Delmar - many thanks, about the feet, I'm afriad it wasn't a concious decision to make them bigger ... that was just the way the sketch went ... although I do think it gives the character an interesting sense of proportion, almost child like ... any hoo ...
I know how you guys are loving my painting ... so here's a update ... eat up up ... The left arm anatomy is really bad and has been since the sketch, I think I will concentrate on sorting that next week ...

super solid start mister you pencil work is really good and you need to translate that into your colour work, this maybe helpful:
http://idrawgirls.blogspot.com/2008/01/how-to-draw-joker-from-batman-dark.html
and use the opacity control and build the colour up first. I learned loads from doing things in grey scale. It helps to you to understand the saturation and tone , and then it is simpler to add a blend layer for colour which you can change to your taste.
Take it easy for now mister and I look forward to seeing more.

Ashab
November 13th, 2008, 01:46 AM
I think you need to play around with your layers abit more, make your line work layer into a multiply layer and paint in your value on a layer under it and then add the shadow layer top of that and then your light layer goes on top of your line and shadow layers if that makes sense. This keeps things less committed and more easily changed. Hope your well mister take it easy for now and dont you dare stop.

I'm hanging on your every word Ashab ... I really appreciate your advice and the time you take giving it. I'll keep banging away ... Hello mate ... It's not too bad ... I've had a lot of interest and 3 interviews, with another one booked for Friday. I've no time at the no to dabble in the world of drawing and painting as I'm busy trying to get some more animation done.
I'm considering going freelance, there seems to be some demand for it and I quite fancy working from home, as long as I can sound proof my room so I can't hear the screams of the children :)
Hope all is well with you. You're latest post are totally wicked, beautiful work mate. Thanks for dropping by, it's great to hear from you.

After being out of the loop for a few months I am finally settled into a new job ... new but old ... :)
Anyhoo, due to some licensing restrictions I'm unable to use Artrage any more, which has forced me into using Photoshop, in the long term may be for the best, I think I may have been using the lack of control in Artrage to trick myself into thinking that was why I'm not a great painter! So, time to face the truth, and with the kind gift of brushes from Cakeypigdog (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/member.php?u=2778) I've started using Photoshop. This is a WIP and no doubt will take me forever to complete.
Although great to be back in work I miss the inspirational day to day work of some great artists I was lucky enough to share office space with, Cakeypigdog, Mya, OISHIINIKU, ASHAB and Harry_Palmer, all great artists and great inspiration, thanks guys it was a pleasure, I wish you luck in your new ventures.

hey, Bingo,
Sometime ago I has got a good crits from Pencilator:
"The colors and light works really well, but the form is lacking. You nedd to clearify the planes better, this will help your understanding of form and making clearer decisions when it comes drawing. You have the extremes, the box idea and the polished surface, I think you need to find something inbetween. look at Sargents work for example or any other painter. Every brushstroke explains a plane. Wich helps the view to understand what he's seeing. We're not cameras, we have to explain the information to the viewer in a good and understanable way. So that's soemthing to think about while you're painting, how is the form turning, why is the values changing like they do. Promise, this will make you progress like crazy. What ever you do, make sure everything becomes an aware decision."
It was intended for me, but I think it's very good advices and it will help you too.
BTW in last pic idea is very good :):) but I would make breast look more well-rounded and added the eyes with nose without changing geometry of boobies :D (Cause every man likes it round :D)

just thought i'd let ya know that on the posing "muscle guy" the shoulder muscle connects all kindsa wrong to the arm... it should overlap the bicep and looks like an upside down triangle, and not other way around... bad explanation, point hopefully taken, just google bodybuilder and u'll see... oh and also... overarm isnt one big round muscle, biceps in front, wich can be quite round and the the 2 headed triceps wich is more slender and bulks out at the top of the arm.. i know this was some kinda caricature, but when the pic is about guns they should be done properly ;)
-arnold out!

Niceee. I think I'm seeing a theme of tentacles/gore/zombies? :) Sketches are great and have a nice grotesque feeling to them. Just a couple of things to note: anatomy and musculature could use some work. Also, for your colors, it seems like your palette is a little not saturated enough. I'd like to see some sharper colors or even some really dark blacks to make the images even creepier.
Just my two cents. :)

Nice stuff, Tony. One tiny suggestion: why not trying to have a weight scale of your lines? That would help the figures have more dimension in the space.
Great work overall!

Hey, Tony!
A coupla things:
1. I agree with Chupacabra to an extent. I actually think you have nice line quality, and it's clear that you understand how to execute it. When you slow down and go for "finish", the line weight/values seem to book-end from medium dark to dark, though the quick "Suburban Poisoning Scene" has a comparatively much wider range. The Super-sucker Worm has it in its mushy interior creases, but the Unicycle-Mutant has it on a segregated-area basis, and the entire from is basically outlined (though I really like the drawing).
I think you'd be most of the way There if you considered how pushing and pulling your contour lines would aid in focus, eye movement, and whether a form is receding or approaching.
2. I think you'd really benefit from a much freer and looser application of "paint" when you get to the color stuff. You're inventing the light, so everything gets treated like a generic "light/mid/shadow/bounce" Rendering a Primitive exercise.
I made an example image of a super-fast and *incredibly* helpful method to get that looseness/happy accident/idea thing rolling. I don't want to be a jackass and post my thing to your personal sketchbook, so if you'd give me permission to post my example using your Superman/Worm piece, I'll put it up in my sketchbook and make you a link from here. I'd love to show you--I think you'd dig it.
Good work--I can't wait to see more! :)
best,
Nick

It's a very nice drawing of you daughter. But the left side of her cheek is a little more out wide and her hair is kind of covering the rest. But am sure you knew that because you are not happy with the way it come out but come back to it and work on it .Trust me you will have a little more willingness to finish it.

@Dibujio:Guru - You're right, I do see issues with it still and hopefully I will re-visit it and put them right at some point, I did however feel I'd got to a point where I was happy with what I'd done.
@Loathsome - I'm right with you there, it's something I've always done with my other bits and bobs but just failed to do with this one.
