View Full Version : Cartoon Studies and Pokemon

Hi! I'm here to show a piece of myself. I'm a WIP. :^^:
Currently working on basic Preson Blair cartoon studies (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?p=2532308#poststop), mixed with some Pokémon.
Previous work is mostly Pokémon. Yea, I like Pokémon. Not the show, not the games, just some of the critters.

Here's a small overview of the unholy stuff I created before I started this sketchbook.

This was my last drawing before the sketchbook. First some reference studies from official manga/anime, then the WIP.

Final result. The critters don't fit in colorwise though.

Now I'm off to read a book by someone named Loomis. :teeth:

lovin the pokemon sketches... i bashed pokemon for years and then about a month ago got my hands on a gba and seriously havent stopped playing red since... nice work, the sketches of Eevee with the grid lines laid over are really nice, I think that the lighting overall could be more focused though, if you catch my drift...

:D Hehe, watch out when you bash something, you might start to love it! :ilaekae:
Focused... as in there's too much saturation, so the eye keeps wandering? I need to mull it over more.

Interesting subject matter... :)
(I have nothing against Pokémon, I mean, a good few of the critters are great designs...)
One problem with the colors on the Eevees is that they do not reflect anything from the background. Color is always reflective, so if you have a green background and then completely brown/completely gray creatures, they aren't going to fit into that background!
Jasper Flick
September 18th, 2008, 02:40 PM
Thanks dmitri, you nailed it! Stared myself blind on that. I guess it's what I know from the 3D world as radiosity.
I goofed with the underpainting, the color separation started there. Should've taken more time for it.

What's lovable, the Pokémon or the mannikins? :D
Anyway, more mannikins. I'm starting to loosen up a bit.

Now heyyyy, those gesture / loomis drawings are very nice. And I'm not just talking about the context. I'm talking about the clean lines and the care you've taken to go over them once more. That's good!!
Also: "Hi! I'm here to show a piece of myself. I'm a WIP." is quite a nice quote. :P
Try to draw/paint more furred creatures from life if you can (if you have a rabbit or cat or something that's asleep, draw them while they're not bouncing around causing mayhem around the house)! :P

You're right BlightedArt, I don't know much about fur yet. With Pokémon I'm also still figuring out where between realistic and manga rendering my sweet spot is...
Nettle_Mountain I'm still on DA as well. I'm at DA for the fun, I'm at CA for the skills. :)
Quick roughies after visiting Redfrog's sketchbook. Sweet stuff over there! :D

allright, here we go: I want you to design your own monsters, you decide upon your own artistic sensitivities what they are but taking a bit distance from drawing only one subject, herefore pokemon will help you to become better. Design your own "pokemons" and draw them.

Apply what you understood drawing them to draw other subjects? From life stuff, your own creatures design?

Haha, ditto for me. I started with Pokemon, but it was a mix of fursonas, crappy people, and b/w emo stuff that you all shall never see.
Yeah, it's great to check out what other stuff there is out there. I must've changed my style 5 times because of that. xD! Great still life! Maybe eliminate the outlines/sketch?

You have a lot of potential, and I kinda like Pokemon (not as much as I used to nine years ago). After you get good with the studies, maybe you should diversify beyond Pokemon.

October 12th, 2008, 03:52 PM
Shalite: Well I started a long time before Pokémon, but just like you I'm not going to dig that old stuff up, whatever of it still exists.
And I'm done with the shoes, I'll give you a ladybug study instead, ok? :)

I've been a fan of Pokémon for a long time, and it's very exciting to see someone on CA take a shot at it. That being said I would really like to see more studies from you and less Pokémon art.
The more you focus on aspects of nature you focus on, the more dynamic your paintings and drawings will become. After you take a while to study on more of the basics, you will find things that you can add to your paintings.

Time is getting a problem though, so I need to increase my speed and stick to rough drawings for a while.
Today's stuff: doodles fleshed out from random squiggles (like the monster from my previous post), posemaniacs fast and slow, an outdoor color study, and some Pokémon action.

Hey! you really seem to love pokemon :D
why dont you try to design your own pokemons? (or critters like them).
pick a theme and start fleshing out your ideas!
as far as your paintings go, try to balance them out a bit more by making the backgrounds less saturated. at the moment its a bit color-overkill!
(i think the one from oktober 5th is an exemption, you worked a cool background against awarm foreground/monster which looks really good!)
and for your drawings, if you want to make a critter appealing to the eye ty to give it thick, smooth outlines. our brains are very lazy the less it has to interpret the more it will like to look at something, giving a creature thick out lines makes it a lot more cute!
you are making good progress please dont stop working!
Nettle_Mountain
October 21st, 2008, 09:19 AM
Good progress, here's few tips:
Yes, saturate as katzenminze said backrounds closer to grey/black colour than full saturation and try not to block in colours by rubbing with too small brush, instead: Coloupick and bigger brush with pressure sensitivity with opaqueness (and size as well, experiment)
Do you colourpick to blend colours together?, i can explain if you don't know (long story)
more! MORRREEE!

Heza there,
now first off all, I have some bad news, I'm not a manga nor pokemon fan 'cause to my personal opinion they're not realistic enough. Now, besides that, I have to say that you've made some very realistic studies there! Never before have I seen such detailed studies for "just" some pokemon. (Sorry for my perhaps offensive opinion) There is some curious fact though, I'v seen your other Loomis-studies too and you show great potential in drawing much more then what you're doing now, I'd say keep up the good stuff and try perhaps some other branches, see what it gives ^^
Cheers
Jasper Flick
October 21st, 2008, 04:16 PM
Thanks for the tips guys! I'll increase efficiency and keep going.
Katzenminze: Will do some original designs. Don't know about "thick outlines = cute", will have to try that one out. :)
Nettle_Mountain: I know about colorpick-blending and use it. But as you can see so far I've stayed rough and not blended much.
Here's a snag: I work in ArtRage. Almost all images so far have been digital oil paintings (some old stuff is digital velt pen). I don't own Photoshop or Painter. I have GIMP, however I use OS X and have to run it in X11, which doesn't support pen pressure. So with my current setup my brush options are rather limited. I'd like to expand but at the moment I am not going to spend €100+ on a drawing program... Does anyone have tips?
Master Chill: No worries man, fun you checked the thread out anyway. I'll keep expanding. :D
Todays stuff: more poses, a cloud experiment, a second take of the stairs, and a setup for another Halloween drawing.

hey hey.. thanks for stopping by my sketchbook.. One advice for your envies: they always look very "clean" when it comes to hue. Maybe try to use overlay, pin light, lineral light, hard light, color dodge and so one to get different moods. this sometimes creates room for new ideas and designs. I know that e.G Scott Robertson is using this, when he needs to design evironments. also keep up your studie work, you are doing good! greetings to Amsterdam :hatsoff:

Worked some more on the halloween pic. Tried the airbrush again; turns out it works fine if you keep the canvas small. I'm sticking to one hue and saturation, only varying lightness.

I must admit the Eevees drew me in here xD But I am not disappointed. I really like painting style. Reminds me of Monet somewhat (I'm not too painter savvy, there could be a painter out there that would be a better complement =P). Anyways, I like the flow to your gestures and I am particularly impressed by your earlier eevee studies.Makes me wonder what creatures you yourself could create. I still see myself as a newb, so I don't have critique to offer so I will just say that I look forward to more! :)

Love the halloween pics! My only suggestion (post 24) would be to maybe use some illumination behind the silouetted figures (subtly) to help them jump out more and have some spill onto the ground so you can cast shadows from them. The halloween pic in post 39 is fantastic - great mood and atmosphere!
Great to see you experimenting with stuff. Keep up the good work! :)

I've focused on learning Blender and the Unity game development tool, so I didn't have anything to show for a while.
Been reading John K's blog (http://johnkstuff.blogspot.com), which is very interesting if you're into cartoon animation or drawing. Learned a lot! It inspired me to get off my illustrator's ass and whip up a cartoony moogle.

It's good to see that you have a passion for something that motivates you to draw. I think it would be worth your while to use this passion to branch out and improve as an artist. If you have a strong interest in pokemon you can take that interest to create your own creature designs. There is many tutorials and process pics in the Creature of the Week section of these forums. Also look at creature anatomy books, or do more referenced drawings of real animals.

Hey there!
I'm glad to see you're working on taking your talent to the next level. I started out drawing pokemon too. I designed my own pokemon all the time and that's when I branched out to more concept art and character design.
You have a great start here and I see a lot of potential especially with your lines and paintings of environments.
Your finished pieces seem to lack the charm that your paintings have. On the one were pikachu is eating the whole image is skewed a bit. When you're doing your digital work always remember to flip the image every now and then, especially in the beginning stages.
:sungod: keep it up
Jasper Flick
March 22nd, 2009, 05:37 PM
Hey Amianna, you're right about the skewed eating-'chu drawing. I put a slant in there on purpose, but didn't control it well.
You mean you don't like the lineart vs the paintery stuff? I try to get charm in my lineart, but it's harder because there's less wiggle room there. Anyway, here's some new rough paint!

Some experimenting going on here. Combining oil and airbrush in ArtRage. Playing with colors and saturation. Starting to get the hang of layer blend modes.

Yes, it's a study of Pokémon art. I will use this critter for a Halloween drawing. Not impressive, but it heralds a new approach:
1 - sketch with pen and pencil again, no longer 100% digital;
2 - try out GIMP, instead of sticking with Artrage.

ever try going step-by-step in the motion of movement? Adding the inbetweens?
Try it in Flash, can't hurt to see your work in actual movement to tell how you're developing.
I know there's this animator who creates some really cool stuff.
Think the character's name is Bitey. www.biteycastle.com

Nah, I'm not up to animation yet. More dynamic poses will start sneaking in at least, though. Movement comes later, just don't hold your breath!
I've seen Bitey movies before on Newgrounds. It's nice stuff for Flash animations, I guess... but I don't like it. Weren't it for the voice-over in the latest movie, I wouldn't have a clue about the internal state of that creature. Visually, it's emotionless.
Also, I just don't like Flash vector animation in general. Compared to classic toons like 40s Bugs Bunny, it has no soul whatsoever. It just swooshes, dashes, rotates, scales, and flips from static pose to static pose.
But that's just my opinion, and reason why I'll stick to classic cartoons for examples and inspiration.

When I speed up a little more, I'll start going beyond Preston Blair studies again.

There's a book out there with tex avery's work in it. 50 years of tex avery or someting. Might want to search it out.
Good luck an keep at it.
Oh, oh, there's another book,I own this one, draw the looney tunes: the warner bros. character design manual.

Hey, interesting sketchbook you have :) You have some stuff going but I think I can help you out some.
The painting you did on the ladybug was awesome, because I'm sure you used reference. And the more you use reference in the beginning (and later on in your art careear) the better you will get. You base your art on knowledge you know :)
I'd also suggest that you work with grayscale for a while so you get a grasp of tone, that will help you greatly!
Nice spirit you have still, keep that spirit up and it will reward you :) Hope I've helped in some way.

LironGabriel: Thank you, though I can't say I have my own style yet. No hurry, fundamentals first!
Loathsome: :) Yea that's solid advice, I give some like that too myself. I'll focus on toons for a bit, but will get back to life studies and values at some point.

Ah holy crap I forgot to go to the last page :P I just checked the first page. I really like those cartoony studies you have going there. I'd love to see more of those, it really adds a new flavor to this forum where most people do more realistic stuff.
Thanks for visiting my sketchbook as well :)

The colored Lopunny is a workflow test for coloring a scan in ArtRage and getting it online with the correct color profile. As ArtRage ignores color profiles, I used GIMP to convert the image from my personal color profile to sRGB.
