Hey Everyone, I've been keeping a sketchbook blog for about a year and a half, but I know everyone has their own preferences on how they receive information these days. So I thought it would be a good idea to keep a sketchbook here too. I'll post here parallel to my blog.

New Painting! Ladies in a pie... children's nursery ryme or fiendish fantasy?
I was thinking of titling this 'Four and Twenty'
471485
Oil, 17"x24"
Here are some detail shots
471489 471488
I had the girls and the pie drawn from the beginning but I had some trouble figuring out what the background was going to be. I eventually decided on the branches because of how they bring out the nest like feeling of the pie, multiplying the different meanings and associations that the viewer can pull out of this.
I should mention since I just started this sketchbook here, if you want to go back further than what is here, there is a whole year and a half of previous sketches and such to look through on my blog (http://robreyart.blogspot.com).

I´m thrilled you´ve started a sketchbook! You´re one of my favourite artists ^^. I think your colours in particular are amazing. "Pie" blows me away. Wow, such wonderful use of blues, yellows reds and so on ^^ I´m looking forward to seeing more! 5 stars obviously.

Nice work. I really like the colors in your paintings. The sketches rock they got this slight cartoony feel which makes them really interesting.

amazing sb. i love your pencils, you seem to depict the people you draw very well. (the first pencil sketch from the coffee shop looks like seth rogen...just thought i would point that out). i also really like the painterly feel of your paintings. can't wait to see more so keep on posting.

Hey, wow, thanks for all the compliments and feedback everyone!
kaktuzlime - Thank you, I'm quite flattered to be among anyone's favorites!
JesArt - I don't time myself or anything so it's hard to say. I just draw and have fun with a sketch until it's done, I guess a rough estimate would be anywhere from 1-15 minutes per sketch.

Thanks again everyone for the praise.
TASmith - I'm not exactly sure how fast I get my proportions in. Sometimes I don't even do it first, though I probably always should. Proportions are pretty quick though, and really, I guess my drawings come out best when I have proportions in mind at all times, not just when I start.
But wait! There's more...

Fantastic work, really cool to see such a variety of people and expressions. I really like the hair too, how often do you usually go to this coffee shop?
RobRey
October 18th, 2008, 10:32 AM
Angel Intheuk- Yeah, I do go to the same coffee shop all the time. It's a really nice little place and I don't have a car so my options are limited anyway.
Frankie Boy- Thanks. I go to the coffee shop... um,way too often :) No, actually I can never get enough drawing practice, but my wallet does feel the drain of all the tea I buy. On average maybe 2-3 times a week, but there aren't always good models to draw.
Here is some more...
I don't see this guy very often at the coffee shop but I like to draw him every time I get the chance. There is another drawing in this old blog post (http://robreyart.blogspot.com/2007/08/first-page.html) if anyone is interested.

Beautiful... The thing I see is that you like to draw faces fairly long from the nose to the back of the head. Is that on purpose? Im not nearly good enough to offer crits, and to be completely honest, your stuff really does inspire me. Where do you go to find these people? Mall? Or are these people you just draw off the top of your head?

thelegacycreator - Sometimes my proportions do get pretty off, it happens but not usually on purpose. I usually sketch at a local coffee shop.
Last spring I began attending a local portrait painting night, but the group took a long break for the summer. Well, I'm very excited that Monday night portraits has begun again. We had a great model for the first night named Svetta, hopefully we'll have her back again.

Back from Illuxcon and a good time was had by all. I met many cool and extraordinarily talented people, saw a ton of great illustration art and a few painting demonstrations. As long as it happens again next year (and I don't see why it wouldn't) I'll be there.
Here are a few things I drew while participating in a little impromptu sketch group in the hotel bar.

Your painted portraits and coffeeshop sketches are fantastic!
How you can capture so many details from a moving subject in a coffee shop, I have no idea. I've tried doing this many times in coffee shops, and I can never capture much more than the pose before they move.

It was one of those nights, I got off to a bad start. I wasn't getting it down fast enough and the feeling of running out of time was only causing me to make hasty mistakes. I thought for sure it was one for the trash pile.
But then, in the last half hour session, determined not to give up, I slapped down paint to fill in the neglected skin tones, painted over misplaced eye lids, smooshed everything around, and ...I think it came out alright. Despite a few minor issues I'm pretty happy with it.

The second tough portrait night in a row. Sitting on the drawing horses they have at portrait night and crouching forward to work on the panel in front of me strains my neck and has given me a few headaches, but this night it was bad. In the second to last session my hands started shaking and I was afraid I might pass out, but I've got that silly determination not to give up on a painting until the time is up. So I pushed through and finished, though not without laying out on the floor to try to relax my neck in the last break.
Definitely not my best, but, eh, can't win all the time.

Back to model again, I painted Mike the first time that I attended the portrait night group, posted here (http://robreyart.blogspot.com/2008/04/monday-night-long-pose.html). He brought his 16 year old Italian greyhound, Gretta, with him to pose this time. She was sitting in his lap and I had originally wanted to fit her into the painting after I had Mike taken care of, but I decided not to at the last minute. I think it would have crowded the picture a bit too much and I'm happy with this one the way it is.

My girlfriend Angela came and posed for the Monday night group. I think this is the third time I've painted her portrait, but it's always fun, I'm just going to start losing track pretty soon. Apart from her upper lip being a little bit too long it's a pretty good likeness.

I got back from the New York Comic Convention on Sunday night. I really enjoy Comicon. There is so much art to see, art to talk, and the people watching is excellent! There are so many good costumes and I really enjoy the passion with which people wear them. I got a chance to do some quick sketching. Although, with all the action packed lightsaber duels going on, my subjects rarely held a pose for more than a few seconds.

While sketching one night at the coffee shop I felt someone watching me. I glanced up towards the front of the shop and saw a very pretty girl watching me sketch, the kind of pretty that hits you in the face and leaves you momentarily stunned. This was about all I could surmise from my glance as it would have been awkward to hold eye contact for any longer. Moments later she walked out of view and a few of the people I was sitting with voiced something I did not catch in my glance. Jonathan said, "Now that was an attractive girl... with a very unattractive attitude."
Though, before anyone could say much more she returned with a man, holding a large piece of chocolate cake served at the counter. They stood, waiting for a table, all of which were occupied at the moment, and she continued to watch me sketch. They did not talk, the man held the piece of chocolate cake and neither of them took a single bite.
I did not see it while I was sketching, but Jonathan told me later that after about ten minutes someone came and told them that there were available tables on the other side of the shop. Despite their patience, she replied ungraciously, "No, we'll wait."
Another five or ten minutes went by before the gentleman at the table directly ahead of me, along the wall, got up to leave. The girl sat down abruptly in the seat closest to me, the man across from her, setting the cake between them. She did not face the man, but flipped her hair and turned ninety degrees in profile to both him and I. She put her chin out and looked at the far wall, motionless.
I almost had to laugh, just as Jonathan had said, it was quite amazing how profusely she exuded both her good looks and her bad attitude. I considered drawing her, it was tempting. I really would have liked to have a drawing of her to go with this story. She thought that I would not be able to resist her beauty, and in a crowded coffee shop, without asking, I would draw only her. She wanted that satisfaction, but I could not stand to feed her voracious vanity. So, I looked to the side and I began to draw another girl.
Five minutes went by, she didn't move, she didn't talk to the man who sat sighing with the untouched cake between them. Then, she got more impatient, flipped her hair again, huffed, and stuck her chin out even farther, leaning forward from the wall now and into the aisle. I continued to draw the other girl. After another five minutes, she huffed again, turned to the man and said curtly, "This isn't wroking," before standing up and walking off with the man and the untouched piece of cake in tow.
I don't have a drawing of her to show, but here are the three drawings that I did of the other girl...

I love the story. The rare moments when you get to do things that that are so interesting. Love the drawings too. I always find that when I look at something I drew even two or three years ago, I can completley imagine what what was going on, and the entire scene and what I was thinking of, even if the drawing isn't of what was occupying my thoughts at the time. Funny how that works.
Did someone eat the cake? :)

Pixie Trick - I agree, it's amazing how things get burned into memory after the kind of close study that goes on drawing. So much more even than what is drawn.
I don't know if anyone ate the cake, I imagine somebody must have. Even if it was just the guy by himself. I sure hope it wasn't a first date, but if it wasn't, then I suppose the guy probably wasn't really looking for a good conversaionalist anyway.

Great stuff Rob really appreciate all the life drawings and painting your doing! You meet alot of people in that coffee shop? When ever I go out and draw people on the train or somewhere someone usually starts up a conversation with me. Haha hard talking and drawing people at same time! Fun though =)

-Thanks Dylan! I do meet a lot of people at the coffee shop. However, I usually go with a couple of friends and I think the intimidation of talking to a group rather than one person keeps me from meeting as many as I might. Also, the coffee shop I go to is not to far from an art school, so young people drawing there might not seem so uncommon as it might in other places.

ha, don't think I've ever been sketching at a coffee shop with a friend there, probably provides some pretty decent cover that :P. rogerb - Thanks! good luck with the oils!
wookiedabo - I do tend to think like I'm using ink when I sketch in pencil, yet I like to be able to have a variable value to my line instead of only thickness.
I've been curious about my color palette lately and how other people feel about it. I know I like to paint with color, but recently I've been looking more comparatively at my work against other peoples work and I've been surprised just how saturated my palette is. How does anyone else who's reading this feel? Are my colors nice and bright, or a little bit garish?

great work man. I love the colors.

The value on the cheek says that the surface is round, but the brush strokes generate flat surface there.

For this first one I was using a carpenter's pencil. I use graphite sticks sometimes for larger figure drawings so I thought I would try it out in my sketchbook. The last painting is lovely mate, her hair is particularly delicious and I love the drips in the corner on her shoulder. I've been looking at my Charles Dana Gibson (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Dana_Gibson) book lately for some inspiration. Taking it out with me sketching one night, I sat down and drew this first sketch. Then, I sat back and looked at the book for a while with a cup of tea.
708869
When I had finished looking at the book, the guy I had just drawn was still there so I drew him again, this time allowing aspects of Gibson's style to influence me. It's nice to try new things and it's interesting to see the two side by side. Gibson also inspired me to take out my old dip pen and do some drawing in ink, that's coming up in future posts.

Nice sketchbook! I for one like the colours you use, they look 'fresh' and not contaminated, if you get what I mean. I haven't really done alla prima with oils yet, but I can imagine colours running together and getting muddy. You keep it clean, just like the pencils. Sketching in public is a fun thing to do, and you pull it off well.

did you name that painting 4 and twenty?
if you havent yet, you shouldnt... the term is really cliche and overused.... be more creative if you want to go with marijuana kind of idea name it 5 point green
or i dont know... something abstractive instead of the really lame 420 reference
of course who am i to say what you should name your work....

Thanks for your concern Bhrandon, actually the title of this painting (http://www.robreyart.com/images/pie.jpg), "Four and Twenty," is not intended to reference marijuana at all (though I realize that some viewers may think so). It's an excerpt from a nursery ryme titled "Sing a Song of Sixpence (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sing_a_Song_of_Sixpence)."

That stuff is like sweet sugar. I don't know why but the Monday night portrait of that man is godlike. The broad strokes for the highlight on the left side of his face are great. The hues are great. In other news, I will be traveling to Altoona, Pennsylvania this week for Illuxcon (http://www.illuxcon.com) 2009! It's a great fantasy art convention on an intimate scale with many, many big names from the field attending. There may still be tickets if you hurry!
purb36 - Uh, well that's a pretty heavy question. Most everything about a painting contributes to form. I'm certainly not the last word on the subject, but I would say that edges (after value, of course) are perhaps the most important element in creating form, followed closely by temperature or saturation (depending on how you look at it), stroke direction, impasto, etc.
Did I forget anything?
Take a look at Andrew Loomis's book 'Creative Illustration'. I believe most of these concpets are covered in there. Good luck.

Back from Illuxcon (http://www.illuxcon.com) and a very inspiring weekend! Thanks to everyone who made it great.
Now that I'm back I thought it might be a good time to announce that I've set up and Etsy store (http://robreyart.etsy.com) for prints! Take a look.
Here is a recent sketch and the digitally colored version that is available as a print in the store.

In other news, this weekend I will be taking a pilgrimage to Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (http://www.mbam.qc.ca/en/index.html) to see the John William Waterhouse exhibit! (on display there until February 7th) Waterhouse is a major influence on me and I have yet to see any of his paintings in person, so I'm excited. Check out these videos (http://www.mbam.qc.ca/waterhouse/en/video-mariamne-leaving-the-judgement-seat-or-herold.html) of curator, Peter Trippi, speaking about some of the paintings on display.

Travel Sketches...
Here is entertainment industry sculptor, Jordu Schell (http://schellstudio.com), giving a monster sculpting demonstration at IlluXcon (http://www.illuxcon.com).
855986
And this is the guy that modeled for Donato Giancola (http://www.donatoart.com) during his portrait painting demonstration, also at IlluXcon (http://www.illuxcon.com) in Pennsylvania.
855990
Two weeks later, I delightfully happened to run into Donato again in Montreal while visiting the John William Waterhouse exhibit (http://www.mbam.qc.ca/waterhouse/en/) at the Montreal Museum of Fine Art (http://www.mbam.qc.ca/en/index.html)! It was a really excellent display of one of my favorite artists.
Also while in Montreal, it was cold waiting for the museum to open, so I got a cup of tea and sketched the back side of this sculpture of Norman Bethune (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norman_Bethune) from inside a Tim Horton's there.
855991
I didn't know anything about him at the time, but Wikipedia tells me he was a medical innovator and Surgeon-in-Chief of Montreal's Royal Victoria Hospital in the 1930's

Hello!
Portraits in #183 and #184 are well painted. Nice brush strokes.
About your pencil sketches. I think that your line is too mechanical and you are missing the natural freedom of you hand. You are reapiting over and over the same lines.
Hope you undertand what I mean.
Peace and have fun ^^

I received some exciting news the other day when I was notified that my painting 'Grandfather's Brass Bowls' has been accepted to the Oil Painters of America (http://www.oilpaintersofamerica.com) 19th Annual National Juried Exhibition! It will take place at the Legacy Gallery (http://www.legacygallery.com) in Scottsdale, Arizona, from April 30th to may 31st, 2010. This means, of course, that the painting will not be able to take part in my upcoming group show (http://www.bristolartmuseum.org/html/calendar.html) in Bristol, Rhode Island, as originally planned, but don't worry I have plenty others for that show that you will be seeing here shortly.

Dude, wow, wow, your brushwork and colors are so amazing. Iam still trying to figure out how you are able to control your strokes so well, its amazing how you are able to almost mimic photo shop, and I thought that it was impossible, sir you have a masterful approach to brush strokes. Its amazing how your palette is so limited, it seems as if your only using 3 hues when it comes to figure painting, do you mix your black or is it out of the tube. And dont get me started on your pencils, O.O. Well sir thank you for the great artwork, and congrats on your shows, I will be watching your thread alot.

Those still lives are gorgeous. I really like your edge handling. I especially like how you occasionally vary them up with a little smudge of paint. It keeps the paintings really fresh, and it's a joy to look at. Keep it up!

Gerry Creates the Winds
I really didn't intend to deify Gerry as I seem to have ended up doing in this portrait. Suffice to say he visually fits the archetype of the wise old man (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wise_old_man) as described by Carl Jung (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carl_Jung), so the wispy brush stokes seem to place him directly in the realm of cloud-sitters.

Awesome still lifes and colours! I like the lines in your drawings and how they describe hair and drapery! My fav. picture is the "turtle centaur" - saw many centaur ideas with scorpions, horses, lions - but no turtle before. I think you should take a closer look to the head forms during sketching in the coffee shop. Some heads look like they miss a part under the hair (flattened).

Hi, you've really inspired me to go out and do some real life sketches of my own. Amazing work. I loved the story about the vain girl. "you're so vain, you probably think i'm sketching a picture of you."
