Specimen 471\A: Nectar Spender. Found on the planet Eden orbiting the star Nexus 12.
Necter Spenders are large insectoid life forms that spend their days similar to earth bees. They collect nectar from huge deep blue flower like organism and process it into nectar which it feeds directly to its young.
It achieves this by excreting it out a tube like structure located at the end of its abdomen.

Concept: five limb nectar trunk
It's a nectar producing creature or rather the flowers on it's back are the real producer.
I name the specie the 5 limb nectar trunk.
Final good of it's digestion is nectar, well that part itself doesn't need, it's that orange liquide coming out of its trunk.
------------------------------
The planet it's living on is unnamed, you know it's my little "give him a name problem".
ok I'm done.
cheers, hope you like the creature and forgive my laziness to write a better description and also forgive my bad english.

Concept: The Redbacks
these big guys eat poppies all day long. because of the high concentration of nectar and juices in the flowers, they release the excess nectar through pores on their back. insects are attracted to the aroma and follow the redbacks around and eat away the sticky sweat. all in all, the the red back gets a bath, the bugs get a tasty treat. this also helps with pollination.

Concept: Prometheus Beetle
As the name suggest the prometheus beetle steals from the gods. Its body is incredibly basic, the vital organs are stored in the armored skull with only a few extending into the gelatinous body. The main body, held together by a black exoskeleton, contains a thick nectar. The combination of a black exoskeleton and a body full of thick nectar allows the beetle to 'steal' vast quantities of energy from the Sun's light through absorption. Although this heat and light provides the beetle with almost unlimited energy it must release some of the nectar via its 'tail-spine' or die from overheating. It is the released nectar that allows life on the planet to grow due to the nutrients it contains entering the soil, thus the prometheus beetle takes from the heavens and gives life to the earth.

Concept: Sludgeback
Sludgebacks are mostly herding animals which roam the various plane of their native planet. The females are the ones which are burdened with a large sack which is situated upon the back. For a year, this gluttonous basket acts as a container for the sludgebacks developing offspring. Once the children leave the safety of the sack, the embryoic liquids left over ferment and turn into a sweet nectarous oil. Loaded with nutrients, the sack begins to split, at once providing the newly born offspring with a vital food source and alleviating the mother from the heavy burden.

Concept: The Green Back Hornet
The Green Back Hornet, the largest hornet species, excretes a cloud of nectar to suffocate and immobilize its enemies and/or prey. Once engulfed in the nectar cloud, the nectar then sticks to the prey making it harder to move while also filling the lungs. Its main diet consists of the long haired beetles and most other insects of similar sizes that travel along the jungles in South Africa.

Concept: Rabidus Lacrima
Rabidus Lacrima is a semi aquatic organism that is found in shallow water along sea banks and shorelines. It spends the day in these shallow waters and only to come on land once a year when the moon is full during the mating season in scores of thousands. It is named Lacrima from the Greek word for tear. This name came about because when thousands of these creatures would exit the water for one night during the season, the native indigenous population would wake the next morning they would find the shore and shoreline forests soaked in salt water from the dripping wet creatures. They knew this as “The Day the Ocean Wept”.
It was discovered recently in modern times of the strange benefit of the leathery nectar yolk present in the center of the creature, which it feeds off of itself continuously. It was soon domesticated as a rare and particularly exotic pet. It was fitted with a mask device that worked as an effective water breathing apparatus and a tap for the succulent fluid. It has been prized for being a docile and loyal pet, much like a dog. And for having the benefit of having a particularly delicious fluid that it constantly produces.
The Nectar of the Lacrima is an aggressive mix of deliriants and hallucinogens. Including high concentrations of diphenhydramine and atrophine. A shot glass worth of the nectar is enough for the user to feel a very strong sense of dissorientation, drunken behavior, and a slight increase in euphoria for several hours.
The famous Author Dr. Walter Scott II once described the experience in his memoirs as follows. “I was dragged by my brain into a subdimensional world of rainbow badgers. They promptly stripped me of my clothing and we ran naked through the donut forrest. I was breathing through my eyes and the lamp shade floating next to me would not stop talking about how his wife doesn’t appreciate the time he spends doing double shifts at work.”

Concept: The Lieira
The Lieira is a small flightless bird that feeds mostly on fallen rotten fruit and berries. Once finishing his meal he will roll around in remaining sticky mess to carry the putrid smell on its body, often gathering up seeds that will actually begin to grow on his back. From the fruit the bird produces a nectar that is actually quit sweet and delicious which it feeds to its young and to its mate. Lieira nectar is highly sought after for its anti-aging properties but the bird is very swift and will often blind anyone who attempts to grab it by spitting small amounts of stomach acid out through its beak.

Concept: Nectar Squeezer
This creature's a true wonder of nature, it's huge and slow moving peaceful creature feeds only on grass and flowers, however the its strange body system cannot tolerate the glucose and anything sugary, and the creature then contract and squeeze its body to excrete the nectar from the many holes in the musles between the layers. The red spots on the body appears when the body builds up in the sugar level, also use to attract birds and other insects such as butterflies and bees to feed on the nectar, thus help clean the messy excretion.

Concept: Hornet Queen
This creature lives in a close but other dimension where natural selection has chosen the insects to rule that world. She is the Hornet Queen and a prized and valuable asset here. Her function is to accept the raw nectar inserted into her by the workers of the colony and turn those deposits into 'nectar milk'. Those hornets suckling at her many breasts will be the next generation of fighter Hornets; stronger, more vicious and fearless than other hornets who will be either set to guard the home nests or be dispatched to attack the enemies of the Hornets....the Wasps.
The Queen and her ability to produce the precious 'Nectar Milk' is key to the Hornets survival and territorial advances.

this species are mostly active at night , the creature secretes nectar from his tail , makes a little puddle of sweet smelling nectar which is poisonous . it paralyzes the prey almost instantly depending on the amount of nectar the prey has had .this is not a social species , infact it faces competition within its own breed . its strength and agilty are used mainly for defense against stronger creatures which may overcome the paralysing effect of the nectar or other hunter creatures . if it faces a prey , it does not attack it , rather it waits for it to have the nectar and become helpless.

It dropps nectar to attract the opposite sex. As the mate approaches it does a "all in" but out and discharge it's entire supply of nectar. The result: the mate takes a seat in the empty bowl eats it's fill of nectar and lay the eggs in the cup. Does a quick "comb over" and eaves the eggs to hatch.

Concept: Nectar Spinder
The Nectar Spinder is a variety of insectoid that uses photosynthetic cells to produce some of its energy. The majority of its photosynthetic cells are located in the hair-like structures on the back of its body. When too much sugar is produced by the spinder, it exudes a nectary sap from the gaps in the branch network.
This individual is a young male preparing for mating season. He builds a web which he fills with small shiny globules of nectar, to prove to the female that he can provide for his young. The young will not be able to properly photosynthesize until they are at least 3 days old, so the nectar is essential for their survival. The nectar is brushed from the crown of the leafy ruffle that the spinder uses to photosynthesize. He places it in the web with the shorter limbs in front of his mouth (pedipalps). The female chooses a mate based on the amount of nectar produced and the configuration and cleanliness of the web. The nectar has the added bonus of attracting many smaller insectoids which the male can catch for food as he waits in the web.

You know when you're eating something, and its so good that you can't stop even if you're full? Welcome to a day in the life of the Nectar Junkie. With a sweet tooth so extreme, this small dog sized beast will consume more nectar in one day than its pint-sized stomach can handle.
At a young age, strange and colorful polyps form as dispensers to alleviate the stress on this poor creatures digestive track.
With so much sugar in its blood stream, nectar is refined to a sweetness 100 times more potent than its original form during its short journey through this creatures bowels. Much to the pleasure of the other nectar feeders in the area.:yum:

Smoochies produce nectar from their brain/scrotum and vomit up from their mouth. They are known for making kissypoos on you and most of them time leave a gigantic hickey on your neck full of nectar and you will be loved by bees all day. They really love human beings to play cards with and they usually win at poker. These majestic creatures also enjoy long walks on the beaches and the soulful sounds of the backstreet boys.

Concept: Nectar Spender
Nectar spenders live in the lower branches of trees in various ranforests around the world. Like frogs, they breath though their skin, but only through certain areas on their heads and tails. In order to protect this delicate skin, they excrete a sweet nectar. According to the natives, nectar collected from these creatures can only be drunk by their kings because the taste is so delicious. The skin mentioned above also glows, and when combined with the nectar, attracts bugs which get stuck in the nectar. This provides the nectar spender it's entire diet. It is often found in cohabitation with various strng scented plants in order to attracts even more insects. When a number of bugs have been trapped, it sticks out it's long tounge and licks them off.

This creature is getting blind right after it is born.
It survives by developing its manner of feeding. It dispenses a sweet substance, with a nice smell but also very sticky, all day long.
At night it returns on the same track, guiding its steps with the aid of the nectar traces, which are sucked back into the creature through the enormous glands.
During the whole process it feeds itself with the tiny animals blocked into the nectar.

Well guys, great theme and a good bunch of nice entries, really something to learn from...
I'll try to comment on (almost) all creatures... Some I couldn't think of nothing to say, so, sorry if I left you out!
Stimpy: My favorite one for the week, for sure. I love how the creature while being “alien”, is made up of recognizable parts from insects... Its a delicate balance between what is know and what “isnt”. The bug black exoskeleton and the bee-like hairy legs, are really really nice. Great concept.
Lakai: Its a great drawing, very well executed... But the concept ended up looking too “human” for me. It's not a bad concept, by any means... Just not my personal taste.
Paul Kang: The execution looked a little rushed for me, especially the rear legs. The concept would work very well on a horror movie, i can picture this creature as a giant one, excreting some goo from its pores, while being followed by thousands and thousands of insects. The creature looks very “fluffy” too, what could end up being very disturbing to see insects getting caugh on its fur, moving... I would love to see this one pushed further.
Relic: The breasts idea was very good, but the face looked too much like a pig.
Kfeeras: While the scene is cool, the creature itself doesn't looks very unique, for me... But its good to see a cartoony take on the subject.
Gmblfdz: Another creature that I could picture on an horror movie, i like the wines like sphere on his back. And that neck-arms look curious, I would love to hear from someone who knows animal anatomy if its possible, nice face too. Too bad the execution looked somewhat rushed.
Fury03: I think the creature ended up being somewhat “borderline” on the concept, because the nectar could be better replaced for “poison”. Anyway, my main crit on the piece is the wings, the creature looks very fat and the wings don't look powerful enough to keep it in the air.
Rabid: I loved the execution of this piece, I even watched the time-lapse video on youtube. But, conceptwise I think the creature design ended up very messy, while reading the description helped me to understand it a little better, I think it still looks too much like a bio-mechanic creature, unfortunatly. I think it could've been way better without the mask on the face (or with a higher contrast between the metal parts and the creature, I took a while to figure what was creature and what as “mask”). Anyway... I love how you put lots of marine references on it, an inspiration.
Rizza: I like the “what?” expression on the face of the creature. But I couldn't find any real reason for the “plants” growing on its back, it could produce the nectar just from the rotten fruits without the “seeds” part. And since the creature is somewhat small (small enough for humans to try to catch it) I can't understand how fruit trees could grow in its back... Anyway, I love the expression!
Njoo: I love the way you render it, and the flower-like ass. Without any doubt one of the best descriptions on this COW, and a very elegant way of making the creature work. If Stimy hadn't showed up, this one would get my vote.
Brewin: Good idea about the spraying, a creature that “feeds” the plants, like we water them. Too bad the creature ended up looking too much like an ant for me.
Peg: Another great idea. A creature using nectar as a “set trap”, but the drawing don't allow us too see much of the creature, and while its way of hunting is very interesting, how can it afford to lay blobs of nectar in an arid desert? Would it had enough food/energy to produce this so easily?
Gaczar: Bees sucking on tits is a very disturbing scene, but I think the creature ended up looking more like an character than a creature.
t_rAt: Very colorfull and surreal, but I really can't understand how the creature would work with such small feet and wings. Anyway, very funny creature, and great execution.
Lander: I love how it looks like the creature wings are in its feet, i've always played around with this concept of creature flying with their heads “pointing down” But the head of the creature ended up looking rushed.
Meganite: While i can't understand how it would work, I love the “double legs” of it and the green tubes coming out of its head, nice description too, but the body and face of the creature ended up looking rushed, for me.
Scorge: Great creature, very surrealistic and alien. I love the “twisted” feet . Great concept and great execution. Without any doubt a strong design!
Revolverz: I actually had the idea of making an blind creature that would follow its own nectar... Good to see that i wasn't the only one! Good design.

T Rat and Scorge were close seconds for me, they had interseting bodies but I was kind of nullified at the use of every color in the wheel. Although I have to say to use a rainbow creature Necter Spender does seem to be a creature fit for this. But my vote goes to Njooo, I like the overall balance and the symbiotic relationship with the birds is just a great add on. The color is still there but it doesn't take away from the creature...
Thanks for the comments Carbono! I have to say the mechanical portion of it came alot from the fact that I didn't want to think "Flower" which seems to be the first thing that usually comes to mind but still leave the domesticated idea open since nectar is often sought after. I wanted to take a different environment for it but because of this "off the beaten path" the functional aspects needed to be altered too much in the end.

Thanks Carbono for the comments! I did feel a little rushed on this one, I was trying to fit it in between school assignments... I failed to turn in one assignment on time, so sadly for me it looks like I won't be doing this competition next week! x_x
My choice was t rat. I love the colors and the facial expression... so much like a cow! The wings don't look like they could support its weight, but I think that's some of the charm of it. Very storybook look and a great execution. The pic tells everything, you don't even need a description!
Those who came VERY close were:
Stimpy: wonderful design. I loved the painting style you used, the light looks very realistic. The curve of the carapace reminds me a bit of Alien. Nice detail on the wings.
Rabid: I really like the form of the creature. Very strange and alien, but cute somehow. Great concept for the human relationship there.
Njoo: Beautifully rendered, great concept, but I just get too weirded out by the idea of a hummingbird drinking from his butt XD
Thanks everyone for a great competition! I hope to be able to play again sometime =)

Anyway, thanks for the votes guys. I actually wanted to thank you all for helping me to get to the point that I'm at. Of course my designs will improve as time goes on, but in the mean time, I really appreciate all the help and great advice. Nuff said about that.
Voted T_rat. Love the colors, expression is priceless and the whole scene makes me laugh and stare. Great job.
Close seconds would be Njoo for flawless execution and simplistic beauty and Rabid for originality. (You guys are also making me rethink drawing backgrounds/environments.)

Thanks to all for comments.
Carbono, small attraction on this planet (or satellite) make possible for my creature to do without big limbs =)
Stimpy: Very professional work. Impressive design and rendering. However, essence greater is similar not to the nectar spender, but to the collector of nectar. Like bee. If topic was "Nectar Collector" , I would vote for Stimpy.
I hesitated between njoo and scorge. Both have very interesting and uncommon creatures and strong execution.
I vote for scorge, in my opinion his beast more strange =)

Okay, going to try to review the lot quick (a couple of people did it for one of the entries I was in and I really appreciated it):
Stimpy: I quite like the pic, but there are an awful lot of legs squished in there for no apparent reason, and his wings don't look to have much room... But the pic itself is great.
Lakai: Why does it have 3 arms? If it stays put then why does it need any limbs? Again, biological nitpicking, sorry. The skin texture's done great and the bees are cute.
Paul Kang: Hee, fuzzy elephant. Looks sort of more like a spirit than something solid though, and a little eerie due to the eyes. If the concept was for an elemental (almost put elephental, oops) field protector this would be great.
Relic: Grape tapir! Grapir? His face looks quite humanoid though, and the background strikes me as very flat (may be because I don't look at things in that art style often though).
Kfeeras: Hee, cartoon cyclops blob. Made me smile.
MoHog: Interesting name and concept, but his legs look out of place... The black parts are well done though.
gmblfdz: This was almost my choice, I'm not sure why it needs 6 limbs but the general idea behind the point of the nectar seems credible. That nectar sack is quite precariously balanced though.
fury03: Nice action post, but I find the wings unconvincing for lifting the body mass, and the body segments are wrong for a hornet (maybe you meant a false or otherworldly hornet, but your description suggests otherwise). Nice face though, and an art style that sticks out of the crowd.
Rabid: My vote winner. I think it looks adorable, and I like the touch of the quote added into the description.
Rizza: Nice pic, cute little bird and good concept. My nitpicking asks why the wings have gone completely and what fruits can grow on the bird's back though not INTO it (and get big enough to produce fruit), but generally this is a nice little piece.
njoo: Ha, weird. If only we had odourless stomach acid/bile/digestion-aiding-bacteria? I don't need to say much for yours though, you already know you produce winning material!
brewin: I like ants, and they're definitely a good template for this topic, but still... Why's it spraying from its pincers? What's all the air in with its nectar? Why aren't there any other ants? Where are its antennae? I'd definitely like to see more from you, because I like artist variety, but I don't think your original drawing detail matches up to the effort put into the colour/shading.
Peg: Ants and scorpions only? The background's simplicity is nice, but I think the creature could have done with a bit more detail. How long is it? I can't tell how much is hidden behind it... And sorry to be dumb, but how does it eat? I see no sign of pincers, and even spiders with sticky webs come prepared for a bit of a fight... The pose is good though, gives an action feeling to the piece.
Gaczar: Hee, boobs. Well drawn boobs. But why does her face look like a mask of the Creature of the Black Lagoon?
t rAt: CUTE FACE!!! A description would have been nice, and the wings are tiny, the grass is sloppy, but it's adorable.
vibhas_virwani: A thing about mammal predators is that they tend to be very smelly, distinctively, which is maybe why this one is hard to believe? Along with the glowing, it coming from the tail, and I'm not sure it'd take a species long for "don't drink the pools of nectar" to sink in either... And what's with the shoulder spikes? These concept things aside though, it's nice texture, good lighting and background that add to it look like a threatening predator, the only entry to do so in this COW competition.
Lander: Very different, but at the same time nothing much in the creature design appeals to me... Sorry. It is a good pic though.
meganite: I like your spider-like "insectoid" and how you got nectar involved in the concept. The legs seem awkward however, though I get that without them like that it'd appear to be just a spider.
Xabian: The picture looks a little rushed and confuses me... Is he supposed to look like he's on a bar of nectar? More distinct joints would have made this more appealing to me. You clearly have an understanding of texture/lighting (better than mine for a start), it just looks like you rushed it.
scorge: Sorry, but though I've liked a lot of your past entries I'm really not so keen on this one. Maybe it's the goblin-head that does it, and quite why sugar = flower butt I'm not sure. You already know it's a good picture in terms of colour/texture though.
weiglo: Amusing attitude for a description, but I think the picture could have done with a little more effort, it's quite hard to make out what's what.
Pixie Trick: I like the angler bushbaby concept, but the glowing tail seems like a bad idea and I think you could have done a better image. Still, I'd like a pet one!
RevoLverZ: Awesomely weird creature design, but the concept for its hunting seems unlikely. Why wouldn't something else come to pick out the easy prey? Still, he looks great, it'll be nice to see more from you!

I must thank ()nion, Stimpy, and Texahol for voting my piece. I wanted to vote like 4 or 5 creatures but seems that we can vote only one.
Because Lakai didn`t get any votes , I voted for him. Even if the concept isn`t very surprising, the final image is very nice, the anatomy colours lights and shadows.
HareTrinity thank you for the comment. At the beginning I wanted to use that idea.
The animal could be stronger and bigger and it could catch the small animals that got stuck in the nectar And the bigger animals that come for free food. :)
But that wasn`t so believeable.. :)
Aand sorry for my bad english.

I must thank ()nion, Stimpy, and Texahol for voting my piece.
No problem, I like the concept. I had a similar idea about how to have the creature eat. I was going to have it roll in a ball of it's own nectar, leaving the trail behind it. Didn't get around to doing it though.

Thanks for the compliments everyone, although I never intended for the creature to carry giant trees on his back, I ment that small things like berry bushes w.e. would begin to grow on his body since they were caught in the sticky fur, probably should've expanded upon the idea and said they would fall off later or something. One of the reasons why there were just twig with some flowers and leaves on his back. I'll post some stuff later, have to run to class.

Hi,
my vote goes to Lakai.
I think Lakai's conceptart is the best of all.
I like the third arm of his creature. Furthermore the colors he has used are really harmonic. The anatomy is felicitous, too.
His concept from a creature which producing nectar by flowers which get supplied by bees is very nice, i think.
I hope he gets still some votes to win this voting :)
Best regards

Thanks for the votes, Bakubaku and Gyroban =)
HareTrinity: Yeah... I was looking at mine and I was like "man, that turned out just to be like a spider"... next time I will try to be more inventive. And the reason I added the extra legs is because I had the idea that it could grasp a stem with its back legs and hold its front legs out to catch passing insects. I kinda wish I had illustrated that pose, because it would have been more interesting. But I realized for it to hold on to a stem with just 2 claws doesn't make much sense, so I added more.
Thanks for the feedback!

Njoo, I don't know how you do it but all your work looks lush!. +1 Vote
I can feel the texture of that things skin with my eyes, have you ever touched an elephants skin? I recon your creature would feel like that, supprisingly supple for it's inital rough look.... very satisfying to look at, heh.

Scorge's work is an enthralling display of colour, ingenuity, and downright beauty. I find my self coming back to his creature time and time again when I feel like a bit of stunning eye-candy. For those reasons, Scorge received my vote for this week's Creature of the Week.
