Not sure if anyone has seen this before, but it was a first for me. Nice to see the method for a good charcoal/white-charcoal portrait drawing. Also a pretty cool artist in general--his emphasis on peeling paint/decaying walls is fascinating.

Does anybody know what's that golden pole that appears about 30 seconds in?

That'd be a mahl stick. Essentially a glorified stick, it's used to steady the hand while avoiding smudging the hell out of one's drawing/painting. Here's a picture.
