This thread is insane! It is a full moon out, right?

I don't know why but I am laughing so much I can barely type. The idea of rubbing an actual fish on a piece of paper sounds like something dreamed up by Monty Python. ;)

I wonder if you can do other animals? Rub some snakes maybe? A rat? A cat?

There will be no mounting of the fish here, Killer Napkins. There are women and children (so share!).

SO! Can you "rub" other animals? Like snakes and stuff? Or is it limited to the rubbing of the fish. Also, how long does each "rubbing" session take?

heh, I'll refrain from any silly comments, hard to think of one that isn't already said...;)

Seriously, I looked up Gyotaku, as this seemed kind of interesting...

I like your second fish better than the first. I'm not sure if you are pressing too hard or using too much paint/ink, but its seems to lose detail in the thickeness of the paint/ink.

What I really liked about much of the gyotaku that I saw was the lost and foundness of it so to speak. Some parts were left to fade to very little to no paint, while others where very detailed as far as scales etc... it was simple and elegant. Reminded me of the sumi type painting.

Its kind of a neat thing to do, like making artistic fossils, therefore immortalizing not only the fish but the artists work... too bad they won't last as long as some fossils :)

... !! When a fish dies in your fish tank, and your little kid (or you) is rather sad about, you could do this before flushing it... then hang it on the wall... problem is, with the way I went through fish I would run out of wall room.. :mumble:

err anyway keep up the fish rubbing, really would be interesting to see how an artist evolves in fish rubbing over time... (just don't lick them... some fish aren't healthy to lick...)

Ok, so rubbings are pretty cool, I did some of ancient Celtic tombs one time. But, fish rubbings are a stretch as concept art.

But thats not why I'm writing:

go to the website. There's 3 different prints, 500 of each for 150$ a pop.

And they're all sold out?!

do the math people, thats 225,000$! minus 5 bucks for some fish and you're talking pure profit.

My rubbing site is going up this week.

What the heck is this thread? April fool's isn't for months. I agree with all the statements as to, this is CONCEPT ART.org. Buying a rubber fish from Dick Blick and slapping it on paper may be nice, but its kind of a stretch. No offense but you aren't the first either, I've seen it many times before, and like I said, I have one of these printing fish I bought from dick blick for like $15 http://www.dickblick.com/zz429/07/products.asp?param=0&ig_id=3590 its fun to play with. As for the difficulty part...I don't know...I think its a little more difficult to do concept art, you aren't given the undead lich king rubber stamp to simply cover and slap on paper.

A.Malec : I was also stupefied by this technique and was even more suprised upon reading this was a famous hobby. It's interesting to see that there is such a market even in the US. Despite being a strech away from conceptual art, it's always nice to know new things that have to do with art. This is what the forums are about and some of us seem to lose track of that.
Anyways, I think I'll do a bit of research on the project now. thx.

Whoah, stop right there. How is it that apparently you don't even know what the term "concept art" signifies, and yet WE'RE the "ignorant asses"?

I'll clue you in: Concept art is conceptual work. This includes illustration, sculpture, character/background/environment/creature design, comics, animation, storyboards, characterized portraits, games and similar venues of design or expression. All of which generally revolve around some sort of conceptual nature.

It does NOT, unfortunately, include arts and crafts like rubbing art, much less fish-rubbing. (Unless say, the fish-rubbing was part of a larger illustration of some sort. I.E. a collage-like page for an illustration with some other art on it.)

Fact is, you're being mocked for your own ignorant mistake, and for collectively insulting everyone here with the self-indignant projecting of your own personal character flaws onto the people who are mocking you.

Unfotunately, until there's a "rubbingart.org" site, your fish-rubbing art will continue to be duly mocked and ridiculed for being so very out of place on a concept art forum. Your horrible attitude in response to people's laughter at this fact will also continue to be subject of ridicule for as long as you continue to perpetuate it.

That said, any mockery you receive here is a result of your own doing. For the same reason I'd expect to see someone posting a thread about country music on a rap site, and then screaming and foaming at the mouth at everyone who laughs at him.

But I digress, for you have already (presumably) fled with your tail between your legs.

What's wrong with replying to an errantly placed post with a polite 'dude, interesting, but wrong forum' or something along that line?

A history of mocking and ridicule do not a good portrait make to the Art Director doing their research before they hire you.

Well no, but it sure is fun.

Besides, I doubt many artists, barring the ones whose work is hosted by conceptart.org reference this site to art directors on their resumes or in their portfolios. Nor do I think art directors who do stumble across spats like these really care all that much, especially considering the mockery was actually fairly well-deserved in this case.

P.S. I'm not one of the people who participated in the mockery (though I likely would have if I'd come across this thread earlier) I'm just explaining why he got mocked in the first place.

I know you weren't. :) It was just more of a general response to the overall direction the thread headed from the beginning.

As for how many artists would reference this site to potential employers, that tends to be irrelevant when you consider how many hiring (art or otherwise) directors are savvy enough, and have no qualms "researching" you online without you having pointed out your usual haunts.

I'm inclined to agree that several people in this thread weren't particularly mature. But a lot of the mockery was simply lightheated jabs, and the criticism was more leveled at a "uh, dude, this really isn't concept art...P.S. I've seen this exact technique done before many times and you're overcharging for something that's not even unique or all that skillfull to begin with" level.

Regardless, the wounding of his pride was self-inflicted for the most part.

It is really annoying to see someone come around with a real smug attitude hawking stuff like that when I am sure there are more out of work artists on this board like myself facing the prospect of dumping pieces of ART that took real serious sweat and work for peanuts just to have some spare cash.

He earned it because he was way out of place, and because of his attitude, which in the face of the aforementioned struggling artists, was offensive.

Besides, I never do this kind of thing... never :evilbat:

Yeah, it's smug, lazy, pretentious and cheapass charlatans like him who don't know the first thing about hard work who are always the first to piss on the real artists slugging it out in the field.

More power to you if you can make a career hawking kitsch arts and crafts, but good god, don't think that this makes you hot shit compared to working illustrators or other professionals. (Or hardworking art students, for that matter.)

honestly, you cant deny that this poorly placed post was just hilarious in itself... just the wording made you chuckle. And being this is NOT A PLACE TO POST FISH RUBBINGS... we, the artists, had to make light of it.

Why would we entertain such a post with respect when he, in his very first sentence came off as quiet arrogant and cocky on a forum he has no place in?

Unless these fish were hand drawn, they shoudnt be posted here.

His attitude sparked the repsonse he got, just because his ego was bruised doesnt mean that it was ok of him to come here in the 1st place acting all high and mighty.

Honestly i think we did a good thing by bringing him back to earth. I mean all he does is make imprints of fish corpses on paper for gods sake. I really dont care what history is behind it or how many he has sold, the artists, all of us, have the ability to achieve so much more and some of us here on CA actually are masters... so why should we dignify a pompus novelty salesman?

The only foul i see in this thread is his cursing and belittling of us, the very people he wanted to stroke his ego, in the first place! ......... since he didnt want us to actually buy his crap anyway, he was just looking for compliments and such.

Maybe he ment to type in fishrubbing.com and accidentally typed conceptart.org... idunno.. maybe he just mashed his hand on the keyboard when he typed that URL, maybe he was just too slow to actually READ the url... who knows why he thought it would fit here... i dont, thats for sure....

From A.Malec's posting checklist:

Pronounce dominant and narcissitic entrance by the usage of my full name in thread topic. Check!
Let forum know that I am an adventurous soul, traveling to the sea at my own peril for art's sake. Check!
Inform forum as to exactly how much I make per litho so I can be praised for my remarkable salesman skills. Check!
Fuel jealousy by claiming rubbing fish gets me chicks. Check!
Remind forum that they should "Remember where you saw this first" while simultaneously informing them that this is an ancient, time-honored technique. Check!
Maintain pompous, egomaniacal attitude when I realize just how out of place my post is. Check!

Umm, I thought he was joking. Didn't anyone else think the same?

Smugness? I didn't see it. He's got a sense of humour is all I can tell. Even his replies seemed humourous. He obviously didn't take it all too seriously.

I say live and let live.

If he was, then it was a pretty awkward joke, and he could at least give us the courtesy of saying "lol PRANKED" or something instead of leaving in a huff.

Smugness? I didn't see it.

Oh, I don't know...maybe:

Naming the thread title after himself, as though he's hot shit that needs to be recognized by name. (Instead of say, titleing the thread "fish prints by me!" or something more related to what he was actually posting.)

"Just remember where you saw it [his work, not fish prints] first"

Rattling off about his great success and concubines on his yacht.

Rambling about the amazing history of the fish-print in condescending ALLCAPS.

Ending several of his posts with a letter "A" (couldn't you, you know...put it in your sig for crying out loud?)

"SAW IT FIRST-UNEMBELISHED RUBBINGS ON BLACK PAPER."

Bumping his thread with a shitload of one-line replies without bothering to quote so we don't know who the hell he's talking to.

And of course, calling everyone "ignorant asses" and then taking his fish prints and running home.

Ok, I must admit I have a big problem with those smudging different colors on a paper, give it a name and call it art. I, myself am with the renascentists... This man here didn't even smudged colors on a paper, but on a fish! And since when a fish is a concept?
Here, I'll take this the seriouse way since I felt as insulted as everyone that ever spended a full day hunching over a drawing:
If A.Malec proves me now he can really draw by posting a good drawing, I will be the first to apologies for my jokes!

A piece of sh*t that looked like a "futuristic" arab? I don't know what you meant by it, but it sure as hell is the most racist thing I've ever heard.

This is not the time [if there ever was a time!] nor the place to make discriminating comments about arabs or non-arbs alike.
