...what's the point of making art when there is so much of everbody elses art to enjoy?

Why are we toiling our lives away? Why don't we just buy someone else's cd or movie or game or book? Let them do all the blood, sweat and tears. I guess I'm wondering, "What's my motivation?"

Enjoyment can be a big part of doing your art, regardless of how much is already out there. Some people enjoy it enough to do it themselves! :)
As for motivation, what IS yours? o_o Do you want to do it? Do you enjoy yourself when you do art? Have some visual tale to tell?
There are a lot of threads, including recent ones about this motivation topic. I say it because it'll be a good idea for you to look and see what others have to say, too!

I think of it this way:
Life, by itself, is lame (boring). Because of this massive lameness, you have to do something to keep yourself occupied, either hang out with friends, work your ass off, make money, mooch, learn, do dru gs, create, love, hang out with nature, religion, join a gang, fight, race cars, get angry at other people, etc. It's been this way since the first caveman could talk. Just viewing someone else do these things is usually only a temporary thrill in the massive black (oh yes) lameness of life. I find that its more rewarding and adds spice if you do it yourself.
Lets take for example, pr0n. Yeah, it has it's cheap thrills, but its nothing like doin it yourself.
I could go on a tangent here, but you get the idea.

Sometimes the means justify the end - as opposed to the other way around.

Because that wouldn't be as interesting as having a crack at it myself.
You ask why? I say why not?

My experience has been that people who want to create, be it art, music, a novel, etc., need to create. They can't just sit back and look at other's work. When they see a work of art, they get an itch to do do it themselves and an immense satisfaction as well. Listening to a piece of music is enjoyable, but knowing you were performing it is leaps and bounds better. Keep them from their guitar or clay or canvas too long and they're unhappy.

Never. Because I know I have worlds on my fingertips and they're raring to get out.

I guess my motivation used to be because it made me feel "special." How many people dare to become artists or even have the talent? Well, that and I like art.

The child artist is special, because they're the best in their family or school. But then he steps into the wide world and the internet, and he becomes one of many talented people.
To like art and like creating art are different things. I like music, but I don't itch to compose, though I do itch to perform.

Not really. Who ELSE will draw my stupid ideas?

This thread reminds me of learning to play guitar in my teens.
There was no way in hell I was ever going to be better than Tony Iommi, Jimi Hendrix, Rocky George, Jerry Cantrell or whoever, but that didn't stop me.
Yes, I could have just listened to their records but sometimes you need to put your foot up on that 15 watt practice amp and rock out to "Paranoid"
Just because.
Paramnesia sums it up well, it's a little voice in your head that screams "make angry garage punk!" or "make delicate watercolours of flowers!" or whatever.
It doesn't go away so you might as well do it.

Tangent thought inspired by this topic: "Why do I read these topics when I already have stupid ideas in my head?"

I guess I'm waiting for that "itch." I used to have it, just like the urges to create your all describing but not in a while. I do worry when I haven't put pencil to sketchbook in a while. I'm not myself, I feel guilty for not drawing, maybe that is my itch?

Why mister anderson why, why? Why do you draw? Do you believe you are drawing for something, for more than your own amusement? Can you tell me what it is? Do you even know?

Why do we need to know how fire works?
It's much easier to find them from lighting-struck wood.

Cause I wanna. THere's a deep rooted need to create. Nothing against people who'd rather not, I'd just rather make.

Because I wasn't born rich. I've got to do something for a living. Why not do something I'd do anyway, just for fun?

Drawing because other people don't do it right. The vision in your head has never been materialized before and it needs to be made, at some cost on the artist.

Is it just me or there's a lot of "motivation" posts lately... I don't get it, if you don't have the motivation to create art, maybe you should try something else. maybe this is not for you. I guess if you actually find that "passion", you probably won't spend time thinking "why am I doing this", and start actually do something...
Stoat, LOL I hear you...that's what I want for my life actually, doing what I love everyday and get paid for it.

If we didnt need to use money in our live and every work was about to be done by well-designed robots(that they dont need human checking) and you have all your needs(biological etc.) what would you do in your free time?
You as an artist(who dont have the need to make money)--->what you aim for?
And every people will think the same.
An artist is a person that never stops researching. An artists food is information. You say why we must make art, but have you ever thought that every little think comes from fantasy(and that from cavemens to present humans) we envolved by using our imagination?
Me as an artist have some aim.
Lets say we are comic artists. If you study a lot your script you can make comic that will solve some scientists problems.
Also a game designer.Lets say that we want to know how life may be in mars.Thats the place were artists come and work out and create a whole visual world that solve some future problems.
I hope you understand what i talk about.
If you dont have motivation, there is always a big aim that not everyone sees.
For the present, an aim is to make art for a living(but you also have to work by having in mind what i told earlier)
I think all artists hide a phylosophist inside them.
The big aim for me, that will keep me motivated till i die is to manage make art to help humanity(i know maybe a lot of you will laugh, but thats just personal aim,or to leave painting with important information to the next gen, to give you an example)
Sorry for my bad english(i hope you understand). :D
