Hey everyone,
I'm just curious. Whats everyone's take on aliens?
Are they responsible for the ancient world?
Are they the gods of our legends and the faeries of our folklore?
Are they real?
What do you think?

I'm sure there is life on other planets, especially when you take into account how vast our universe is. Of course when scientists think of life on other planets they typically are thinking of microscopic bacteria or something. When the average person thinks of alien life they think of walking, talking intelligent life forms

If they're real, then the children are in trouble...

Our own galaxy is vast and full of other worlds, and there are many other galaxies in the universe. Out of the thousands, possibly millions of other planets that inhabit our own galaxy, I think it would be foolish to assume we're the only forms of what we deem 'intelligent life'.
In saying that, I leave you with this

Honestly, I like end of the world stuff better than alien stuff. Not because I think that the world ending soon is more realistic than the existance of life on other planets, but instead just because I wish it would.

I talked to an alien about this once. He said something in a language I couldn't understand, so I just let him go back to cutting my neighbors lawn.

i have heard it said that humanity is a defacto race on many other planets but hey, how should i know. Its a nice thought though.

Are there aliens? Considering the size of the universe, almost definitely. It's very rough, but Drake's equation sums this sort of thing up nicely:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drake_equation
Have they visited us? Doubtful, but not impossible. They would be light-years away after all. Then again, as Arthur C. Clark once said, "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic", so there's no telling what a more advanced civilization could do.

Well I highly doubt we're the most intelligent thing in the universe... But I bet they totally live in the ocean and aren't aliens. There is some town near nova scotia where apparently the people saw UFOs go into the ocean. I bet they ride dolphins all day and live in big bubble houses.

I think they're jerks for trying to destroy our world so many times in those movies.

Are there aliens? If you are talking about lifeforms similar to us, maybe. It's a huge universe. Doubtful that they have been in contact with us, if they are anything like us, they would be grounded by the same laws of physics as we are.
I think the aliens and UFOs that people see are something else...probably beings from a different plane of existence. This is hard to explain, but suppose some of the supernatural beings do have some kind of technology? And if that is so, then they may have had a part in creating some religions and mythology.
And no, I don't think aliens are responsible for advanced civilization in the past. Humans were...they probably achieved a civilization on par to our current technology level and were destroyed. Any technology that we find in the ancient civilizations are what remained of the knowledge and was eventually lost.
Ok, I'll shut up...people must probably think I am a flake already.

Mad Cross, I see entirely where your coming from about beings from an alternate plane of existence.
I think that this in itself is a perfectly good explanation for these beings we commonly call "aliens". Alternately I think it is perfectly possible that they are beings from another planet as well.
I do believe that they had a big hand in the creation of myths and religion and even common folklore. It seems logical to me that our ancestors would come up with legends and myths to explain the unexplainable that they encountered.
I also have to believe that they had some hand in the civilizations of the past, be it in their creation or thier destruction. I don't think that they were as involved in the sense that they built the pyramids but I can believe that the pyramids were built with them in mind. The same goes for the Nazca drawings and the similar drawings found in England among other places around the world.
If I may stretch myself for a moment, I can also believe that there is a spiritual element to the "aliens". This is based mainly from my reading the non-fiction books of Whitley Strieber. (Communion, Transformation, Breakthrough, The Secret School)
I know, this can hardly be taken as solid fact and when it comes down to it it rests on if you believe it or not. I happen to believe that these beings know something about our souls and this could be how and why they influenced religion the way that they did. (Theoretically)
All of these things I have said are just vague outlines of what could possibly be entire discussions.
Regardless of your belief I think it is quite an interesting subject.
Thank you all for your humor and your thoughts

Astronomers have identified a number of Earth-like planets out in the universe already, so I'd say yeah, there are other life forms out in the universe. And that's only assuming that, as Mad Cross stated, grounded on the same laws of physics as we are. We're carbon base life forms because that's what ended up working for us. Who's to say the couldn't be, say, Silicon based?
I don't think they're responsible for the ancient world. If they were, they've done a really good job at hiding the evidence, but I seriously doubt it. I do believe that the idea of them being seen as gods or other supernatural figures has a certain validity to it.
As to whether or not they've made contact recently, I'm sort of on the fence. I don't think we'll make any real, documented contact with sentient extraterrestrial organisms until we reach Type 1 Civilization status (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kardashev_scale), possibly Type 2. I can't for the life of me remember who made this estimate, but the guy mentioned we're about 100 years away from becoming a Type 1 civilization.

We really need to get our butts back to the moon. I want to go to outer space before kick the ol' bucket. :(
