I kind of went with a semi fantasy element, making the Oxygen King sort of like Zeus, or some kind of King of Air. He just decided the fate of the mountain climber dude.

Got idea of King - president of huge wealthy corporation selling air in cans to planet Spaceball (Spaceballs movie).
Then it turned into sort of trader with oxygen in post-apo environment where only chance to survive longer is to keep buying that shit from him.http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh16/3ex/Digital%20painting/dsg1400.jpg
PS I'm sorry for the neck.

Still short on time here, might try and color it tomorrow.
revelations - Thumbs up for the picture :) The desperation of the climber comes through.
Jonish - I'd like to see more contrast in the head so it don't blend so with the background.
kaby - Nice exuberant expression.

I'm back! It's been a pretty long time, and I've been improving bit by bit... Here's my Oxygen King:
http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o40/ramonsk88/TheOxygenKingSketch.jpg
He's a very strange king... He's the strongest fighter on his planet, even though he's very slow. He's half king, half ghost, and he can use his OX-Staff to command the oxygen that is flowing out of his head... He's actually an air-magician...

Here's my take, the Oxygen King looking over his dominion
Made while listening to Boards of Canada, makes you discover sensations you never experienced before :P
http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/8420/oxygenkingil2.png
Kaby Haha, nice design, do I recognise a touch of Cyanide and Happiness in there?
Revelation Love the idea, and the execution is excellent, you really captured the emotion of the scene.
Jonish As Funnyface said, his head is blending in the background, some kind of glass effect or contrast would be cool.
Microbe Cool idea but the drawing itself is a little simple (In my humble opinion)
FunnyFace Perfect concept, as usual. Is it computer-made or pencil and paper?
Also, thanks Lingmerth for the excellent tutorial you gave me, it really helps

kaby - He's a shrewd little fella, his facial design reminds me of those tiny murderous creatures from Hell Boy 2 that jump in your face and try to scratch your eyes out. The tiny bottles marked "air" are comical too. One critique would be the cigarette hanging from his open mouth - defying oxygen's gravitational field?
revelations - Decent sketch, the concept is what gives this a source of interpretational warmth. Keep up these exercises, I'm looking forward to watching you improve.
Jonish - The character reminds me of Mr. Freeze and the Terminator's lifeless red irises behind his black frames. Your composition is strongly positioned, centered on the oxygen king. Some suggestions for improvement would be to check out a few sky, fire, and metallic/plastic/mechanical tutorials. And the neck is fine, I like the creative idea it suggests - why not an extendable neck? Maybe the air close to the ground is too toxic for even the king's exposure?
Microbe - Peanuts, anyone? Satisfying aviation sketch.
FunnyFace - Very impressive sketch, there's an excellent 1950's retro feel merged with a futuristic argonaut from the Pulp Era of science fiction adventures. It was also clever of you to have the character as a female and the actual "Oxygen King" concept as a piece of survival equipment. I hope you'll have time to finish it if you intend to continue the drawing or color it.
ramonsk8 - Hahaha @ the "OX" name on the staff. Plump Burger King genie from the royal Romanian era he is. I can hear him bawling and burping all over his carbon dioxide cupcakes.
XXITheWorld - Curiously serene for a simply executed idea. It almost reminds me of the Gorillaz character stripped of his pop cultural attributes - the last drawn character on the planet making his last stand where the air is breathable.
dan liimata - Hey Danny boy! It's been what, 2 years? We used to kick it in here on the daily. Your sketch is skeletonized bizarrosity with the ace of spades confetti ready to explode over the graveyard. Smoke clouds and black rose funnels to be expected.
perrybyte - This is an interesting character, an inflated-like robotic hippopatamus Cyclops emitting bright oxide gases from his electrical cores. Good job.
Mitze - "Please... please... my lord, I'll do anything for a small inhalation!" Lord drops metallic pants. "THANK YOU, OH MERCIFUL ONE!"
Lingmerth - Liking it, it's like a silver ammonium tomb built for kings.
NeechMonkey - Those are monkeylicious colors, it'd be pretty humorous if you were to add a tiny floating yellow crown above his astronaut's helmet.

oxygen king. HE'S HERE TO SAVE YOUR ASS
well, he would have been if I'd managed to put a load of asphyxiated looking fellas around him (I couldn't quite get them right. and you know what that means? practicepracticepractice) so he's kind of stood on his own all, "waitwhat there's no one to save. you guys are jackasses )':"
http://img80.imageshack.us/img80/6697/oxygenkingkp4.jpg
revelations: in the hall of the oxygen king! badumdumtsst. I really like the open space, swooping lines and that little bit of humour. it's an interesting piece
Jonish: love the contrast of the orange markings on the blue mask and I'm pretty fond of the colours you used for shading too. looking at his orange dot eyes is kind of bugging me out
Microbe: you do some slick machinery! it looks so glossy
FunnyFace: nice take on it! the design itself is awesome (I'm picturing 1950's housewives wearing it while hoovering their moon homes)
ramonsk8: my favourite bit of this is the little gramophone looking piece on top of his head puffing smoke. it's a cool character design (dig those massive fists!) and it'd be nice to see some varied line weight to really draw you in
dan liimatta: sick. I love all the little details. be cool to see it finished, but even as it stands it's looking gooood
Mitze: while scrolling casually through the thread, at first I didn't entirely register what was going on in your picture. then realisation struck and I gasped, laughed and fawned over your delicious colours
Lingmerth: sinister stuff. I'm really drawn in by those deep shadows
NeecHMonkey: great colours and atmosphere. I think your Oxygen King should hook up with FunnyFace's lovely lady and they can star in a fantastical B movie together

Vulgar' Thanks, I'll check those tutorials right today.
Thanks all for the crits. To the contrast: If you meant the head silhouette disappearing in "air", I wanted it like that :-) If you meant wrong use of colours - sorry for that, will do my best next time :-)
XXITTheWorld - It reminds me one old painting from romantism. Absolute freedom.
dan liimatta - Great as always, Dan, do you have archive of your DSGs like separate sketchbook? From what I saw, they are very different from what you do normally!
Mitze - So dark and hopeless!
NeecHMonkeY - Yay, cool! Don't know what more to say.

Revalations- You did good job depicting something that's supposed to be for the most part invisible.

Tommov: he might not be an oxygen king but he looks pretty awesome to me. the depth to those cracks and battle scars is sweet (and I love your little oxygen king doodle too, though I feel kind of threatened by his highness. he's pretty intimidating)
goran: mint idea! and I love the grainy texture giving the whole thing a nice atmosphere. or er, lack thereof
Gumish: cool idea and pretty intriguing, if you think about it. is he stealing the oxygen or giving that fella ONE LAST BURST OF STRENGTH TO REACH FOR THE INHALER? ... yeahokayit'sprobablytheformer

nice stuff here, again everyone has done amazing jobs. Who knows, in the freak event that I get some time tomorrow I throw something in! Something I thought I might point out are a few of O2's other properties.
I didn't really see anyone play off the fact that pure oxygen gas is:
a. Highly explosive, or
b. A key ingredient in rocketry, or
c. going to make you high if concentrated.
It just seems to me like most people thought of it is "breathable air"
Still, as I said Before GREAT CONCEPTS EVERYONE!!! :yayca:

Deevad Nice rendering, and cool character design
Mysterian Love the composition. And the fact that its smoking a cigarette
benu Walking Algae Tank... Why didn't I think of that?
Here's my concept.
The Oxygen King is an enormous invertebrate that has evolved very little since it emerged from the primordial soup. These magnificent creatures fill themselves with enormous amounts of oxygen to maintain boiyancy on the air currents, similar to ballast tanks. The atmosphere of their planet is composed mostly of heavier gases including CO2, which they respire to produce Oxygen and thus float. The Oxygen King extends enormous poisonous tendrils below itself to catch prey, and maintains such a high altitude that the many aerial creatures never realize that it is there until it is too late. When food is sparse, Oxygen Kings are even known to descend so that their tendrils come in contact with the ground, picking up land based prey like a drag net. The size of these creatures means that they have no predators, and thus, can live for hundreds of years.
Studies of the creatures are limited. Scientists and biologists note that the anatomical design of Oxygen Kings warrants great care. Any small spark near them has a very real possibility of setting off an explosion of a rather epic proportion considering their size.

dan liimatta - Tremendous work. Horrific and whimsical, I feel like there's a tragic tale surrounding this king.
mysterian - Please continue to get carried away. Nice work on the DSG logo also.
Ceyface - Very Magritte. I like it.
EBrown - Great concept, like a Portugese Man o' War in the atmosphere.
Thanks everyone for the kind comments. The pose sells the 1950 imagery I guess. I wanted the woman to seem unbothered by the extreme equipment like the housewives dancing around with vacuum cleaners in the old commercials. XXITheWorld - It was drawn in PS7 with a Wacom but it felt like pencil and paper :).

I'll comment later, just wanted to put mine up since Im already behind again :D
PS: I just wanted to portray the oxygen king as some mythical creature with big lungs.
It is believed that one breath of this creature gave birth to life on earth, if this creature is killed we might kill our supply of air.
Then again it's a myth...and ...well the guys form mythbuster to kill this beautifull animal :D
PS1: Oh yeah, I think that cloud in the bottumleft kinda messes up the balance fo the picture..not sure.

ok, just picking out my favourites here:
revelations: I like that you played with the canvas size, I often just draw my stuff on A4 portait or landscape, I should experiment a bit more with different shapes of canvas too.
Jonish: I saw your sketchbook, some amazingw ork in there. Not really shining through in this piece. I think it's too low opacity on a white background, try filling in blocks of color first and work from dark to light for a quicker result.
funnyface: Nice suit design, the face seems a bit wide though, the smaller part of her face should be even more hidden.
ramon: nice lineart, i like seeing lineart from people, its so different from what my drawings look like. Mine are like scribbles making up a shape, yours are so clean and fluent. You should try to adjust the levels in photoshop though so we can see the lines better.
xxItheworld: It reminds me of a classic painting by a french guy (cant remember which), its just wierd what he stands on? Its sor ectangular the characters legs would need to bend accordingly, you couldnt stand 90 degrees on a 45 degree angle without bending your knees.
mitze: you are one crazy son of a *** the moster is class!
gutss: I love the brushstrokes in the character and top clouds. Nice to try that very difficult perspective, it needs some work, but a very brave attempt!
goran: looks like a print in some old book, nice touch.
deevad: gorgous treatment
mysterian: probably the piece with the biggest WOW factor, I mean...wow!
hamsta: glad to see u work the pencils, your sketchbook is your best friend.
powerhouse: fantastic! amazing how well some copy and pasting works.
benu: love this design...I anyway like the fantasy/storytelling book approach. Its just so magical.
Ebrown: nice textures, love the birds that give sense of scale.

Interesting. I remember this was a CHoW topic a long while back too. I took a second swing at it with the same basic take I used back then. (hopefully with a better sense of craft now though :) )

Story: In the polluted desert, there is a cavern with remarkably clean air, dominated by a living figure of the "Oxygen King." None know the origin of the massive plant figure, be it sculpture or some ancient sleeping titan, but his hospitality is often enjoyed by travelers of the wastes, who enjoy the clean air and water of the Kings throneroom cavern.

Hamorhage the crit machine It's quite a mighty chicken you have there, it would make for a fine dinner ;)
The large red crest is very heavy and weights the creature down, which closes the composition, and I think doesn't match too well with the idea either.
The clouds are rock are well rendered, good feeling of atmospheric perspective. I don't think the one on the bottom left ruins any balance.
I should do homework now
