What's a good paint to use for painting sculptures?

What materials are the sculptures made of and how big are they?

Everything from oils to acrylics to commercial auto-lacquer can be used, but it depends on the base material, the size, and where it's going to be placed (out/inside).

Well they're made of sculpey III and... I think they're around 2 inches high 1 1/2 inches thick. And I'd be painting the outside.

Acrylics are the best thing for sculpey. Anything solvent- or oil-based can dissolve the clay and/or not dry properly.

And be sure to spray the finished paint job with sealant, because acrylic will scratch off easily.

Also, we have a forum devoted to sculptures and 3d.

Acrylics=Yes! It should be clarified that it'd probably be better to use craft acrylics than fine pigment canvas acrylic....but maybe that's 'cause I'm cheap. :P It's also a keen idea to fine sand, buff and spray with primer beforehand. Color can cause those little imperfections to stand out worse.

I was really confused, I thought you wanted advice for making a painting of a sculpture, took some time until I got it. :)

Poster paints are tempra and are extremely watered down "pigments"...they're useless for everything but a few kids crafts.
