Found normally in urban area where there are lots of noise. Tail is used to detect and find the source of the sound. The red lumpy blob is used to absorb the sound waves and vibrations, which it feeds on. Oh yeah its can climb the wall like a gecko... O_O...

The Schallaal (German for Sound-Eel) usually sneaks up on all kinds of sound making sea dwellers like Dolphins. Also favoures deep sea volcanos.

Concept: Phonotoidea Aquaticus
Phonotoidea Aquaticus is a small worm like creature that is found near ocean beaches, waterfalls, and rushing water, which are some of the loudest naturally occuring places in nature. It uses the drum like forehead to gather and convert the sound to a usable energy. This creature over the centuries has lost the need for a usable mouth or eyes. The drum helps orient the creature in space through a form of echolocation, as high frequency sounds are emitted through membranes deep within the drum, similar to that of the North American Bat. The fine hairs and cavities on the surface of the creature help to capture and filter moisture from the surrounding land or sea. Phonotoidea Aquaticus is mainly a nocturnal creature. The breed quickly and in large numbers, but lack much in the way of self defense.

Concept: Phantom Fish
These aquatic creatures were coined "Phantom Fish" by the navy, due to their ability to interrupt the sonar equipment of submarines. Phantom Fish are attracted to the ultrasonic sounds throughout the sea, and it is hypothesized that this may be their primary energy source. They are known to flock around anything that makes noise in the ultrasonic spectrum, such as whales, and often attach themselves using their sticky dorsal fins. They thrust their hand-like tail claws into their pray, not to cause damage, but to precipitate an increase in noise from which they may feed upon, using the mysterious organ on their tails.

Thunder Suckers live in the violent atmosphere of their home planet, Mjalnuur. Thunder Suckers don't have a head so much as a large, flexible, cartilaginous organ that works like an ear. Thunder Suckers feed on the sonic boom of the lightning in Mjalnuur's stormy clouds. Long filaments on a Thunder Sucker's back 'see' the static discharge that preceeds the lightning strikes so the creature can position itself for optimum feeding without getting zapped.

These small critters typically grow to the size of a baseball. Currently all the rage for a child's pet. They are highly intelligent creatures, perfectly harmless and require no sustenance except that of the sound of laughter. Hours of fun and the best companion to be had.

Concept: Phonophagus


In the last years, a formerly unknown species from the deepsea has become a real plague in coastal regions. The phonophagus, a tentacled mollusc with a huge, gaping mouth that is shaped like a funnel to catch up as much noise as possible,lives on a very unusual diet: it metabolizes the energy of sound waves. In the past the oceans were mostly quiet, and the phonophagi could barely support themselves off the songs of whales and the noise of the waves. Therefore they were very rare and did not grow larger than a child's ear.
With the spread of motor ships and sonars, the sea became a much louder place, and so the phonophagi grew and proliferated. Their bodies don't only grow to huge dimensions now, but also tougher and more resistant to the low pressure near the surface, which enables them to come very close to their most abundant food source - the human civilisation. Now they are the largest animal that ever lived on earth, clogging port entrances and occasionally engulfing screaming children at the beach.

Concept: Sonitus Modulatio

Found often 'grazing' nearing space ports that receive large amounts of traffic, the Sonitus Modulatio is a titan of a species. Scientists believe that they feed on sound waves, in particular, low thrumming bass tones. The suspended carapace captures the passing waves and channels them along into the beasts belly. The waves are modulated to increasing complexity, via a intricate series of hollow bones and membranes. The waves once they reach their destination, are used to stabilise what is believed to be a singularity. Our current theories suggest that the slight radiation given off by this singularity fuel colonies of bacteria, that are responsible for producing the vital nutrients required by the Sonitus Modulatio. Unfortunately no hard evidence is available, apart from numerous reports from ship pilots. Correlating detection of low level radiation and gravity field distortions on landing routes that fly over or in the vicinity of grazing herds.

This strange member of the order Lepidoptera, is truly a wonder indeed. its ability to ingest sound as source of nutrients is not the only baffling trait. the incest is truly unique as it develops a beneficial symbiotic relationship with a larger host. the creature makes its home behind the out ear of a host. tendrils then burrow painless into the flesh of the host forming a bond with the skin. a small tendril form the thorax then curls into the ear form under the lobe and migrates deep inside to the inner ear where it grafts to the organ. a small mandible on the head affixes to the side of the head near the ear and "syncs with the host. normal patterns of sleeping and activity are denoted by the hosts own patterns or lifestyle. once attached it absorbs the sound thorough the host own ear to absorb sound. its excrement , oddly enough nourishes the hosts sensory organ granting preternatural hearing.

this strange incest is now breed on different planets as listening devices and are part of some military protocols for field equipment. its nickname the "bugtooth" garners it a few laughs and ridicule among the smugglers and riff raff. but fetch a high price on the black markets of distant fringe planets.

Concept: Tacere Vita
Tacere vita feeds on（it can transform air vibration into its body's energy ） noises above 60 decibel.Noises above 60 decibel can not be heard by hunman's ear when that guy located 5 feet in circumference to that creature.

This creature lives on the planet Tgo334 where electric storms bash the surface regulary. It lives on the soundwaves that it captures in its dish and guides to the soft beak where the vibration produces fluids to digest the hard algae on Tgo334. When encountering a Volvap the best thing you can do is scream as hard as you can, this calms him down.

Concept: Fuglewunch
Fuglewunches are normally very light and nible creatures, usually residing in the remotest parts of forests and jungle, only absorbing the quiet sounds of nature in order to provide it with the energy it needs to survive. Some, however, get addicted to sound consumption and make their way to large sleepless cities where they hide in carparks, alleyways, motorway bridges, construction sites or anywhere else where large amount of noise can be found. Having found a suitable place, they open up the flower like crest on their heads and can spend up to four days in one place doing nothing but mindlessly indulging in sound-eating.

Concept: Silence of the lands
As these creatures are born they are very colorful since they can absorb a whole range of soundwaves. As they grow older and their sound absorbing organs start to fail they loose color. Depending on the area failing will cause different colors to fade.
In the beginning of time they could live for a very long time. Slowly growing on the sound of the wind, birdsong and crickets. Occational jumps in growth as a thunderstorm or a stampede passed by. With the comming of the industrial revolution they tended to die young as broiler rarely reaching puberty.
Now as we get more and more aware of the negative influence noice can have on our health an increase in number has occured. The scientists agree that we are now at a healthy level of reproduction. They make great pets as juvenile. Still being quite small without needs of the likes of cats and dogs. Cause of their ability to absorb sound they make great use when in a noisy environment. Some people even wear them on their shoulders to lessen the ambient noise. Only problem is that is you are very fond of your pet then you'll want to starve it so that they don't outgrow your house too fast. As they get bigger they develop glans that will produce alot of mucus. This slime is a very potent coloring. Hence the intense colored clothes seen in some cultures.
Alot of creatures that outgrow their hosts find shelter in reserves close to airports, marshalling yards, sound studios and club districts.

Concept: Resoner
This is a very cunning creature and has interesting method to feed on sound. It has strings that can be stretched or loosen by neck. Stretching changes the resonance frequency of strings. If creature find sound, it adjusts strings to match their resonance frequency with sound's frequency. After it's matched, the resonance occurs and sound's volume is multiplied by few times. The higher volume is, the more food Resoner gets. As said before, it's cunning - for example, it can use cats favourite food to force them meowing for food. Of course, it won't give food unless Resoner's stomach is filled. Some people says that creature is sadistic because it smiles, like as it was enjoying torturing poor cats.

Concept: Maareson


The Maareson, when pregnant, absorbs nutrients from the surrounding environment to allow for the growth of the baby-which develops in the womb of the mother much like a dried out sponge, only growing (very rapidly once it exits the vaginal passage) once it comes into contact, and absorbs the sea water it is born into. Once in the big wide world the Maareson is fully grown, it does not require food like other sea creatures, as it derives it's energy from sound waves, which it absorbs, and converts into kinetic energy which it uses to pump it's heart and power it's muscles. It's a small little creature (only 2 inches long), and is often found in bustling coral reefs where the crashing of the waves on the surface give it much sustenance.

The dry, frigid, and frequent windstorms of the harsh southern deserts of Ge’ermiund II have, through the eons, caused nature to conjure up some of the most ingenious forms of biological energy use on the planet. Agreed on by many G-2 researchers to be the most fantastical of all is the genus Sonvictitus. These creatures, supposed to have evolved from carnivores (based on their skull structure as well as the musculature of their forearms), somehow ingest sound, and sound alone, through an interconnected system of a modified mouth, “esophagus”, nostrils, and ears. Its nostril flaps have developed into long, constantly waving tubes, and massive, almost wing like, mobile pinnae help take in as much sound as possible. On average, Sonvictitus are about 1.5 meters tall, but S. saxagulus is undoubtedly the largest of the genus, coming in at an astonishing 2.7 meters, and no doubt in help from the fact that the particular desert it lives in is constantly bombarded with high winds, in junction with the haunting sounds of the towering Sibilo trees. Living alone for the better part of their lives, S. saxagulus only mate once every 6 years, taking most of that time to not only find a mate, but to travel back together to the mating grounds. An appropriate ecological niche has not yet been found for this creature, but it seems to have few predators, if only the occasional wandering Pyramilatus.

Concept: Steponeus Stoneus Sleperious
At first glance often mistaken for a convenient stepping stone, it is commonly found in rapids of creeks and river. The SSS feeds off of the sound of the water rushing past it. The multitude of holes found on it's skin are actually "ears" used to capture sound. The "ears" process the sound into a central chamber where it bounces around until it is absorbed by the "stomach". Excess sound that can not be converted into energy is excreted out a tube at it's bottom. The three heavy muscular legs are used to stabilize the creature against the current. It breathes through a blow hole on the top off it's body. The muscle flaps around the hole allow it to be closed if water threatens to enter it. SSSs generally do not leave the safety of the water. If they do, they fall easily to predators as they can not see, and are very slow moving due to the design of their legs. They don't move for month's at a time and you can usually tell how long a SSS has stayed in one spot by the amount of moss growing on it. They are around 2.5 feet tall.

One of the rare and most coveted finds in the Rossmore crash, Awetus or "Arrived With E.T. in the U.S." is a creature unlike any other on our planet.

After decades of observation, study and dissection, scientists have determined that this being has come from a planet where sound is the mainstay of life. With no discernible face or mouth, this creature instead has highly evolved orifices and "Flanges" running along the underside of its belly, believed to be direct connections to its internal organs.

Through a process still studied to this day, sounds are captured through these openings and hyper condensed into a form of very raw matter which Awetus then turns into a sort of sustenance to survive. The Flanges help to capture and channel the peak of the sound wave toward these cone like openings.

Found to be harmless and relatively self sustaining, this beautiful and strange newcomer to our galaxy has been released and found to flourish in the confines of a top secret aircraft and weapons test site in the south western U.S.

The food here is plentiful.

Concept: Tiptoe

The creature lives in the deadland where food,etc are almost non-existent, the creature's body structure has evoled to the most simple and basic form, it's very light and fragile, only keeping what is needed for survival.

The food source of the creature is the most unique of all, it feeds on sound. Via the ultra thin webbing between the circular shape holes, it absorb sound waves and the energy is process in its special organs, filtering out the good sound waves. The sound nutrients is then store at the pouch-like organ at the back of the head,etc and the different wave nutrient results in the bright multi-colored skin. Due to its fragile body and bright colors, it becomes easy prey for predators, there fore while it feeds on sound, it is often in hiding and very very quiet, giving it the name Tiptoe.

At the center of the creature is its most vital organ, it is protected by the structure of the torso and legs. This is also where the creature's offspring inhabits until it is ready to be born.

The northern stingbuckle, also known as ear of the forest, is one of the biggest mysteries to scientists.
It is the only creature that completely lives off sounds. The sensitive stings on its back are able to recieve even the gentlest sound and convert it into energy. living on the floor of forests with broad-leafed trees every passing animal and even the slightest wind moving a few leafes gives it enough energy to survive. with it's very laidback lifestyle it barely moves and has very underdeveloped eyes and no mouth. most of the time it's hiding enjoying a cool breeze just moving in the worst draught to stir a few leafes.

It has been known sense prehistory that sound, especially voice, holds special powers in our world. Indeed, many scholars believe that our ability to manipulate sound at a high level of complexity is what allowed our race, when it was young, to triumph over all other species of animal and attain civilization. Through sound, we not only communicate and use language, but also cast spells, charms, incantations, and make use of any number of other Vocal Powers.
In early days, it was believed that man alone had the use of the Vocal Powers. However, in this new age of science and exploration, it has been discovered that many other creatures have magical abilities, though few are as well-developed in their use of these powers as man. One creature with surprising magic abilities is the Sonagama. Lean, quick-moving reptiles as large as a small man, the Sonagama has developed an ability similar to the magical power known as soundleeching. Using this power, it draws all sound in its environment towards itself, just as a powerful magnet attracts metal objects. Using its fantastically enlarged cheek-flaps, this sound is funneled into its mouth, and through a number of both physiological and magical adaptations this sound is converted is converted into pure energy, and it is this energy on which the Sonagama lives. The creature literally eats sound.
Now, let us discuss the natural history of the Sonagama, as far as our current state of knowledge allows. As mentioned, the Sonagama is a reptile, specifically a lizard related to the agamas, hence its name. It is large, with long, muscular limbs that allow it to both run at great speed as well as rear up on its hind limbs to nearly the hight of a man. Its skull is highly modified, with long quadrate bones allowing it to achieve a terrific gape when opening its mouth--the large the mouth, the better ability to consume sound, apparently. Its enormous cheek flaps--the most remarkable physical characteristic of the species--are supported by highly modified palate and hyoid bones, which swing outward from the jaws to hold the flaps rigid. When the mouth is closed, these bones are folded against the sides of the head and neck, with the cheek flaps hanging like curtains around the throat and shoulders. The cheek flaps themselves serve two functions. Firstly, they assist with funneling sound into the creature's throat, much like our ears funnel sound into the skull. Secondly, they make the creatures seem tremendously larger and more intimidating than they actually are, a useful tactic both for establishing dominance within the species and for frightening away potential predators. The Sonagama shares its habitat with a number of species that have rudimentary Vocal Powers. These creatures seem to be the preferred "prey" of the Sonagama, for magical sound obviously contains more energy than normal sound. However, in a pinch, any form of sound will sustain the Sonagama. When the Sonagama deploys its soundleeching powers, the world around it grows suddenly silent, with even the loudest noises seeming to become muffled and distant. Vocal Powers become useless when in the presence of a Sonagama, for the sound is absorbed before it can have any magical effect. For this reason, tamed Sonagamas have become popular guard animals for those who wish to protect themselves from malicious Vocal attacks.

I also really liked the exaggerated look of Lander's and the subtlety of njoo's. The membranes are really nice, nearly invisible.

I voted fore njoo, but I'm wondering, is your creature supposed to be asymmetrical? It seems a little bit odd that the one "bone" extends down a lot farther on the closer side, as everything else seems to be pretty symmetrical. The perspective on the forward membrane also seems a little off?

I voted for Zup. Zups paint strokes are very visceral, the color scheme is nice and muted it has a definite marine feel to it, a beach on a cloudy day. my eye is led around the piece very nicely. defiantly a good composition and a very successful piece.

Pretty weird theme this week, actually. Since most artists here try to be realistic as possible on the designs, its funny to see how this turned out.
I'll comment some of my "favorite" entries.

Kfeeras, The design of the creature was really "weird" a nice mix of organic with machine-like shapes, It had lots of potential... Too bad the rendering ended up looking rushed. But great concept!

ZUPZUP, If Njoo didn't showed up, this one would probably win my vote. The idea of "Energy from vibration" is pretty nice, and the design of the creature is really something I would love to see in a game.

Arekkusu, Another great idea, I love how it looks like earbones, but I think everything ended up looking "too heavy", i would've prefered a more delicate design on the bones, this way the creature could capture less loud sounds.

Tommoy, Great rendering of the piece, the design looks solid too. One of my favorites.

Lander, While i'm not a big fan of the design, the scene ended up looking very very nice, with lots of feeling actually. Saved for studies!

Tonic, Another great use of the "Vibration" concept, I love the arp-body. I would love to see this painting finished.

Scorge, Very alien and uncanny, cool stuff really. Great rendering too, I would love to see this one in a game.

nJoo, Great idea and nice execution, I love the little webs on its legs/bones, nice and simple approach to the subject, and very functional one, but... How does it walks? The description says that it hides, but how does it moves, since its legs looks like bones?
Anyway, other than this, its a great design and execution. My favorite for sure.

Moai, Great execution and a very good entry, good backstory too. But design-wise I think it looks more like a "normal Lizard" than really someone who feeds on sound. But great entry, anyway!

Tonic: I really liked your concept but the coloring of your pic doesn't make any sense to me. To me the brown and blue are all over. I can see that the blue is coming from the left but it's not looking like light for me more like color of the skin and then it's just confusing. Great as camouflage but... Anyway that's my crit I hope it can help.

Hard pick....lots of cool entries, but my vote went to Kfeeras It is a nice design that felt plausible to me. I can imagine this thing in my mind swimming around the ocean in a very eel like fashion capturing sound from vent holes and other ocean phenomenon.

Lander - Interesting concept. I was especially drawn to the shell like humps on his back.

Scorge - Very unique. Love the shapes of those sound capturing devices on his back. Nice rendering.

Njoo - CRAZY wild concept, and beautifully rendered. I love the concept, but that dangling organ just looks so vulnerable to getting snagged on a rock and strung across the desert. Very cool though.

Moai - Really nice creature, beautiful job on the rendering...definitely worth the wait. I love everything about him but the mouth....I keep wanting something else than a conventional mouth. Very cool though as well.

:az::au::ap::az::au::ap: - I love it! Everything about it seems so bizarre yet believable! and the style rocks too! Got my vote!
chrislomaka - I think the simple design works well, maybe next time you can post a bigger pic and throw in more details, it'd rock!
gnahz - It looks like a cyborg animal hehe, I like the hollow tail tracking sound idea
Kfeeras - I think the design is really cool actaully, personally I think without the vent at the front it'll be even stronger, it looks a bit like a machine with the vent
F-O-X - Not sure if it's intended but the head looks like a penis and the ear/wing looks like an anus... haha I like the simple description sketch you had on the side tho, it's like a comic strip.
Paul Kang - I think cuz of the rendering it looks a little bit flat, but the sihoulette's nice tho!
tex tin star - I like the design~! Other then the head, it was a little bit hard to read because of the blacks i think
spazizoner - It's one of the more unique design outta the patch, the concept and explanation's really cool!
Michael Jaecks - I think since the beginning of my first COW, ur art has been getting cleaner and cleaner, the rendering's reallly tight! The long filament is a really nice touch! (does the creature just floats in the air?)
yannertastic - Love the style! (a fan of ur work!) The design's bizarre and cute at the same time, looking forward to see more of ur c.o.w!
benu - I like the design! It looks like it can probablly swallow whale instead of just munching on sound haha
Arekkusu - The sihoulette's nice and the description too~ but maybe the design's a little too mech/add-on?
freekwhensee - Haha I actually had a similar idea before of a critter that lives in/around the ear~! Future bluetooth!
Relic - Might be off topic, but I have a hat that looks like it, got it at a convention few years back, it's a dinosaur hat ;P fun design!!
Tommoy - Really like the design and rendering, probably my 2nd choice, i like the face/teeth part right behind the mouth most!
gmblfdz - It's really cute design! The lighting is really nicely done, almost look like a stuff toy sitting on the table!
Lander - Looks like a mutated hippo! I like how the scene tells a story, and the description goes well with it~
Tonic - I remember seeing the bw line drawing version, I think i perfered that one a bit more, but the concept's interesting, personally I think the head at the top's not needed, and might look even stronger in design if it's like a tail instead.
daveneale - Your super clean style's always a pleasure to look at! Really cute and design creature
sp00t - Tell me honestly where you looking at some naughty reference when designing this haha! The design and shape's interesting, not too sure of the color tho
()nion - I thought it was an elephant mooning his butt at me haha, fun drawing!
scorge - Really nice render and design, I think maybe you rushed it a tiny bit for the feet and sky? :D Really like the head and the stomach area!
monotony - Nice simple design~ It can probably step on the leaves himself and feast on the sound :D
Azathoth - Something about the head looks bizarre and freaky :) Would be nice to read a descriptiong too!
Moai - The simplicity's really nice, I really really dig the mouth area, the cast shadow is too awesome and gives it a really nice touch! A really believable concept!

arekkusu-i love how full into the detial of how that animal works down to the radar malfuntion due to radiation, really great, would have like to see it in color though but you got a solid foundation
