See Carl Dobsky's work on the home page for examples... but how can you get textured paintings with the software without using some canned filter effects? All the brushes appear to smooth. Real life brushes, the bristles can seperate making marks with the hairs. Digital spreads fake paint like markers. How do I make the strokes more realistic?

Hi Jason,

This tutorial, written for Painter IX.5 and good for Painter X as well, won't answer all of your questions, but it'll give you some ideas to start with:

Scratching the Surface: An Introduction to Textures in Corel® Painter™ (http://apps.corel.com/painterix/training/tutorial_textures.html?trkid=tpc1106ft)

Then you might want to spend some time studying Painter's Brush Controls:

Painter X Help > Help Topics > Contents tab > Customizing Brushes
