Hello. I wanted to know if anyone here has attended the Academy of Art in San Fransisco and if you liked it there, or if you have heard anything about it. I'm planning to attend for spring term of 03'. I'm majoring in illustration. I dont really know that much about the school so any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! :)

I hear it's very good. Justin Kauffman (el coro) went there, and Daarken is currently going there, and they're both excellent artists :)

Im going there... im in my 3rd year... Its cool, lots of free workshops to attend... Theres lots of inspiration, as long as you go out and look for it.. starting out though is kinda slow cuz there's a lto of people that dont know a whole lot about anything (at least as far as illustrators go) but being a forum member like this is an excellent way to connect with talented other young artists.. The number one thing is to be commited and to practice a lot.. i mean A LOT.. if you dont practice drawing in a regular basis (at the very least a half hour a day) start doing so now.. Cuz all the people that are doing very well in this school (and after they've graduated) are the ones that practice a lot... so in other words PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE! if u come, then i hope to see u at a workshop...

hhave you heard of www.workshopcrew.com? check it out.. they're all Academy of Art grads..

Thank you Main Loop for the much needed advise. That's good to know that it will be slow starting out. I kinda wished it wouldn't be, but at least I'll know what to expect. I try to draw at least half an hour a day, but I usually dont get that much time in. I hope to see you in SF also. Thanks again!!!

Howdy-Howdy.
Im a Junior in highschool, and Im also interested in attending the Academy of Art in San Fransisco. What requirements do they have? What prerequisite courses should I take? Should I have a portfolio ready with assorted art I've done? (different mediums)
I'm very new when it comes to looking at colleges and I was hoping someone could help me out with the things I need to know when applying. Thank you so much. ^^

all they require is a high school degree/GED.. A portfolio is good for the grant they have, which the money they give you is based on how good your portfolio is.. start learning about art before you go in, and you'll be miles ahead of most of the rest.. the best were drawing even before they got in... and do what i told lilsketchy..

I'm in my first semester at AAC right now. going for my illustration major. If you have taken art classes before in high school and you're confident enough in your skills, bring a portfolio and you could get yourself signed out of some classes. But only if you think you've already got what you'll need later on. I took 3 years of color& design in high school, and took it here just because i knew the subject matter.. and figured it wouldnt be that hard. :) lesson learned? yea i shoulda gotten signed out of some foundations classes, i know everything i need to know i just dont work as cleanly as needed. BUT at least this way i'll be able to work at that level.

workshops in your first semester with a full classload are hard.. but theyre worth it, you just have to NOT get sucked into the whole "hey im away from home and i can do whatever i want" deal. you have to stay on task here, which is really good. the housing situation is a waste, if you have friends that will be here, get a place on your own. trust me :)

There are excellent instructors at this school, some less desireable than others, but they all have a lot to offer.. and they're all some of the best connections any fledgling artist can have. and yea.. if you can find time that you arent either sleeping or working on projects.. do some work for yourself on the side. its suprising how much it helps.

anyway.. i have class in the morning ^_^
good luck to you and maybe we'll meet up sometime.
