With Tim Bruckners awesome character study work for inspiration I have set out to do some studies of my own to further my technique and speed up my sculpting. With that in my mind I set some ground rules for myself.......1. One a week 2. Four hour time limit 3. Work form a drawing or picture.

Here is the first example........

As I limited my time to four hours, there are some differences between the drawing and the sculpt that I would go back and fix. Eye shape, jowls and head shape etc.... but my rule is four hours and so I stopped. Love to know what you guys(and gals) think. Thanks

If you havent seen Ben Caldwells work check it out in this book, it is great drawing and cartooning reference that works great for sculptors.

its pretty cool even if it's not exactly yhe same as the drawing. it's like what he'd look like a couple of frames before he hit the pose in the drawing.

Thanks the more I look at it the more I agree, like I said there is a lot I would change but the rules I set for myself were 4 hours no more.

It's a good sculpt. It's obviously the character but the eyebrows and forehead lines could be pushed a little more. That's my only nitpick.

I saw "Ben Caldwell" in the title on the forum front page and pretty much ran to this thread. :P That's a good likeness, but you should take into account the advice other people have left here.

I think in regards to sculpting cartoon characters, you're lacking some confidence in exaggerating features. The eyebrows should be taken even further to make one eye bulge out compared to the other one (raise the stage-left eyebrow more), and also "spin" the upper lip to face stage-left more, and move the jaw towards stage-right.

Just taking what you have and adding some more exaggeration to it (one of the key rules that Ben Caldwell states in that very book actually).

Very nice work, especially in 4 hours, but try to have your next cartoony sculpt with *too much* exaggeration, and see if you need to "pull it back" or not.
