Hi CA,
My name is Craig. I was referred here by a friend, who is both an illustration major and my roommate here at College for Creative Studies.

DISCLAMER:
WELL, ITS BEEN A WHILE LAST SINCE THIS SKETCHBOOK HAS BEEN UPDATED, SO YES, OLDER POSTS AND WORKS HAVE BEEN POSTED FIRST AND UNTIL THOSE POSTS ARE BROUGHT UP TO SPEED, I'M BACKTRACKING.

Clodioz || lol thanks, this site has me in this relentless process of photodocumenting and posting. Another set tomorrow from another sketchbook...keep in mind that i am a auto design major...lol, i just have this illustrative mind that i kinda hate myself for (its a traitor art to my field...sorry, no offense to you guys. LOVE CA!)

delmar || no, i wish.

Man, some of you guys here are insane with that. I plan on trying some digital rendering soon, maybe Christmas time when I go back to Miami, back to my job where i can get a discount on a Wacom Bamboo. idk, its something i really want to do but simultaneously don't because i was trained old school.

The following project was to create a human powered machine, similar to the impact of bicycles and rollerblades...I created the Kinetica as the mechanical spirit of walking and the human motion of running. It uses a compound magnet array in each of the wheels, amplifying the motions of a user's walking strut, thus effectively amplifying nature. in the sketches, i work out in detail what exactly im drawing and figuring out.

Joce || no problem, thats why we all are here, to contribute both experience and our understanding of art, subjectively. I felt that commenting on your work was going to do as much for you as posting to this site was to do for me, help my skills improve with oversight and creative constructive criticism. This helps everyone who wants to get better in any artform, for me and my profession, is an essential utility we both emphasize and champion because it filters out good ideas from the great ideas and develops great ideas into revolutionary...

here's more from Kinetica, with that reply, and for any other response i make on here, will accompany with more work. I'm working harder than ever to supply more work for display especially the IDW #74- Asteroid Miner, which i have big plans for...stay tuned to that...

Panel 12-13

I developed further from concept to refinement, detailing two distinct version of the Kinetica concept. The Hima concept model was to be a urban, streetable version made to not only move around in urban enviroments, but enable the user to stunt and trick with the unit, allowing a greater range of physical expression. This lent itself to me, since I skate (aggressive inline), i wanted to push the concept to the subculture of extreme sports. The unit seems to play well with the idea of huge airs, grinds, and the overall stance of the unit gave a very rebellious "funk" if you will to the very intelligent feel of what direction the Kinetica was taking.

Here's panel 12-13.

hey man thank you very much for your comment! and wow nice range of vocabulary! You know its quite funny actually, before you commented on my sketchbook i was on yours, i looked at all your stuff, bookmarked your sketchbook to write on it later and i even answered the poll, which i thought was a good idea so i made one myself :D all this before you commented i was pretty shocked to see you happened to fall on mine, felt like you were watching me haha. I really love your sketches especially the elephant one and the sketchbook scan with the yellow watercolor. Very amazing and inspirational stuff all throughout And i really like the mixture of agony and his state of confusion in the face of your shooting soldier, the only thing that might somewhat improve your sketches, not that they really need too much improvement; is some shading to add volume to it just like you did with the elephant and soldier. However it is not necessary for all your pieces. Thank you again for your great critique :)

5scoop || Thanks for the commentary, especially in the level of detail in your response. I appreciate you subscribing to my sb, expect a wide range of my skills and concepts to be posted in the near future. I really took to that piece as a substatinally thought provoking, more plausably classic artistic subject matter, apart from illustration. It was a great composition.

One note about my work, the self portrait piece of self reflection, in yellow, is actually acrylic washes layered over gesso treated pages, which the entire book was soaked in water for several days, left to dry, then repeated twice, leaving behind a textured treatment on the paper and the fibers stretched. My methodical process of sketchbook composition begins in deciding the ultimate concentration on what I aim to study for the sketchbook, which is dually noted in its title. I am partial to the destruction of paper, only to work on it again, pushing the medium into the paper material and developing the "soul" of the sketchbook as the artwork itself.

Well, as I promised, more Kinetica panels...

Panels 14-15 describes the evolution of the Kinetica over the course of 10-15 years to a race model. The Kaze concept model, designed for high speed running features taller, slimmer tires with more powerful drive magnets. The runner is treated as a Formula One race car, treated with a steel alloy silkscreen application to their bodies and etched with team graphics and colors. The runner takes to a linear course, that runs over a given distance, like a stage race, through over various terrain. The runners, due to the effieciency of the unit and the magnetic amplification of the operation of the Kinetica, the races are held over hundreds of miles of landscape on hybrid asphalt trackts that weave in and out of the landscape's terrain and the racers speed about at speeds over 80 miles an hour.

these new wheel pieces are fantastic!! the concept is way cool! I only say this now because I get this feedback all the time and see it in my work but, these pieces would get the vote of Wow if you worked out the anatomy a little better-the faces and bodies too, some of them are dead on and several are worth re working maybe with reference photos until you can nail it on your own. the concept and your skills as a draftsman are fantastic! work on this portion of your work and all will vote Wow... So much progress in this thread, way cool.

kelly x || thanks for your commentary, yes, I agree with the figure work especially in the Kinetica project, but keep in mind that project was completed over 3 years ago, in 11th grade. I stated the origin of the project and its process earlier in the forum. These pieces are of archival prospects and I have yet to post any recent or current work. Keep in mind that being new to CA, i wish to illustrate not only my talent and skill, but the origin therein. There has been a lot of progress made over the past 5 years since I have began my involvement with Industrial Design, so to get to know my story, i felt that it was necessary to begin at the highlights of my past.

kelly x || the Kinetica project was a human powered machine concept done in 11th grad for Oakley Design. I left a crit, i believe to your sb and found it to be quite dynamic and very very sensual. A very striking aspect to your sb is the use of color and the sensuality exhibited in your composition, especially the pulp fiction piece, absolutely great.

Sketch || yes yes, I listen to a lot of vibes when designing and to inspire when creating music too. FlyLo is absolutely great, Coltrane, YNQ, Madlib, J Dilla, just to name a few, love those vibes in my head when creating...

How much water and gesso did you use? What other techniques have you used that you have found useful to manipulate your paper?

September 21st, 2008, 11:45 PM
Now, why would you ask that poll question, when you already know the answer to it, YES YOU OVER QUALILFY,LMAO, remove that poll question, very inspirational man, LMAO, great stuff here man, you have such control over using pen, keep em coming. Thanks

f1guremeout
September 22nd, 2008, 12:00 AM
FearSelf || According to my memory, (since it has been quite a while since) its experimentation and really pushing the bounds of the concept of medium abuse. I used to soak my sketchbooks in a basin of water, usually with an amount of used teabags for coloring or watered down gesso, then bury it somewhere for several days, usually during the wet months in Miami, as to literally soak in the earthy character of the soil into the fibers of the pages. Be aware that you must be prepared for anything: bugs, roots, even the occasional small plants growing into it, which you can control if you strewn lines of growth formula throughout the book to incite growth. Really just experiement with similar medium distress techniques. I came up with the concept in high school, as a means to explore abstraction on textured surfaces and understanding the paper plane itself as its own medium. Plus, it captures nature in a very distinct way.

JesArt || in fact, that poll question is redundant, however, I posted that as a litmus to this site. I really don't know how to remove it. I have a rolling response-post-reply sequence set in for my sb forum, so the more responses and critiques i receive, each reply receives a new post. I have plenty of work, not to mention that so far, I haven't post any new work. I am still posting relatively older work i have recently archived. So be prepared to see some more exciting, more elaborate, more masterful pieces.

JesArt || Well, I am already accomplishing a promising carrer in automotive design study, I have been involved with design for 4 years, specifically transportation design for 2 years and product design for 3 years. "I am already accomplishing a promising career in automotive design study"
... Ok... It seems that humbleness isn't your major skill! :)
Anyway, about the crit I made on your art, I don't know why you thought it was not adapted to your sb... To keep working on clean and "one shot" lines is (to my eyes) something that every artist here should try to do, even those who have a promising career as automotive design student. :)

f1guremeout
September 22nd, 2008, 01:54 PM
Clochette || lol, i apologize if I come off that way, i don't intend to be seen as a pompous asshole or anything. As for your crit, i did take that into consideration, but remember that this is past work, nothing immediately recent. These sketch were meant to be loose, contoured, gestural lines that were more intended to keep the eye "flowing" throught the form than to tighten the form into a defined shape. (Not to disregard what you said, it's just I haven't posted any new work yet, so prepare to see more and more updates. I'll mention the work completion.)

Thank you though, I appreciate it. :D

hey sweet sb you got here, i like your vehicle designs a lot. i think some more anatomy studies wouldn't hurt, and i would also really like to see you take some of those vehicle sketches and refine them to a finished piece. other than that just keep up the good work.

f1guremeout
September 22nd, 2008, 02:08 PM
thesadpencil || these sketches are still undeveloped and will remain that way, as I have many projects (which you will see) in the works, all of which are of all the commentary you all have been giving. However, I found it beneficial to post a collection of exisiting older works to give somewhat a chronological growth and development aspect to my sb, without having dumped a bunch of new work that may come off unexpected or random. Besides, i rather have a constant feed of work by creating a backlog of work and getting people familar to my style and configuration of my sketchbooks in the beginning rather than through a course of months (I recently joined CA last week.).

MJ_Alcazar
September 22nd, 2008, 02:32 PM
Wow, I enjoyed going through your sketchbook. Some really good stuff in here. I love ink work, it just scares the crap out of me to do it myself. :) Keep it up!

f1guremeout
September 22nd, 2008, 02:48 PM
MJ_Alcazar || lol, oh now what scares you to do this? Ink is unforgiving, yes, but it really trains your muscle memory and gets your head to understand line efficiency. Really being artistically decisive and confident. Taking risks with form and line is a great way to expand your skills vastly. I tried it in h.s, never looked back, most of my work is in pen. Now it's actually marker (sharpie) is the most frightening. But again, the same benefit, granted that it is going to be hi-contrast but getting accustomed to choosing primary lines and forms that simply and most efficiently describe your concept is one of the more advanced and integral techniques of a designer.

Hey man thanks for the kind words I love the thought that goes into these pieces makes them somewhat of an illustration even though they are concept work
something that i think would be interesting for you to do would be to make a simplified vehicle were the viewer could look at it and slowly figure out how it works, how it turns and accelerates and everything, and for you to make it stripped of eye candy just so we could see a practical vehicle and study it in a way to see what each little part does....
That would be neat, I know i would enjoy seeing that
but keep it up i love the style in these

jedininjaman || thanks for following my sb these past weeks, yea I'll have a more complete package, with more interpretive sketches coming soon...

mAkAm || thanks for the comments, regarding the working materials, that they vary. I'll specify in which project generally what medium it is, but nothing out of the ordinary.

Mainly most of my work is pen, nothing else. Some ink, you can see the contrast and line use in those pieces. Kinetica was a hybrid of color pencil underlay, with a pen detail drawn on top of it (on the same sheet of paper).
As for the storytelling, in industrial design, it's essential to describe in detail a concept to illustrate as provoctively, compelling, and comprehensively as humanly possible. This skill i had developed mainly throughout high school ( i described all of this in my past post replys, please read before commenting) and further interpretive skills i am developing here in college, at College for Creative Studies. I am a Automotive Design Major.

Been a bit strange to fit this into my already stress schedule, but i think now i got a flow going now. i had to do an immense photo session in my house, but i have enough to upload for the next couple weeks.

These images are from a exercise in interior concept design, looking at the 2007 Honda Fit, as a form of form inspiration.

jedininjaman || thanks. Keep in mind that it's all practice, but i have a long way to go. I have plenty more to post but i'll put a batch a day or so, spread it out so everyone has a chance to see all of it. Still trying to judge for the time difference and anticipating the rush of members through the sketchbooks forum. so much more...

I began with interior concepts, as this semester, my focus is within the interior concept design in Automotive design (next semester we switch with the class in Exterior Clay modeling). So i began a slew of drawings...

The interior concepts centered around several concepts which in this phase, Phase 1, I developed later into more concrete comprehension and detail.

1) The Pass-Thru flow was a reminiscent form language i developed for this interior direction, focusing on the harmony of folding planes and cascading shape upon surfacing. Functionally, the user can enjoy this fluid ease of use and integration of his belongings into the vehicle. The concept was to influence the design of storage compartments and allow virtually seamless transition between use and inactivity...

The ease of this Pass Thru concept can be evident in the center console features a enclosed bin, open on both sides, allowing occupants to quickly stash something into a recessed tray within the storage area. The final page in this post displays that initial direction. I removed the Environmental Controls altogether and translated it to a sliding console that is reminiscent of the classic stack, but allows that area to be used for large item to be stored here. One could enter the vehicle and toss whatever in the bin and go.

roidvoid || lol, thanks, but im not the best at this. Im only a student with a lot of practice. A lot of great designers out there, thankfully i know some of them to be mentored by. :)

jedininjaman || normally each page costs me 15-20 minutes. Too long in my book, for my experience. I'm trying to widdle it down to 5-15 minutes flat, marker and all, involving more conceptual exploration of the individual elements of my concept in each panel and considering more elaborate and visually interesting composition and presentation with my sketches.

Its been a while (a LONG while) since I've last posted. Been involved in work deep to my neck over the past few months. I will update on all of that since the last time another time later. For now, i have taken up to participate in the latest IDW, IDW #99 - Ultimate Drawing Tool (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=155958), and looking to make a long time coming worth the wait.

The project:

...So, instead of heaving just the usual single entry with a rendering, for this round you're required to come up with at least 3 different ideas or concepts. Those can be in the form of a single sketch or several sketches with a piece of text to go with it or whatever other form you wish to put it in. However, they should be developed to a point where the viewer can at least understand the idea and is able to judge it on it's worth. A single scribble is not a finished concept usually.

Furthermore, you need to pick one of your concepts and work it out further into a final design and rendering/explanation of that design, much like the usual stuff you'll find in any IDW round. Post the concepts along with your final in a single image in the Finals Thread please.

As you might notice, the deadline is still within a week. However, since I'm working on making IDW round 100 as special and awesome as I can (including prizes and everything!) I might be a bit flexible with this deadline since it might take me a bit more time to organise things. Anyway, be inventive and engage your own creativity!

For the IDW #99 - The Ultimate Drawing Tool. (http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?p=2221741#post2221741)

My proposals:

1) The Duco Lightscribe Unit, a spacial tablet product that allows the user to sketch objects from freespace without the use of a tablet or paper.

How it works:
The user wears the wrist unit that both acts as a holder and charger for the scribe, but the image processor to transmit the live sketch to a linked computer. The user can then use the scribe to sketch objects as they see them and "draw" them as if they were to trace with a finger. The result is complied as lines and strokes on the computer screen.

Bottom line:
Think Cintiq, without a screen. You can sketch directly from your personal perspective without paper or a tablet.

2) NVision Capture Eye Camera, a image capture unit that allows the user to take photos using the blink of an eye.

How it works:

http://www.csmd.ucsb.edu/biology/eye_diagram.jpg

Light passes into the eye naturally from the motions of the iris, controlling light into the lens. From the lens of the eye, the image is reflected, upside-down, on the macula, at the back of the eyeball, in which the retina sends the color information into the brain.

Reference: http://www.nei.nih.gov/health/eyediagram/

In this process, the NVision sends a intermittent infrared light signal that receives light from the retina, as would the brain, and translates the returning information as the captured image. Thus, the user can capture true to life images, shot from not only the personal point-of-view, but even in the user's eyesight capabilities. To capture images, the user presses and holds a "capture" action function, then blinks to capture the last image to pass into the eye. The blink action triggers the unit to capture the last image transmission from the eye and then complies the data into image storage onto the processor that fits onto the eye socket.

Bottom line:
Think hyper resolution digital camera that uses your eye as the lens and shutter.

Damn, this SB makes me wanna stand up and beg for buttermilk. The kids remind me of the film Tekkonkinkrit (just as my frame of reference). The transpo sketches are keen and mean. I really like seeing the progression. Really inspiring. It makes me want to practice or just cut off your hands. Obviously, going forward, you have a bright future in transpo design, but I hope you don't give up on that character element (at least for fun) in the earlier parts. The IDW project turned out nice, best thing on in my opinion. Thanks for all.

Wow, its been a while since things have been able to slow down here and Im not sure how to come back to this other than that I have a ton of new work to upload over the course of a few months to cover the 11 months of work that I have floating around here. I do appreciate any and all that had subscribed.

You will not be disappointed.

Those new to the sb stream, there's a bit of maintainance happening, as I'm replacing older posts with updated media, new scans of the past sketchbooks and higher quality images. If you are at all curious of that work, feel free to comment and I will prioritize on those posts, otherwise, please be patient as more and more are processed.

Anyways, I'm now posting new work not just here, but on The Behance Network as well, in addition to my illustration (which now I have since swtiched to Conceptual Design under Illustration recently) I have postings of my graphic design work. So feel free to check that out, link's in the signature.

LtPlissken || Im glad that you can follow and I wholly appreciate it. Thank you much. To get the color I achieve on the pieces are with a lot of water and soaking acrylic washes into the wet paper. Its all the represent the "sound" i hear from color and the "sound" of the piece. It's crazy, i know, but it's of when I hear music, especially Jazz, I see colors.
