View Full Version : Dreadful "Now Evaluating Brush Directions..." thingy

Yay, now I did capture a dab and made a brush. But why it takes ages to, for example, change size? Changing to 120px takes 5-8 seconds. Bigger sizes takes much more time. In photoshop it's instant. I have pretty strong PC (3GHz and 4GB of RAM). Even sometimes before Brush Creator opens, the "Now Evaluating [..]" pops few times.

Can it be caused by size of image that I used for Capture Dab? Spacing is pretty big, 66%. It's set as Soft Cover and 0.8 Random Jitter, 24% Resaturation, 59% Bleed and that's all I think.

I have feeling that Painter's Brush Creator is kinda slugish. Maybe it's just program, or I'm doing something wrong. There are brushes that are pretty fast, For example, pixlart's Cloud Sponge works without much slugging to 200px size and changes size fastly.

EDIT: To precise it - brushes works fine, but changing sizes, opening Brush Creator, selecting brush takes a lot of time.

one factor would be the size of the brush, but also i noticed that having angle expression and very small angle steps makes this take forever. if your using angle use bigger steps like 12 or 15. when i was making customs i always made sure the captured dab was within 250 x 250

Oh, yeah, it solved problem. I've had 0 angle step :P Now it works to my liking, thanks!

But, by the way, what are other possible factors that affects on speed? Beside spacing and captured dab size?

I highly don't recommend using brush creator - technically it runs a separate instance of painter for the only sake of creating a separate 500*500 canvas for brush testing;
window -> brush controls has almost all brush creator features, with exception for brush randomizer (never used it, though someone could find it useful), and doesn't take time to load.

To open the Brush Controls' palettes in a docked group, use:

Window > Brush Controls > Show General

It's much faster and easier than using the Brush Creator!

The Brush Controls' palettes contain all of the controls found on the Brush Creator's Stroke Designer tab.

In combination with the Property Bar (which has one or two controls not found on either the Brush Creator's Stroke Designer tab or the Brush Controls' palettes, you have everything you need to adjust brush variants however you want.

Use Preferences > Customize Keys to add a keyboard shortcut for Show/Hide General. Then, when you want the Brush Controls' palettes out of the way, you can close them by clicking the X in the upper right corner of the docked group and reopen the Brush Controls' palettes docked group by using the keyboard shortcut for Show/Hide General.

To set up the keyboard shortcut:

Open Preferences > Customize Keys.

In the Shortcuts: drop down list, choose Application Menus.

Click the plus sign to the left of Window to expand the list.

Scroll down and click the plus sign to the left of Brush Controls.

Highlight Show/Hide General and type a keyboard shortcut not already assigned to another command.

Click the Done button to close the Preferences dialog box.

Hey, thanks a lot! After re-reading Hot-rodding and experimenting, brush is far more faster, but still not fast as in Photoshop (explaining - I'm trying to create Painter version of Barontieri's Photoshop brushes) and seems I can't tweak more. Perhaps it's just that Photoshop is more optimized than Painter? I'm saying about 400-500+ px size :P Nothing horrible, since I work mainly with much smaller sizes, but..

About using Brush Controls' palettes, yes, it seems to be faster. By the way, since my monitor has 16:10 ratio, not all usable palettes are visible, but you can always move half of thome to aside (two lists with brush settings laying side by side, pretty useful).

Jin - when you're going to release Painter book? :P

;)

It seems I already have, at least one book... probably a few.

The pages are scattered all over the Painter community in forums, newsgroups, and on e-mail lists.... and on my website.
