REALLLLLLLLLLLLY OLD
Hey CA, Ill introduce myself I'm a 16 yr old kid living down under, my dream is to be a concept artist when I finish my education or at least have an occupation that has something to do with art. Ive been a lurker for awhile and finally decided to start my own sketchbook
Here is my very first attempt at digital art, finally pushed my self to try it out and its probably the most fun Ive had with art in a long time. It's a colour study using a ref, I made the mistake of using a semi low resolution and it came back and bit me on the arse when I was detailing the face and hands. Tomorrow I should upload a few other pencil sketches
Crits are appreciated

The standing lady could use some help anatomically. Legs are off.
Try some studies with simple objects to get the hang of color, light, and just the way digital painting works. I'm pretty sure the official starter subject in digital painting here at ConceptArt is the apple, haha.

i say to continue with the quick studies, they look very nice. experiment with different line styles with your pencil, and possibly use even more darks that you already do, to up the contrast.
keep it up!

The trick I will tel you is observe detail 24/7. When you walk in the street, look at people walking, standing, try to figure out there bone, there muscle. Look at light, face detail, eyes direction. Alway be aware of what it's around you. Then put on paper what you saw. then look as ref, anatomy, light test to reproduce what is in your mind.
and....practice practice practice.

One study, one WIP concept of some random alien, and my 'pop art sculpture' which I had to make for school. The sculpture is made out of cardboard, newspaper and tissue paper.
Just for kicks here's a background for the alien.
Flirons are a god like race. They have unimaginable power, fueled by the small sun like entity occupying their skull. This entity is in itself a natural fusion reactor like a sun and is what gives the Flirons their power. Because of this Flirons need no food, no water and especially no sleep.

I've uploaded some pics of my 'postmodern' sculpture(sorta based on a crab) I had to do for my art class, its made out of 18 coke cans for the legs, a fishing reel for the body, chicken wire for the claws and three rods for the leg structure. It was a battle making those coke can legs, my hands look more spliced up than an emos after their mum told them to stop using all her mascara. Even though it was relatively fun making this sculpture I'd prefer to do some more traditional stuff for a change. The other upload is just a new digital study using a ref of course(I would blend it more, but I want to continue on something else).
edit: reworked the study a bit, I'm so frustrated with it I'm just going to leave it for now

Elwells quote today You don't "make the jump." You work on both at the same time. If you wait until you are "ready," you may never be. is amazing advice, i never really tried to much from imagination work after I did studies, so i did some today and realized I had a lot of work in front of me. Here are some more bridgman studies, no ref drawings are worthy enough yet.

I nearly missed the ‘and’, and thought you were referring to yourself when you wrote ‘a little plasticine monster head which is 4 cm big’. Pretty good SP even if you have a squished nose.
On your pencil drawings, if you make the outline very feint and then shade up to it, you might get even better results.

Fraz
December 23rd, 2008, 12:38 PM
Cool. Nice feet studies, I need to do them too! :)
One thing about your drawing as a whole, try to get some structure and 3d-ness to them. Right now they look quite flat and have no planes.
Remember the forms, that is what studies are there for.
It is a 3d object, treat it as one. Particularily on your last page, you need to pay more attention to the rotation instead of just squishing in the features (pecks mainly) as that is mainly why it looks flat.
Pay attention to the width of the arms and legs compared to the torso.
I dunno if you are, but read bridgman as you are going along. He talks about the hips ribcage and head and how they are solid, and that they are the whole reason that figures react the way that they do.
Sorry if I seem harsh or anything negative, just trying to pass along info that I have learned.
Dilated
December 25th, 2008, 09:08 AM
Fraz Yeah man thanks, its not harsh at all it helps me look at my errors more closely and yeah i really need to work on my 3d'ness.

Fraz
December 28th, 2008, 02:28 PM
Cool stuff man, my main concern is that there is no distinguishable light source in the second, thus making it look flat and fake. In the first, you have a light source, but have done everything like it was rounded or a cylinder, including the face. You need to pay attention to forms, especially in the face, as if you have a bad face, it will reduce the quality of the whole piece dramatically.
They seem quite static also. Try to make the poses a bit more interesting and dynamic, maybe have some foreshortening to make it look more cinematic.
Keep trying dude!
Dilated
December 30th, 2008, 11:35 PM
Fraz yeah I had trouble applying light to the second one, i was trying to apply the light so it looked like it was coming from the right side, but obviously failed, It was rushed a bit because of the deadline, I might go back and fix it up more.
Yeah its a bad face, I'll soon start a big study on heads soon.
Yeah I also need to work on my pose's too, pretty much need to work on everything lol.

Hey man nice sp, it is a lot harder than it looks, ive not managed to push one as far as yours without getting pissed with it yet :P
i was thinking about what you said about wanting a differnt rendering style, maybe you should try a differnt medium and then come back to pencil after, maybe charcoal.
but i think that because we use wood pencils(well i assume you do) we cant get that same texture as other artists get with mechanical pencils, what you think?
zelda_geek
January 4th, 2009, 07:25 AM
You should sharpen your pencil more often and/or draw bigger, it will make it look a lot cleaner. An other thing is that you must not forget to add the cast shadow on the ground. It can really help ground the characters. Keep practice and study everything!:D
Fraz
January 5th, 2009, 02:33 PM
Nice SP, and yeah, draw bigger and try get everything to look smoother and not as textured. Try shading a large gradient as smooth as you can and see how it looks!

I like your clothing studies, particularly the one in the middle, reminds me of a girl I went to college with. The proportions of the first 2 are great. The 3rd one along looks a bit masculine on her upper half, but that could be due to the garments she is wearing.
I like your character concepts too. Like someone else mentioned the coloured character's lighting makes it feel flat and the pose looks like she is saying to a photographer;
"What? You want me to hold them up...like this?"
Though her face I find has good characteristics. Feels like a real character.
PieMonster
January 7th, 2009, 04:13 PM
Good stuff here, good studies man, keep doing those! You have some proportion issues in many of your figures, mainly that they have too short legs. You should have a look at Loomis' books (http://acid.noobgrinder.com/Loomis/), and do some studies if you haven't already.
Keep working, dude! :)

Hey man, fantastic that you're doing your Bridgman and Loomis, it's already started to show up in your other work! From what I can tell, the one thing you're lacking is that you're still not putting quite enough rhythm and movement into the figures- even when moving, they're a bit stiff. Keep practicing those mannequins in Loomis, they'll help you loads.

For your digipaint, some of the lines are off. The chin is slightly to the right of the center line, and the nose mouth and eyes are at different angles.
You can see by this:
http://img232.imageshack.us/img232/7158/linesssslw5.jpg
Your main fault are noses and lips. With the lips you can't see the edge nearly as clearly as what you have done. In parts they fade in quite gradually.
On noses, get some bridgman studies for them.
Nice stuff. :)

January 15th, 2009, 07:52 AM

kidult exactly right man thanks.
alright pretty lazy today but I did like my 1st "study" acrylic painting, very hard to work with took me awhile to realize how acrylic flows, blends etc but I learnt alot from this even if the product is a heap. I realise now why oils are the more preferred choice when it comes to more detailed paintings, fighting against acrylic drying is not a fun thing.
Fraz

With the lips you have too distinct of a border between the lips and the face. The lips are part of the face, but are just slightly different coloured and are planes on the face.
With the new one, nice to see you experimenting.
The butt goes into the legs all wrong though, there it looks like there is no ass, just a fat leg. The leg is also fatter than the ribcage.

There is some Bridgeman books in the free ebook thread somewhere in the referance section.
Bridgeman has a funny way of installing a mental form trick, Sometimes the way someone write, when you read it the mind latches on to it.
It's like drawing on a flat page but it feels as if your pencil tip is going off into the distance stating contour in 3d space. I like it when that happens and lucky it happens more and more lately.
Another thing to just make it come out sometimes is to know that what you draw is on the page before you draw it. You are just making it come out so that others can see it too.
I draw a quick warmup sphere just to get it back when I draw. I see the cue ball sitting on the billiards table there, I just need to state it. Even though the spere makes a contour of a perfect 2d circle the mind makes it feel like the pencil is in space somewhere working on something that has dimention.
Sounds stupid but it's a subtle thing that comes and goes unless you make a habit of getting it at will.
I noticed from your muscle studies, especially those direct front, side and back studies, those muscle studies are a quick way the mind usually get's pulled into 2d and end up drawing on the surface of the page. I will give that another try, my studies were mostly flat too.
Line and fluidity you could try listening to some Baroque classical music, music seems to trigger those stuffs. It's hard listening to korn and draw fluid beutifull lines at the same time, maybe for some aggressive shading, some fast paced action music.
Listen to some Queen :P as an example and notice how tidy and musically beutifull his singing is, compare that to line work in drawing.
Baroque is great, I don't intentionally do this but the radio played some last night and I noticed how carefull I was at shading and drawing an ear out of hogarth's books. It slows you down and makes you feel your lines.

Off topic but just for interest sake.
Queen was quite the concept artist, a lyrical one.
Killer Queen: Some female character, lethal but quaint.
Another one bites the dust: Some "shooter" character out to kill with his machene gun
He also did themes for character concept like flash gordon and he did that awesome song for the Highlander series, Born to be kings I think.
Really an inspirational artist. The musical avenue really has potential because the more stuff you build around your characters or concepts the better they become(en-Rich!!). and you can use them, for when you draw maybe, when you draw a shooter character that song really sets the mood. So having a goal and a music collection could be a concept artist asset.
The babbling continues...
Highlander was a cool theme, they got to shoot a crap load of hot babes or dudes and they flashed back into times past and got to dress them in all kinds of freaky clothings.

zaor: Hey man thanks for the long comment, even though it sometimes felt you were talking to yourself lol :P.
I'am starting to try to think 3 dimensional when I draw but not so succesfull yet.
Yeah queen is an amazing band I've been listening to it lately, with a combination of rap and metal. You have an interesting take on music but most of the time when I do my art I dont pay attention to the music playing and it normally doesnt effect me.
AlexTooth Thanks man, yeah hopefully these daily's will help us lol.
Janos Cheers, Yeah I'm having a problem with fluidity hopefully I will overcome it, any tips?
Fraz Cheers man, and yeah need to get things like the hand more accurate.
Alright heres a master study which was harder than usual of some French artist which I grabbed from the great artist thread (Im sorry I didnt remember the name its probably sacrilage lol) I will do a couple more of these tomorrow.

Fraz,
Put some strain on your memory.
Draw a study picture, then right after try to recreate it from the mind. You can peek if you hit a blank, but when you finish, start over until you can draw the object without peeking and when you feel that you have memorized the components that was necessary.
Then draw the same object two days later and see how well the stuff stuck. Soon you will have built a learning strategy and will find yourself playing with what you learn while you are doing studies. You will get a sense for the amount of proficiency you need to take it into next week. ;)
Might slow a study down a bit but it will make them worth while, even if you feel you need foundations, spend some time and discipline getting what you see as foundations right until you know you have it, instead of hoping they will slot themselves after months of quick sweeping. Otherwise your drawing will end up like my guitar playing. After four years now I am only starting to get the basics but that turns out to be the essentials, and because I spent such a long time doing other stuff, It's harder to unlearn my incorrect habits than to get the basics right. Style comes later, just like a guitarist's style... It's the way you drive after you have learnt to drive or the way you sing after you have learnt to sing.
Don't let go of something untill you are happy with it. Don't tire yourself, and give yourself time, you are not a machene, It takes a few winks, breaks and revisits to make stuff permanent, so there is lots of time inbetween to do other studies or playing with other aspects, just aslong as you get a strategy for yourself that works.

February 17th, 2009, 07:48 AM
Just some avice on your photoshop piece in the last post.
(1) Colours interact with each other and overlap in some places where one reflects on the other for example. Some yellow of the stockings will reflect on the shoes, not making them yellow but warmer in the area affeted. Or some blue on the stockings.
(2) Try not to use white or black to highlight or shade a colour. Its not that easy... The surrounding affects the colours, and in a colourless surrounding you will just have to come up with an alternative. White highlights look very plastic and unpleasing.
(3) push your values a lot more to really bring forth the form of the clothes.
CHeers and think about my advice for the next time.

It's been like 2 days and you expect improvement in the SPs, just be patient. Don't measure improvement on likeness either, but on the quality of line, rendering, structure etc. The enviro looks cool, but remember that trees aren't always green, especially with that sky, the light wouldn't be strong enough to make such a saturated green. Great work, keep it up :)

I think you should try to set clearer areas of light and shadow. and push the contrast a bit. a good exercise would be to do a black&white SP. and I mean only black and white: black for shadow, obviously and (leave) white for light. Itll force you to decide where the light really hits an object:)

hmm. your imaginative stuff is a bit lacking compared to your study, but thats only natural and if you keep doing these, you'll improve. simple.:)
and if you look at one of your figures from mind, and feel that anatomy is wrong, hit up ref and try to correct it. of course you wont do that with all your figs but you could say, that…dunno, maybe correct 5 figs from mind per week using ref (?) just thinking
take care!
SamC
February 28th, 2009, 06:07 AM
It's not the anatomy that's wrong in your imagination stuff, the muscles are very good, it's just proportion. You're ending the biceps at the pecks (2 heads), when it should end a little above the bellybutton (3 heads) and the wrist should be at the groin (4 heads.) It pays to learn loomis head proportion landmarks. Try to do measurements on your imagination stuff to start with as well until you can do it from sight. Keep it up.

Yeah I think you can probably tell from the studies and stuff, but you can avoid stiffness by playing with rotation and movement of the rib cage, and the shoulder and hip lines inverting. For instance, stand on one foot and see how your shoulder and hips sort of go like this > or < depending on which foot. This generally gives a sense of balance to your stuff. Try it out, and keep it up, you're doing great.

When I was listing through your sketchbook I told myself: "pretty good faces this man is drawing."
BUT when I came to the very end where your oil paintings is shown, my jaw fell down on the floor and I just told myself: "what the...? His THIRT oil an it's such fucking great!"
these are my words

Nrx Thanks a lot man :D, Yeah my sp drawings aren't so strong.. yet but I tried to push the values more these latest sp's hopefully it will get better.
Kalim Cheers man, really appreciate taking the time to look through, and don't worry more oils to eventually come
alrighty pretty big update I guess...
anyway here's all my sp's since last update, a page of imagination scribbles (getting more fun now), some designs that I was playing with for a tattoo design but they seem like more orientated to a shirt design, and a hand from life study to use for a later design and thats it.
GODDAMMIT the scanner raped the designs

Most of these drawings(not sp's and neither the chick with the smiley) I showcased to my local tattoo shop, I also included my two latest paintings in the portfolio. They were pretty impressed and they want to introduce me to a guy who sells tattoo designs all around the country and in the states. They also wanted me to come in and watch them and eventually tattoo for them :D. It sure would beat working at K-mart. The great thing about it, it wont conflict with me attending high school.
If you cbf reading I'm just extremely happy. :D

Mr. Phil Cheers man.
Finally I have updated, exams and school has been hectic, but 14 or so weeks left of this shit, then I can finally concentrate on art. I haven't posted everything I've done but its still shame full for this time, alas I have two weeks of holiday now which will consist of
Black swan potraiture competition
Yearbook diary cover
School major painting
Possibly painting for my brothers house
and just huge amount of drawing mixed with school study -_-.
Now these updates mostly consist of school drawings leading up to my painting and THAT DISGUSTING DRAWING OF FLIES IS SUPPOSED TO REFLECT ON DADA so dont go judging me ahaha.
Also the caricature is of my art teacher, apart of a series for the yearbook.

Its been awhile since I've posted, I've just finished the first semester of my uni course and so far its been great fun, here are a few things that I have done.
The Barbarian stickers are supposed to be influenced by Frank Frazetta, was done for a main project of one unit.
The other characters and weapons were done for a game design unit.
The Mario Animation was my first go at hand animated something, was good fun.
The Sci Building was for one unit which you had to reinterpret your chosen space (mine was a boardwalk)
(Mario animation doesn't want to upload properly so i deleted it)
Now back to working my ass off on holidays.

I've been hiding for a while and trying to improve, its second year in my illustration degree and I think I need to take everything to the next step. Possibly posting ever week to force myself to make finished work. enough of my thoughts.
First image is a mock up sci fi comic book cover for uni
Second is a illustration for uni portraying suspense
Third is an editorial illustration representing a sci fi article
Fourth is a life study
Fifth is a Phil Hale study
Sixthis a bad picture of my oil painting, realllllllllly bad at mixing co lours from life, something I need to work on.
And last is a bunch of sketches from my travel sketchbook

hey dude, good improvments ! I think you should try to not think about what is this value, and what is this one, but more about the general lights and shadow . For know, you shouldn't try toreproduce the exact same value, or it'd suck, but just think about getting good volumes with values, even if the contrast is a bit exagerrated, think about how the light is coming from, about the main shadows areas, you should squint, to see simplified values, or you could get easily lost in the amount of details ! It's the same for the features you're painting, it's like you painted them without relationships with the whole face, they seems unattached from the head ! try to understand the volume around the eyes to better paint it, and you should always understand something before painting it,because for someone who truly understand these stuff, he'll directly see if you understood or not ! So keep working and keep posting, i'm glad to see some stuff from you !

Sketches for development of my comic project
The second last bad boy is an illustration for a punk themed article for uni, I'm thinking of going for the half rendered and half graphic look because I have to make 10 of them in 3 weeks.

I noticed that in almost all of your paintings the lighting is very diffuse.
Considering thats probably the hardest light to master you should try to paint some sceneries with more defined light sources. This way you can control your values more easily.

Pretty much everything that I've done for uni this year. First stuff is concept art for a made up 2d side scroller which I made into a book for Uni project. More concept art for another more serious sci fi rpg and a bunch of misc comic book covers.

those robot forms are awesome, i really like thelarge purple masses with the small figure in the front as well. youre killin it! awesome! one small thing i noticed in the palm tree one would be to vary the sizes/shapes of the trees a little, make them less uniform. perhaps having them recede a little would help some too. anyway keep it up! waiting on the next update! :)

Sycra Hey thanks man!
Some more stuff, trying to slow down and break things down this time around. Started to try to apply the studies. I failed pretty hard with these however its allowed me to see the huge holes in my work process and knowledge. Also I need to make applications which gears towards what I want to do rather than just painting a dude in a suit....
The mech was done to apply a previous life study and the frog will be for a creature design.

Good stuff lately!
Impressive amount of studies, what you should do though, is really focus on applying what you learn in those studies to improve your own stuff. I can tell you're doing it already, but really focus on how faces are put together and stuff. Focusing on the nuances and such that make up a face will really help you in the long run, when making realistic heads. Sorry if I'm being really obvious here.
Keep at it man, you're definitely improving loads. Just try to really absorb what you're studying and apply it to your imaginary stuff!
