Hi !
I played with his jeans and gave it a fading demin look and his hoodie is supposed to look.. "old" or slightly splotchy.. maybe its too subtle ? Hmmmnnn....
Anyhow, thanks so much for your responses!

Greetings all !

-Masterpug i'm a total newb to the forum here .. I still need to learn how to attach a link to my sketchbook like you all have.. AND to subscribe to threads so ican follow the otehrs artists also !

-Bhanu oh wow man.. incredible praise.. I love Carlos Meglia's art style and really was abit shocked to learn of his passing.( we lost alot of incredible talent in such a short year ! I push on to take my stylized cartoon as a homage to the greats.

-Project I thanks very much !

-Spookybabydoll thanks so much ! I always thought of the FF as the first family of heroes that I knew. honestly tho I have more favorites that are villians ( drawing wise.. ) tha heroes. heh !Maybe I'll be able to post some of those!
- Bakatron thanks for stopping by !
If anyone can leave me a message about how to subscribe and adjust my sig I'd be really appreciative !

hehe.. it's my version of a young Conan kinda an ode to Cary Nord's Conan style and I always thought that young conan as a thief , was such a bad-ass that he would.. not only steal your jewels , but the horse you rode in on ! :rocker:

oh hey ! I use 2H and HB pencils for my comicbook pages .. and for my character drawings I use mainly col-erase pencils. since teh col-erase is easier to use and creates so little "dust".

Hey Carl,

Fantastic work man, I really dig your style. Your version of robin is the best.
It's really interesting seeing your pencil work and your roughs. I'm glad your posting these.

I was wondering... How long would you say it took you to get this style of yours down ? Did you gradually evolve into it or did you really push yourself into this particular style ?

Ok this will also answer sourgasm's post.. hehe

I don't think I've really got it down to completely how I want it to be just yet.. I would say i'm 90 percent there on where I want this style to go. I can only get there by drawing and coloring more and not being afraid to experiment.
Now, as for how long it took to GET to this style ? 4 years of going back and forth with my old roomate who happens to be CHEEKS !
I'd have to say Cheeks has been a major influence and mentor in my works.. he taught me how to color in photoshop! We shared tons of opinions on our works as I struggled to find and make choices about my artwork and I guess this is how it evolved into.

The major diffrence I do see is that Cheeks definitely has a genius level of formulating "simplicity" in his works. He's got a knack for making his stuff look so deceptively simple yet captivating !
I tend on the other hand , always want to see what tiny bit more I can add or sneak in .. and , I focus on villians and the darker themes as my focus.

We do watch a whole lot of animation tho.. even tho he beats me in his collection.. I think he has a Library of animated movies and shows ? I have like 8 Dvd's. =/

Freddy Lierman
August 30th, 2008, 04:22 PM
That's cool Carl. Thanks for answering.
I do see what you mean about trying to sneak in some detail (well maybe not detail, but some extra information I guess). And it sure separates your style from cheecks' in that way. Although I enjoy both his and yours equally.
Now post some more works dude !! hah!

Liked your delicious curvy style. i think; sometimes your brain send the signals of
"some preset poses" to your hand automatically. ( especially for hand drawings )
But they are all marvelous. Keep rockin

ok.. so this is part one of my update today..
these are my roughs and lay-outs for some of the art you've seen here.
I always make it a habit to scan my sketches/roughs/lay-outs before I go and clean up my lines its great for helping me see and make choices in the direction I want the final piece to go.. or to have a template for diffrent looks if i was going to draw a chaacter's costume variants...etc.etc.

most if not all of these are drawn in HB pencils.. mixed sometimes with Col-Erase pencils ( the colored lines ) I highly recommend those as they're totally easy to erase and don't smudge half as much as regular pencils do.

Copic markers.. ussually warm greys or cool greys for me. ( they're refillable !! )
