The standard of work here at CAO is amazing; Dallas, El Coro, Darkyes and a lot of others blow my mind.

The seagull needs work...

But I'm floored by beauty and detail of your vehicles, and especially the almost photorealistic wristwatch. Architectural illustration and vehicle design must be your specialty. I'd love to see you do some Syd Mead style sci-fi future paintings.

Velocity Kendall

That is an apalling sea gull! I have a better version of that image somewhere with less cheesy people, the comms bridge and that poor creature given some more feathers. Syd Mead is a king!

Hi Kian- Coventry. a couple of years ago. The two guys I work with have a lot of good car stuff Im digging out. Personally I was never much of a car designer- my friends are now in BMW, Morgan, Nissan, LR, Jag, doing stunning work, etc, but I found it a bit repetitive as often its a lot of facelifting of existing cars and doing 50 possible bootlid configurations.
I prefered working on varied things. The downside there is you get a bit of a jack of all trades master of none thing going on, but its more fun I think. Good luck with your final year, its a toughy but youll love it. (I had a look at your site, theres some nice stuff on there; give cars a go and if you dont like it theres loads of other things to do.)

September 13th, 2008, 10:21 AM
Kian- Had a further look- dude your character work is fantastic, seriously forget cars theyre just products, you should push forward with that stuff its way more fun!

Mugen- Thanks man! Nope its all Photoshop, mores the pity as good marker work does look good. Have a look on Car Design News in the portfolio section for some really nice work which demolishes my stuff.
Id love to be able to show you the things my friends are up to, scarily good.. but hopefully on the road before not too long.

Dallas- Big thanks; you're one of the guys I send to people saying "LOOK at thissss!"
Im a big fan of your supertechnology settings, the sort of stuff that for a long time only Syd Mead seemed to tackle; you know, post-nanotech, post-human and incredibly strange and vibrant.

Well if you buy a new car it would be nice to get a fitting watch with it, only I don't wear watches plus I was more aiming for the fact there are to much watch adds in car magazines ;)

Still waiting for GINA if it ever comes ill buy one.
you should do a totally new car concept who knows, wheels are so stone age these days.

Thanks mate. Coventry eh, the top one :D
Yeah I love characters environments and techstuff. But like you were just talking about movie design there, I'm the exact same. I definitley wanna work on movies. I think the grounding of transport and industrial design courses really help guys like us getting into that area. Stuff like, a fully thought out understanding of what the functions are, and how they combine with the form, yet relative to a story or world. That fascinates me.

I'm having a really good time looking at your works, particularly the automotive material. Here and there I see the odd relatively minor issue but it's all too much fun to want to get all critty and picky.

Wonderful. And also please don't be so heavy upon yourself with regard to the car design. I see a future in it for you if you want it. Auto makers are naturally super fussy these days simply because it that much harder now to be original over and above what has been before. So take heart, this is really impressive work.

My hats off to you.

Mox3d: thankyou! I read in one of your posts youre in the business; Id love to see your stuff.

Dekus: No these are almost all photoshop over biro. Perspective isnt too hard- dont get stressed building a lot of Scott Robertson construction lines if that way of working doesnt suit you: Robertson is immensly skilled and makes it look easy but a lot of car stuff is spoiled by trying to fit into wrongly constructed 2 point perspective.

OK here are some really cool things I like a lot:

Dekus youll know these guys from CDN. Tonnes of neat ideas. One of them worked with a friend of a friend on some yachts and the results are very cool:

I love the Tumbler sports-tank in the new Batman movies. This thing is made of bucky-carbon and diamond fibre laminate and would be torn to pieces if Bruc Wayne drove it! Id like to make a Batmobile like the wierd one-wheeled vehicle at the end of Against a Dark Background, (a bit like the Entity in southpark only even scarier).

Baze no internships yet Im afraid, but it looks from your thread that you're doing fine already, I really liked your Renault Altica style sketches. Stick at it and aim for the OEMs, or do as we did and work in studios for a while and then start your own venture, its a lot of work/stress/fun!

Edit: a year on, one of our developments won a prize, we're all horribly busy, do start your own thing its great! After the first bit he he.

The OEMs would be great if they were hiring:(. Normally we have interviews at our gradshows and this year there isn't a single manufacturer that is coming to our school. Times are rough for this industry (stating the obvious). You guys have a really great style, hopefully we'll meet one day. Maybe at an autoshow where one of us will show casing our newest design!

"bigger fan of your rougher sketches...I sometimes find a very polished piece trades an emotional bond for detail"

I know it. A lot of these had to be detailed so there was no question in clients minds about the surfaces or materials, but youre dead right its easy to overwork something and make it a bit dead.

I think that your designs are very cool. I especially like those watches.

A lot of moodiness comes across in the watch rendering, but at the same time they still are very informational regarding material changes.

These really all show a remarkable sense of craft and a real comfort with a wide variety of subjects and media. It's very professional with a level of solidity to it not often seen. My only criticism was with some minor elements of your first aircraft design, Pinkjet4sm.jpg, but what I first took for an implausible placement of the side windows turned out to be me misinterpreting your use of angled windows. Very interesting- thank you for sharing.

The perspective is weird with some of the aircraft interiors. It makes the nearest table look like it's sloping steeply. I would expect the glasses and silverware to slide into the airplane window. I'd love to see these redone with the perspective tweaked so the nearest table looks normal. Perhaps the problem is following a perspective grid too exactly without taking account what actually looks right to the eye.

Great stuff man! I love concept art but always wished I had taken a few Industrial design classes while in school. Especially after starting to work on vehicles this last year. Cars and automotive design are a true art form. Out of curiosity what do you use to render your 3d stuff? Can't wait to see your future vehicles.

You need to work on your aviation stuff, they are too sterile, and I don't believe that such a small engine could pick up all that bulk.

Great body of work there, the detail in the watched is crazy, but interestingly, what struck me the most was the Pollock interior, where you thread the yellow, black and white through out the piece.
I also see the yellow chair giving a nod to this (http://www.cs.waikato.ac.nz/oldcontent/cbeardon/dcollage/collage2/images/Kosuth/chairs.jpg)

You are a very skilled draftsman.....how do you feel about companies making their final choices in designing a car?....do you feel you have a lot of freedom or do you feel if a design is way too different from the mainstream that a company may fear loss of profit....then you have ask why many car desgins seem to share many line aestheticsshape/contours....???...

anyway...great post
Cheers.

Velocity Kendall

Thanks 3B!
Im not involved in car design any more but yes at individual designer level each person in the team competes to create the look of the new model. The winning design is then moved forward.
Cars in the same class look the very similar same as a result of their identical performance and safety requirments, and because the most successful model will be copied by other companies.
Some new design ideas are very successful, create a new class and make a company a lot of money, for example the Renault Espace or Chrysler Voyager. Others fail and lose a lot of money, for example the Renault Avantime which bankrupted Matra.
I love the Avantime though.
Thanks again!

Hey Mate!
Knives? Yes been making them full time for the last 16 years (for my numerous sins!)
So yes your Sister would be very welcome to swing by. Shall email you over that.

Anti Gravity? Impossible? Probably not actually. In fact it can be done right now but just needs a huge amount of power. A magnetic torus with sufficient power will lift and support a man no problems. Just that with the current state of technology it is a very big heavy piece of equipment. Time money and effort will sort that. Another really interesting tech I was shown a while back was spheres with a perfect vacuum inside. The challenge with them is to create a ultra lightweight housing which won't implode. Once that is sorted things are going to get really interesting as well.

For a chunk of the side work I am currently doing I have been researching a great number of the aircraft that were either on the design boards or actually flying at the end of WW2 hence my fascination with Dieselpunk. Check out Vought XF5U, Vought V-460 & V-485, and also the Bugatti Airplane. Beautiful designs! There are hundreds of others as well.

The Spider Strider is a very neat idea! Like it.

20 years more practice! Oh Wow Man I am looking forwards to seeing all of that. Very cool.

Ok I read your thread on the Crit forums and wanted to see what you had been talking about. I read through this entire thread and am I little confused.

It looks like you are not always posting your own personal works? But you are posting other people's designs and taking credit for them? Which pieces are YOURS? Some of this stuff looks like your taking photos and just slightly altering them? I think most people assume when you post something, everything in the picture was done by you, unless otherwise noted? I mean are you doing this stuff from SCRATCH? If not I wish you would specify exactly what you did.

I don't know... something is just not adding up to me.

Velocity Kendall

"It looks like you are not always posting your own personal works? But you are posting other people's designs and taking credit for them? Which pieces are YOURS?"

Chill out youre so agressive. How can I "claim credit" for something I dont even use my real name. Calm down and stop SHOUTING please.

I just put up work to see what people think and be a part of CAO. Im not trying to gain in any way from other people's work.
When I started this thread I was working at my friend John Bowens studio, J&B. I posted a collection of mine and Johns work thinking people might like to see it. He did the first 8 and the last 2 or 3 images in Post 1 and the first 3 in Post 57.
My friend Jay Sayed currently works at J&B. He asked me to do an interior for his Rolls Royce concept. I posted his exteriors with my interiors so they all made sense.
With one exception I can think of everything else I did from scratch.
I also posted some character sketches my friend Jamal Mustafa had sent me for soemthing we were working on at the time. One of these turned out to be painted over the cover of a fashion book. I didnt realise at the time I posted, but left it in the thread so the Omen Spirit's comment pointing out it was lifted made sense. That was embarassing but I dont think I did anything wrong apart from putting sketch work in the Finished forum...
"Some of this stuff looks like your taking photos and just slightly altering them?"
Which ones?

I use photoreference as much as anyone. I have cut out people from photos to use in images sometimes if the image is a sketch, or used textures off the internet or the ones that came free with my software..
I looked at your thread.
http://www.youtube.com/cuptow555.
I bet you didnt take the original photo of Brandy youre copying from and subsequently signing your name on.
"If not I wish you would specify exactly what you did."
Id much rather talk about what you would do differently in the images, or ideas youve had that might improve future ones, things like that. Or have people voluntarily chop images around and make them awesome, I love that. I know how much I have to learn and am very grateful to the people whove commented on the thread. A lot of the guys here, Coro, Jason, Patrick, Dallas, I really look up to as artists and they actively participate here which is exciting. Thats the reason I wanted to get invovled in this big community of artists, not to argue.

Mouse paintings. After seeing all the awesome TAD work Ive ordered my first Wacom. i say ordered, asked for off my mum for xmas... i cant wait for it to arrive. Mouse is ok but its a bit like drawing with your wrong hand, quite tricky!

Chill out youre so agressive. How can I "claim credit" for something I dont even use my real name. Calm down and stop SHOUTING please.

The problem with anonymous/pseudo anonymous message boards like this is it attracts the sort of people who thrive on contention. I don't know if there's any solution other than to make these places pay sites, which has its own problems. But the benefits of a community like this I think far outweigh the nuisance of people sometimes coming into your thread accusing you of being a PLAGIARIST in all caps.

I'm very glad you've posted these here. It's awesome work and incredibly inspirational. I'm curious how you managed to achieve such atmosphere with those mouse paintings. That first one especially is exceptional.

Ive just spent a happy time slowly scrolling down your blog and zooming in on things. Theyre like Cezannes! so fine. Id love one day to do something like those.
The trick to mouse paintings in the few Ive tried? (and the reason I am in awe of painters who use real materials): Ctrl-Z undo. And layers. Digital spoils you I think. And photo reference. Without that Im stuck. I wouldnt recommend mouse though its a pain hehe.
My first ever wacom is on order.

You flatter me, kendall. But I'm a long way off from Cezanne. : )

That makes me want to try a mouse painting. I imagine that sort of study might help to build confident marks, as there would be no noodling around with an airbrush.

First of all, let me say that you are a great artist, love your sketches, paintings, everything. Next, i want to ask for your permit to model your black taxi on 3d. I model cars (for fun) and yours will be a good practice for me. Of course you will be fully credited.

Thanks in advance, keep up the good work ;)

thanks for checking my sb! weird designs man, i wonder at a lot of images whats the story behind it. It would be interesting if you would add some comments at some of your image so we understand more about how to understand your image.

another question, is it ok for some pieces to show it? i mean, isn't it under NDA?

keep up the good work!

Hello!
I hadnt check this for a while so sorry for not replying!
Also sorry this is effectively the double of the SB now; I was going to take all the sketchier stuff out but it sort of destroys the meaning of a lot of the comments, so from now on this is just going to be for polished bits, SB for junk.
shouldve just done all this properly in the first place mumble mumble

GEB Thanks bud!

CG18: Id be flattered and honoured! Although I apologise in advance that the surfaces dont make much sense and might be a total dick to model...

Schowalye: Thanks! I remember having my head blown off when I first bought Oblagon off Amazon when I was about 16, and his images stil hurt my head today; the perfect perspective, total control of colour, the amazing design ideas, the great anatomy and faces, amazing reflections.. and all in guache. The excellence is intimidating. But also inspiring!

JellevdVegt: No problem, its a really good SB, I am most envious!
I can certainly explain what I was thinking with any of the pics, if you want to pick any and I can explain the rationale? I say explain, I mean make up bullshit stories...;)
Yeah theres loads of stuff under NDA, but youre not missing a massive amount really, mostly sheets and sheets of designs for game assets and things, yawn...

AllthatJazz: hahahawith all the little details are we ocd or what!?

Colin: thankyou very much sir

Bhanu, right back at you homes. I love the rust red bodies, Id expect to see them on the wall in the Saatchi and go fuck, thats cool in my head. Big love

http://im3.ebidst.com/upload_big/4/1/0/1279645311-25170-0.jpg

ive always wanted to draw people but i was afraid. but seeing the amazing work by TAD and CA users in general got a notebook and a wacom pad to do drawing. i wish id drawng in a notebook sooner it is a bit hit and miss but its highly enjoyable
i love the wacom. drawing with ctrl-z is so cool. pen is cool for the opposite reason, no ctrl-z. harder too but better training i think.
if anyone is teetering on the brink thinking learning to draw get one it pushes you and i recommend it; you get a visceral feel for how far there is to go, but also how far youve come.

haha dude your sb is sick, im not the one to comment on the 3D stuff but i can say for sure that you have a great imagination for shapes and design. compositions are lookingnice - with your digi paints, try painting with the round brush, and experiment with varying your edge quality, i think it may teach one or two thngs.

cheers again dude i look forwards to more!

wow those last two posts have been massive! I'm glad youve stated sketching regularly in a notebook, I think it makes all the difference. I have read many quotes from artists saying that your sketchbook should become almost an extension of your own body! It might seem a little far, but thats what I'm trying to do personally, and it really helps. I love your pen drawings, they are filled with personality. Not quite so keen on the wacom ones, because I think that ability to ctrl+z often takes away a lot of "happy mistakes". Anyway, keep it up, youre doing great

the honda vehicle is fantastic!

Coinsdently, I was just looking at damien hirst's new website, and his spot paintings and thinking about how much I don't like the fact that he never made any of them. Then I popped over into your thread, and here they are again!

Very cool man!

The honda motorcycle is fantastic! Loved the futuristic city with orange asphalt.

Seeing the robot with flowers before saw it with two axes and blood over its body made me laugh!
