[ It might also have some chainsawing or scissoring devices, I suppose... ]
[ ...But, the main focus'll be on these weird rake-like, or... hmm... fork-like, hook-like... claws. ]

spent a few hours on this one
not happy with the result, since i did it really light at first, had to make it much darker and sort of ruined it...
well you learn from your own mistakes i guess

& well it can slash and hack as well as squeeze - just felt like adding a bit of meaty loving to my DSG today. (sorry: I've been doing wall texture concepts for far too long to play by all the rules)

dan liimatta - awesome treehugging. I love the 'intestine'.
goran - great mood and drama.
brewin - you could add some lighter values detailing the body to make it more interesting

I had two versions of this, one with black lines, one without. I prefered the one without.
The rendering is kinda basic but I still like it. It took me about 2 or 3 hours.
There were also supposed to be a few red leaves but I didn't add them.
As usual, crits more than welcome
AlaForest Cool design but really could have used more details, even if it's just pencil and paper
Brewin Same here, a bit simple. Also, I don't really see neither the claw part nor the tree-cutting part well. I like his chimney thingies though.
Goran Impressive rendering. I like the light coming out of the treetops. Also, the angled view adds a great sense of depth to the whole thing.
Dan liimata I really love your rendering/coloring style. Also, the claws are very cool. I also like the way he carries the tree. What's with that sluggy thing under the tree trunk??
Funnyface Pretty cool overall, but I feel the main emphasis/focus on the robot is deviated somehow. Can't tell why though, maybe someone will.
Mysterian Great sense of depth and perspective with the claw in the front. Like the big light in the front too

goran - Beautiful colors and awesome brush work as usual.
dan liimatta - I love the comic/cartoon feel of yours, very cool.
FunnyFace - Your colors are like a beautiful contrast to goran's - great design on the robot too.
Mysterian - As usual, great work. He looks like he came from the same Assembly Line as your Bone-Bot. :)
Here's my entry - about 1hr and I tried to go with a more relaxed and messy approach. I wanted my dude to be like The Iron Giant. :D

I've done some DSGs before, but this is the first time i've posted one.
It wasn't until i was done that i realized that you really can't see the "rake-like" claws well, and that none of my robots were actually smashing any trees.
There is the DSG, then two Concept pages that aren't very in-depth at all. Sorry about the bad scan quality. The scanner is packed, so all i have atm is an all-in-one. Anyhoo: Big robots thrashing a forest:

This topic had awesome entries written all over it.
Goran – Sweet stuff, rich and vivid environment.
Dan Liimatta – very awesome and brought forth a smile instantly, Big hulking robot squeezing the crap out of alien trees. A+
Funny Face – Great colours and lighting, moody image.
Mysterian – Great stuff again. Nice atmosphere and story in this one. Thanks for sharing the process!
XXItheworld – A good start here. While everyting reads well already, I’d say what you need to do to go further here is to decide on a lightsource and add shadows and highlights accordingly to get out of the “flat” look.
NeechMonkey – I always like those muted palette images, the scale of the giant robot gets a bit confusing when he’s right there on the horizon line. Nice lighting.
Quinn Simoes – Cool robot and nice contrasts here. Looks like some sort of doomsday logging machine :] Good work on the highlights suggesting metal.
Galaxis – Woah, looks very dreamy and surreal. I can make out the “face” of the robot but after that it gets a little confusing. Welcome to the DSG.

There are some stunning creations in here.
Peg, Mysterian, Goran, dan liimatta: Those are my favorites. I'm really enjoying the bot design and mood.
Tommoy
September 3rd, 2008, 09:38 AM
Peg: very nice colors and admosphere, cool robot, maybe some action of ripping away a tree would give is more power.
Galaxis: I think there are a bit too much loose elements, the head and parts of the claw are clear but further behind it gets messy. On the other hand the use of these brushes(?) give it a nice style.
Quinn Simoes: creepy and fantastic looking robot, great claw design.
Neechmonkey: it certainly has the iron giant effect. But why is the space before him already treefree?
XXITtheworld: this robot cleared the path nicely. The perspective of the robot needs attention, and I'm missing a lightsource/shadoweffects.
Mysterian: superb, just superb.
Funnyface: awesome robot, nice colors, the burning tree is a good effect.
Dan Liimata: sweet, this one is funny too.
Goran: very nice, I only wish the bot would be a bit closer to the viewer.

Quinn- The search light eyes are a nice touch
Galaxis- That's certainly a different approach to robots, and I find it refreshing.

quick one it's not too well defined (especially the hand holding the tree) and I had trouble with the lighting. BUTHEYY that is what practice is for
and pssst I'd really love some criticism if anyone has the time
http://img352.imageshack.us/img352/8749/ieatedurtreewu0.jpg
ALaForest: took me a while to work out what was going on here, given the fact that a lot of the arm is covered by tree. also, I could just be being a little slow today. I like the design, though. always good to see a tree eating machine :D nice
brewin: be nice to see some more defined shapes, but this is sinister looking stuff! those are some smouldering eyes
goran: badaaaass atmosphere. loving the swampy colours
dan liimatta: awesome tree goop! those are some fierce claws
FunnyFace[b]: sweet work. the added light source of BURNING TRREEE is a nice touch
[b]XXITheWorld: I love your robot design and your trees look pretty good. try adding more details in the foreground and background (your horizon looks pretty empty) and try playing with some angles to give your robot a proper sense of massiveness! :D keep it up man
Peg: I love the fog and the lethal looking scissor fingers (that bot could do some sweet things with topiary)
ChillPepper: a-are those laser beams? sweet. the debris coming off those trees is my favourite bit
Tommoy: the perspective in this really enhances the sense of action. lovely looking leaves too, though I think maybe it's the undefined shape of the trees leaves me wondering how big your mechanic monster is?

As you can tell I'm more into creatures than robots. Did get bored after doing the robot, shocking little tree.
lto: great atmosphere and movement
Tommoy: great style, any tips would be appreciated. lovin the trees.
Peg: damn gud as always
mysterian: cool bot and composition. Do I spy a little bear dude frm star wars?

I really appreciated to see lot of quality work around here.
good job, everyone.
For me,I prefer to design him a little bit retro-look. Victorian machine, something.
http://i527.photobucket.com/albums/cc351/psychobang64/TinWoodman.jpg
My favorite one so far might be dan liimatta's very crazy tree-hugging bot and I freaking love your bunny. Clean and clear coloring.
Goran : Nice environment. I wish I could see closer look and detail of the Robot.
FunnyFace Interesting warm color enviroment, nice design.
Mysterian Perfect, man. Perfect. Good sense of depth and perspective. I love when your put small things like small creature in foreground, vines it make more sense and feeling of deep-unexplored forest.
Peg Very effective fog-like atmosphere. Your choice of color make your robot very outstanding. I personally love the design of robot head!
Tommoy We got some action here!! Great idea to put him in real action. Your rake-like claws design is unique and I love it.
Sorry for my english,Duh!

Honestly, I have only tried one other DSG and quit half way through. Now, I refuse to quit, however I know when to stop when I know that I cannot make it any better with the concept that I have working.
I am new to the whole "painting on photoshop" and last time I worked with a tablet, I was uncomfortable with that. This time I worked totally with my mouse (oh noes?) but then again I suppose it doesnt matter how the work gets done unless it gets done.
In all honesty, im not looking for critique. I know this is horrible work from myself. I am more of a traditional artist via pad and graphite or charcoal... but I have got to get working on this digital stuff to overall better myself. Therefore, I am posting this in regards to a reference so that one day I can look back on it and say "lol me, you used a burn tool and drew disproportionately" -- that, of course, could be no short of the truth.
