For your very first digital painting, that's very well done! :) Looks like you're getting the hang of using a wacom, which can be tricky to do at first.

Now then, Constructive crit hehe.

The first thing that presented itself was the arm holding up the staff/flag (that's another point actually, is there a spearhead or a flag at the top of that pole? It looks like he's malitia with the armour, but the smaller flags down the neck of the staff could suggest he's the flag bearer for an army. Though more than that he looks like an individual demanding a lot of respect, a chief or something, be careful about ambiguity and how other people might interpret your design)...

... Sorry, bit of a tangent there: "The first thing that presented itself was the arm holding up the staff/flag..." It looks like he's got his arm in an uncomfortable position, bring the elbow down. You can get away with only lowering it a bit, but maybe even having the elbow drawn vertically in relation to the body would help give the effect you're trying to achieve.

Keep the centre of balance in mind too, it looks close to "spot-on" here, but there's still an indication that his centre of balance is a little off, and that he *might* fall forward.

-- Despite the criticism, this is a really cool piece, and an excellent initial digital piece at that. I love the colours you've used, and how you've made a powerfully evil, "monstorish" character still fit a colourful theme instead of the "black, white and red" colours that most people go for. :)

Liquidspider: Thanks :D

BlightedArt: A big thank you for the lengthy reply :) To be honest I never really thought much about his status or job, I never seem to give my characters much more purpose than 'Cool-looking guy/girl in weird armour' and I can see the problems with this. I'll definitely be putting more thought into this in the future! Also you're completely right about the arm comment. Thanks one last time for the praise and encouragement :)

Please keep the crits coming! If anyone could give me advice on the background/mud that'd be great, as the ground kind of stumped me when I got to it. Tytyty!

I love this character, it's a very cool design.

Is that lava in the background? If so, would it be creating an additional light source on the figure?
