Hello dear Reader, =P
Learning to draw.
Aiming to do freelance work.
Posting every week.
Drawing every day.
I hope this thread will keep me motivated to update weekly and work as a small archive of some kind.
Those are images from my first sketchbook.
Right now I'm learning the anatomy of the human body.

Realized that 1 hour per day is by far not enough:
if 10000 hours are needed for professional work and I draw 8 hours per day than its 1250 days ergo 3,5 years...

One thing I dislike: he gives you all-done, simplified anatomy to learn. Thats the reason I first learned the skeleton and all the major surface muscles and simplified it myself so that I never forget =P
The other stuff he has is still way beyond me so I'll look into it, Danke!

Thx Grafguy.
Looked through the KChen stuff, was interesting. Took with me the
VHASP as a quick abbrievation for priorities while checking accuracy of the drawing from observation:
- Vertical - placemnet
- Horizontal - same as above
- Angles - parts relating to each other
- Shape - negative if needed
- Proportion - last because observation (the 4 above) should be developed first and then experience should take over
teh horror -.-

looks like you just hit an epiphany of sorts - starting to draw tonally, like in you last image (awesome)... seems like you've done a lot of anatomy homework, I think you're definitely ready to move on to;
A. drawing tonally... it helps to start out on some toned paper... anything not white nor black... but ok, if you want to stay within your milky white sketchbook... just establish an even medium tone by going over the entire figure with the side of your pencil... then you have a base to either go darker with, or use your eraser to establish highlights.
B. Draw from life. If noone is available to sit there for you for whaterever amount of time that you need... just gather together some inanimate objects... it really is a whole other animal to draw from life - highly useful.
C. Have some fun:)
Good stuff - keep at it.

I had to look up epiphany =P I wouldnt call it that but hey.. thx ^^
A. doing it already (establishing an even tone) , i have to buy a small enough eraser for the highlights... -.-
B. gotta try
C. yeah, but how? i think porn is the only thing i really like to draw xD

What I am working right now is consistent value. So if light hits a surface at 45 degrees, all surfaces at 45 have the same value. It is kinda hard on round surfaces... Also trying to consistently create sexy stylised female faces from full front and searching for nice poses...
took an old shoe and gave it a little volume and fucked around with eyeform and emotions conveyed by it

Hi Paranoid, you are doing some good exercices! I would sugges do do some more perspective exercices, like boxes and cylinders. Try to focus on suggesting volume with your linework (by varying thickness etc). That will eventualy improve your figure drawing. Hope this helps!

That was true. But I managed. Stopped drawing for half a year just to be sure to make it in the first semester. Average of 2,4. Not bad. :mod:
Been drawing in the second semester on and off. But now can invest a little more time since the math got easier.
So this is what I did some fucked up night. Its shitty alright but I like the flower.

nice to see someone reviving his sketchbook, although i never saw it before :P
The face drawings you made in your last post before dropping this SB look kind of nice, especially the guy who looks like stalin ;)
Try to do some portraits like those, and lets see how your pencil skills changed since then ;)

They sure improved in 6 month full of differential equations =P
First steps into the colors realm. Dangerous and exciting =P
I dont get how to paint. Sounds retarded. And it is... But I figured that flat color wont do. So experimented with Painter blenders to choose the ones I like.
http://i484.photobucket.com/albums/rr209/dsj89ff/post21/painter-10-blenders.jpg
Got some ref and tried to colorpick (value and hue and saturation) by hand and than with the tool. It was a disaster. I must say, now I can see how hard it actually is to differentiate colors...
http://i484.photobucket.com/albums/rr209/dsj89ff/post21/lips-color-study.jpg
Start out easy:
http://i484.photobucket.com/albums/rr209/dsj89ff/post21/sphere.jpg
It turned out that colors are complicated... Darker means more saturated. Who would have known? Turns out there is a hue shift depending on intensity. For example low intesity red goes torward yellow and then white...

showing improvement, paran0id!
try to empty your head of preconceived notions of "how things should look" when you're studying / drawing from reference. for instance, most of your eyes share that typical almond hieroglyph style....look closer at the reality of things:)

I started to do some poses but those from posemaniacs are just to emotionless. You wont use them imho. So I went there (http://www.comicartcommunity.com/gallery/index.php) and picked those I like.

wow buddy nice improvment ! lol nice refs ( especially for the lips and the big boobs girl :p ) Anyway, try to work more on your brushstroke, you have a good sense of edge, but it's like you're using too much strokes for nothing ! just begin with big strokes, but really big ones, and then decrease the brush size and me more accurate each time! Keep at it !

You're making progress, no doubt about it. And you're approaching painting in a very ... mathematical way breaking down the components into measurable parts. I can in some ways relate to that and it looks like it's helping you a lot.
My only comment is that when you do your highlights and shadows, go easy on the pure white and black. The toy car that has ended up in the potted plant would look so much better if the highlights had more yellow and a slight red tint in them.

(warum immer nationalsozialisten?). also ich meine du bist aufn guten weg, arbeitest ja auch fleißig daran. cool is auch das du immer das referenzfoto dazu zeigst - die unterschiede werden immer kleiner, teilweise kaum sichtbar. keine ahnung was man noch sagen soll, einfach weitermachen...

Wanted to make the eyes even bigger than in ref. Done. Fucked up the values... again. Fail.
http://i484.photobucket.com/albums/rr209/dsj89ff/post31/face20_001.jpg
Values in fa(e)ces shit as always. Colored trying the "color layer" method. Horrible. Didnt care about likeness. I think, from now on, if the values dont match, I'll trace it over and colorpick just to learn where the mistakes are.

This delighful lady is the most influential woman in the kingdoms.
For she is the head concubine of the patriarch and his favorite one.
The public agrees that she has the prettiest nose around and is the
prime example of the success of Dr Blarghs selective breeding.

Fucking awesome movie, it would take millions of Transhiters and Batshits to even come close to movies like these.

Hey, awesome stuff dude!
I love the painted film frames, oh and of course the ladies :)
Possibly squint your eyes to get a better idea of value and hues.
Thanks for stopping by my SB.
Rock on.

Thank you. I like the film frames too. Self :assspank:
Squinting eyes helps with the values. Less so with hues. I tried. A lot... =P
Its been a bad week.
Very quick drapery tests. Gonna do a long one later.

Now that one was fucking hard. Ref not shown because it makes me feel bad. Most time spent with the line art, trying for good likeness. Angles, size, proportion, everything for 4 faces. It was horrible. It still is.

Hey man, you've been doing well with your value and color studies, and really pushing out the work. Perhaps do some more life paintings or maybe fit in just a bit more imaginative work?
Its been about 3 months, don't stop, keep it up!
