I'm undertaking a pretty big project as my final Senior project at university. Basically, I'm both doing the whole artistic design for, and then modeling out the art assets for a 3D Film Noir game. In my final Illustration class I'm doing the designs, and in my Advanced 3D Modeling class I'll be modeling these and putting them into the Unreal 3 engine.
The basic idea was The Maltese Falcon meets Call of Cthulu meets Steampunk. Where you have a mix of classic film noir set in the late 1930s, mixed with a bit of max science, occult and voodoo magic, and evil creatures lurking in the shadows.
But, the majority of the world needs to be period accurate late 1930s locations, fashion, and props. On this base I want to add a bit of that mysticism and horror.
Besides finding good reference from that era, another major problem is that this game design will be in color, at least some muted colors, but there isn't much in the way of color reference from that time.
So far I've been using Shorpy and finding as many 1930s photos as I can to use as general reference.
