ROUND #124 :: 24th Century Space Smuggler

-------------
DESCRIPTION

Bahati ("Bad Bones") Lawrence is a Near Future (2400's) Jamaican-Japanese female ship pilot of a run-down merchant/smuggling/mercenary vessel for hire. She plows the space lanes with her alien co-pilot, a being from the Rim Worlds, looking for the next deal or Black Market shipment she can get to help make ends meet.

Off beat and punky with a penchant for bright colours, shiny things, fuzzy dice, and little statues of Hawaiin girls that shake in those dresses, plus all the other detritus of living for long periods of time between ports and avoiding the authorities, Bahati is an okay shot, but much better at high-tailing it out of a tight squeeze.

Her copilot is a non-human/non-terrestrial something. Be creative if you choose to include it, but it's not necessary.

Notes:
Bahati is female and Jamacian-Japanese.
Her co-pilot is alien. If you include it and it looks like a human in a goon suit, you'll be automatically disqualified from the round.

Reference: Blade Runner, Alien, Tank Girl and Firefly.

DEADLINE
SUNDAY, August 31th, 2008
The way the deadline works: if deadline is on a Sunday and your image is posted on that Sunday 23:59 your local time it's a good entry.
In fact - as long there is Sunday somewhere on the planet your entry is ok. I will make the poll sometimes Monday evening my time (GMT - 8 ) yet I'll have a look at the last entries.
---------------------------------------------------------

POST YOUR FINALS IN THE FINALS THREAD!

Remember to include your nickname in the filename.

About quality - as general rule: if your shapes and values are not decent - you are out. Watch proportions, perspective etc. we need perfectly readable shapes and coherent, consistent values.

_____________

BE PROFESSIONAL - only finished and good quality entries will be taken to the poll. Oregano and Daestwen (yay!) will make the selection.

August 25th, 2008, 09:03 PM
I will be posting this at the beginning of each round for the next few rounds until I am convinced that it has sunk in and that everyone understands this. The original posting is located in the CHOW DISCUSSION thread (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=123393). Please direct your comments (both snide and supportive) there. Thank you.

-----------------------------------
As of August 24, we're tightening the reigns on the CHOW Poll. What this means in practical terms is that not everyone is going to get a cookie anymore.

Admission to poll will be based on the artists' skill and their ability to handle their subject matter: meaning we will keep a wide spread of work from beginners to professionals in the poll based on that particular week's submissions, but we will be far more picky on who actually ends up in poll.

EXPECT TO GET CUT. If you come into this with guns blazing expecting to get to poll and win, you're coming at it backwards.

There will be generalized reasons on why an entry has been eliminated from poll. When we're dealing with the numbers that we often do in CHOW, it's the best we can do and still hope to have a life for ourselves, not to mention hold down day jobs (no, we don't get paid for this, what were you thinking?).

Other points to keep in mind:

The poll is subjective. Surprise. The entries that go to poll are the ones that either I like, or Deastwen likes, or that we both like. We did not ask your opinion.
Poll is not the end all be all of CHOW, CA, my life or yours, so get over it. Enjoy the entries, and the process and keep in mind that we bust our butts for you so you can have an enjoyable experience, but ultimately in the great lay of things, it's meaningless.
We make mistakes. We leave people out, we put people in who probably should not be in. We do our best, but at the end of the day, we're human. Deal with with it.
We also on occasion take someone to poll who otherwise wouldn't be there. This is done purposefully to help someone get some extra attention for their work and to get them some decent crits. It's not done so you can have a hissy fit about it. Get with the program and help people instead of bitching about the poll.

More as I think about it.

All the best,
~Oreg.

I'll do my best to get something good in, but I'm can't commit this round so don't ban me if I don't make it - yes, that means you Oregano!

If I do, I'm thinking a brightly-colored dreaded-mohawk would be cool, with a cybernetic eye of sorts. Dirty tank top maybe, not sure...

I just love chow, it gets my imagination working overtime!!!!

First idea...

Had nothing to hand but a calligraphy pen so please excuse the huge ink lines...

I have also filled my latest sketchbook so am working on a crappy a5 so will have another sketch out soon.

Also working on the ideas of the copilot... for some reason hes very pig like (too much Dr Who for me I think!)

Help this way would be appreciated and needed :D

Thanks for putting this on Daestwen and Oregano, I learn alot with Chow and enjoy it very much!!!

EDIT: had another play... thinking of face shape and colour... I want her to have a leather jacket like what I had when I was in my punk days :D and the hair colours I never had to balls to dye....

First CHOW ever Guys! Initial sketch. I would describe the co-pilot as a liquid being made sentient by the cybernetic eye fixture at his head, which works in unison with the rings to allow his body to hold some sort of form. Lemme know what you guys think, would like one or two crits if possible before I move on to a final, not sure what I wanna do with her boots either, would appreciate some ideas. Caroline and Septomin, you're looking really good, excited to see where they're going.

Lunchtime start when I should have been doing something else.... :\ The pose is a bit off fer now... I keep thinking of Tank Girl rather than Blade Runner here!

Edit: Did a bit more work on the first. Her ethnicity looks more apropriate. The second is a bit too Tank Girly I think, but I had to get it out of my system!

Edit 2: Tidied up the second rough, and it's gone very Tank Girl, but what the heck! I'm havin' fun! :)

First time CHOWer here. I desperately need to work on my concepting/digital-painting/actually-finishing-pieces. This provides a bit of incentive.

Okay, give it a shot.

What the heck is a goon suit?
Think Star Trek with all the aliens looking someone dressed in a funny suit. We want to avoid that.
Be creative with your alien - make it look like an extraterrestrial, not like a human with antennae :geekg:

Aly and Pat - I think Tank Girl and Firefly are good ref choices. I'm adding them to the brief.

Still have to make her look more space pilot, and probably should add some japanese characteristics to her. I was looking at jamaican references, didn't see the japanese. Oops. I thinned her neck down, and fixed a few other things.

Here's a sketch of her co-pilot. Wanted to go with something with a lot of appendages to steer with. So, viola! I call him Daras, he looks like a Daras to me. :)

Quick and dirty sketch, I seem to be having perspective problems but I can't hammer it down. I think it's her not sitting in the right space. Oh well. Any help/crits/comments welcome.

woah, brutal stuff vorace :)

I'm going for a scene this week. Maybe a bit ambitious for my own good, but hell, at least it will be an epic failure then. My gal will be african face, eastern eyes, a lot of remnants of punkrock (yes I took punky litterally) culture scattered on her outfit and having a squiddish comic relief kind of co-pilot.

This week sounds fun. I love grungy sci-fi, but have always been too much of a wimp to try it.

There are some fun pictures already. I likes.

Just a note, MJ_Alcazar, nice new alien. I think the girl needs her left arm (visual left) tweaked a bit though. The proportion seems a bit small and the bend is a little awkward.

MJ_Alcazar
August 26th, 2008, 04:39 PM
thanks Jefita. I had just gone back to my drawing. Hmmm, I think I'll go dig up my reference again, I was having trouble drawing it in the first place. Oh! Maybe I'll go do it in a mirror and get a better feel of it!

Thanks about the alien. :) I hope this one is less humanoid. :)

Great stuff everyone

PatriciaS: Nice little sketch, i like the collar of her jacket ... also like the way you posed the characters, makes a nice composition

CarolineBradley: Nice idea with the hair, keep working on the rest of the body

septomin: Very nice sketch, has a interesting silhouette... i think the waist may need to come up a little higher

MJ_Alcazar: Try working out the design and the pose/ anatomy separately and the combining them ... tackling both at the same time is too much to think about

Kreegz85: Cool sketch so far, you handled the foreshortening very well... one thing bothering me is the hair, it looks a little too anime ... i would go for something a little more realistic looking

JakkaS: Awesome start i love here little alien companion, but it needs some more punk and Jamaican elements

DecayingLolita: I don't know if you did any thumbnails or sketches before hand but trying to deal with the pose/anatomy, design, and colors/values all at once is very tough. Doing some sketches before hand can help solve those problems in easier steps.

DECYPL: Nice sketches so far, try to give them some more variety

Poshspice: Beautiful sketch definitly captures the description well, love here koalaish pet thing... also the peace emblem on her belt is a nice touch.

dollfaced_joker: Try working out the pose and anatomy before laying on the design elements, trying to worry about both at the same time can be tough

Noah Bradley: Nice start so far, but look out for some anatomy issues... for example her right arm is much longer than her left ... doing a horizontal flip every so often helps point out some of these issues

Hideyoshi: Really nice speedpaint, but if your not too busy you should add some more polish and Jamaican/ punk elements

Vorace: Wow beautiful sketch, so much detail and the Mohawk is very cool! .... legs look a little short and feet a little small

Jason Rainville: Cool start, but i think the design needs some clarification of what she is holding on her back... also her torso looks a little long

Pixeltuner: Nice sketch so far, you definitly get props for going for a whole scene... I'm interested to see how it turns out

UCT: Cool hair peice, keep going and don't be afraid to draw those hands, they give a character a lot of personality

VampireHungerStrike:Nice sketches so far, I'd push the punk theme a little more, but her companion is very cool

daestwen: Nice start so far but i think she needs some more space elements... right now she looks like a regular pirate

I don't know if i will have time to finish this since I'm moving into my college dorm this week but i'll work on it as much as I can

I combined the builds of the Jamaican and the Japanese, and she turned out a bit shorter and more voluptuous...

On her arms are some sophisticated Ninja chemicals for quick escapes...or perhaps they're viruses...

Gold and colors will abound.

Torn materials = punk, and pirate.

Bands on her legs are computer chip bands inserted beneath skin.

Communication technology in her gloves as well as research.

Headband has jamaican flag colors.

Also, afro.

Wow for a second there I though Geztar joined Chow. Dunno what to say :nohope:

Sketched mine this evening. I will color it in tomorrow. It was pretty fun doing this. I’ve got the Jamaican and Japan flags in there somewhere. I guess her way of holding on to ancient roots? Leaned more towards the grungy Bladerunner ref. Good excuse to play with some more post-apo themes which I love. Does the alien look too human-in-a-suit?

Here’s a few random comments. More later…

Hideoyoshi: Love the mood you've established. Good color palette too.

Zenichi: I like the design on the first sketch and bottom left of the last sketch, both’s upper torso region is strong. Don’t forget that she likes shiny, colorful things too ;)

Jska: Nice costuming.

Jason Rainville: I really like her Bitterfly gadget. Cool, cool. Hope to see this piece tightened later on.

Miles: Only 15 and already kicking ass. I like the way you handle your cool colors and shadow. One crit: I don’t see too much of the Jamaican or Japanese on her. Maybe loose the red hair?

Mr.M: Good job on the face. She does look like a mixed race.

More comments later on. Time for bed.

Hey! First ever post on ConceptArt.org. W00t!

This sounds like so much fun, but I'm not sure I can find the time to do it what with dissertation stuff to finish off, writing stuff AND portfolio stuff. Thought I'd post some inspiration instead and help out. ^.~ Caitre Noire's concept seems pretty cool, always Chris Sanders-esque. (of Lilo and Stitch fame)

Just looking through some Glen Keane stuff and found this. (http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_0hrrWXjfxC4/SJl_dSlaECI/AAAAAAAAAVA/-3ebs3FF86g/s1600-h/009.jpg) Seems a pretty apt concept.

Patrica S can't wait to see the finished version

Caroline nice sketches

septomin nice design

MJ_Alcazar agree too human for her alien but I like the head maybe make him a a critter type carrying guns. your second design of the woman is better.

Kreegz85 cool take on the alien digging the design

JakkaS facial expression very cool can't wait to see final version

THe Whistler I like the design pose seems a little stiff imo looking forward to seeing coloured version of this

DecayingLolita wow great design for the face. very cool.

DECYPL really like the 3rd pose and the facial expression

Posh it great to see your sketches love the design and the scarf on the alien nice touch

dollfaced_joker a few minor anatony issues, try get some reference with a similar pose.
also the arms are straight out they should bend slightly as she resting some weight on them
keep the sketches coming though

Noah cool

Hideyoshi wow can't wait to see the final version

Vorace love the design and the small touchs like the dice

Jason looking forwad to seeing this in colour

Pixeltuner really punky design she has loads of attitude

UCT are you adding more details to the suit,? looking foward to seeing this in more detail

Vamp loving the alien design.

daestwen great pic, but i think she might be missing some 24 century touches,

Howie like the large bottom one will be good to see it develop

tuber left hand is a bit off and she is missing any details that would make it futuristic but like the inital sketch

Miles like the design forestortening in the legs seems a bit off though

InFlame love the face design think the arms need more work especially the left one

ikuru cool can't wait to see more

kiwigarbage like the last one the best you have a few anatomy issues with the pose but good start

Sequential76 great sketch

CKLamb can't wait to see details develop on this

Flipnastywebby nice start

Chate Noir really like the large sketch think her right arm stretches a bit too much though

zenichi good sketches

Jska cool sketch great design

mr. m great speed sketch she reminds me of Jennifer Gardener for some strange reason

lukavi great sketch can't wait to see finished pic

------------

off to work now bah :(

Great stuff guys! My girlfriend just fall asleep, so I have some time to write more hehehe... sorry if I missed out somebody, but I am a bit tired and there are so many entries! anyways...

tomwaits4noman: thanks! hehe - havent thought about that dude... :)
like your sketches btw!

Chate Noire: like the cartoonish style

Flipnastywebby: great sketch in 20 mins! I dont really understand her face / eyes though... <:-)

Sequential76: coooool! just love the angle (and not just about the boobs shhh)! keep on pushing!

ikuru: good start! the only crit is I cant feel her hair under the hat (?) or her skull isnt quiet right

DecayingLolita: like the character, but I think you have to balance the composition a bit more - just flip the image and you`ll see ;)

lukavi: cheers! I just focused mainly on her face - and made rest in about 10 mins... btw: love your style man! and your alien reminds me one of my favourite oldschool game --> day of the tentacle (I am not sure in the title, but something like this....) :-)

kiwigarbage: I think you have done a good job so far to get your character`s mood. now you should focus more on the racial characteristics. google some references for the caribbean women face and female anatomy. you could learn a lot from it - even if you want to keep your illustration in a more stylized / cartoonish feeling.

miles: not bad at all bro! I think her legs are abit too short...

Jason Rainville: wow man! cant wait to see the next step! just love the butterfly-jet-pack!

pixeltuner: yeah! punx not dead! sweet!

howie: nice start

deastwen: really like the pose! her face and hands a bit too masculine for me though...

vorace: nice pencilwork mate! a bit too much stuff around the character for me...

hideyoshi: nice speedy!

decypl: cool sketches! (the pose is a `bit` reminds of Nox`s painting...)

the whistler: like the pose! if I were you I would use the same type of guns in both hands, because its a bit confusing at the moment.

jakkas: cool!

patricias: like your girl sketch, but the alien`s pose is a bit weird for me - it looks almost like dancing... <:-)

Thanks to tomwaits4noman and Mr.m for taking the time to crit!

You both mentioned som anatomical flaws, and I think it's in the attempt at a blend of wispiness, and a bit more musculature. I'll definitely work on that when I conjure up the final. Also, I'll take your suggestion (mr.m) to do some more research. I used a couple of jamaican fashion shows for inspiration, but I'll go down and dirty to the real people of the streets. Perhaps that will give me a different direction anyway!

Thanks again :)

Okay, since I'm actually participating this round, it's only fair to do some initial crits. :)

PatriciaS: Nice start! I'd move the co-pilot's foot up and too the left a little bit... Right now they look like they could run a three-legged race. :) Looking forward to updates!

CarolineBradley: Good start so far. I think the caligraphy pen is hindering you, though. When I work in marker I always work at a bigger size than I would with pencil... That way I can still get detailing in! Give it a try, it might work for you too.

septomin: Nice start, just a couple anatomical things... Her left arm (our right) is too short. For example, when I let my arm hang, my fingers touch my knee! (Though I do have arms that are a little long...)

MJ_Alcazar: You've been working hard every week, I really appreciate it. :) One of the things I've noticed about your work is that you tend to do it in sections... For example, her face. You've got her cheekbones sectioned, eyes, chin, etc. What I would do is take a look at people, or photographs of people, and sketch some faces. Get a feel for how things flow together, past just what pieces all need to be there. You can still keep your work stylistic if you choose, but you'll get a more natural-feeling face.

Kreegz85: Great sketch so far, I like the tattoo work so far and her floating buddy. My suggestion would be to get some more work into her feet/boots... Right now it looks like you just totally want to avoid the area. :)

JakkaS: Awesome. Keep it up!

The Whistler: Looking good. Watch her wrists/lower arms, they are looking a little weird right now. (just a hint of an extra bend maybe? can't quite put my finger on it.)

More later...

Apologies accepted.

However, and I don't mean to be a dick about this, but it was a paint over, and it was intentional. Five minutes in photoshop proves that out. Paint overs are a serious issue, both in chow, and in the art community. And sooner or later, you will be found out.

Aside from the ethical situation of stealing someone's work, it does you NO GOOD skill wise. You don't learn anything. You end up doing more damage to yourself, and your reputation, not to mention the possibility of legal action from the artist that owns the original work.

Do a study, that's fine. Even redraw the piece, but credit the artist, and don't claim the original ideas as your own. And don't submit it here in CHOW.

If you, or anyone else, does something like this again, I will ban you. Period.

CRIT FOR ALMOST EVERYONE - could you please reference or at least look at SHOES that people wear and think a bit rationally about the size, form and weight of them and the feet underneath! Most of the footwear seen here is ridiculous and I doubt the person would be able to walk normally in them ... you cant just have big blocks of heavy material strapped to your feet and think that it will work!

Long time fan of CHOW, first time CHOWin' down and participating. I'm leaning more towards Japanese than Jamaican with my character, but I think I might use a Jamaican color scheme to incorporate that aspect of her. Or darken her skin tone or something. Not sure yet. The setting is going to be Bahati stopped at a port.

Critiques are more than welcome.

Im trying to laugh about the fact Ive just closed something I hadnt saved yet was really pleased with.

Im really hoping theres a medical cure for idiots like myself.

Anyway, this is what im left with. I will have to redo the cape, legs, arms, hair piece and head, and start on drawing the containers.piss...

Thanks for all the comments guys, Lastest bidding is the chick with the baseball hat, you think it would look weird to have the hair piece sticking out the back of the hat?

Sorry dude, unless u had Any earlier saves on it, forget about it (I had the same thing last week, (well a crash) even started a thread about it)... However, if u did save something, than that something can be taken up from the trash again... On mac u can use a program called "file salvage" for this, it works well but its a long process (takes hours and then u have to find the image in a huge folder too) and requires a extra hard drive.

Good start everyone!!

Ok i am in for this round again!

I tried a different approach to start this thing, focusing on color and value.
The scenery i thought of is at the entrance of the Cargo of her Spaceship.
I will probably add the alien, as a monkey like being.
I also have to add hi tech things to get the 24th century feeling.

hey REKLAS - love the sketch, only thing I saw might be that the feet seem too parallel, with the rest of her so relaxed it seems a little off. I know zilch about art though, so feel free to ignore me !!

Working on a sketch, i have the really cheapo wacom, the one thats half as sensitive,(and a fraction as expensive... time to get a new one!) and I'm having a hard time gettin' my sketch under control. *scowls* If it makes sense, a pencil and paper has more friction, giving me greater control, maybe i'm just not used to using the tablet yet.

first thumb, our heroine caught by security while making an escape down a hallway lighted in flashing alarm lights mounted in the ceiling. she turns, a "who, me?" expression on her face. thats the basic idea, lets see if i can realise it :)

edit 1: cleaned up sketch and added some detail, not too happy about the face yet. changed the right arm and drew out some perspective lines to start working on getting that right.

edit 2, sketch replaced by newer version, moved her lower left arm into what seemed like a better position, some work on the face. dunno if ive got the ethnicity coming through at all though.

Apologies that these are essentially one liner crits. Hope I’ve got everyone, although some get more than one as they don’t seem to be able to use the ‘edit’ post option on their first post! Ahem…. Shan’t do that again! ;)

PatriciaS – Great start! Loads of character and personality! Love the two of them copying each other!

Caroline Bradley – Really enjoying the looseness of your sketchwork. You have the ethnicity down pat in the last sketch.

Septomin – She looks like she’s emoting for a school play! Lol! Nice sketch. Watch the extreme of the hip: it migh be sticking out just a bit too far.

MJAlcazar – Still think your attention to detail and the fiddly bits is top notch. Great start, and it’s good to watch your progress here. Don’t rush too much, spend time on getting things right and at the same time loosen up your mark making, it’ll pay dividends. Your second alien looks a bit... er, phallic!

Kreegz85 – Great pose! What is that blobby thing! :)

JakkaS – Smashing start! I adore her face.

The Whistler – Pose is strong and the weight on the hips is fine. You don’t have to give her big boots. Punk can go the opposite way.

DecayingLolita – Like the colours (I’m a purple fan). Lots of attitude with the open crotch shot! Lol! Careful on your perspective...

Decypl – Cool sketches! Maybe try a bit more stuff with her outfit... Some more bits and pieces to give it character.

Poshspice – Pretentious derivative crap.

Dollfaced Joker – Like the corset! Try and look at the shape muscles make in the body. Right now she has dead straight arms. Use reference if you’re not sure.

Noah Bradley – Actually I like the pose, however think Punk! Right now her outfit is more disco or prog rock even! :)

Hideyoshi – Fab image! What does ‘orz’ mean?

Vorace – Wonderful! Character and great design! I really like your hands! If I had a crit, check the length of the feet... perhaps a bit stumpy.

Jason Rainville – The wings are excellent. I advise not chopping her off at the feet though. And check out the distance between her breasts and her head. Very long...

Pixeltuner – Composition is really nice, and I think her attitude is lovely. She’s quite cyber punk right now!

UCT – Fresh sketch, and you’ve got a lot of personality going with just a few lines.

VampireHungerStrike – Like her a lot! Are you going to combine the two or do two separate illustrations?

Daestwen – It has been a while! Love her attitude! It’s like she’s saying c’mon... if you dare! She’s quite ‘fantasy’ right now with the stitchwork rather than sci-fi...

Howie – One and six for my money, although 10’s got a nice feel. How about combat pants? Or some nice drainpipes!

Tuber – She’s a pirate! That skull ain’t gonna stay there! Need a few more punky elements I feel...

Pixeltuner again! – Looking really nice! Not going with the other composition then?

TomWaitsForNoMan – Second one! Love the face... Not sure about the arm sticking out. Seems a bit vague... Have her doing something with it. Holding the cigar maybe..?

Decaying Lolita(2) – Update... Leg looks a bit broken on the left. Not so sure here... Although the face is working really well.

Kreegz – Can I say something... watch the hilt of the sword. It looks a bit like something else right now. But that could be just me!

Noah Bradley again! – Like the pose better than the last. Need to see more detail though.

Jason Rainville (2) – Nice update. Wings are comin’ along. Still think you ought to check the head thingy I mentioned.

Miles – Nice colours, pose and comp. You’re right though, she needs ethnicisation!

InFlame – Interesting render on the face, but flat colour everywhere else. I know it’s a WIP, but right now they clash a bit. As for the gun: the blue section looks unattached, but it’s n easy fix.

Ikuru – Really good face! Need more though! :)

Kiwigarbage – Sketches are fab! The last pose is kind of the one I’d choose. However, she doesn’t look very punk yet. Little round specs always look John Lennon, so immediately date her to the early Seventies.

Sequential76 – Great perspective! Looking forward to seeing where this goes, as there’s quite a bit of personality on show!

CKLamb – There’s quite an atmosphere to this piece and a real narrative. The gesture implies a lot. For me the purple hair is clashing bit, but this is early stages yet! :)

Flipnastywebby – Interesting pose, with strong anatomy elements like the hand toward us. The foreshortening on the legs ain’t working yet as it kind of tapers off a bit. What’s the mark on her nose? Is it an ‘Adam Ant’?

Chate Noire – I have to say I love this so far! For me the strongest pose (and I include my work mates here), is the one where she’s looking at the gun. However this is lovely drawing, particularly that outstretched hand.

Zenichi – Really cute! Particularly the top left on the bottom set.

Jska – She’s got a bit of a Steampunk vibe with those spats! Love the expression. I think you could do a bit more with the hands, right now it looks like you’re not quite sure where to put them. Love the tight drawing though.

Mr M – Cool for a speedpainting! The ear’s leaping out at me right now though! Lol!

Lukavi – Faultless! Excellent drawing, and she is sooo cute!

Kischi – Good pose and the outfit works, although I’m not sure why she has her breasts out… The arm holding the gun looks a bit undefined, like there’s nothing under the material. Always imagine the form underneath. Clothing responds to it.

Reklas – Great mix of sci-fi and punk! She still looks a bit European right now though, but then again so does mine…

Jhuntsman – Like the pose, but check the proportion of her head to her body. At the moment it’s a bit big.

MJAlcazar – So you get three crits eh! You know what I want to see from you? A bit of colour! The monster doesn’t look too much like a penis monster now! ;)

Andreas V – Love the style! Longer legs perhaps?…

UCT – Sadly no way at all unless you did ctrl a, ctrl c and copied it. Careful with the face mask, we’re losing her nose right now.

Xaya – Face is spot on! Colours are looking great too. Not yet sure what’s going on with her legs, but I guess this’ll become clearer later.

Decepticon217 – Right now it needs more character. I like the body twist, but perhaps tone down on the use of soft brushes…

Back to earning a living! ;)

EDIT:

Carnifex – The face is smashing! I can see you’re still working out the rest of the composition though. Cool start!

Mimer – That’s some butt! I like the idea, so I look forward to seeing where yo go with it.

Xaya – I ‘get’ the leg a bit more with your update.

Flipnastywebby – Ha ha! Why not try an Adam ant anyway! This pose works well, particularly the tilt on her hand with the weapon.

well as a matter of respect for those who have devoted time to crit my pieces-

patricias-fun pose cant wait to see what you do with it
caroline bradley- fun navigator and cool hair my opinion- the thick ink lines are hiding some decent pen/pencil work
septomin- cool pose is that asamurai sword? nice lines and outfit
mjalcazar- its nice to see someone working in pencil- some of the anatomy could be touched up especially in the facial region-
kreegz85- fun expression I'm not sure a pilot would be carrying a medium sized sword- awesome copilot!
jakkas- i like where its going she looks like shes sneaking underneath a gaurd station
the whistler- nice pose and anatomy although she looks to be packing a little more heat than i would think but this is my opinion only
decayinglolita-great face cant wait to see it done
poshspice- nice design- very tank girl- the new face looks good -nice copilot- i can here him wisecracking already
dollfaced joker- good start- i suggest a few anatomy studies - her eyes are crooked and her mouth is small- its harsh sounding but if you pay attention to such things you will only improve
noah bradley- nice colors and hair
hideyoshi- i love your quick n dirty brush work(not insulting) I could never pull it off- her suit looks very sleak and futuristic- maybe not punky though
vorace- you have a nack for adding all the extra junk that makes a character interesting-great colors and lines- one large crit is her ethnicity is reading as very caucasian
jason rainville- interesting take- nice escape apparatus - I wonder if her anatomy needs some attention in her head and hip areas-
pixeltuner- good start - nice copilot- a more light hearted take on the idea(edit: the updated version is looking good- nice color)
UCT- nice start- the outfit is cool- the head looks like it could use some attention around the jaw and neck area
vampirehungerstrike- nice boots very natural looking pose- nice copilot
daestwen- hehe- shes cute- looks liek shes about to say "gimme tha gold"
howie- nice pose a little early for me to say more but it looks good so far
tuber- interesting take- looking forward to more
tomwaits4noman- cool kind of butch version- watch her neck area and hips- but I understand this is exagerated for effect
mile- nice pose- and kudos for the bg- she is however aslo reading as more caucasian
inflame- nice colors watch the lines in the face they may be prematurely aging her
kiwigarbage- for some reason i thought of Bakshi when i saw this- cant wait to see it done-
sequential76- wow- great start -
cklamb- hehe she looks like she just got caught red handed-nice hair
flipnastywebby- good start wonder what the final design will look like
chate noire- loooooooooooove the design and style- its a breath of fresh air- however I wonder if she isnt punky enough
zenichi- good studies and sketches- cant wait to see where you go with it
jska- nice and punky but not yet reading as futuristic or pilot
mr.m- nice initial painting very serious looking
lukavi- you certainly have a style all your own- nice design and copilot- cant wait to see how the color goes though as the bone structure in the face looks caucasian
kischi- nice sketch look forawrd to see where it goes
reklas- fun design- watch the face as it seems her chin is a bit large
jhuntsman- nice start very natural looking
andreas v- interesting take- i'd watch the anatomy in the stomach area
xaya- nice painterly start- I'm not seeing futuristic pilot yet though
decepticon217- >wristslap< the new start looks much better nice gradients cant wait to see where it goes

poshspice, thank you so much. I just had to look phallic up, hmmmmm..oh...::extreme redness rising up face::..oops. note to self, make sure you've switched off of image search when looking up word. :) At least I know what to avoid now! lol.

Crits continued....

DecayingLolita: I think one of the reasons you might find your work takes too long is that you rush way too quickly into a specific section. In the image you have here, You've got a few things very very roughly blocked in, and then her face is already really detailed and rendered. Stop! You haven't even blocked her arm in yet! Make sure you have the whole thing blocked out before you start detailing. I do it sometimes too, and trust me, you end up wanting to shoot yourself when it turns out (after you draw the rest) that you need to reposition something just a little bit and you have to destroy what you worked so hard on in the first place. Try to work it up across the drawing equally in stages. Instead of immediately focusing on the part you like drawing the most (ie, the face), try to make sure that you give the whole painting equal attention in stages. I think this might help you work faster - you'll want so bad to get to the point where you can finish that face! ;)

DECYPL: Looking good! Anatomy looks strong, her face looks good. I'm not getting as much of the asian influence though.. maybe get some design elements into the clothes to give the idea, if you're not addressing it in her features?

Poshspice: Looking awesome as always! Very tank girl, but as I LOVE tank girl, I totally approve. :P

dollfaced_joker: She's looking weird because she's got no forshortening - she she was laying back, her feet would be closer to us than her head, and hence look bigger. I would suggest looking up some images that have poses close to what you want (don't copy, just look!) and see how you can fix up her anatomy - she's got quite a few issues right now.

Noah Bradley: Careful with those arms, they are two different lengths/widths! Also, watch the angle on the top of those boots - such a sharp angle makes it look like the boots are pointed backward - and hence so are her legs.

Hideyoshi: You've got a couple anatomical issues you might want to clean up before the poll, if you've got time. First, her chest/back area is looking very strange right now. Her breasts have probably derailed your attention from where the curves of her ribcage would be. I would suggest overlaying a layer and working out the anatomy in that area more closely - make sure you know where her ribcage is going, and THEN figuring out where the breasts would lay on top of that. Also, as it stands, her face is looking very flat.

Vorace: So very tank girl, but so very awesome. You're getting better every week, man! Keep it up! (And I'm sorry that my english was so hard to read. :) )

Jason Rainville: Careful on the anatomy there! I think you got distracted by the all the nifty stuff. :) Just some things at first glance... Her upper arm is too short (you can check this out by laying your elbows against your body - mine lay at about the waist, compared to just below her breasts for your image. Also you've lengthened out her torso with all those belts - do a drawing on top *without* all the gear attached and work out her anatomy before attaching anything... I think you'll see what I mean.

More later... (This takes so long...)

Thanks a lot Poshspice and DECYPL,
You are right that there is not really hint that she is a pilot, although in a spaceship there is not really a need for special clothing, i will give her a helmet that is able to minimize, with a optical interface with additional flight information and other things.... i am not quite sure what other thing i can give her to make her more believable as a pilot...

Another sketch, I'm hoping the face looks a little better.

Filled out my sketch a little.

http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk153/Seloh_Eft/scan0002-2.jpg

Kreegz85 - I'm liking it, tattoos going up her are really cool. I like the little alien too.

Daray - looking good. The antennae and the smiley face are a nice touch. The colors are pretty good, are you going to add some shadows? I think you'd be able to see both hands. Her left hand should come up on her other arm, I think.

Marioucci - She looks good. Nice afro. I think, if you wanted to, you could still put pedals and controls in her hand. Make it look like we're looking in on her and the pedals and levers are controlled with really long handles.

Xaya - Looks beautiful, I think the helmet you mentioned should do the trick. Maybe add some thing on her boots or belt, like a futuristic gun or something.

spudstudios- I like her, she looks really rough and tumble. Her alien friend is cool looking too.

REKLAS - looking good. Small thing, her right hand bothers me. The skirt looks like it would be tight there, and I know it would hurt my fingers being stuck in there like that. Maybe she could have her hand on her hip?

Miles - she looks pretty good, I think her calves and feet need a little more love though. :)

Flipnastywebby - I really like her, she's coming along well. Her right arm doesn't look right to me. I'm not really sure why though. Unless she's lifting her skirt, if she is, ignore that comment. :)

jpedro- awwww, I really like this picture. great personality! :)

Inflame -you had a great start i thought. Congratulations on the job, I wish you well!!!

Hum.

Well, firstly, if you were working on this image before you heard of this topic, you can't use it. (It's against the rules.) Secondly, reference-work is a very, very tricky area for this contest, so (if you started this image AFTER you heard of the contest) please attach the photo that you're using for reference. You are, of course, allowed to use reference, but CHOW has a strict policy for plagiarism or paint-overs (not that i think you were necessarily doing either, since you stated it very plainly straight-off, but I just want to be able to see where your drawing from so I can let you know if you're getting too close to crossing the line or not.)

Thanks.

Something occured to me whilst browsing through these images - to quote the brief, "Bahati is an okay shot, but much better at high-tailing it out of a tight squeeze."

I think in some roughs in here, there are a couple poses or gestures which make her look a little too "wild-west shooter." At least to me, any pose where she has her gun cocked back toward her head, or a true full-on aiming pose, makes her look more like a gunner than a runner...just food for thought, I'd be careful not to make her look too much like she'd rely on the gun over a quick dodge/manuevering evasion...not that she's cowardly, just pragmatic.

Though it could be a fine line for debate - as Han Solo says, "hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side." And he's a smuggler, too! ;)

CRIT FOR ALMOST EVERYONE - could you please reference or at least look at SHOES that people wear and think a bit rationally about the size, form and weight of them and the feet underneath! Most of the footwear seen here is ridiculous and I doubt the person would be able to walk normally in them ... you cant just have big blocks of heavy material strapped to your feet and think that it will work!

i notice that for a lot for "tank girl" & other references, but i guess its ok on following rationals:
. 24th century, super light weight or gravity defying materials material!
. space, even less gravity issues
. jamaican blood lines gives her better physical attributes?
. she probably "walk" less, maybe was floating!! which would explain her uncanny ability to out run the authorities and other organisation
. she simply likes the look of those bulky footwear that goes along her eccentric taste of collecting odd bits across the universe...
. her ancestral treasure passed down from her great great great X n grandmother who's a Shinjuku lollita?!!
and the list goes on

i guess the some of the same rational would apply for high heels and stilettos :P

Okay guys, here are some crits,

PatriciaS - Love the sketch, wanna see an update

Septomin - Legs seem a little short, looking forward to update.

JakkaS - Great value study, seems to fit the brief quite well.

Whistler - Decent sketch, work on the weapons a little, try to push the design

Decypl - Love the pose and the loose lines, can't wait to see the co-pilot.

Poshspice - An artist after my own heart, I'm glad someone decided to go with something a little more animated. Great design, excited for color.

Hideyoshi - I really dig the scene, and the design of the characters are original, but I would've liked to have see a more finished piece.

Vorace - I agree with the crit about the legs and the feet being a little small, other than that, wow, very intricate design, love the loose style.

VamireHungerStrike - Try to find some reference for that pose, looks like you were working a little small, try sketching a little larger so you can work from larger forms down to smaller details. The costume is a nice start, keep at it!

daestwen - Agree that it needs more space elements, slightly awkward pose, try a few different sketches before you decide on the pose, once again try some reference.

Howie - Try varying your brushes or at least your brush size a little bit. Needs some space elements.

Tuber - Good start, develop it more to figure out where you want to go with it.

Pixeltuner - Really love this. Like where the boots are goin, not much crit rite now, excited to see an update!

tomwaits4noman - Avoid using smudging and blending tools. Be more free with your mark-making, try to draw form first, not contour. Once again, reference, reference, reference.

DecayingLolita - Like the character design, but I'm a little worried the spacial elements may not end up sitting well together. Try to get a vision during the sketch phase before moving too far.

Noah Bradley - Looks a little hap-hazard. Think about what brushes you're using to convey certain forms and textures. I do like the composition and I think the pose is strong.

Jason Rainville - Very strong light, also quite unique! Anatomy in her torso is off, concentrate on rendering the figure as a whole.
p.s. creepy co-pilot.

ikuru - good head study, lets see the rest of her!

kiwigarbage - Nice design elements, push the pose and anatomy further.

Sequential76 - Great Work! Very effective composition, perspective and pose! Kudos on the originality of the universe smuggling concept, I love those little story-telling elements.

CKLamb - Looking good, nice proportions and light, keep it goin.

Flipnastywebby - good prelim sketch, dig the 80s retro feel.

Chate Noir - Another kindred spirit, love the cartoon inspired look. Great poses, lots of character. Great Work:cheerleader:

Jska - Try to inject some more futuristic elements.

mr. m - Good pose, looks a little muddy, get that form to pop!

lukavi - simply beautiful, no crits here.:asskisser:

REKLAS - Nice starting sketch, make sure the armor elements hang together.

JHuntsman - Nice pose, try to re-work that weapon looks a little strange...

MJ_Alcazar - Make sure your medium is working for you, not against you, looks a little muddy right now, try to sharpen it up. Push the contrast.

andreas_V - Looks almost alien, very unique though, want to see where it's going

UCT - Interesting, but maybe a little too elegant, grunge her up a little

Xaya - Love the color Palette, very nice work.

spudstudios - Love the exaggerated style, makes me think of a Star Wars cantina for some reason, lots of attitude.

marioucci - Like the original composition, ready for some color!

jpedro - dig the scene, lots of story there.

cmalidore - nice pose and sketch, I think you've really got somethin here, keep developing it.

Sorry to anyone I missed, these things are pretty time consuming. To anyone having anatomy trouble, remember to use reference and think about form and developing the figure as a whole, don't get caught up in certain areas.

All in all great posts guys, participating in these weeklies is super motivational. Thanks to everyone giving critiques, it helps to keep us focused. Never forget how fortunate we all are to be a part of such great community of artists. HOORAY for CA!!:yayca:

thanks for the C&C
reading the inspirational threads is not helping, thou wont have time to finish, but extremely fun to participate and try to push the idea and concept further.
nicked poshspice comment of a cigar and gave it to the co-pilot, nestle comfybly between the cleavage, that looks a bit artificial since there's no wrinkles from having an "alien" object stuck in between (not that she needs any boob jobs... hmmm), dyed hair, tanned with bikini tanned lines (tanned Jamaican??? interesting to render) Japanese school girl leg warmers and uniform shoes will have to go, i think the pose itself is Japanese enough LOL will work on the anatomy to make it work better, the twisted torso and lower body seems to belong to a contortionist; nail art; box of intergalactic contraband...

PatriciaS: need to know the story on this, curiosity aroused.

CarolineBradley: need an updated wip :P

septomin: nice touch on the samurai sword

JakkaS: great looking sketches, hmm i might have been subconsciously being influenced by tentacles and multi -eyes aliens from yours and other's sketches....

The Whistler: nice sketch, again i might have been subconsciously influenced by the gun weilding thing....

DECYPL: great looking sketches and even greater looking update!!!

Poshspice: yeah, get it outta system, otherwise the image will bug you :P the interaction between the main character and the alien co-pilot is great, believable that they are a team and not a pet/ master/ employee thing!

Noah Bradley: same here, even if we dont finish, still great fun to push the idea a bit and i also used the exercise to check my preconceived ideas! keep going!

Hideyoshi: nice quick sketch on the whole composition, setting, lighting. not so apparent is the ethnicity and the run-down operation.

Vorace: the maestro of intergalactic collectibles!!!!

VampireHungerStrike: jamaican punky brewster, kidding, like the freckles! hope to see some interaction between the character and the alien, if its going to be included to add to the story telling/ character establishing thing...

daestwen: doing this c&c make me realize that there's nothing original in me :frustrated:, i think i'm subconsciously influenced by your grin/ blink facial expression... i hope i dont see one with tongue sticking out and licking her gun.....

Howie: crow bar!!!.... now that's bad ass, who needs gun!!! the mood is set, love to see how you bring this further!!!

tuber: the co-pilot is a bit passive but then again the cuteness probably tells something about this character. her facial expression is also a bit cool but not "bad-ass", unless intentional.

Pixeltuner: yeah!! the ethnicity is sublime.

tomwaits4noman: the concept for the alien is refreshing, but needs to be "one", at the moment is two beings, one cute one flesh eating attached to one another.... maybe a Siamese twin anatomy would serve better?

DecayingLolita: yeah, very animae lolitaish feel to it, the pose and the hair do enhances that feeling, only thing missing will be the jamaican ragae tribal feel?

Noah Bradley: need more, but maybe spoiled light panel somewhere or flickering light source, or dim setting to suggest run down? at the moment its looking a bit... posh.

Jason Rainville: nice touch on the butterfly flyingsuit! instead of 2 control stick, can we have katana instead? :P also the co-pilot have a human face, is it a transplant to a robotic buddy body?

InFlame: the face, i think is too "manly", actually like the flat rendering better than the face!

ikuru : prefer the helmet thing better, hav the sleek avenger feel, better than the laracroft update! that's just me personal opinion

kiwigarbage: afro!!! great descriptions!! just need to translate those into the illustration.

Sequential76: wow! easily my fav thus far. love the smuggling of universe!!!! that's bad ass, but somehow the updated rendering lost the edginess to the first sketched facial expression. she's transform from bad ass to cat walk model!!! please bring her back!!

CKLamb: great colour!!!! i guess the co-pilot is making her going for the "i give up" expression, cant wait to see the update!!!

Flipnastywebby: i think the pose is nice, trying to be lady like but camouflaged underneath is a bad ass intergalactic smuggler from her grin!

Chate Noire: i can use your gun wielding hand on the upper left sketch for reference later... cough... back to the sketch, everything is great, just need to add bad-ass :P

Jska: scarf! for fashion or hihg-tech cloth that can function as camouflage device during escape? pose is not giving much character to our girl!

mr. m : the pose and setting are looking really good and promises a lot!!! please push it further!

lukavi : another favourite, top notch costume design, like the probably the best brew of the galaxy!

kischi: this is scary, i'm seeing the same crates of contraband! LOL does it mean that i've subconsciously registering your sketch in my mind.... scary!!! the pose on the crate, expecting her facial expression to be gleaming with satisfaction of another cargo well done :P

REKLAS: i really like the school girl skirt!!! and the leg armour too :P

JHuntsman: the pose requires some anatomical reference

MJ_Alcazar: push the facial expression further, use some reference on the net ! imagine you're the photographer asking her to give you the expression that you want!

andreas_V : very shinjuku japanese street punk!!!! maybe a better physiques to hint on the jamaican linage?

UCT: the hair style and eye piece are nice touches, need to sort out the anatomy before going further?

Decepticon217: best to do a total revamp, if you manage to ditch the earlier imagery in your head and come up with a new approach, that exercise itself would have been quite an achievement!

Carnifex: great pose and perspective, i agree with poshspice on the cigar thing, she would be way cooler if holding a thick and heavy cigar that's tipping towards the ground... or is there artificial gravity in the space cargo... i dunno :bashful:

mimer: great concept!! you'll need to really push your anatomy to make this happen! hmm... maybe try to tilt her head backwards and sideways a little (more like a shrug), and she's like looking at the pursue with an innocent eye look? gun just hanging on her index finger and dangling?

Xaya : i think the pilot thing is ok, look at yuna of FFX-2, she's wearing a kimono (modified) and still get to pilot battle ships!

Flipnastywebby: second poshspice c&c... can i do that? maybe lifting her skirt to reveal the alien co-pilot!!!! gulp

Miles_: she looks like native american indians (avoided red fearing its an offensive slang), maybe a fuller lips??....

spudstudios: great sketch on the ethnicity!

Saleem: done hide her samurai sword :P i guess focus more on the character than the whole composition if the challenge seems to much to handle at times. maybe she can sliced open the whole ship with her katana in a ship dock? (like Morpheus in matrix?)

marioucci: wooow... radical pose, there'll be clothings on later? reminds me of afro samurai....

Daray : great attitude and facial jeweleries!! your surfer dude alien co-pilot will compliment her adventure well!!!

Kreegz85: she's all bad ass. but introduce a bit of cuteness as suggested by the brief, doesnt have to be the souvenirs she collects!

dollfaced_joker : a long way to go! can seems to read our ideas behind he character. maybe if you think about her pose, character. mood, costumes etc and the facial expression will come naturally!??

WTFsteph: costume is promising so far, be careful on the polished custom tailored attire, not very "run-down"

jpedro : great interaction between the main character and her co-pilot! tells so much more additional info about her character

cmalidore: the taped together gun captures the brief!

timothee: she should be raising an eye brow (thinking whatever being who did this is not going stand a chance against her quickness etc), and looking to side step into the opening... needs to be a more tense position, too relax in the face of flowing blood!

scottmcd : female han solo, nice reference, just dont give her a chewie...

Villa: delicious looking sketch, cant wait to vote for ya!

Jefita: more of the co-pilot cum hairdresser idea and interaction not only captures the brief but also adds to it! (i think anyway :P)

gtgauvin: hehe nice school girl's skirt, otaku??!!! :P

dawnusllaw : looking all innocent and vulnerable eh? LOL

rcon: woah!!! nice pose, the hands is hiding something? :)

weeeell i thought she's be having a doobie...what with her being jamaican and all...;)
general question: i consciously tried to stay away from the "small and cute tank girl in the future" look, because i figured almost everyone is gonna go for that. is that a good idea? oreg? or should i go more for "stereotype that any bad art director wants"?
(my try so far is more like grace jones)

Hey all...here is my first CHOW entry and I must say, this is definitely taking me waaayyy out of my comfort zone. So thats a great thing. I've never really done a female before...I am horrible at hands...I am not very good with feet...I need to work on my faces and I haven't done too much gun concepts...so here's my first "real" go at all of it. And I must say, I am definitely excited and up for the challenge!!!

Sorry for the horrible quality scan, my drawing is way too light at the moment and I have a cheap scanner, so the balance is way off. Going to clean her up, add some more detail, clean lines, etc...scan it in and probably finish her off in photoshop.

As for the big gun...it's not all a gun. The only real gun part is the small barrel on the top...the big cannon looking thing is a device that she uses to latch on to cargo and then using the power cells and 24th century technology, the cargo is snatched up Ghostbusters style and stored in the power cells. This allows her to carry cargo in miniature form to help her smuggling. The boots are a fancy little device that uses gravitational and anti-gravitational forces to either secure her in place (like when using the collector) or to help her jump/run, etc...everything is kind of run by these power cells...they can store (like in the gun and in the backpack) or they can provide energy (like in the boots and for her ammo clip)...just different type of cells for different jobs. I'll go more in depth once I finally reveal her :)

probably not the best of person to answer, but in such an exercise, the brief is supreme (edit: supreme in the "giving the whole thing a framework" sense :P), wheather its stereotype or original take, its how far one can push the envelope of the brief, you can also try and create something like a parallel brief (which i tend to do during uni, which i mistakenly thought was thinking outside the box, instead it was just another box) but as long as your parallel brief remains convincing, which i find more difficult. and takes the tutors/ approval person more energy, commitment and setting aside their own preconceived ideas/ stereotyping to be able to help you to push your ideas further. ultimately depends on what you want to get out from the exercise i guess...

as for art directors, i'm not one myself, but knows some friends who are, i also pop the question to them, but understanding their job better means they have to juggle with talent at hand, meeting cleint's needs and BRIEF(from client or formulate another one), deadlines, cost etc, dont be so quick to judge if they've not push their work further :P

edit: i guess what i'm trying to say amidst all these babble is that stereotyping is not necessary something to avoid (unless the brief says so :P), maybe we start out the process and pen down our initial idea, then we might find it too stereotype, then you ask yourself, why is that so, then you go back to explore the background etc, and maybe you come back and say nah, this is stereotype, this character could be like this and be more convincing and fit the brief or it can be yeah, this is what this character should look like, for numerous reasons. for instant, this character maybe trying to "typecast" him or herself into certain stereotype image, maybe thru his or her experience, maybe its the up bringing, maybe its just fashionable at that time or period, depending if that manifestation is important ( again depending on the brief ) if its stereotype by design, then maybe its ok?

take batman, the character bruce wayne can be seen as hiding behind a stereotype "mask" (rich playboy couldnt careless about social problems etc.), bruce wayne also has the preconceived notion that putting mask, black robes etc would scare criminal off (more like telling the whole world what he thinks is scary :P) or were they bob kane's preconceived ideas? hmmm... maybe derailed and bad example.... that for listening to the dark knight soundtrack for more than 24 hours....

looks like we have another great round here. well, I probably won't finish it because I'll be gone for the labor day weekend...I'll do as much as I can.

Here's a WIP, I don't like her clothes, I could definitely push the style a bit more. I'm not happy with the alien technician ether...But i don't want to make him "humanoid" as in 2 legs 2 arms and all that...

hrm...in conclusion,i want to stay away from cliche, but i'm not sure if that'll be an advantage in this case, judging by the other entries.

Daray - looking good. The antennae and the smiley face are a nice touch. The colors are pretty good, are you going to add some shadows? I think you'd be able to see both hands. Her left hand should come up on her other arm, I think.

Yup will be adding the shades too. Going to try and keep it sort of a 'cell shaded' effect I think. And come to mention it, your right about the hand! I looked at the pencil sketch and it was acutally on it, must have forgotten to ink it :P

a few random crits (sorry, not all). And thanks everyone for their c&c! :)
deastwen: yup, much agreed - that torso area is really weird. I am still rather inexperienced when it comes to anatomy and rendering figures... The whole piece was painted, not aided by initial drawing so I was sloppy and didn't use reference although I should have. I don't wanna touch up the piece any further also. If it won't be in the poll, so be it :P I know it's not very close to the brief as well...

PatriciaS: nice poses, good flow to them!

JakkaS: always cool work from you! Can't wait for your render madness! :)

DECYPL: great! Cool pose and costume design - especially those stripey pants add to it :) I actually liked the bandana-head...

Poshspice: sweet as always! Nice tatooing and that leg gun nicely adds to the silhouette! Also great how you've integrated her sidekick so they kinda merge together into one entity (if that makes any sense...)!
I like No 2 the most so far I think...
As for 'orz' --> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orz

Vorace: superb! Always a crazy design with your work which is great! Love all the gagdets and accessories! And that mohawk adds a lotta character! I think you could fix the perspective on the spiked foot so you see it more from the top...

deastwen: very solid! I am looking foward! Could look a little more sci-fi I believe...

Howie: haha, freaky girl! I think she needs a lot more design cues. Right now she looks too ordinary besides the haircut. Spice her up with accessories, interesting costume design!

Pixeltuner: nicely following the brief here! Just finish her up, looking good already! :)

JasonRainville: that jetpack sure is an eye catcher, great! Very cool copilot also! I think the anatomy could use some work on her hip/upper leg area which seems to be too elongated right now.

kiwigarbage: nice one! Full of expression! Those slouchy boots and the arm-gloves are great, so is the assymmetrical loincloth.

Sequential76: nice pose and angle! Working hard on the rendering! I think it needs more value range right now -decide on a strong primary light scource!
Slick costume design!

CKLamb: looking promising, I like the scenic setup! Already giving off a lot of emotion!

ChateNoire: nice, great lineart! nothing to crit, this is coming along very well!

lukavi: awesome! You do some of the most original characters out there! :) Looking forward to the finish!

Xaya: coming along nicely! I like how you try to bring out her japanese part :) Great lighting! She actually looks like falling over though (I do see that she is supporting herself with her arm)... you might wanna change her right leg's positioning.

cmalidore: looking interesting, curious to where this is going!

timothee: Face is great! Looks a little flat-butted thogh ;) (maybe intentional?) Those suspenders are a neat touch!

Villa: awesome face/head design! Also love her sidekick! I think her right breast wouldn't/shouldn't be visible like this -makes her look a lil too 'twisted' Can't wait for the coloring!

Mr. M: nice progress! Keep in mind the 3/4th rule - you might wanna extend the frame downward so you see more of her legs! :) Add some details will ya?

sorry, couldn't cover everyone's, maybe later!

ok next update, added the co-pilot, something like a six-arm-frog-whatever-creature.

I will still add some technique equipment to increase the future atmosphere!

448993

@DecayingLolita: I really like that, try to push the colors, add a soft light or overlay layer (if you work with PS) and do some test with vivid/ saturated colors. Also in case of composition.

@mr. m : i dig her mimic, it really shows the character which was descripted.
The black suit makes sense as a smuggler, but the chow info tells about a crazy/vivid fashion style....

@feifeicreate: Good start!!! I am not happy with the posing of the main character, although correct, it doesnīt add something to the story, which should be the focus. The alien shows his abbilities and position but the lady just shows her attidude...

@DSAzeppelin : Love this, although it alters a bit from the description (she isnīt a warrior with a damn big MG killing all people). Nevertheless i like the pose alot, next to the details everywhere!

@cmalidore: Promising, great pose. Do you wanna add the alien? Or is it the scribble in the background? Update!!!

@JSpayde : I think someone already mentioned: google is your friend! or flickr.com or whatever!

Poshspice, DECYPL, Kreegz85, zenichi, Hideyoshi - Thanks for the comments!

A few random impressions:

DSAzeppelin, her pose is really nice and the clothes and all the small accessories work wonderfully for me. The head feels a little weird, and this mohawk/ponytail hairdo make her skull look a little distorted. I'd love to see where this is going.

Xaya, I like her outfit design and color, it's definitely very punky. I think maybe the boots are a little too much, but on the whole she makes for a cool character.

D@niel, that's gorgeous. Love the tonal work, and both designs are cool (the alien is crazy :)). Right now her right arm seems a little too long, but it's probably just because the hands are still sketchy. Good stuff, waiting to see more.

Villa, LOVE the head and torso area. Great design and attention to detail and the pose and expression are perfect. The bottom part of her body doesn't work as as well as the upper part in my opinion, in terms of both design and pose. For starters, I think the left leg should be firmly planted on the floor; it will give her more balance and make the pose stronger.

gtgauvin, I really like your scene and how it tells a story so clearly. I'd love to see this completed.

A little bit more. I hope I'll have this wrapped up by Sunday.

@cmalidore: Promising, great pose. Do you wanna add the alien? Or is it the scribble in the background? Update!!!

Yeah that's the scribble (y'know how us artists are - we make enough lines to confuse people haha) until tonight. Gonna be kinda buggy, four limbs, I'm thinking those gecko eyes, and the bug abdomen thang. Maybe some fun markings. Maybe I'll give it a too-too.... we'll see ;)

Hokay, Crits continued yet again! (from post 89 and118, so if your's ain't here, it may be there.)

Pixeltuner: I think I've seen later iterations of this later on, but. So far, so good. Don't be lazy, though - leave just enough space at the bottom so you aren't cropping right through her foot - there's really no reason to! The pointing hand it a little weird, but this is an initial sketch, so I'll let it slide. ;)

UCT: Pretty sure there's a later version of this one, too. Interesting direction, comment more on the later one.

VampireHungerStrike: Nice sketch so far, careful with the legs there - the one on the left (her right) is looking a little akward and too long. Sluggler looks good, but you might want to include equipment that would show how he's able to co-pilot this ship.

daestwen: yug...

Howie: The anatomy in her shoulders is a little strange... I think they are too high/far back. Also, why a crowbar...?

tuber: She looks straight out of the Caribbean! You might want to space her up a bit. ;)

Pixeltuner (2): I actually like this one a lot better! I know it's not as ambitious as the first one, but she has some great attitude. You're cropping right through her feet again, though. :P Don't be lazy!

tomwaits4noman: Both poses look a tad awkward. (In the right one, why is she holding her arm out like that...?)

DecayingLolita: Glad to see you blocked in that arm! Not sure what else to say at this point - it's looking fairly messy. Keep at it and I'm sure I'll have more to say later...

Noah Bradley: Nice blocking, it's coming along.

Jason Rainville: My advice from post 118 still applies. :P

InFlame: Outlines look good... Her face is a bit off, but I think mostly you have to try to get the ethnic elements in there - she doesn't really look jamaican *or* japanese, right now.

ikuru: Nice head sketches, so far!

kiwigarbage: Watch the angle of her chest in the third one - her breasts should be angled relatively the same as her shoulders, so we should be able to see both!

Sequential76: Nice progress so far, keep it up.

CKLamb: Not much to say at the stage, keep working at it.

Flipnastywebby: Good start, though I think the shape of her head needs a little work...

Chate Noire: Niiiiiice. Not much to say here. :P

zenichi: Good sketches, good sketches, pretty sure I saw stuff later on, so I'll comment more on that.

Jska: Looking good, but why is she holding her arm out like that? Is she leaning on something?

mr. m: Nice wip, pretty sure you have a later version, will comment more on that.

lukavi: Looking awesome as always. Fiiiiniiish iiiit.

kischi: Her breasts look a little strange right now... (And I'm assuming you're replacing the top head with the one on her?) Also, careful, her hands are a little small.

REKLAS: Lookin' good so far, keep it up.

JHuntsman: Your anatomy is looking a tad funky... Her head looks too big, hands a bit too small... (though if you shrink the head they'll probably look more the right size). Also, her right (our left) leg is off, either the angle or the length...

MJ_Alcazar: Glad the advice helped, I'll comment more on the later version then. :)

andreas_V: Bizarre! Can't tell if the anatomy issues are style choices or unintentional... Either way, her feet are looking a tad too strange, so you might want to balance her out a little bit.

UCT (2): Here's the later version! Hokay. I think her neck is too wide... Also, you've entirely forgotten her clavicle (collar bone)! You've also really flattened out the back of her head, so be careful there!

Xaya: I know I've seen several more recent version of this, so I'll keep my comments for them.

Decepticon217: Please remember the 3/4ths rule! We need to see a bit more of her legs than that. Also, the way her legs are positioned right now, it looks like she would fall over. Make sure the balance works!

Carnifex: Nice mock up, keep working at it. Hard for me to say anything until you clean it up a bit.

mimer: Her anatomy is looking very awkward... Especially with the arms, and the face - it's looking very flat and at the wrong angle. My advice is to find some reference with similar poses and work with those in mind.

Flipnastywebby (2?): Ooh, I like the kimono-thing going on. Nice choice. Keep it up, it's looking good so far.

Miles_: Nice, I'm liking it. I'm not so sure that you're getting her ethnicity across, though... She's reading more middle-east to me. There just a *tiny* kink in her right arm (our left) in the armour of her lower arm.. do you see it? on the under side? Where it looks like it bends up and back down again? It's making her arm look a little broken.

spudstudios: Good start so far, she's got an interesting figure, I like it. Not too much to say until you work on it a bit further. My suggestion would be to give the canvas a little more space on the left, though, I feel like you're cropping her a little too close.

Whew, enough for now... You guys wear me out. :)

A few comments since not all styles are something I'm comfortable offering advice on... I barely work well in my own haha. None the less this is just recent pieces, I'll dig further back later today.

Arthemis IX: Diggin the layout, that's one that we definitely aren't seeing in here right now which I like. Though I fear that your color relations may be confusing at that first glance. May want to define the lighting a bit more so that she pops out. Though I'm not certain on this, a second opinion would be good :)

Chate Noire: I adore the personality you were able to capture! Damn that's nice.

Daroz: At this point in your image I'm feeling like the alien co-pilot is visually more interesting than the female - pulling out focus, wouldn't take much to shift it and I'm sure you're planning on it since it's obviously still coming along, but I wanted to voice it to make sure.

D@niel: Your brush strokes are beautiful and offer a real life to the image. This is one that I'm seriously looking forward to seeing completed.

Xaya: Very unique feeling, I like it. Looking forward to seeing the completed piece here since I'm sure it'll offer a large amount of variety to the lineup which is always good! Great design.

DecayingLolita: I agree that some extra color would spice this up a lot. Imagine the console glowiness you could use on that.

mr. m: Unfortunately you'll likely be pushed into showing more of the figure - but I do seriously like the pose and the level of realism in it. It has a very tangible feel to it that is very cool. I'd love to see some more saturated colors in spots though, something to liven it up? Sorta unsure of where I'd apply that though.

DSAzeppelin: Welcome to CHOW! My biggest concern is how flat your image feels right now, I'd love to see some more depth - but ultimately that will come once you expand that comfort zone. We're all about learning here :). Make sure you're focusing on that internal structure as much as those clean outlines. If you get that foundation nailed the rest becomes pretty darn simple and fun.

JSpayde: Foundation foundation foundation. Without a layout or structure we have little to build off of, so push your sketches further. This so far is just a running girl but we have no real story telling in it. Make us get into the character through design and action. Think about the gear you would have if you were in that person's position - you yourself as a real person have stuff right? Well so does this person, a true defined life of smuggling and merc work - so let us see it. What little trinkets might she wear for fun, or to make her job easier? Where would she be located? Tell us a story :D. her anatomy is problematic though offhand - work on the inner structure of your figure before building up and you'll have a much stronger figure. In this case she has wide shoulders and the arm that we can see plainly has sleeve folds that make the arm look noodley. It needs some shaping where it would bunch at the inner elbow and what not. I like the approach though and look forward to where you take it. Keep rockin it out!

Anybody coloring on white: Your colors aren't harmonizing well because the white is distorting the saturation levels. I highly recommend coloring on a neutral tone page if you can. Don't forget the roots of your color and how they relate to one another.

@DSAzeppelin : Love this, although it alters a bit from the description (she isnīt a warrior with a damn big MG killing all people). Nevertheless i like the pose alot, next to the details everywhere!

Thanks man!

One quick thing to clarify though, I put this in my post, but that isn't a damn big Machine Gun....it's a damn big cargo carrier :)

She does have a little gun on top for defense, but that's not the purpose of the "gun". That big thing on the bottom that looks like a rocket launcher, actually shoots out this grapple device that latches onto her cargo. Then using a converter and random 24th century technology that I haven't thought of yet, it kind of snatches up the cargo and suck it into those power cells that you see on the bottom of the gun. It kind of works like in Ghostbusters, how they would suck up the ghosts into the boxes.

She can carry cargo in the power cells on the bottom of the gun, or the ones in her backpack...helps consolodate, carry more stuff and shrink things down to smuggle and get past security. But of course, there is a limit to the size of what she can shrink down. You won't see her shrinking a massive gun ship or 80 crates or anythign like that. It's not THAT powerful.

Thank you to...Chate Noire. As for teh head/face...like I said, I'm new to this and I can see that too. Only problem is that I've erased about 80 times trying to figure out the face part. I think I like the face now, need to fix the back of the head and make that look sharper...looks funky right now like you said. I think it's just how massive I drew the back of her skull, so we'll see.

And thanks Cmalidore! I'll definately be adding more internal details once I start my final pass to add details. What do you mean by more depth though? Is it just the outline vs the internal structure....oor what exactly?

Sorry for the confusion - I don't always explain things too well early in the morning. I barely know who I am in the morning ;).

Depth wise I think it's just the lineart doing it right now, color will likely provide it, but at the moment she feels really flat, like a technical drawing of a building. The lineweight is very similar all throughout so there's nothing really saying "this leg is behind the other" for example beyond really staring at it to sort out the lines. So yeah, I think it's just the lineart stage but none the less it's worth looking at a bit.

Awesome...thanks man! I'll definately work on that...I've always been intrigued by lineweight in drawings but have never really been able to put it to good use. I'll definately be shading and/or coloring this piece, so hopefully that'll help out with the depth. I completely see what you mean with the back leg and everything.

@Decepticon217: the character comes a long really nicely. Well with the workflow, doing details in the first stage of a painting doesnīt make any sense. I know the temptation is huge. But keep in mind that first thing to do is to think about a composition an arrangement and to focus on the story u wanna tell. Drawing a character and doing the enviroment afterwards is a hard task to fit in nicely, donīt you thing? Of course this is CHOW and the main focus is the character but without a good composition it doesnīt have the impact. Nevertheless i sometimes still start my paintings with doing the eyes....

Keep it going!!

Thanks for the crits and comments, guys.

Trying to make a window into the lives of these characters. I'm hoping to define these characters by what they put in themselves rather than how much stuff they can put on themselves.:yum:

Here's the new direction. Any thoughts and crits totally welcome! :) It's kind of like what if you turned a greyhound bus into a space ship, i know it's sparse but I think the idea kind of comes across in the meager beginnings. I also started playing with some color options, looking at it now, i think the Jamaican theme is a bit obvious.

I updated on page five, if anyone wants to take a look. :)

Xaya - really coming along nicely. The alien's adorable. I like the little control pad her right arm is going after.

Tommoy - hey, good start. Watch her right hand. The bottom half looks a little disconnected from the rest of her. :) I like the grasshopper looking alien, cute.

Saleem - Like the purple fro. Her left leg should be coming towards us more. Also, is she looking out of a window, or is that some kind of wallpaper or is she out in space? If it is a window, maybe add a window frame or something.

Decepticon217 - I like her pose. It's probably just a personal thing, but I'm really curious about what her feet and shoes would be like. It might be nice to see.

JSpayde - Look up some references on running poses. Right now, she looks like she's tripping or falling. I like her jacket.

Arthemis IX - wow, it looks amazing. I like the story in it. I'm not too sure she looks jamaican or japanese right now. I hate saying things like that without a suggestion to go with it, but I'm not really sure why right now. Maybe it's her face?

Chate Noir - I like her! I love the little snapshot of them in the cockpit. Great stuff!

daroz- my attention first went to the co-pilot, whom I think is a way too human looking. Then, it went to her second, maybe in the next pic, put her in front or something. I'm not getting a jamaican or a japanese vibe from her either. But, I really like your characters, I just think they're a little far from brief. :)

WTFSteph - I think that her left hand should probably be out more from her body, right now it looks really unnatural. And uncomfortable. I like her head. The helmet is nice, and she has a nice face.

The Whistler - wow, she looks great. Very nice face. I think it looks like both jamaican and japanese, good work!

D@aniel - she looks good, the alien is great! I like him. On her right shoulder, I think the shoulder pad should be turned towards us a little more, or make it look like it's cutting into her arm a little. :)

DecayingLolita -she's looking beautiful, but I can't really tell what's going on. Is that her co-pilot behind her? If she was in the cockpit, why would he be behind her and draping over the chair?

mr. m - She's looking really great. Wonderful work. Maybe extend the drawing down to her feet, because I'd hate it not to meet the 3/4 rule. Also, her right hand needs a little work. The fingers look more knobby then they should. Maybe straighten up the bottom part of her fingers, make them look like they're pointing backward a little. But, really great work!

feifeicreate - I like the the story you have going on. Personally, I like the little alien creature. I hope you get time to finish.

DSAzeppelin - I like it, she looks really cool.

cmalidore - looking great so far!

Jefita - looks beautiful, I like the monkey alien thing.

rcon - looks pretty good so far.

gtgauvin - cool! I like the whole scene. And your lines are nice.

ImaginaryColleen - looking good so far, like the colors.

VampireHungerStrike - I really like how real your ideas seem. Even with a futuristic theme! Good job.

This thing is taking on a life of its own...not sure it'll get finished in time, but here's to hoping.

Bad Bones talking her co-pilot into one more run through the belt, perhaps? (Her co-pilot's name is Gordon, whom she lovingly refers to as Gordo.)

Scaled the scene back to get this thing finished.

Hey Jakkas Doing really great! :)
I would work some on the breast area, not to sure that sharp angle there is working in the designs benefit, also her left arm looks a bit shorter than the right one. Looks like the wrist is missing a bit wwhere the hand is.
Also Maybe pull down her vaginal area a bit, ;) also it looks a little like shes hovering... All this said I really, really like it. :D
Great work!

Here's what I got, will try to find some time tomorrow for color, but then thats it, plz, any crit/suggestions are welcome. ty.

dawnusllaw: I took a look at your image vs. your reference, and I don't think you've broken away enough. It basically looks like the same girl, but with a patch on her sleeve and a gun holster.

You're allowed to use reference, but this should not be a crutch. We should be able to see where *your* imagination and *your* design come into the image - not have to struggle to find it. I would suggest keeping the pose and figure in mind, but do another drawing and change it up a bit.

You won't learn anything if all you do is copy! Push yourself, you'll thank yourself later. :)

yeah I agree there are some great entries but not enough of them look Jamaican / Japanese.

I would dare to say REKLAS has a great painting but she does not quite look Japanese and definitely not Jamaican. The colors are good though, just tweak the features of the face and you'll be golden.

One of my friends is Jamaican/Japanese and you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between him and a Jamaican.

Racial mixtures can get very, very fuzzy, especially with skin tones. A lot of the asian girls I know have very, very white skin tones, so it's perfectly possible that offspring could lean on the side of the japanese skin tone.

Also please keep in mind that this is 2400, there's going to be a bit mixing-up anyway.

I'm expecting to see a wide range of racial variance in this round, but please don't start bickering over whose looks more ethnic. If they looked like they stepped out of lapland, we'll probably notice when we do the poll. We obviously want people to take elements from both cultures and ethnicities, but we didn't specify *how* to do that, and I don't really want you guys limiting each other either.

Newly revamped version!

Kept the afro (of course), and lost the John Lennon glasses in favor for a skull patch.

Also added some essential carrying stuff..how could I forget that? A thief needs somewhere to put her goods, eh?

Hope it's an improvement! Tell me how it is?

::EDIT:: Oregano kindly reminded me that our character is not a thief, but a smuggler. Therefore her "goody bags" are simply transportation devices as of now. There's stuff in them :) ::EDIT::

Yo DeKal, its looking good but there are a few tiny proportion areas that would benefit the whole image if you fixed it. The groin is kinda too high, if you lower it a tiny bit and flatten it out. The shoulder of the arm raised seems too close to the body, it looks like if she lowered it she would have too smaller shoulder. The inidividual features on the face look great, but I think the gap between the nose and mouth is too long, and the nose is possibly a little too long, Just play around with them and see what looks best. Good luck dude.

Well, heres the rehashed version. Still a bit messy, but I'm hoping once I get started on color things will turn out clean. A little iffy about her right arm, and that shotgun is probably a bit off. Crits on this new version would be greatly appreciated :)

Edit: Well, started coloring. Liking where its going but I probably won't finish by the deadline. Doesn't matter though, I had a lot of fun trying something this round and I'll probably work on finishing this some more. Maybe my first portfolio piece.

And just so its not one way...

Reklas - Dig the drawing; a bit nit picky but her gun + holster seem to be floating off just a tad.
Zenichi - Great gun-pointing pose but I don't know about a topless smuggler, she's bound to get plenty of unwanted attention. :)
Kiwigarbage - Love that afro/70's style look.
MJ_Alcazar - Great work with the colors, maybe start to try working on a neutral toned canvas?
Adam Schumpart - Looking cool, looking cool. Nice how you slipped in that samurai chest plate.
Sozo - Great alien, great character, only thing is, his smiling pretty big having her foot on his hand.
Dimagyan - Can't wait to see the finished piece
Carnifax - Squash them bugs!
Beelow - Nice work on the space station, and is her partner that robot? Try to make it pop more as its a little blended with the background.

I took elements of the three sketches and trawled for ref to suit the pose, but I think I'm finally happy with it.. I hope I've taken elements of Japanese and Jamaican features! Although please please please if you spot anything else let me know, cause I want to really push myself this time.

The background will be a cockpit with the police outside the window bay.. the co pilot is trying to warn our cunning (yet bad spelling and vain in front of the artist) smuggler.

I hope he's not too goon-ist!! Thanks everyone whom has giving me invaluable crits, I couldn't improve with out them!!

Hi crimson_shape, welcome to CHOW :)

Front and back view, or even multiple views of a character are accepted, however the illustration also needs to be at least 3/4's of the character (head, torso, waist and at least some leg).

Here's a link to the CHOW Guidelines (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=117390), which should cover any other questions you may have.

Xaya This may be a little late in the game at this point, but I'll throw it out there anyway: I really like your Smuggler character - however, for as much as I like your smuggler, I dislike your co-pilot because it looks just way, way too generic for me (several of the entries suffer from this). It's not a big deal as the character isn't the focus of this week's CHOW, so it really doesn't matter in this case.

Specifically (and you'll find I'm a stickler for things like this :P ) the appendages - hands/feet - are human. That means somehow this little green guy has gotten primate specific appendages while evolving a hundred lightyears away. Probably hit up the local BodyShoppe (C'mon on down to Steve's Olde Tyme BodyShope! We got the partz YOU need! cause Dead is Dead, Partz is Partz, and Fresh Dead is Fresh Partz! New inventory daily. See your doctor before transplanting. Some side affects. Not all Parts fit all people. All parts delivered direct from ER within 1 hour. Cryogenically frozen to preserve freshness.) I mean, I know those ads are hard to ignore, but ... this guy needs to exercise a little self control. The next thing you know, he'll be sporting a huge old honker! :P

All in good fun. :medusachow:

sooo basically that means I can't work in color for this piece :(

Gotta get my butt shading now...
