yea the perspective on that one was messed up..i honestly didnt put too much thought into the perspective on that piece....i dont usually take out enough time to work out my perspective...and its a bad habit i should work on..thanks for the crit......ok heres one with alittle better perspective

THese are both cool pieces. But the perspective does screw up the first one, like Manley said. That's a wicked looking elevator btw.

The second one conveys a nice industrial mood. It's early morning on the docks, and this is what it looks like. ;)

Post some more!

The similarity IS quite strong...

Giang79, had you ever seen this piece? Did it influence the work you created?

pogonip
November 8th, 2003, 12:48 PM
Even if it was 'influenced' they look nothing alike ...I really don't think it's very profesional to post that guys work in the htread especially since it kinda steals the show

ALSO !!! :flamig: :ranting: I noticed that you are linking that image right from the guys site !!! Does he know you are stealing his bandwidth ??? Did you get permission to post his artwork to make your stupid point that isnt even a point ???

nopes never seen that before...dont know the artist either awesome work tho....yea that composition trick is pretty prevalent in my work..i used to have alot of curves that lead into the paintings and what not...tryin to get away from that alitte.....but if ure sayin that the techiness of it combined with the composition is somehow very very similiar...then...i would have to agree...but all i can say to defend myself is that nopes..never seen that piece before

anyways heres some stuff that is less curvy and hopefully less similiar to any other artists' work.

Ireally like these last two, especialy the first one..its awesome. Though I would have expected to see a bridge or soemthing of that sort connecting the platforms and the land. Good work!

Giang79
November 8th, 2003, 01:35 PM
thanks grinn...hahaha that funny that u mention a bridge...because originally there was one crossing that center building with the other side..but i took it out because..another thing i find that i tend to do is paint alot of stuff with bridges in them...like almost a third of my older stuff had bridges in them...

ok time for a quick break from this environment stuff...some characters

heres my cutesty end of my portfolio

I really your 'tuscany' environment, really nice range of values and I especially like the time of the day you choose to illustrate that. Looks like a very nice place to actually live in, Bridges would be good for easy travel, the waters seems shallow enough to swim through or go for a morning swim. How about some boats?

Great stuff! I really like your "cutesy" stuff, especially the wizard dude/girl with the mask. Cool design.

November 8th, 2003, 11:24 PM
thanks for all the replies....yea the whole thing about copying..i dont really care...cause i know the whats what..anyways

heres a piece thats alittle tighter..and a few that are not....tight stuff for me personally is very boring to look at but i know its important for getting jobs especially in games....its alot harder for me to do loose stuff...

heres more cutesy stuff..since everyone seems to like that stuff....

http://members.aol.com/mem0ries4u/Portfolio/nemochar2

http://members.aol.com/mem0ries4u/Portfolio/nemocharenvi

some stuff thats alittle more "moody" i guess...the boat is a combo of boat and tank with the tracks...at the bottom

http://members.aol.com/mem0ries4u/Portfolio/forest

http://members.aol.com/mem0ries4u/Portfolio/boats

ill post some characters i did for biogear tomorrow hopefully....oh almost everything except the cutesy stuff was photoshop

your backgrounds and environments are yoru definite strengths... great stuff.. im not all that into the character work though

Giang79
November 9th, 2003, 12:12 AM
thanks strang i went to the mullins school...aka art center college of design...

yea seems people are either liking the environment stuff or the character stuff...rarely both...oh well maybe the cause the styles are soo far apart...

heres some really old stuff that is maybe a middle ground..

http://members.aol.com/mem0ries4u/Gfx/garden

http://members.aol.com/mem0ries4u/Gfx/wonder

http://members.aol.com/mem0ries4u/Gfx/meteor

those were done for scott robertsons class when he was teachin advanced ent....think i posted these like a 6months ago...anyways heres some more kinda middle ground stuff i did for ryan church's advanced entertainment class...these are about one year old

http://members.aol.com/mem0ries4u/Gfx/dramatic

http://members.aol.com/mem0ries4u/Gfx/jizhornets

as u can see i used to paint alittle tighter...(on the 2nd from the bottom piece that character in the foreground..i painted his boot print tho u cant tell from this small version of the painting ) and spent more time on my perspective back then...these days my stuff is more to get the idea across faster...ive done my share of rendered out pieces...

like those loose pieces above...or maybe im just being lazy? hahah i guess its up to others to decide that....

I like both the characters and environments. But I guess I'm coming from an animation background and am wanting to go into preproduction, so I can appreciate both, I wouldn't mind seeing some more exploration with the characters though, or some little bit of story to put them into context. I saw some of your digital paintings when you came into Vincent's design 1 class a couple weeks ago. Really nice stuff. I'd say of your earlier works here, that rainy dock scene is working the best if you just add a little more atmosphere between the dock and those buildings at the bottom. What could also be cool, because I don't see people doing it much, would be playing with depth of field. Blur out stuff that the camera isn't focused on. It makes for a great mood, though use it sparingly ;p Anywho, once again, awesome stuff! Keep it up, and good luck!

DV8 - yea i dont work anywhere right now....

Phuzion- yea vincents is awesome alot to learn from that guy.....ill probably be in there this week to show him my entire portfolio...the cutesy stuff actually does have a story to it ..something i wrote involving sibling rivary..or sumthin..

the depth of field thing? yea i did it alittle in that one piece above..but didnt push it...afraid it would look cheesy...but i do have one that is pushed alittle more...
like this environment....

yeah, the DOF in that one looks nice, though if the figure's that blurry, then the ground around him would be too, but it still look nice, and not overdone.
As for the characters. I know there's a story behind it, but you may want to try and convey it a little more in the images, but more than that, what I'm noticing is that you're not really playing with their power centers. For the boy and the girl, their torsos are always totally erect. Exagerate it more. If he's scared, make him really hunched over. Right now they're looking really stiff, even in their actions poses. I love their designs, but there's no life to them yet in posing excersizes. Play with them being off balance, as that is where the sense of motion will be conveyed. If they're skipping or running, really overdo the line of action and give a nice curve. With cartooning and animation, you really have to go over the top, or it won't look right. It's strange, but that's how it works. I could explain it better if I actually showed you, but oh well. I hope you can get something out of all this rambling ;p Nice work on the range of styles too. Keep it up. Peace

November 9th, 2003, 04:00 PM
hey thanks phuzion...yea i dont have any idea what power center or line of action means...i wasnt really trying to hard in those sketches to push anything...yea im not much of a figure drawer and im by nooooo means an animator....at all..so yea any help would be appreciated...maybe u can show me this tuesday when i come into vinces?

P.S. whats phuzion mean? just curious cause my first name is phu..hehehe

And I love the rendering technique on the witch man. Very very nice. And what's really cool is that she has a unique face. Very nicely done. And now, back to mounting my color wheel!! Cya tuesday, Phu.

Yeah, good 'ol Steve. He's a cool guy. He just said you and a few others have really strong portfolios. You, Felix and a couple more. I haven't seen Felix's stuff, though I've heard a lot about it. You're stuff is really good, and deffinately industry quality. Your sense of light is very keen, especially for natural light. And your environments rock, something I need to work on myself. Killah killah stuff duuuuuude.

Giang79,

You have a lot of cool work here, a lot of variety in style. The bio Gear character thumbnails are very interesting, I'd like to see some of those blown up and finished. Your darker looking environments look very Mullins inspired.
