This is a painting I am doing over the weekend for my class. He's obviously not done, and I'd appreciate C&C along the way with this one.

Looking great so far. You nailed the eyes man, great job. Watch the body, right now it looks a little off but as you touch it up and add whats needed I'm sure it will work itself out.

My only critique is that you should center him on the canvas or maybe even a little to the left. With him looking to our right as well as being on the right my eye wants to fall off that side of the page. Unless of course you plan on added objects on the left that will stand out and balance the composition.

Great stuff!

you should turn up the brightness on your monitor. you have black touchups that are showing on top of a dark grey. my monitor is really bright. i dont think it will matter if you are printing this dude out, but if you plan to use him in a digital portfolio, you should watch out for that. my monitor is really bright and it makes your image look bad.

I'm almost done with the face, added acouple things, and retouched the body.

DigitaL FusioN - Thanks for the comments. I think your right about him being off to the right. I'll try moving him to the left and see hwo it looks.

killing.people - I'm going to turn up my monitor and see if I can fix that.

I moved him to the right, which does look much better. I added acouple things and detailed the body a little more.

wowow i love how this is truning out!!!
From the neck upwards is perfect in my opinion. As for downwards, I think it looks really plain compared with the rest. I don't know, maybe you could add some other details, or more highlights or something.
And why a plain blue boring background? Why not a foresty background or something??? Make me happy!!

lol Cadence, yeah I was thinking the same thing about the body and im going to try and detail it. And that I have already turned in this project for class, this is just now for myself so I'm thinking about adding a nice foresty background or something :)

I like the figure and the eyes are really cool too. I hate to do this but i think i better, the face painting is too clean even for me, since it is an african person (Zulu from the looks) the face make up is too clean, try adding some rough texture to it and i think it will look more hand painted.

If you are trying for optical realism the shadows are a bit too strong towards the bottom. But if you are a fan of Carravagio and tenebrism I think you're just about there.

National Geographic?
my personal fav source for all things cool.
great rendering so far...the eyes are awesome (his left especially)
the blue's not doing it for me...
and i agree with pvrhye...you could even clean up/define some more on the torso...and even the headdress...

I'm working on a background right now, gonna put him in a jungle of some sort. Im gonna try and add some detail to the face, as jilted_one pointed it out it looks a little too smooth. And I am planning on defining the body more, hopefully more realistic. Thanks for the C&C :)

i think the watch is takin' down all the pic...

I used the watch to help give some character to him, showing that he was westernized or something for my art project. Now that it is a personal project with the background and stuff, I'm considering removing it.

How about removing the ciggy too ? ( Or perhaps that is a tribal thing, not a cigarette) :).
It is good, though I have to admit the head looks a lot more "worked" than the rest of him. If i was to pick three things to say, I'd say, : it needs a bit of reflected light on on his right side, the bottom of his nose is too light and body needs more details :). Still good though :).

The blue background looks great to me, and the watch and the smoke aswell. Itīs my belief that he is waiting for the cameraman to start filming or something, and the blue background is the bluescreen. He looks absolutely bored, love it.

Add a microphone boom and its perfect.

Thanks for the feedback guys :). I'm planning on finishing it this weekend adding more detail to the parts that looks unfinished also along with a reasonable background. I'm glad you guys like it.

very nice

only crit is the drop shadow. i dont think it goes well, what does it look like without it.

with a subject this dark you are bound to have contrast issues, the drop shadow makes it worse. IMHO
