View Full Version : Dream Stream

October 22nd, 2002, 06:56 AM
the new theme will be Dreams and Stream of consiousness speed paintings.
I want to leave this open to interpritation, so everyone can have as much freedom as possible.
for dream paintings please include a brief description of the dream, you are interipting, it can be your dream a friends dream, a dream you read, for anyone who does not want to create a image please feel free to share a description of your dreams you would like to see illustrated by another artist.
stream of consiousness painting is similar to lucid dreaming, these can range from the sureal to the complete abstract. the goal here is to start a painting with no expectations or initial ideas, let the muse and the Id dance together and take over your marks. after a few moments take a look at the abstract shapes and strokes you have laid down and try and pull images and symbols out of them as they appear to you, until you reach a destination you didnt anticipate.
the inspiration behind this theme comes from the work of an artist named Nivbed!
his images are sureal masterpices of beauty, Nivbed has generously agereed to help me start off this thread with a few samples of his work to help inspire us all..
for that those that are farmiliar with his work, taste it agian for the first time.-
For anyone seeing Nivbed's art for the first time, try to make the most out of this humbeling moment.

i remember having seen nivbed concepts and art a few months ago. i had then completely forgotten to check these works, and i regret it.
nivbed, your art is fabulous. i especially like that "tear" illustration with the blimps. it fits perfectly within this dream thread, andrew made a perfect choice.

interesting topic, i'm sure there will be lots of interesting things soon.
here's my attempt:
http://www.polycount.com/cottages/gekitsu/pimp/dream1.jpg
it's a bit of a mixture between both topis: i had the athmosphere of a location of a dream in my mind and listened to the excellent soundtrack of "the crow - city of angels" (thanks sparth ;))
the rough idea was there but i trioed to stay as subconcious as possible when painting to achieve that dreamy wishy-washy effect.
unfortunately, i don't know anything about this dream anymore, just the athmosphere of this space i was in.

this one was more on the stream side, tho a lot of my dreams look like this. white realistic back, sillhoutes, tron-ish some would say, and no sounds at all in them.

@andrew - i hope i never have that first dream there....
@nivbed (if he's listening) - amazing - the car door and the shark/spotlight are totally amazing - i could list more compliments but it would just get boring/redundant - you're awesome
i hope i can contribute here - i sort of fried my computer on friday night (read: erased everything on it, including, obviously, photoshop), so it might be a while before i get a chance to

Nivbed- those are some beautiful pieces. Your subtle light diffusion is fantastic. I especially like the dog with the little figures in the tree.
Interesting topic. I actually dreamed I was electrocuted last night -was not fun. Probably one of my worst dreams ever.

This is an interpretation of a dream I've had ever since I was a little kid. It's the same recurring dream, over and over again. I've probably had the exact same one 7 times now, it's my nightmare.

probably has to do with he chronic tenseness i have in my back muscles ;_; ( and the night before this i had a dream about programming homework ... yup...my dreams are telling me i should slack off ...)

no joke, and I have no clue why this is so prominent in my mind. Weird to me, and so I painted it. Lately my mind has been going over the top in my dreams, 2 nights ago, I was in the middle of a construction site, but doing nothing but being in the way. it was too ambiguous to paint, but this image really stuck to me, as odd as it is.

This particular dream was a horrifying dream from my early youth. An old farm house my family used to live in had this basement and stairs like shown and I had many dreams of my older brother and sister leaving the basement and forgetting I was behind them. Something would always grab my leg and when I screamed for help, no sound escaped my lips. They would close the door leaving me in the darkness.

I had a dream I was watching the Muppet Show the other night with guest host Bing Crosby. Ol' Bing never hosted the show but I just found out that he died during the second season (the year I was born), Oct 14th. Anyway, the creepy part is that all the muppets were real flesh and blood instead of the fuzzy puppets we know and love. AND they still had the voices of Jim Henson, Frank Oz, etc... Below is the best way I can describe the Miss Piggy I saw.

sparth-that one rocks
andrew-great mood on that second one of the forest, the two different weather conditions really adds to the dream look. my favorite of this thread so far.
sym7-without the figure it looks like clouds from an airplane, it has a very cold feeling to it also.
i often have dreams of very commonplace things, so this thread will be a challenge in that i have to portray these things as dream-like as i can. when i was in highschool i'd have dreams i was getting dressed and going out to wait for the bus, and then id wake up and have to do it all in reality.
heres mine from the dream i had last night, i was on the phone asking some woman about digital cameras.

I was just kind of playing around..
I had a dream once that I was battling with some demons in a small room that had an urn in it. The people I was with (didn't know any of them) and I defeated the demons. Immediately afterwardsthe lid of the urn slid aside and the ashes spoke to me. I don't remember anything that was said by the ashes but I do remember that my spirit (or my dreaming mind) was thrown out of the room and into space.
This is meant to portray the essence of it anyway. I was just playing around and really liked the way it went. Reminded me of Chagall.. and thats not bad at all :) .

I've got to say, sparth, that is a fantastic image. I love it.
I hope you don't mind if I associate a dream of mine with it. I dreamed I was in a pitch black space in which I couldn't see anything. Suddenly a door opened in front of me and when I looked behind me I saw a landscape that was very much like the one you portray. It was one of the most vivid dreams I've ever had and I've thought of it often. When I saw what you made I was just blown away.

eggbeater: of course not, it's a mix between "dreamy feeling" and proper forms that belong to my inner being.
can't really help it, i'm always forced to add that "aesthetic layer". a layer that should be removed, i admit. :D
but on the other hand, isn't it hard to also determine which forms belong to your dream, and which forms belong to your art? i guess it could be considered as slightly the same thing, as a dream is nothing more that a personal visualisation.

RudeCorleone - That is purely awesome. I LOVE IT! If I had money I would buy that print off of you...that is awesome.
apb - Great stuff man. I really think it communicates a lot even if it is so simple. I think the white canvas adds to it ;)
davi - I love that sketch. It's so visceral. You have a great style and that is an awesome idea.
Wizard of KOZ - This one had me looking for a while. It seemed really simple at first but was very very intriguing. I think you have an emotional piece there...great work. I caught myself staring at it for a while yesterday scrolling up then down hehe.
oglzogl - Pure emotion...I love your style.
Wetterschneider - I really like this piece. I can't believe you arrived at such a good outcome when you didn't have anything in mind prior. The composition is great...I love it.
myroto - For some reason those really creep me out. I have had dreams where things look technicolor like that...very creepy...good work.
Sparth - My lips are tired from how many times I have to say, "Sparth you rock!"...your stuff is unbelievable. Keep posting I love it.

Maybe it could be a stream because I had no idea what was going to happen. Just started making lines:

I kind of liked this guy anyways.. Maybe more the pose and facial expression than anything.
Thanks for the kind words MindCandy. I'm liking that nest you've got going. Linking the texture quite a bit.. and the lighting is nice (Although the eggs could maybe use just a little white highlight to give them a bit of form. Maybe just a quick stoke over the top?)

Ok, these are lame, but they fit into the "Stream" portion of this thread, seemingly. :)
Just lying on my bed with a pen and a little notepad. All together I think it was like 10 minutes for all three. I added the digital text because my handwriting is hideous. :)

Doing these actually gave me some ideas for a mini-project I might do soon. We'll see.

yeah, nivbed, they are hideous. HAHAHAHAHA!
just kidding.;)
but, I remember looking at picassos that looked as if they took 5 minutes going for around $8-9,000 easily. The middle one looks like Starry Night...
Heres my mind set for the last week and a half (WarHammer, WerxOne and I are working on an animation)...

Remember Salems Lot? That old Stephen King movie? That show really freaked me out when I was a kid. I used to think about, while drifting off to sleep, that kid vampire who was floating outside his friends window begging to be let in. And in that half awake, half asleep state I could almost see the creature out of my own window. No details.. just a ghostly image:

I still sometimes think about that kid when try to go to sleep today. Sometimes I half expect his head to float up to my window. Scary!
Goatta say, I'm inspired by all you guys (although, unfortunately, my work doesn't show it.. I am still trying to get this digital stuff down as I am sure you can see . ). Great stuff ya'all have going there. Fantastic atmospheres!

stream of conciousness...general lack of skill in painter made me just want to try the fundamental shapes...spheres, cylinders, etc...then i realized it kinda looked like a little...breakdancing...thing. love it, hate it, laugh at it
