Hi, I'm posting to gather support for a man who'll be put to death on Tuesday, September 23rd if no one helps to stop the execution and give him another trial. He was convicted in 1991 for a crime he claims he did not commit, and for which there is no physical evidence against him. His conviction was based totally on unsure eyewitness accounts, and since the original trial, all but three of his witnesses have either recanted or contradicted their testimonies.

I know I can't really avoid a heated debate about the death penalty or the case itself, but all I'm asking you to do is sign up and send the pre-made email to the State Board of Pardons and Parole or, of course, send a personalized email. You could even edit the pre-made if you don't have time for an original. Takes 5 minutes!

I don't have a blog/myspace/facebook, so I thought this would be the best way to bring attention to the issue. Please help! It would be a terrible shame for someone to be put to death without sufficient evidence.

Please reply if you've taken action.

Sorry to bump the thread, but there's only a few days left! It could use some support.

may i ask how?

You've just made a little bit of me just die now. Knowing that once I click the little x button on this tab that i could kill a man. So i click the links and nope i have no chance in helping this man. I feel helpless now and sad and feel like i just killed a man all at once. Thank you.

Although this is a valid concern. I am not saying that your view on this is wrong i agree with it but please, i thought there was some petition or something i could do.

What do you mean? If you click the link, there's a picture of an envelope-- that takes you to the page with the pre-made letter (at the bottom of the page). All you have to do is sign up and sign your name.

i haven't taken action, but i heard about this update to the story this morning on npr.

The U.S. Supreme Court gave a reprieve to a Georgia inmate less than two hours before his scheduled execution Tuesday for the 1989 slaying of an off-duty police officer.

Supporters of 39-year-old Troy Davis have called for a new trial as seven of the nine witnesses who helped put him on death row recanted their testimony. Protesters had arrived by the busload to protest the execution, carrying signs with slogans like "Justice for Troy Davis" and wearing blue T-shirts emblazoned with "I am Troy Davis." A crowd of about 50 erupted in cheers when the stay, granted around 5:20 p.m., was announced.

Troy Davis spoke to the crowd by phone, sounding upbeat and optimistic.

"This is not over yet," said Davis, whose execution had been scheduled for 7 p.m. "This is the beginning of my blessing."

I absolutely dont want to start a vent against/in favor of death penalty but i really wonder if this kind of event isnt just bound to happen over and over again as long as its up to human beings to decide wether someone has to be killed or not for having committed a crime even when noone actually witnessed what happened...
(no rethoric here :P)

I’m glad he got a stay. Capital punishment is barbaric.

The death of one innocent person is not enough to make up for those that were guilty. I have no wish to have blood on my hands.

And we call ourselves civilised.

Big thanks to everyone who helped out. The case still needs media attention though, so I suggest sending some letters to newspapers, blogs, and news shows to get the word out if you have free time (it only takes a few minutes to get a news site, click "contact us" and send a suggestion--some even have submission forms for news tips). On the day of his execution, about 700 new articles appeared under a Google search for "troy davis."

I can't stand the idea of capital punishment, especially in the case of a person who just might be innocent. I will try to do what I can to inform others.

I wonder how people would react if he was defenatly found guilty with further investigation.

That would certainly be a kick in the pants, but they haven't exactly proven his guilt yet, given the witnesses' new testimonies, so I think he needs a fair trial.

The Campaign to End the Death Penalty is planning to hold an emergency protest and press conference for Troy Davis tomorrow, Monday, Sept. 29th in New York City. 12:00 Noon, at 26 Federal Plaza.

Tomorrow the US Supreme Court will be meeting to decide whether or not to hear Troy Davis's case. If they decide not to hear it, he can be executed as early as the same day.

It's not the death penatly which is wrong as much as a condemnation to it based on shaky evidence. The evidence should be 100% conclusive that the criminal is guilty and unredeemable without a single doubt. There should be some sort of system that prevents rich people from overabusing the court system against some schmoe with zero resources.

The Supreme Court is believed to have met again today to consider hearing Troy Davis's case. They are expected to release their decision on the 14th. Last time, they had no word on their decision.

Keep with Amnesty International's US site for updates. Tell a friend, send a news tip to a paper/site/blog, if you have the time. Really takes less than 5 minutes to contact a news source via their website.

I made some mini flyers to hand out and post around, feel free to print them if you want to:

Here's the original flyer:

Update: Sadly, today, the US Supreme Court has decided to deny Troy Davis's case. He could be executed in a matter of days.
