Here a few ink drawings I've done over the last few months.

I've been heavily influenced by several artists lately, mainly Franklin Booth, Audrey Beardsley and Joseph Clement Coll. I really recommend all three of them. I'm still learning and plan on doing plenty of studies from the three of them.

Anyways, thanks for looking. Oh, and let me know if I should make the first one smaller, if it's to crazy large or what such.

Wow. You cram a lot of detail into a page. Very nice.

Out of curiosity, how long did these take you? I really like the first one.

wow holy shit how big is the paper you use? and is the first one a tree?

HugeHarHar
September 7th, 2008, 11:45 PM
chriskot- thanks man. Each of them takes an average of a week or so, depending on how focused I am.
Bigpapraels- the bottom two are 10x16 canvas's and the top one is about the same size. I tried not to impose any actually representation in the top one, so it can hopefully be seen in different ways.

thanks for sharing the link, special K. Folks, this stuff looks awesome... 'specially in person with the HHHimself. I tend to like the ones that are more subjective and less abstract, but they're all really great, and highly detailed. the study / observation of Coll and others is helping ya out bigtime kenneth... keep GO ing, keep GOing

Underneath it all the mexican grime, a bright aqua blue layer from time immemorial

special K (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=464908&stc=1&d=1221528593)>>> gotta hand it to ya that that's a really solid likeness. definitely i think you did a great job too at getting these from 65Lb sketchbook paper into the whole jpg format. boxes straight. levels adjusted. it's a hassle kind of to have good scan-craftsmanship, but worth the effort i'd contend. cheers on the progress man... can't wait for the big show down in macon! take 2 on big prints at some point this week.

catch up with ya tuesday :)

i really enjoy what you are doing with the ink and ink wash. do you have a certain process that you approach each work with? Also, with some of the more recent posts, are/were you creating a comic of some sort?

thanks

Jigglesmanure- Thanks dudlez. I appreciate the prints.
th-E- Most of my drawings I set up loosely based of photos of mine in pencils, and I use rapidiographs for all the inking. I love me some of them. And yes the last ones are all from a graphics novel I've been working on for awhile.

And here's some more.

Sorry I've been missing for awhile.

Just finished the first of many huge ass drawings that I'm going to be selling.

Each one $120.

December 1st, 2008, 09:09 PM
Still enjoyin' the diversity of ink approaches and that supersize drawing is superbadass but $120 seems a bit low for something that inkredibly intense - a big ass visual field of penmanship. How large is the drawing? How long did it take?

special K>>> bumpity bumpity ... yeah the "GO" stuff is looking awesome ... of the stuff i've seen by you lately the huge wallpaper sheets of black scribbles on white are particularly awesome. i know it's typical of the ca mentality to hate on that stuff but they remind me of the things i like about seeing a jackson pollock in person. Ahhhh.... noise! so those are $120? not a bad deal! if you want a scan or print of one i'd be thrilled...just hook a jigglemanure up.

Jiggs- Unfortunately the large scale scribble drawing was taken down, it's currently in two pieces. One put up on Thomas' wall, and the other balled up in mine. I really need to get it patched up and put on my wall.

Man...As I was finishing up these pages the book's binding fell apart. Though this will make it easier to edit, redo the pages that suck, and drop the ones not needed. Still, showing someone a book with all of this in it and a big floppy mess of pages sucks. I need to find somewhere to get it rebound.

tandy1000- thanks again for the comment. I hope you stick to your 1/day schedule.

guggemmaneuver
April 15th, 2009, 03:07 PM
ahhh... nice! hope you didn't spend too much money at kinkos... hehe... it can get pricey there.

anyways, the last page definitely feels like a high point...really nice and psychedelic work you've got going there.

i know it's gonna sound a little nitpicky... but... you should try to get an economic and smooth treatment on the faces there... get the drawing right and ink them more... poetically / lyrically ... the jagged outlining style works great for character-brimming grinny-grimey dude-mugs, but for a kiss? maybe not so much. think of the really sick and smooth medical illustration linework that is so efficient yet so simple at depicting 3d forms... that kind of thing. anyways, just some thoughts, really beautiful work, in general. .. glad to see you are cranking out the fuckin go again.

cheers

HugeHarHar
April 16th, 2009, 08:48 PM
friendlywriggles- yeah it was a bit pricey, but I really had a hankering to get a few prints, I'm sure I could of found cheaper and more efficient manners to go about it, but since when have I been efficient?

I plan on redrawing several pages as is, I'll do a redo on the kiss image with your advice, see how it goes. Anything else, go ahead and holler at me. I want this shit to look extra spicey, you know.

HHH really cool stuff going on. enjoying the pencil studies o' faces, especially the various expressions and line weights. the graphic novel is looking awesome though i do wonder about the limited usage of dark blacks for added contrast, especially if the book is to be printed. the last expression on the last panel is very strong and inspiring!

HugeHarHar
April 21st, 2009, 11:05 PM
th-E --thanks for the comment. As I said, I'm really digging the art cards you did, looking forward to more of them. As for the dark blacks in the graphic novel, that's something I'm still working on. I've been really hesitant to go dark dark so far, but I'm reworking a lot of pages, and trying new things.

And now Arts!

First some WIPS and last some more studies. I'm thinking about starting to do some celeb portraits and such. I want to start getting work ready for a website, and I'm trying to figure out what would get the best attention.

Ok, so it might mean I spend to much time on the internet...still...

Tandy- You're right. I really should spend some time researching what's hot right now, and kind of apply my work to that direction. I guess it just calls for more work!

Kelly- thanks again for the comment, and as I said on your thread the wall is actually done in sharpies. I think it was much easier that way.

And to celebrate 1000 posts I'm putting up several pages I recently finished.

If you apply that hefty reserve of patience you've got to learning how to better render three-dimensional form I think you could take your abstract stuff (and all of it, really) to a whole new level. I bet you would have a lot of fun with penciling texture. Really interesting work, keep it up.

HugeHarHar
April 27th, 2009, 10:36 AM
Wilbur- Thanks. You're right, I really need to spend some time with form. I'm pretty weak with a lot of foundation skills. I kind of found a niche and ran with it.

Well, while I'm figuring that out, I have three more pages.

HugeHarHar
April 30th, 2009, 11:29 PM
Just a few more pages from the ol' book of mine.

I've been doing some more face studies, I'll post them up soon, but figured I'd get these up first.

If anyone has any crits throw em' at me. Wilbur down there mentioned my need to work on 3d rendering, and I've got a few things I'm doing concerning that, and if there's anything else I'd love to know.

Thanks!

Hey man, lots of your bigger one panel pages are great. Lots of great angles being shown. Keep experimenting with your layouts and it will get better.

You have a pretty limited value range in a lot of these shots. Is this intentional? The stuff that has a full range of value really pops then there are images that rely just on contour and no shades of black. I think this is effective but you may need more consistency.

Another suggestion would be to much your lineart a lot more rich in terms of black. You could do this digitally or ink over your originals with a darker ink. That can be a chore though...

I really want to know more about what you are putting together here.

Nam
May 1st, 2009, 09:56 PM
I like a lot of the detailed experiments on the first page and the feeling of freedom conveyed in the comic, especially with the man falling. I'd also like to know more about your project. As for crits, I think it would be interesting for you to try some 'tones' on your comics (like they use in mangas) or just more solid darker washes for contrast (like Matsign said). I would also pick and choose where you use detail a little better, in some places the skin flecks or facial hair markings are distracting. Also, The guys iris/pupils are off kilter in the first image panel of the last post.

Keep it up and welcome to the group.

HugeHarHar
May 2nd, 2009, 03:24 PM
Matsign- You're right about the need for more consistency with the different values. For the most part the images that relay on the contours and lines were done intentionally, but I think as I started working values into other pieces, I should of decided on one way or the other, or at least had a better balance between the two.

The idea behind this is basically a very loose journal/biography kind of thing about a year I spent living by the beach. I never really had a set plan for it, just kind of added and edited it as I went. I've been posting these as I finish them, and way out of order, which I think has definitely made it harder to make any sense out of.

Nam- The main crit I've received on this has been about adding darker values, and the images I've been finishing lately, I've been trying to take that into account. I'm not sure how dark I want to take it, but I do need to work on it. Eyeball noted and I'll fix that up tonight. I havn't thought of using tones, but it would make much cleaner values. I don't know to much about them, so I'll have to do some reading up.

These comments made me think that it is time to try something new with these, so here's a little experiment I did trying out some coloring. Any suggestions? Should I color up some of the other panels, or keep them black and white?

batcustard- !!!Thanks! Both Manu is malin and Tekkonkinkreet freaking rock. I'm still learning though. You ruled out all the usual reasons I post for, what motivation is left?

I only double posted those face studies, my energy levels have dropped significantly recently. I think its the allergy meds I've been taking, they seem to knock me the fuck out. Anyways, just a few new random pages I finished.

I tried darkening up one of the pages, though I think if anyone thinks it looks right, I'd rather go back and do the darkening with the inks instead of photoshop. Let's just call it a test.

DStraX- thanks! I appreciate the links, and I do plan on spending some time checking them out. My anatomy is definitely one of my weak points, I've always been to lazy to sit down and figure it out.

I just got word that a friend of mine and myself have a space next "first friday" to do a show. Every first friday of each month downtown Macon throws a big party, and there's a building called the Arts Exchange where members all have studios and each person has a room for themselves for a show. Marcos being a super socialite got in and convinced them to let me be part of it to.

SOOOO all of that means I'm going to be switching up what I'm working on for this month. I'm going to back out of my graphic novel and work more on some fine arts stuff.

But before all that, I do have two new pages! And as I was fixing these up in photoshop I noticed some glaring mistakes in them....UUUHHHH!!! I'll get around to editing them at some point.

Man, I am spending quite some time looking at your work. I really like it and I love the fact that you have your own thing going on. Your sense of composition is happening. Thomas Veil- Thanks! I plan on coloring in some of the figurative work soon.
tandy1000- The story behind it? Basically I spent so much time doing giant scribble walls where I just filled in the entire area, I stopped and wanted to see if I could make some interesting shapes using the same idea. I really REALLY got into using the rapidiograph pens I bought, especially the really small tips.
Edward Cherniga- Figure studies time! Colors are on the way. Thanks!
CrazedQuetzal- Yeah I figure it's time to spend some serious effort into figurative work again. I've spent so long just scribbling away, I've got a few studies. More on the way!

Hey, nice work here. I had a chance to look around more in depth today, and you've got some really amazing stuff in here. I absolutely love how expressive your linework is, and the ink washes you're using in your graphic novel really add to the mood.

What sort of under drawing are you doing? Are you penciling anything in first, or just going straight for the ink? My only real crit is that some of your drawings seem a bit uneven, especially the faces.

This one seems to be really cross-eyed:

http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=647098&stc=1&d=1239774578

And this one seems to be missing the side of his face

http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=645686&stc=1&d=1239653450

One of the things that I started doing recently is holding my drawings up to a mirror before I start inking, it helps me see any problems like that a lot easier. However, I don't think you should spend too much more time on the pre-inking stages, as those lines have a ton of energy and I'd hate for you to lose that energy.

Honestly, you seem to have your own thing going, so take this advice how you will. That's really the only thing that stood out to me, though.

One more thing, the bottom right panel in this image is fantastic:

gmc9987- I really appreciate the crits. I've known about the cross-eyed fellow for awhile, but have put off fixing it for a long time. The other one I've never noticed before, but now that you pointed it out I really see it. The amount of pre-inking I did varied from spot to spot. There's a few that I just sped through the pencils so I could get to the inking, and most of those are the ones I'll be re-drawing.
Grief- Thanks! I'm about to start school and work again, but I plan on continuing to spam the hell out of this thread.

I'm trying out some more coloring on one of the older panels. This is just a WIP. Any ideas?

GHill- Those detailed drawings are the most fun I have.
destinyapocalypse- SQWUEEEEE! heh, thanks for stopping by.

I went to the Renaissance Festival today for Mother's Day. My step brother is big into dressing up and such. I've always considered myself to be a pretty open person, and I have a fair amount of odd social quirks, but this was to much for me. I think I might of been able to make it through if I was under some sort of substance abuse.

I did get one sketch in, I wanted to do more, but having jesters and squires and pixies all shouting out LORDS AND LADIES!!! HOOOTIE DOOOTIES!!!! WEDELDIOLIOLIOLIO!!!!

Sorry. Anyways, art. And an update on the color WIP. I'm getting to the point with this project where I'm getting disgusted with the art. I really skimped on a lot of the drawings and it really bugs me now.

Rist
May 13th, 2009, 06:50 AM
I like your style. But I also agree with some that if you improve on your core foundation skills then this style might be enhanced; and who knows you might learn a new style along the way which you like better.

HugeHarHar
May 13th, 2009, 10:03 AM
Rist- It's funny that in the constant move forward you have to start back at the beginning over and over.

My schedule has changed recently, I'm employed again, so my body is kind of going crazy getting used to waking up early again. I have been working on art, mostly stuff for my show. Here's one of the WIPs. Its a collab between the guy who got me the show and myself. Not sure exactly where I want to take this, but it's been fun.

Hootie Doooties indeed my friend. Man, I love #81 & 84 because that color is breathtaking and the other one looks like you are breaking some new ground. Re: the "skimping" when that happens to me, it is time to dig down for that extra reserve of emotional content and take my head ache back to the board. I slap some vellum over it and passionately draw what I feel it should be. Sometimes, I find that a few minor adjustments can be made in the context of what I already have and it can add new life to the work. Other times, I trash the first version and complete a new, fresh one.
It is so cool to see your progression.

thanks for the prodpoke, had some stuff piling up and kept neglecting to scanz.

i think the color on the panel came out nicely. There are some interesting additions of warm and cools I enjoy. Thats cool that your doing a show. Do a lot of promotion, as much as you can and get as many people as possible to show. Make posters and stuff.

Are you selling work?

have to say it again, i love those large wall drawings and the small abstract color stuff you were doing.
Great CHOW! you always surprise me with your concepts. i worked on mine tonight, but it sucked so i deleted it. i'll start a new one tomorrow.

i have a suggestion about coloring your panels. the coloring of the one on the beach seems kinda tame, compared to the drawings and your crazy intricate style. try going nuts on the color, just to see where that might take you. or try the opposite with very subtle coloring to accentuate your line work.

gmc9987- Thanks, I'm actually starting to struggle with this one. I'm taking it in some new directions right now, because there's a few things I really dig about it, but the over all design I'm unhappy with.
EdwardC- I hope it's it does lead me somewhere. We'll see how it ends up.
Matsign- Glad to see you back. I'm going to put stuff up for sell, probably really cheap just so I can get rid of all the stuff and make room for more. I've had most of my fine art stuff for awhile now, always just leaned up in a corner or whatever.
Pets- Thanks, but I feel like I'm in the same boat. I worked more on the beach coloring, I hope the bottom is a little more interesting.

As I said, more of the beach. I plan on adding a little more warm colors to the left figure, and of course paint in the other guy.

AWSOME!!
the color sold me (loved that you went green instead of blue). i think defining the front flipper some more, to distinguish the depth and adding something to indicate the fact that its underwater (fish etc.). then this will be golden.

spamming your own sketchbook thread? for shame!

i think the creature looks good, and as peter mentions, the green was a very striking and interesting choice. color here is looking really solid! i'm liking the golden brown through green through yellowish colors you are employing so effectively.

crits. i think the level of detail on the actual creature is good in some areas, but could be developed more in others. the front flippers in particular feel like they need some more love and structure. the texture throughout i think is really good, but yeah those seem kind of apocryphal. In general and with regards to the concept assignment, some measure of scale would go a long way towards making this baddie more convincing as an arctic giant. whether that would be the giant squids suckling at its mouth glands or little penguin flits dashing away for safety, a size reference seems to be necessary given this assignment. I like the pose and the atmosphere you have created, but definitely i'd like to see the details and anatomy of the abdomen - tail region fleshed out and conceptualized rather than illustrated. edit: one other thing that would be really great to see would be some details in the mouth region. what's going on in there? For this kind of creature i always think about the scariest looking animal ever, the alligator snapping turtle makes a great reference. some nasty ass mouth anatomy rendered in there will really punch up what you've got here.

the details on the head are really nice, i kind of get like a chameleon kind of vibe from him. Lovely piece, though, special K – and especially good on you for doing one of these! Keep on pushing to get better! Yr making some great progress!

I love how you are experimenting. For the average viewer some of these are hard to make out, I hope they are easy for yourself to recognise (assuming they are preliminaries).

Sorry I haven't posted much. I find it so hard to chat about artists who work on styles (i guess this is a weakness on my part). Could you give a brief history of why you are doing this, some breakthoughs, and where you think you want to go with this. I might be able to help better then :D

Rist- I'm usually opposed to posting on my thread without art, but I've been plum tuckered out these last few days. Work and then sleep, and then work and more sleep. I'll be getting some new stuff in the next few days.

These designs are preliminaries for a fantasy story I've been working on. I think before I go into to much detail I want to have a good amount of art to support my ideas. My words usually end up fairly impossible to understand.

Basically I'm working on something along the lines of Shadow of the Colossus. All of these designs are golems. The green one and the gray one are both about the size of a town or city. I'm thinking about having entire civilizations on top of some of these things.

Like I said though, I want more art before I got really in depth. I have a lot of ideas though, just gotta work on it.

Ok, so spent today setting up the gallery space for my show coming up on the 5th. It's pretty sweet, the whole deal. Every first Friday my home town throws down a party downtown. Down there, there is a building called the Macon Arts Exchange. It's a three story building and every floor is filled with rooms with artist studios. First Fridays they throw a show, all the members put their junk up and I got invited fill up a room with a friend of mine.

Mostly oldies and I think it is about time get rid of them.

For the big scribble I just scribbled out some large shapes in pencils. I tried to make those all drawn from the arm. After that I just filled it in. I tried to make the majority of my influence flowers, but after awhile, I think I was just doing it mindlessly.

this little nugget of wisdom from steve kim (as posted in retep's book) i think applies to what you are doing here... advice i'ma strive to follow and achieve...

Like many the phrase "finding a style" is very problematic. Even before that, because you do seem to have a penchant for drawing, I would say take your drawing to a higher level. Right now it's 'accomplished' but not excellent and excellence is what you want. Hold yourself to a high standard and resist compromise and excellent drawing is an inevitable thing. And in the end good drawing will never fail to pay dividends. It'll make you a better painter too.

PERFECTION! ART! we demands!

Guggs- I agree that there's a lot of stuff I need to learn, but I'm not honestly to sure what it is, or how to go about it. I do face and body studies on a regular basis, and even a few master studies. It's not that I'm striving for a style, right now I've just been so stressed out, I'm just trying to keep busy with studies or just putting down what I'm feeling. If you have any suggestions on what I should sit down with and work on, I'd happily do so.

Some more from the same book. The pages are so intensely thin that everything bleeds through. It's making me consider the fronts and backs of each page and how to build images using both.

...

I've been carrying around a palette with gouache, and a waterbrush or whatever they're called. I've been putting thought into trying to design some concept art with this. Nothing solid yet.

I've been real busy with school, some how maintaining a completely average spot in all my classes no matter how much work I DO or don't put in. The studio I was attempting to open with a friend has pretty much fallen through and it's of course after the fact that I got super hyped about it and started telling people about how much ass it was going to kick, the other guy has pulled the ultimate flake.

The first sketchbook page on post #155 is great! the colors are eye pleasing.
It looks like the new project is coming along, a lot of fresh ideas.
Putting some of the creatures in environments would be a great exercise, especially since the creatures are landscapes for other creatures. so, the landscapes would be studies of other creatures(thats what i got from your explanation, let me know if I'm off base).

It would be great to join team ticklebear! I start school in a little over a week, so i won't be able to dedicate much time after that. But if you two are up for two extra character portraits count me in.

Oh, love the little watercolor guy in post #154

Love your quick sketching! Which is what a 'sketchbook' is for! I wonder though what your overall goal is for your art career? Are you looking into doing concept art?

Phew, it's been awhile!

Jailhouse-thanks!
coreanseoul-try scribbling a lot!
davewclayton-thanks
peter-you're right about the environments. I need to start making some finished pieces as well! I've gotten lazy as HELLLL!!!!!! AAAAAUUUGGGGHGHHHH!!H!H!!!!
Rist- I've thought about concept art possibilities, or looking into Illustrations, and I'm sure I'm going to try my hand at both. As of right now though I've been working on a business plan and have been saving up so I can start an fine arts studio/gallery, with the possibility of making it a small scale art supply store. My hometown has ONLY a Micheals, yet Macon has some what a small solid art scene. I also have ideas for Installations. Actually if/when I become successful enough to do as I please, there are several things I plan on constructing.

In time. For now, here are the last few pages of one of my sketchbooks. I havn't finished one in awhile, and there's two or three more which are nearing their ends as well.

Just started school again. The first few of these are for my first assignment. "Make a loose landscape with chalk pastels." I have 5 days to do this one loose landscape, so I decided to make as many as possible. I still have tonight, I might do another.

First is another chalk pastel piece for my art class. It's a really lame class, but I get a chance to do art and it's going to count on my GPA. That's fun.

Here's some of my recent stuff. Some abstract type drawings, good stress reliever/time killer, a character, and a few face studies.

That hillbilly bear piece is killing me! Such awesome characterization. Everybody looks dumb and ugly, but somehow endearing

I've decided to get back into using my tablet and have been working on scribbles here and there, but decided tonight to dive into something more polished. I started thinking about making a mock up 2d sidescroller and started on the background image. I'm pretty happy with parts of it and I stumbled on some little ideas I plan using for new pieces.

And the second image is the final piece for my art show I had in January. The whole show was focused on my Yellowstone landscapes. This last one is 8 feet wide and 4 feet tall. Mixed media between house paints and chalk pastels. It will be worked on some more, to really push the depth, but I only had a night to get it started/done, and that's as far as I got.

Keep up with the blog THOMAS, we be posting.
Thanks, you're the muse for my redneck mythic epic.

Nice textures, I also like the fact that most your stuff has lots of things in it, wich makes them entertaining, I spent some nice 5 minutes only with the bear thing. The Syle is also quite original. I¡d only try to work further on line quality and brush stroke economy, still, looks cool m8.

!!!!!!! WOW!!!!!!!!

The "fuck shaving" piece might be my favorite thing you've done to date!
I love the style of the letters! I love how free and uninhibited that and the "darkwing and the duck" piece are. You are kicking some major ass here lately. That foreshortening sketch loots very dynamic, great thing for you to be practicing! I just can't end a sentence here without an exclamation point!
That "screenshot" sketch is also very cool.
