Hi. I just drew a picture from a photo reference, but I am stuck right now. I cant start shading since I dont know where to start. Please tell me any anatomic problems or how I should change some places in the image. I never took art classes before so anything you say would be very helpful. I have to finish this drawing in 3 weeks time, it will a be a birthday present for my girlfriend. Please help me :)

well the first problem is the photo reference.. in order to do some really effective shading there has to be a good light/shadow pattern.. in this case, id make everything around the face and clothes the darkest tone.. proportions and everything are decent enough, its too hard to point out everything in just words.. if you're working on a paper with some tones, its good.. id start with the high lights... take a white pencil and find all the brightest parts... Your noses and her cheeks are going to be the brightest parts of the picture.. im assuming this is going to be monochromatic? second brightest will be your foreheads and chins, and your cheeks.. after that everything will be about going from darkest to lightest and everything in between.. That should be enough to start you.. post the next part after you've worked on it some..

If you're working in pencil, you need to be very patient and start very light. In order to achieve darker values, you simply add more and more light layers, slowly building up the drawing. If you try to go too dark too quickly, your drawing will lack depth. You gave yourself three weeks to do this, so take your time.

Also, work the whole drawing at once. Don't try to completely finish the eyes, then finish the nose, then finish the mouth. Build up the entire drawing step by step, so that as you discover things about how to control the pencil, you do it to the whole drawing. This way, your drawing will stay uniform.

All I can tell you about the teeth and black hair is just to look at the posts made by other artists here on the forum.
