, but if you are interested in this area I'd suggest checking out the book Cartoon Modern by Amid Amidi; his book is extremely comprehensive and covers the genre very nicely. Also John K (who worked on Ren and Stimpy) has been a large part in bringing back the retro look within animation (the log shorts in Ren and Stimpy are a good example of this), so he's not a bad guy to look at. Here's his blog: http://johnkstuff.blogspot.com/ . Lastly, this is a site with some nice stylized vector (I'm pretty sure it's vector) work http://welcometobigcity.blogspot.com/ ; found it on this site a little while ago actually (there might be a stylized artists thread floating around here somewhere).

There's a good amount of stuff out there and the internet/blogs/forums are making it easier to find, thank goodness. Hope I could help at least a bit, and good luck! :)

Check out the book, Cartoon Modern: Style and Design in 50s animation, you'll love it.

I'm a big Genndy Tartakovsky and Romano fan too so if you like those guys check out these recent Calarts graduates as well:

I suppose if you can give the style a name it would be called minimal realism as that's the term used to describe Charles Harper who used to draw and paint this way.

^^Check out that Royal Bank of Canada commercial as well. Good stuff.

You may also want to try Tim Biskup.

After seeing him, initially, I thought he'd worked on Samurai Jack (and yeah, I love that style, too. :) ). Apparently not, though - but he's been asked that before.

Looks like his site has fewer images than when I last checked (odd) but he's just another one you may want to add to your list. :)
