Trying modeling with super sculpey soon even though I've never touched anything but wet gray clay ages ago. My main thing is actually graphite/charcoal drawing. Had a question about armatures.
Instead of using a wire armature is there any reason foam wouldn't work if it were sealed first (so your clay doesn't get foam stuff stuck in it). The more dense green foam for flower arrangments is what I'm thinking of. Surface/facial planes could easily be carved form it. Then applying small wooden pegs in different depths to plot out muscle structures would also work. Basically using the foam as a minimally carved geometric surface to build features/muscle onto,
and finally thin layers of clay (sort of clay skin) to refine it all. Sound stupid or somewhat workable. What does everyone else use when modeling busts or similiar things.

I wouldn't recommend using foam if you plan to use Sculpey on it and bake it. Foams are highly flammable and will melt or burn in oven, and worse, they give off toxic gases.

Anything that won't melt or burn at 270 F should be fine to use Sculpey on.

I've experimented with using different materials such as foil, cardboard and paper mache...they all work fine as long as they are covered up with clay and not touching the heating coils. Salt dough works great too, if you don't mind the long drying time before using.

No worries on the foam burning cause that was my first thought as well. I don't plan on baking anything yet. I'll probably just be trying out different techniques and re-using the clay each time until I build some confidence to try something more challenging.
