woo hoo! th-E has a sketchbook!

i'm a fan.

from waaaay back.

This is definitely a very experimental style. cool to see some 2D stuff out of you after having aced and developed your own technique for the mask ownage. and installation art. I remember that shiny red skull still life; and the guest appearance from "Happy." hehe... was that the same session?

i am subscribed, so knock us dead!

The red skull still life is post Happy - done in the last couple months while staring at these two skulls and, saying to myself, why don't I do something with these things. But speaking of Happy, I've got to do something with him - humor him a bit.

Hello,
you've got quite a peculiar style, one thing bothers me though, the arms of the girl on the second pic, they are, well, not human if you see what i mean, she's got no shoulder, and she's got the neck of a minotor.
On the other hand i love the skulls of the third pic.
keep posting

chane - thanks. my aim is to post sketches/drawings/etc. twice weekly.

feil magnus - the skulls feel your love and thank thee. i agree the neck should have been thinner and a bit longer on the second pic. that sketch began with no layout of proportion - just pen to paper with a focus on varying line weight.

haha...

i haven't seen you render like that since the blue viking statue color theory FC daZe... and lemme say that your efforts are damned impressive, if an unexpected change in pace for y-E.

re:INK. I'm liking the "rows of combed stipple" that i'm seeing that flesh out these ink studies. a refreshing change of stipple pace. it's like free jazz for the eyes. Ornette Coleman squawking on the optical nerves. You should really check out some of the ink stuff that Special K (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=136319) has been working on ... he's kind of pushing the boundaries of what kind of textures can be accomplished with ink. you guys should compare philosophies as there are similarities of strength and artistic vision.

anyway... hell yeah man... keep the updates coming. I like how even though i haven't seen rendered shit from you for years, the almost... lesseee.... alphonse mucha-ish / adam hughes style pencils on that nude are looking way-pro... yr kind of creeping me out. hehe

a sketch of a young lady sleeping

great-guggenmaneuver! - i checked out what special K is doing inkwise - wow! haven't yet conversed/replied/etc. yet as i was mind-numbed. per now, i like taking photos and a smaller point Rapidograph pen, or brush in the case of the self-portrait, and just going to draw-town. try to do someth-ink akin to a detailed etching and preferably on a drawing paper with some tooth to it.

mucha/adam hughes/frank cho - broke out a 2b pencil that must have held some of their life in it because both those drawings came effortless and just felt right.

more ink, pencil and a mask or two to come!

sleepy ET burps teh baby...
sorry i've been a little incognegro lately, but definitely i saw this update back when you posted it and really like the ink direction you are headed in. seriously, at some point yourself, special*K, and I will have to have an ink throwdown conference at some point. More so that you guys can teach me some tricks basically. portrait of rittenhaus is a great likeness... seriously i hope you are continuing the ink explorations with a vigilance. and the forthcoming jesus + chx thing is so damn funny and the style works out really well. good narrative.

see th-E soon hopefully. gotta catch up. :)

p.s. you should put the newpost url to your sketchbook in your post signature so that people can link to your work from your post. you can do this through the UserCP link at the top left of the ca page. anyways, this is how the code would work, basically:
"{link="http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=137287&goto=newpost"}sketchway o' th-E{/link}" And then replace the "{}"s with "[]"s.

Taken a bit of an interest in superheroines (just another good excuse to draw women)... and a continuing interest in subjects of a religious nature...

Guoohhggss - the ink is still being approached with due vigilance as is a growing/evolving interest in acrylic painting and colour theory. Art Thursdays have summoned the acrylic beast from within.

Hey bud just checking back and yet again you please. Your Zatanna character is probably one of my favorite drawings in this thread. It has such a great balance of line and shape, and positive and negative space.

On your dictator portraits I love how you some how made all of them seem so gross. I think the only crit I have on those would be to try and think about the direction of your "shading" lines.
The usual rule is to try and have your lines follow the form, which I see in parts of each portrait, but other parts the lines kind of do their own thing. Maybe it's just a matter of committing to one or the other.

nice work!
at first glance i was really horrified by the dictators by some reason... and i think i figured out why. the alternate bands of hatching take the already tending-to-stylize outline, and push it beyond the cartoonish. these swaths of parallel lines simultaneously flatten, but then also push the form out some. the effect kind of reminds me of the weirdly deflated yet somehow likably cutesy cartoonish heads done by this painter jack levine (http://hirshhorn.si.edu/dynamic/collection_images/full/66.3062.JPG). Oh, and also look at this one... a napolean (http://images.artnet.com/artwork_images_627_202962_jack-levine.jpg). It makes for a really interesting effect, "leaky rubber ball-head" or something like that...particularly given the subject matter.

hehehe... "my achey tits." The other sketchbook pages here are looking damn nice, i should show the ww and zatana to my dc fangirl fam.

ah man, i think i figured out what i'ma do with the big canvas you hooked me up with. probably gonna do a gouache page or something like that to figure out the composition, but 'tis coming together. vertical!

cheers to th-E,
more talk soon :)

HHH great point about the schizophrenic line work. trying to figure out how to mix contour lines with a rash, energetic, hopefully, mass-evoking build up of lines. sometimes i get into a drawing and the form dissolves into sheer mark-making insanity.

guggem i remember some of the levine copies you did in pastel for mott's class - that was some cool s@%t, albeit middle eastern and african dictators/fat cats are a lot less, well, fat.

feel free to share my contributions to the dc universe, which they wouldn't let me auction on ebay - damned copyright monarchs!

big canvas and gouache - keep talkin'

Dude the art cards rock! Man I super dig some of them.

And I totally understand losing yourself in the mark making. There's so many times I sit down to try and draw out some concept art or something and end up with a whole page of scribbles.
