Start a drawing with a sharp pencil.
1.start by lightly sketching in straight lines which approximate to the shapes of the face - look for edges, of structures, and of areas of light and dark. Think of abstract shapes, not "eyes", "mouth" etc.
2. compare each line to the other lines you have already made, see how the ends of your line relate to the ends of your previous lines.
Ask yourself, with each line you draw:
Is this line too long? or too short? (in relation to other lines)
Is it at the correct angle (too steep? or too shallow?)
Are the spaces between lines correct (for example, how does the height of the upper lip, from the bottom of the nose to the lip-edge, compare with the height from the lip-edge to the chin - is the relationship in the subject matched by the relationship in the drawing).
Spend some time mapping out your placements in this way. Don't start shading until you have them reasonably accurate.
I'm not suggesting getting out a ruler and measuring millimeters - just eyeballing it but thinking in terms of relative distances and angles.
If you are OK to post a photo of yourself, I'll do a quick demo of the approach, if it helps you?

Thanks Dave! Thanks for the advices :)
Im gotta try the method later on :) Btw do you suggest drawing big or small? Thanks again!
dcorc
September 14th, 2008, 07:49 AM
Fairly big is better - half to three-quarters life-size. Small drawings place more demands on you being pinpoint accurate.
Your photo is in very diffuse and frontal lighting - if you lit your subject (yourself, in this case) from one side, 3/4 view, you would give yourself an easier subject to draw, as you would have some good shadows which would help indicate and model the form.

I hope this is what u mean? :o

Yes, those are better - a bit bleached out in the lights, but it would give you some shapes to work with, draw in the shadow-edges. Back shortly...

OK, here's a quick sketch (not great, sorry) that I did from your first photo, to demonstrate what I suggested - shapes, including edges of shadows (and here, halftones) are plotted out as straight-line approximations (same idea as Bargue plates) - I've put in the lines a bit more heavily than I normally would, to make them easy to photograph:
http://img386.imageshack.us/img386/9590/galaxis1ua9.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
A bit of shading to make more sense of things:
http://img386.imageshack.us/img386/5203/galaxis2jx3.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Some smudging with a tissue:
http://img124.imageshack.us/img124/377/galaxis3nc3.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Finishing touches:
http://img386.imageshack.us/img386/2540/galaxis4pa1.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
8B pencil on cold-pressed watercolour paper (first things to hand!) and a putty eraser - about 1 hour drawing time, (plus photography etc).

Hi - OK, looking good. One thing I'd like to emphasise is the very first stage of such a drawing - before you get to any shading..
The idea of starting by straight-line approximations of edges - assess the relative lengths and angles of each line, and the spaces between lines.
Eyeball it first, then measure to check (measurement doesn't have to be complex, just the old - hold the pencil out and mark out top and bottom by the pencil end and your thumbnail), and correct if its wrong. Doing it this way hones your ability to "eyeball" by giving you feedback on the size and nature of any errors.
Oh - and - take your time - don't be in a rush. Don't aim to do the fastest drawing, aim to do the best drawing

Singapore also? Same here. :) First time looking at this thread. Really gotta respect the effort it takes to do these self-portraits.
Something I thought I'd mention, I think your initial construction on many of the drawings are not accurate enough, try to avoid shading and detailing until your proportions in the initial sketch are correct. I would go so far as to say that shading is secondary until you have a workable sketch, further description of form with shading is pointless until your initial drawing reads correctly.
Look at the shape of the head in the last one, the outline or silhouette goes very wrong towards the top left of the picture, i see an obvious bulge coming out of that part of the head. Don't aim for likeness too early into the picture, think of the head as an object and how to draw/construct it as you would any other object, if the drawing is accurate, the likeness will be there.
Anyway, don't mean to be harsh, you're taking on a difficult task, keep up the good effort and you'll see improvement in no time.

Waiting for NS, you? A lot of variation in your pieces, try taking a photo of yourself, import it into photoshop and push up the brightness/contrast. See the lights and shadows simplified? that's what you should be trying to describe, the play of light over shadow that is form, not the outlines of the individual details. Keep going.

Hi Jake! Didn't know you're on CA too :D
I think one of the bad habits you have right now, is to draw a clear outline around the features. Put stress and accentuate parts like the corners of the eyes and mouth. For the other parts, a faint suggestion of a line will more than suffice. Remember that sometimes, less is more.
Your determination and discipline is incredible. Consider me inspired!

October 7th, 2008, 11:01 PM
Getting better! I'm not sure if you do this already, but when you start out, decide the length from the top of your head to your chin, then you can divide that vertical line into the correct proportions. Giving yourself boundaries can help a lot!
I'm not sure about the five eyes width in your case, but in my case, I realized my whole face and nose weren't symmetrical, so if you don't fit the proportions exactly I think that's ok, that's what makes your face unique.

One thing that might help you with eye/nose/mouth placement is to imagine vertical lines coming off the boundaries of your features. You can imagine these lines while looking at yourself, then block the basic boundaries of your mouth, eyes, etc. It makes the whole "mouth edges are directly below center of eyes, etc" easier to judge, compare, and make corrections to.

Hmmm when viewing your SPs I thought you were a girl! Now your features are getting slightly more masculine (Don't know wether that's a good thing, guess it depends on your gender HAHA!)
About that painted one, you can render all the time you want, you could have painted 1 week more on that thing and it wouldn't improve, since the #1 and realy only thing is the structure and proportions! Kind of a 2D- §d- thing:
Structure (3D): Knowledge of the cranial area of the bone-system, you know where all the bulkings and shit have to be and you can simplify the forms to basic geometrc shapes to finally apply tone to create the ilusion of space
porportions (2D), you must see the angles (That's obviously not the case with your side of your face, almost every face has a different angle on the face) and you must observe all the distances correctly

You are in control of that pencil, draw whatever the fuck you want.
I read a comment of android in an SP-thread some years ago that I found utterly inspiring and I think it could somehow help you right now:
Soja my friend,
let me firt tell you how proud i am to see your dedication and experimentation demonstrated within this thread. i can see a progression of growth and maturity from the start to finish. the exploration of mediums and compositions is great to see. Its wonderfull to see you embrace this practice and grow so much within it.
as far as advice i would encourage you to try to look at your face with fresh eyes, draw a portrait without a mirror to the best of you ability and memory , take you time and bring it to a finish, then take that drawing and study it while looking in the mirror, observe every aspect of that portrait that differs from your reflection, the inconstancies between the memory portrait and you reflection will visualy demonstrate to you the features of your face that your immagination has exagerated. study all of the differences. then take a fresh pice of paper and draw another self portrait from the same pose or angle looking into the mirror as accurately as possible. forget what you think you know about your face and stare at yourself like it was a total stranger. draw this stranger as if it were the most important person you have ever met. remover all distractions concentrate and embrace this moment like it was the most precious moment of your life, take all the time you need, you will know when you are finished. after you complete this compare these two drawings together, the diferences will demonstrate the diferences between obeservation and the minds reality. realize that both of these images are you!. there is no wrong or right. do not judge.
it is my hope that this excersize will help you to realize the infinite of imagination and the beauty and perfection of the tangiable world. when you begin to harness the power of these two defferent perspectives you will unlock andother key to the true potential of you art.
best of luck my friend--
andrew

Dude you'll be able to create soft edges in pencil if you train your hand to draw really light values! It's really hard, but once you got it it's a million times better than smudging :)
Not that I'd be able to do it yet o_o
~Faust~
October 15th, 2008, 07:40 PM
I agree, smudging and pencil looks horrible. You better watch out that your drawings aren't skewed so much into the top-right corner. A common thing, happens to everyoe actually. Just keep in mind :) Values getting long, though. But think more global when applying values, one side light, one side shadow and everybody can see where the light comes from. That way, you achieve plasticity.

Algen> yeah its really difficult, but since i use 8b, i will sure be getting dark values, should i change to something lighter? You need to get a hold of a book like "Bridgman's Complete Guide To Drawing From Life" and study the chapter on skulls, heads and features.
It's great that you're drawing every day, but, in order to make progress you need to think about structure.
I hope you are also thinking about, and drawing, basic forms like boxes and cylinders and thinking about viewpoint and perspective.
If you can run lines over conceived forms, you will be on the way to drawing.
~Faust~

Aha! Looking better, however the left eye (our right) is larger than the other eye in the latest one.
Keep going with Bridgeman! You're adding more of the appropriate amount of volume to the back and top of your head, giving a more realistic look.

Hey man, you've made some improvment ! Your last selfportrait is really good, because even if this selfportrait doesn't really looks like your face, this one really looks like a real human. You now, it's the same as doing portrait, your main goal is not that your painting looks like your model, but that it looks like a human, that your painting is alive. Then, when you've achieved this goal, you can more focus on the likeness with the model.
So keep it up man :)

It's just a matter of rendering the details I think. Right now, there's not pupil I can see, and no textured ring around the pupil, and no specular highlight suggesting a wetter surface. Look at Kevin Chen's figure drawings, he covers the eye briefly, but well. :)
Keep it up!

3:16 A.M.? What are you doing at such an hour? O_o
I like the clean shadow-lines but when you make them that straight your face doesn't look soft anymore rather angled. And I think the right side (seen from my position) of the mouth is a little bit too long.
The outlines of the face are much better than before and in general your face looks more realistic! I only think your chin is a little too thin but the rest is fine =)
What did you use to draw this picture? It isn't pencil, is it?

i really like the first self portrait, the shadows are very good! your face looks more and more real and you put the things on their right place (with "things" i mean eyes, nose, hair etc)
but the second one looks so different from the first one; the lines look more unclean and the form of your head does not suits as good as one the first one, i think.
but i'm looking forward for your next portraits =)

The latest one looks much better! Push those planes and values! If you can, try and set up a lightsource that clearly defines the lights and darks of your facial planes. More dramatic landscape lighting is usually when the sun is not directly overhead, but earlier or later, so there are interesting/dramatic shadows. Same thing with your face! :) Try some side lighting!
Sahnchen
November 6th, 2008, 02:32 PM
Yeah, I also like the last one! It's a good 3/4-view of your head; the previous ones I didn't like so much.
I agree Earendil, you should push more on values! Well, it's good to set clear shadows to train where to set them but I think now you can try to make more nuances and more smooth transitions.
Well, you train very very hard... it's very good, I admit it, but you shouldn't overdo it. You also should think about your health. And it's best with 6-8 hours sleep per day ;)
reme
November 7th, 2008, 11:01 AM
Earen> Thanks, i will try to push the values =p
Sahnchen> Thanks, i will try to push the values too but the reason ive not been pushing these values are because im so tired and its so late.. if i do shading it will take me like 10-15mins which is a few moments of sleep time i want xD However, ill try to push them :P And also its really hard to grab 6-8hrs of sleep although i know its really harming my health...However, im always left with 2-3hrs of free time after sch before the clock strikes 1am. So i spent 1hr+ resting, 1hr+ on self portrait and its already late :( and if i dont sleep early i have time to practice extras such as anatomy etc etc etc i start school at 8am(god damn those management who set my timetable :uzi2: ) so im always sleeping for like 4-5hrs =/

Hi notti,
I like that you explore many mediums and ideas. This will certainly keep your work fresh.
I see you are following advice on structure and I see the progress and great improvements. I saw Loomis referenced also. STUDY his guidelines. Memorize them 1st, then apply to your self-portraits. Once you know the key points, then you'll know where to break them in your art.
Keep exploring as you do because you will only get better and better.

Wow! It looks like you've learned a lot already! I like how in the more recent ones you're paying more and more attention to the structure of your face with hatching. Keep doing that, I think you'll find you learn a lot about what your face really looks like and not just what you think. I think as artists we have a tendency to have a lot of preconceived ideas on what things look like. Can't wait for more!

Hey Hey, finally took a look at ur self-portrait thread :) U are improving alot since u start it ! Now is hols for u so update ur sb !! :P
from what i see, it will do u good to do some skull study. The face is the part of the body whose shape depend alot on the skeleton because of the smaller muscle. So to draw a nice face, u need to know the skull well. Bridgeman's stuff is of cos good to get the overall form or check out loomis or vilpuu for more detailed drawings :D

so many SP! impressive. ok, my thoughts on ur work so far, i think you've concentrated on using line to define your face a bit too much now, you've gotten all u can from it in my opinion.
try instead of going for contours, look at the values and the shadows and block those in first by turning ur pencil on its side and loosely blocking in the shadows, you can add detail and define ur drawing once u'r happy with the shape and proportions. hope that helps.
awesome dedication and great progress! keep it up

that latest one is heaps cool, but i'd watch the line variation and weight with the ink, i think with ink rendering and stuffs its important to have definite shadow shapes i guess......keep it up matey!!

WOOOT. This mark another century :D This is my 200th Selfportrait :D Learnt alot and slacked alot too. Gotta do compilation for my 200th self portrait when i get time.
Some things i need to take note of for future:
-Perspective
-Giving my eyes more life
-Learn more about the planes
-Learn more abt the bone structures
-Learn to render hair
-Take more time to do my self portraits
-Capture the likeness

Woo.. the last few are great !!... Seems like ur proportion and handling of the medium is getting so much better. Some thing i found out during my own studies of drawing eyes in 3 quarter view is that the far eye will be narrow in width than the near eye cos the eye is wrapped around a curved surface. If u dont understand my crappy explanation, maybe I can illustrate it next time i see u. Keep it up !!
p.s. do u wear glasses? didnt know that :p

Did u use pen for the first portrait? I think for pen since it is such a tedious medium to shade, maybe u should have drawn it smaller. I like your watercolor though... really need to get u to teach me watercolor.....

i like your idea of making yourself a polaroid camera, seems your portrait takes only minutes from the way i see them. Although you really know what your features are by comparing them to each other. But having them revised would be something I want to see from the next post. I mean, going back back from portrait no.1 and comparing it to portrait no. 2 and so on and so forth. Or comparing it to yourself by looking at the mirror. I guess you shouldn't have that much diffirence.
I was also hoping to see some skull studies. like comparing them side by side if you already have one. the refs skull vs your own representation. :)
the bottom line is i like how you did those portraits. btw don't stop.
