Hey everybody, I was wondering where I can get a non-photo blue pen, not a pencil, but a ball-point pen. I know I had one years ago that I got in either some drafting class or art class. I can't find one anywhere on the web, and I must have one! Can anybody help me?

As of late, with digital scanning and image manipulation, non-photo blue fulfills its function in a different way. The artist can do his sketch and inking in the traditional method and scan the page. Most scanners will detect the light blue lines. However by shifting to greyscale and increasing the contrast and brightness the blue will disappear. Depending on the scanner and settings this exact process may be different for each user, but the concept remains the same. The difference between the non-photo blue and black ink is vast enough that digital image manipulation can separate the two easily. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Non-photo_blue)

Those are great to work with, but it isn't a ball point pen. I haven't seen a non photo blue ball point in years (although I haven't actively been looking for one either).

What I do is draw with a regular pen, scan it, convert all of the line work to that non photo bluish color, and print it out. When it prints it isn't reeeaaally non photo blue in that if you were working with photographing it with actual film I doubt it would knock out, but it works just fine for MY process. What I basicly do is print my initial sketches and thumbnails at the final size I want it to be, printing in that light blue. Then I draw my refined sketch over it in regular pencil or black ink. I can then scan in my final sketch and easily block out the blue by just selecting the blue channel.

Of course it doesn't really HAVE to be blue. It can be pretty much any color that stands out, but it takes more work to knock out most other colors.

Thanks guys. I knew I could just scan it in and no matter what color i was using, it would work the same. I just prefer the old school way of doing things I guess.

Lyons: I'll check that too.

This looks pretty close to a non-photo blue ballpoint:
