This is actually my first attempt at sculpting something using "real" anatomy. My previous sculptures have been entirely products of my own imagination, so there really hasn't been any "rights or wrongs" when it comes to the anatomical structure. So, comments and crits are very welcome since this is my "first"! :)

Sabrina, this is a nice start. But your anatomy seems a bit off, during my internet perusals I came across this tutorial for unicorns. And I thought the anatomy shown might be of help to you. It details the build up from beginning to end to. Well hope it helps you. Best of luck.

The beginning is very good, but I would not try to begin to detail the head because the main thing is to get a proportionate body and then you can make the neck and the head regarding the form of the body. To detail I begin with the paws, then for the neck and the head, and I finish the body at the end because while I work the other areas it is very probable that I catch the figure with the hand and if I detail it I squash the work. Anyway you can continue modeling this way the figure and looking for other alternatives, I learn much proving things, don't worry if you think that you have to undo some part of the horse in some moment of the modeling one, the important thing is that you come closer to your objectives and feel satisfied with your work. Good work, continue modeling it!!!

Yes, I am aware of the anatomy being a bit off, which is exactly why I want crits and comments. :) Haven't baked anything yet so that I easily can correct any mistakes. Thank you for the tip Siddiq, I will take a look! :D

I guess I better go look for my book on anatomy too...

Oh my goodness, I am such a fan of your work, especially your "birth of pegasos" sculpture, it is amazing!! :D you inspired me to take on the challenge of equine sculpting! :) Thank you so much for the tips!! :)

I'm not sure if my attempt at "sticking out the ribs" was a success or not... The horse isn't turning out to be very anatomically correct at all, but somehow I like it anyway! It feels more personal somehow. :) I'm thinking that I might do something "fantasy" with it, what do you think? Maybe add some more protruding bones or some horns somewhere? ^^

It is looking better, going the fantasy route might not be a bad idea...it could work well. Keep sculpting!

Good! you go advancing, and I see that you go looking for the form of your horse. Don't look for the details now, the ribs go at the end, in a real horse they see each other very not very marked and you can mark them at the end when you give it the proportions. In my first horses I desired to see the quick result and I gave details at the same time that I gave form, when I saw that I had given details to a part that didn't still have enough mass and I made it again, I felt desires of hitting my head against the walls, since when modeling in epoxy it meant a lot of time and material. If you have patience and you work the proportions first the rest of the horse it will arise under your burins. If you want you can!!! If finally you want to create a horse applying fantasy and imagination, you can make a horse dragon, you have experience making dragons, you can model horns instead of the mane, to place a horn in the forehead and another on the nose...
I have drawn a sketch of a horse seen from above, the white areas without lining are higher areas and the lined ones are areas in descent. As you can see the neck of a horse is thinner than it seems and the barrel has egg form :D, the hindquarters forms a square more or less and the shoulders form a rectangle. The other sketch took it loan of a web of equine artists :x, it is very useful, you only have to take like reference the longitude of the head and comparing it with the rest of lines, calculating this way the rest of longitudes. I hope the sketches are useful for you, I usually draw it on a printed in paper picture.

Continue with your figure, it will be your first horse and you will learn a lot with it!!

I like how it looks a little cartoony. I'd paint it white with soft blue shadows, but that might just be me. :)

Keep it up!

Thank you!! :D Hmm, white with blue shadows... that's an idea, thanks! ^^ Or black with red flames, depending on how "evil" I want it to be. ;)

Now I've added the right leg and hoof (details will come later on), I've also made the neck a bit thinner with help from Mariach's sketch:

Okay, I haven't updated in quite a while, but I have sculpted. The "horse" has definately been "fantasy-ized", lol. xD (It still hasn't been baked yet, so everything is still changeable!)

Thank you so much!! :D I'm very glad that you like it!! ^^

I'm thinking of adding some "bat-wings", but I'm having difficulty making them... do you have any good tips on making very thin wings?

Yeah, I haven't thought of that, thanks! I'll "bulk 'im up"! ^^

Well I think that I would make thin bat-wings with metallic mesh or aluminum leaves. I created Pegasus' wings with aluminum leaves that I got of my energy drink's can, if you decide using drink's can you must be careful because I cut my fingers several times with it. To create the wings over the aluminum leave you only have to draw the bat-wing's silhoutte in it and then you have cut it with a scissors following the line that you drew. Take care with your fingers!!

Thank you so much Mariahc!! :D

Here are some updates, I've added the "horns" onto the head now and I've also slimmed the head, making it look a little more "bony" and emaciated. I've also started on the left wing, comments are greatly appreciated, especially on the wing since it is my first! :)

It might be a little tricky to attach the wings and get them to stay on, given the shortness of the wire. The wings look pretty heavy and they won't stay on unless the wire goes in deeper. Maybe make little holes in the horse and bake it, and then glue the wings on?

Thanks, I'm glad you like the wing since it is my very first wing ever made! ^^ It took me a looong time to finally figure out how to make the wing... I didn't use any foil or anything in between the armature of the wing, just very thin, plain sculpey. I'm a bit worried that it will be damaged when I bake it tho, because it's so thin... well, we'll see! :p
