Xaya This may be a little late in the game at this point, but I'll throw it out there anyway: I really like your Smuggler character - however, for as much as I like your smuggler, I dislike your co-pilot because it looks just way, way too generic for me (several of the entries suffer from this). It's not a big deal as the character isn't the focus of this week's CHOW, so it really doesn't matter in this case.

Specifically (and you'll find I'm a stickler for things like this :P ) the appendages - hands/feet - are human. That means somehow this little green guy has gotten primate specific appendages while evolving a hundred lightyears away. Probably hit up the local BodyShoppe (C'mon on down to Steve's Olde Tyme BodyShope! We got the partz YOU need! cause Dead is Dead, Partz is Partz, and Fresh Dead is Fresh Partz! New inventory daily. See your doctor before transplanting. Some side affects. Not all Parts fit all people. All parts delivered direct from ER within 1 hour. Cryogenically frozen to preserve freshness.) I mean, I know those ads are hard to ignore, but ... this guy needs to exercise a little self control. The next thing you know, he'll be sporting a huge old honker! :P

All in good fun. :medusachow:
(seriously, tho - give him some tats or something)
~Oreg.

Thanks a lot for your thoughts Oregano, really appreachiate it!
Although i didnīt want to great some unique alien, which differs completely from human anatomy, your words make a lot of sense. The main issue is the similarities to human hands and feed, right? Intentionally i wanted to create a more froggy like character, but somehow it went human.
I will have a look in the COW thread for inspiration, cause films like Star Wars or anything havenīt heard your words, too. IMO!!

Thanks and see you soon!

I've been having an insane number of problems with my tablet, and finally fixed it.

Anyway, I've stuck on a couple of small accessories, most importantly, the cards hanging from her glove- her trade secret. To most, the idea of credit cards is completely antiquated, no one even considers them, they seem like a novel decoration. However, she's programmed them to breach security codes and demagnatize items, as well as to enter space stations that functioned thousands of years ago completely on security cards. She discovered that the stations have the programs still intact, but the cards had all been destroyed...except for the couple she found :) That's her technique in smuggling through galaxies and whatnot.

Anyway, that's my longwinded explanation.

Also, she's got a very neopunk neon aesthetic. I rather like it :)

---

Some crits for you guys! Awesome entries, this has been fun.

REKLAS: I love that skull on her skirt, and the helmet. I'm not sure about how static her hair is..maybe some more fluid lines?

zenichi: Several strange things going on with her anatomy...the extended leg is a bit too long, also bring it forward, her hip furthest from the viewer should be slightly visible...and watch the chin, I think it's been squished.

MJ Alcazar: She's got a rather winning expression! And i like her hairdo..in the final version, I suggest getting rid of a lot of that heavy black from the pencils...it mucks up the colors.

Adam Schumpert: Love the cocked eyebrow and the lip ring. I think she could do with a bit more hip width.

JSpayde: Her arms are a bit stiff, and her facial features could be moved up on her head, they're not quite proportionate. Cool design!

Xaya: The colors are very nice! I love the little alien :) The arm holding the remote is in kind of an impossible position. I think if you lift up the elbow and incorporate some foreshortening you can fix that...not sure if that makes sense.

sozo: Her bellybutton isn't centered in her abdomen...and her face doesn't follow the angle of her head. You can use the move tool to skew it back into place.

dawnusllaw: I like your pencil style! Her neck is a bit thin.

Deception217: I like her gauntlets and glowy fingernails. I really think her face could do with some more shading, especially around the nose, right now it really just looks like nostrils without the rest of the nose...

Jeremy Hoffman: Fun colors, and an interesting style!

Dollfaced Joker: It would behoove you to go in and fix up your lineart. The dodge tool works well for this.

Erick Willand: I like the dreadlock pigtails, and the mask on the little guy, very cool. I think that her face is a little long.

Whoo...hope that helps.

Comment on my work please? :)

Hideyoshi, my painter friend said the same thing about light source and ambience, "too monochromatic", he went in and did things to my entry to show how to liven it up that made my jaw drop. So now I'm tring to do it. :)

My one constructive crit that I have on a bunch of these is to mix up the side kick. If it looks humanoid in silhouette in any way my suggestion would be to scrap it and do something completely wierd. Even if it has the features of a booger or spit!!!

Time to add some comments for you all.

kiwigarbage: I really like the funky clothing design you've got going on, your colors are great too.
Carnifex: nice work on the co-pilot concept! On the girl, the boot on her back leg kinda looks like it's more loose on the leg, like maybe it's unlaced or untied. I don't know if it's intentional or not, just saying.
jeremy hoffman: wow, interesting figure work! I like the facepaint idea.
Hideyoshi: I really like the alien, and your compostion is great! I wish I had time to work out a whole scene before deadline :(
DIMAGYAN: nice concept, I like the viewpoint, and the costume design is interesting.
MJ_Alcazar: It seems like there are some anatomy issues with this, proportionally and in the perspective as well. Do you have reference?
REKLAS: I think your color scheme is good, and perspective as well. As far as her looking "Japanese" enough, maybe some tweaking of the features to kind of bring that out a bit more, otherwise, great work!
Marioucci: Gotta love the 'fro! I like the viewpoint you're working from, it adds to the overall feeling of the "badass smuggler bitch" theme you have going on.
VampireHungerStrike: Those are some awesome skintones, nice work! Nice touch with the Mickey D's there too.
That's all for now, good work everyone!

a few hrs rushing to get it do.... grr work was nuts...

OK black and white version as it is and a colour test

the colours are meant to be strong acid colours not sure if they were too OTT.

I thought of MIA in terms of clothes design.. day glo neon 80's, trashy leather jacket and gold belly top.

the brief was for colourful, I figure its probably a post apocalyptic world so her clothes will be miss matched a belly top with leather combats, also wanted vintage style clothes mixed with technology - the booster boots etc.

Hi every body,

I just reached the point that i'm bringing in more details in my character. Starting with the head, working my way down to the legs. Concentrating on tightening things up and adding extra things. I'm thinking about extra patterns on the clothes and stuff (gadgets) like that. I still have to look to the small cape on the back, this isn't hanging correct yet... and maybe change the boots a little bit. I hope that i can create a bit of time this weekend to finish this character, otherwise i'll go for the next challenge!! It's a lot of fun and great to see so many artist working on the same assignment. Everybody with his own vision and style!!!!

Define 'goon' suit. I mean can my alien look like a mass of muscle but with an obviously non human head etc? Upper body of a human ok? Cheers.

(Oh and yes, work has been kicking my ass, big time. Gonna try and go for it tonight and tomorrow, should get something semi cool out by then. I hope!)

Some bloody awesome concepts this round, a lot of you have stepped up. Nice!

Thank for your reactions KIWIGARBAGE & DAWNUSLLAW.

You both made cool works. If got a litlle tip for both of you, if you like.
KIWIGARBAGE: Great collorful work and i like the eyepath, but i think that maybe the face needs more contrast with the rest. Because every thing is so colorful, that you first see the colored clothes and then the dark face and this face also gets lost in the big dark afro.
DAWNNUSLLAW: I like the pose, cool chick. Try to create that coolnes in her face. Most important in here eyes. At this moment both her eyes have a different direction. Try to point them toowards the viewer in the same direction (i think that the right eye can be put a litlle bit to the left, so that you look here straight into here eyes).

Maybe it's worth a try!?

Good luck.

DAWNUSSLLAW - hey, thanks. Yeah, I did use a reference for this. I had someone take some pictures of me, and I used the same pose I found on the internet. I also used a reference on the face. But, obviously, I still need a lot of work in that area. :)

What if you tried keeping all the muscle definition but fusing his arms to his sides so it's just one big torso thing with all these muscles across it. I guess to walk he'd have like, leg things coming out the bottom. Dunno. I like how the muscles look.

feifeicreate - the expression is hilarious .. is she smoking dope? :)

trevor - i love the lighting and the atmosphere of your picture ... but dont u think her co-pilot looks a bit too humanoid? similar to saturns gate's a few posts above

i think i went a bit overboard with the bright colours :\ im definetly goin to change the blue parts of the suit, and maybe the red parts too ...
i dunno know if im happy with the design at all ... reminds me too much of megaman ... so what do you think? does it look like a jamanese smuggler? :D

marioucci : I think your concept and pose are very original. I very much liked when you had a dual pose going on whith her copilot under her. The pink doesn't fly as well with me as some of your earlier colourschemes. Also - I dig the bright lights - but not so much the one on her crotch. Its a high contrast area, so instead of moving around in your picture my eyes kind of just ends there. Which is a bit too much "in your face" for me.

D@niel: Awesome rendering and volume in your characters. they feel real to me. Maybe up the contrast between human and alien by making her skintones more saturated pinks and oranges and by making the aliens more green/blue? (Not in a cartoony way of course) Bumping up the saturation on her face especially would make it more noticeable in the composition.

crimson_shape: very nice design and decidedly "futuristic" approach. Maybe play around with the colour in the background - I think a different colour there would complement the colours in her suit better. (it's a bit too red in my opinion.)

mr. m: I quite like it so far. Great character. I think the saturated yellow box competes too much with her face for attention and doesn't really do much for the composition. either tone it down or pick another colour that suits the colours of her face better?

feifeicreate : I like your character so far. Have you thought about adding other colours to the skintone? I think some low-opacity oranges would make it pop. In any case, it's a good idea to decide the colour of your background at the same time that you do the skintones - that way you don't have to correct a lot later.

trevor: This is coming alon wonderfully! Composition, characters.. great! Perhaps experiment with adding some blues to compliment the orangy-hues?

tsujni: looking interesting. watch her balance - try flipping the image and maybe you can see it more clearly. She doesn't look properly grounded to me.

Jeremy Hoffman: I like it, cute style. Maybe add a little of one colour (blue?) to all their shadows to unite the colours a bit?

septomin : I like it a lot. tighten up the rendering on a few spots (hands are always important) and you have a good one. Her left foot seems to be floating a bit. mirror the picture and perhaps you can see it. She doesn't seem grounded to me.

Saleem: nice sketch. Work on her proportions a bit - generally women's hips are at least as broad as their shoulders.

Adam Schumpert: Love her face! The position of her back leg seems a bit off to me - reference? AWESOME alien co-pilot.

ikuru: I like your character. skin tones seem a bit "dead" to me - perhaps add some more saturation (yellow/orange) to the lighter parts of her skin.

DrWorkday: EEk I remember working with a mouse - Good job. Her breasts look like they're placed a bit too low, especially her right one where she's lifting the shoulder. her hair looks too dark in the shadow - using pure black kills a picture. The burn tool is not your friend.

DecayingLolita: I'm liking it so far - even though there might be too much going on right now. use the lighting to bring out the parts you want us to notice - And don't highlight too many places that just makes the eye dart around like a confused bee. The hologram in the foreground isn't really working as it is - perhaps lighten it a bit?

Quinn Simoes : Good and interesting work, very futuristic. It's all a bit blurry - add details and sharpness to the important parts and you've got a good one.

tomwaits4noman: Like it so far. Watch the anatomy of her waist, the curve of it looks unnatural.

Shotgun Baby: I like your line art so far. Watch the anatomy of her feet - they seem much too long for a human especially her left foot that is sticking out. I'm not quite sure what she's standing on?

mimer: I like it - keep working on the anatomy of her arms - the angle seems off and I think her butt is a bit too high right now.

meeatu : Interesting design: i think the anatomy of her arms is a bit off - they look more like tubes.

Nadiamoon: Cool! - perhaps a bigger version is easier to critique?

dawnusllaw: like your character. watch out for anatomy - she seems to be getting smalller from her waist down - she looks a bit unbalanced.

Xaya : I really like your work - your rendering, details and colour is just wonderful.
When you finish the hands - be sure to think elegance - they look too big and almost male-like. watch her grounding! the perspective of her front boot seems off

GodOfWar : I hope you'll make it too. I like your suit design. Make sure you make the back of her head a bit bugger - it looks too small to me.

WTFsteph: I like your style - she's cute. It's usually easier to make the whole picture come together if you fill in the background colour first - the colours of her skin will look different against the background you pick than against the white.

kiwigarbage: I like your work! Nice costume. I'm not really liking the purple background - i don't think it suits the colours. perhaps pick something less saturated to show off the colours in her costume? (they're kind of drowned out) Her ancles look a bit too thin. Flip her - i think she's slightly off balance. cool work so far.

Carnifex : if you want it to look light a flash-light scene - try adding very bright-blue highlights to her skin.

Sorry, this is as much time i had today :) I hope I'll be able to post something myself tomorrow.

jefita - on some parts where the light hits her body it doesnt make much sense. watch her neck, the highlight left of the shadow shouldnt be there, because the neck is rounded and not a flat plane. and the left armrest looks a little bit strange.
beside some other minor issues it looks good to me ... you could try to add another lightsource, to make things more interesting.

marioucci - very interesting posture ... but ive been wondering what that white line between her leg is supposed to be. looks like some sort of unique censorship ^^ so ... what is it? im really curious.

here are my thoughts on the alien guy - don't worry about him too much at this point as it is far too late in the game to consider doing any major revisions.

However, I had hoped to avoid common pitfalls of alien design this round.

"Goon Suit" Aliens
In short, what I was hoping to avoid was a humanoid character - essentially an alien suit - something some actor could fit into. These are the days of computers and cgi - we have so many more options than just some guy in a suit. But it requires us to think it out and to plan. Your imagination is your only limit. And how some of you have limited yourselves.

"Generic" Aliens
Here what I was seeing is essentially a "place holder" or "cardboard cut out" alien - meaning not as much thought was put into the alien as there was the main character. True, this particular challenge isn't about the co-pilot, as that character is essentially window dressing. However, if the main character looks really cool, and your alien is slap-dash, it affects the whole piece.

The Pet:
I'm not sure why this happened this round, but many of you ended up with a pet instead of a co-pilot. Making the character diminutively cute, either emotionally, or physically, doesn't make it an effective character for this round. As the co-pilot, by default, the character is going to be able to handle everything the main character does, and compliment her and make up for her weaknesses, as much as she compliments and makes up for it's weaknesses. So, following this logic, you take her description, and you mirror it. She's funky and wild already, so the co-pilot would be the straight guy - the serious one, probably drab and unassuming, but deadly deadly dangerous. Anything but cute and cuddly.

On Designing Aliens
When designing aliens, concept artists too often fall into the trap of sticking a cool head structure on essentially a person - it's easy, quick, and still more or less fits the bill for an 'alien' character. The trouble is, it's been done. And done. And done. And done. No matter how unique your head design is, it's still a guy in a suit. (Trevor, I'm looking at you :P ).

The whole point of an "Alien" character is to show us something truly unique - something Alien - not of this world, and still make it work on a recognizable level - that's the character design. You need to show intelligence, emotion, and identifiability. Think that is impossible? Watch some Disney cartoons - something like Beauty and Beast. There you have all sorts of furniture and household items walking and talking and just generally being identifiably expressive.

All that it takes is a trip to the zoo, or renting a few nature videos, or stepping outside to see that there are far more physical possibilities than just a humanoid shape.

Now, giving it character is the real challenge :medusachow:

All the best,
~Oreg.

crimson_shape, thanks, I think those are some good ideas. I'll see if I can find some good references.

And finally, I'll join the party and do some commenting!

sozo - Fun design and co-pilot. I think the girl needs a couple of minor tweaks. Her boobs are a little unevenly sized and the right hand seems a little too big.

Decepticon217 - Nice improvement, but I think this suffers from the same thing your last ChoW piece did. You should try using more hard edged brushes. Too much detail gets lost in all the soft-fuzzies.

Jeremy Hoffman - I wasn't sure quite what was going on with yours at first, but it's really come together as you've refined it. Very fun.

dollfaced_joker - The pose is nice, but I think you would do good to find a reference for her. The arms/hands are a little short.

Erick Willand - Figures look pretty sound, but all the detail makes it very busy looking. Perhaps that will improve after inking, etc.

Carnifex - I like the idea on this one. Good job on the co-pilot too. Perhaps you should have the arm that is behind her folded forward. It seems a little weird to run with both arms thrown back at the same time.

kiwigarbage - Looking good. I like the colors, and I also really like the credit card idea. The skin seems a little rough, perhaps smooth it out a bit. And perhaps move the left boot to the right a bit. It doesn't seem to line up quite right with the leg.

WTFsteph - I liked the style, but it felt like you didn't quite finish rendering before you submitted your final.

GodOfWar - A good start. The arm/hand in the background seem a little small and the top of her head seems skewed to the right a little. I'm interested to see where you take the colors.

Xaya - Your piece has been progressing very nicely. I really like the colors, and you did a great job on the co-pilot rework.

dawnusllaw - Rendering is looking good. Perhaps a bit more contrast on the face. I wish the legs were a bit bigger in proportion to the rest of her.

Nadiamoon - Cool looking, but doesn't seem to tune in enough to the brief for me.

meeatu - There are some good elements in this, but I find it somewhat confusing. Not in terms of definition, but more in a lack of information. The figure is in motion, but I can't quite make sense of her setting besides the control she's grasping.

mimer - I like the rework. I think that was a good choice.

Shotgun Baby - Great sketch. Seems more space adventurer than space smuggler though.

marioucci - Great work, lots of character. I'm kind of sad you had to take the co-pilot out.

tomwaits4noman - I like the pose and colors. I think her features need a bit more ethnicity.

Quinn Simoes - Nice take on this. I like the color and texture of it.

DecayingLolita - I feel your frustrations on this one, but you've progressed nicely with this. It's still a bit busy looking because everything is too sharp. Perhaps push some of the background into the shadows more.

DrWorkday - working with a mouse is definitely a challenge, but you've got a good start. You might adjust the proportion of the legs to the torso and head. They look a bit small.

ikuru - I like the expression and pose, but there's not much to suggest that she's a pilot or in the future. Her right leg needs more of a knee too. It seems like her leg just curves instead of bending.

Adam Schumpert - Looks pretty good. Can't wait to see the rendering.

Saleem - Overall design seems fine, if a bit weapon heavy. She is lacking in appropriate feminine curves. She has no hips to speak of, and her torso is too long. It might help to look up a reference image.

septomin - I love the design and colors. Roller blades would have been cool.

tsujni - I am interested to see where this goes.

trevor - Pretty awesome. Is she supposed to look like she's about to clobber her sidekick?

feifeicreate - I'm sad to hear you won't be finishing. You had a really great start.

mr. m - Rendering is coming along nicely. The skintones don't seem to quite match up between her face and hands. Perhaps a bit more asian to her features too?

crimson_shape - It does have a bit of a megaman flair. I'm holding out to see where you go with it.

D@niel - Another really nice piece. I wish the girl had a bit more ethnicity.

Ok, I'm lazy and only went back a couple of pages. I'm not quite as intuitive some others.

okay, here's what I've got after a couple of hours and a trip to the store - I think total working time is about 2.5 hours, if that. And it looks like it. I did this after my post on Aliens above.

450995

I included some of my thought process on the alien's limbs and how that would work, because getting that down initially was a little challenging, but fun :geekg: One note, because I know Trevor will kick my ass on it, I haven't done the feet because I drew them too low in my sketchbook, and was too lazy to finish them off in painter - so there! :P

At this point, I may not finish - probably not, at least not this week, as I've got to start working on some commission work.

All the best,

Hey dudes, so f'in awesome entries. Also very inspiring topic.

So here goes my Bahati, she likes films about cowboys and pirates, so she wears this kind of uniforms and old colts. Her dude, co-pilot is the fan of 'The Police' and his name is Gundral. He is from Kynthia.

Full story I am going to add when I post final entry. BTW I think this is my final image, maybe I will change something, but my compute not allowed me to do anything more, and it's crashing... No good...

BTW Crits and comments welcome. :)

PatricaS: Great starting gesture and animated style, I like the articulation of the aliens' back hand. Nice use of triagle composition and overlapping the bodies to imply depth.

CarrolineBradley: I like the pose leaning against the boxes, I can see you brainstorming the descriptive elements, I'd say even when sketching try to evision the boxes in the background as 3d elements- figureing out a horizon and a point of perspective even this early will give you the much more confidence later. Keep going with the garffitti. Good effort in the faces and getting the 3/4 view perspective staight.

septomin: Nice use of the contropasto, the layered textures and variety of the custume really give that tank girl sense while the jacket and ribbed collar focus toward that Deckard trench coat from blade runner. I would say get away from the Skier look and do some hand studies - the hands are Doc Sues like, unless it's a style thing.

MJ Alcazar: Great effort and ambition shooting for a pretty diffult perspective and pose. I can see you trying to get a Natural look to the arm resting on the ground, Tough angle to navigate but it's a perspective problem that will huant your finish concept if not kept in check early. Nice clean up on the face, I like the alien choice much better in your latter version. I can't imagine how difficult it was to use the laptop touch pad to color, funny :). Goes to show you just can't underestimate an artists determination to use whatever's there to get the vision out. :)

Kreegz85: That alien was a really cool point in you sketch, got ideas flowing for me. I'd say get rid of the gun pose based on the concept description- but the only reason I think you played it off is becuase her attitude seems unerved and confidence is shaken, she's just straining too damn hard to aim to be anykind of marksman. I fact if she misses it looks as though her side kick may be able to shoot something. Tough perspective on the arm- but it seem to play well with the style, nice tats too I just wish there was some ,ore details, for instance on the hilt.

JakkaS: Oh man killer start, you know the value of light and grayscale. I love the alien and how natural the pose is so far, it exudes that curious sci-fi atitude - like a young Luke Sky-walker.

The Whistler: I can tell she's confident and hitting that contropasto, her custume shows some nice texture with heavy Horizontals and verticals, you beefed them up with some framing lines, I would say add some Personalizing punk elements and leer away from the guns and Umpire feel.

DecayingLolita: I think it's a great start and you know what you want as far as her mood and gesture, Looking at the sketch I'd like to see more of a realized sketch in the begining, Project those broad strokes onto the canvass and refine. I really like the pose and the way this turned out in the end.

DECYPL: I think the issue you faced during this thread is a tough debate and being in the middle of the old who copied who is crappy to be the focus of. WHATEVER, looks like you mixed it up pretty well in the later sketch! :) My only thought was *RUN*! But you hung in there and you're developing some killer skills- I'd just mix up the ref alittle- google image search topical words- you'd be surprised what kind of ideas they bring! Force youself to sketch quick gestures of people at malls or coffee shops- Coffeeshops looking into malls where people walk is good. Everyone gets inspiration from peers and predecesors - If not then I've never met them.

Poshice: that third sketch really came out nice, looks like rattleing through the first 2 really paid off, great personality as she look right at us. I like how you took the advice to swtich up the footware, In the end you completely throw out the boots and throw some slip Vans on her. I like the little details like the shirt falling down to reveal the bra, really brings home that feeling of sneaking a peak into the "Girl next store's" room...AND SHE KNOWS!!!!!!lol. Thanks for getting away from the Kawalla bear.:) Too warm and fuzzy. Love the memorabilia, Got great Love and Rockets vibe - my kinda punk.

Dollfaced Joker: Figure work without some ref is tuff to do, getting a snapshot picture of someone in that same pose may give you a better idea of form -the basics-Cylcinders, spheres and rectangles- in space, It won't fix the oddness right away but will plant the seeds to a better drawing the next time around- based on awareness. Designwise, I think you got the eyes going for the Japanese, I'd like to see some Jucier lips. The dreads and buckle straps really add alot, be cool to see some patches on her skirt or maybe a plaid pattern for texture to gradient the texture of the fishnets and bring home the punk. Maybe some black leath wristbands too.

Noah Bradley: I like her thickness and the colors fit the occassion, Looks like the composition it good, I move he figure silohette more into the heavy frame element you've construst in the backgroung if only to get her away from that Tangent line comeing down along her side- that might also put her leg behind that forground element to bring home some overlaping depth. Again I dig that Hip Hop girl booty.

Hideyoshi: Thanks for the advice, I tried to add more lighting, color science is a pretty new experience, I like your site, Your entry is quick an to the point, probably done as fast as they expect it at a game company- I've heard stories and I can't wait to be a part of them if things go the way I hope! I'd like to see a more natural relaxed aesthetic to the figure, I like the angle and composition- lightsource, I like her costume and the Rasta feel to the patterns around her head, I see more implication of design than anything. I have a feeling if you decided to render the crap outa this it would be great. I could see some of the halogram like HUDs and more like ones around the arms of the chair- which could spur on some nice reflective highlights on her face.

Varace: That's just cool- where's the kitchen sink? :) Reminds me of one of those satire depictions of a battle worn soldier with every ridiculous accouterment the artist could think to put in. great design, posture with tude to spare. The colored version and style delivers the package home.

THat's it for now- got to run. I can't wait to see the rest of the finals

kinda frustrating that there's a final entry that looks exactly like my original sketch in a different style by another guy, Eduiante... I mean, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery but it just adds a huge frustration to me, if you look at the finished thread you will see.... *stress* Is this allowed?

However I finished mine up and posted it before looking at comments... Yes it is too sharp and I am obsessed with sharpness and detail and I realised I totally stuffed her face up, but it's all practise especially with coming up with ideas, next time I'll try and force myself to do some sketches before rather than trying to make a half-failure look good :p

thats mega coldrum!

Im gonna throw in the towel on this round, I just couldnt keep up the the changes I wanted to make and my effort ended up being too far from original design. I dont think I learnt much other from course management, my methodology was too over ambitious/reactive not proactive.

Plus I had a BBQ last night and left my ground floor window open so now everything smells of burnt dead animal, I dont have time to battle with bad bones, I have to get room sorted and smelling nice. Cant go work tomorrow smelling of tramp.

I did notice the similarity, but I don't think it was intentional. A cockpit fits exactly into the brief, and there are only so many angles you can take it at, right?

There are plenty of times where pieces subconsciously inspire other pieces, and of course we take the wip thread into account when this happens, but I think they are different enough to really take the matter further - it's obvious that it's not a paint-over, and it *isn't* obvious enough to me that it was intentional to ban the image from the finals thread.

I am sorry that you feel frustrated, and hope you understand.

Oh well it's not like mine is good, especially compared with that sketch coldrum just stuck there and made me cry about... but it is just too similar with the pose and the alien and the shape of the cockpit exactly how mine was before I removed the vertical beam. I'm afraid I have to agree here.

451492451496

I'm not going to ban this from the poll. But I do want to point out that it is important to make sure that as artists, we aren't influenced too much by each other - especially in setting/character design, and especially in challenges like this. Stylistically, the pieces are different enough to work, however as has been pointed out, the pose, angle and alien are far, far too close for comfort.

Please be careful people. This isn't a new story with CHOW - it's happened many times before, but usually behind the scenes. Let's develop our own ideas - yes, a certain amount of influence and inspiration is going to happen, and that's a good thing. But when you can look at two pieces in the finals thread and say "hey ...." it's bit too much of a good thing.

Just be aware of where your influences are coming from, and try not to steal anyone's thunder.

All the best,
~Oreg.

I want to put a finished piece into the thread, especially this being my final week for awhile. Unfortunately, or perhaps fortunately, I'm starting to see the anatomy problems and perspective problems people have pointed out. I knew they were there, but it just took awhile for me to be able to see them. And now I can, and it's soooo frustrating, because I can't seem to FIX them!!!! lol, oh well, I still have the rest of today.

Saleem: Copy the image, put it on a new layer and set that layer's blending mode on 'multiply' (the scroll downmenu upper left of the layer window, usually it's on 'normal'). Make new layer under it and apply color on that layer. Basically, play around with the blending modes until you find something you're comfortable with. You might need some more white in your image to make it work though.

ArtFish
August 31st, 2008, 02:54 PM
@ saleem
one way you can do that is to make a layer over what you have now (or layers) and set it (them) to multiply. that way when you color it will show the shading underneath

there might be other ways too, but thats what i can think of at the moment xD

my progress on this one:

i instantly thought about a klutzy character as opposed to a badass one when reading the desc, bcz high tailing out of trouble didnt strike me as very noble ;p so fun character with flirty apparel (you need that charm to get through checkpoints!). as for the copilot, since shes speed and klutz and colorful, hes mostly brains and slow, so he stays hooked to the ship while she retreives goods usually... a kind of amorphous form too...

im not gonna hav time to finish, am i? T_T

Guys, just a friendly reminder that you've got until about 5-8 o'clock my time on monday (GMT -5) to get yours done. So you've got about twenty four hours left.

The new topic will go up before then, but you all have a little extra time if you need it. :)

Doubt I'll make it but redone the whole thing.. I love this topic and could not resist the Jamaican aspect of her heritage.

I do have to say this chow has some of the best entries I have seen in a long time.. props due to all of you!!

Coldrum, that drawing is awesome. pose, character design..beautiful stuff.

i managed to get a bit of the grayscale image done on my laptop during the train trip home.
i don't think i will manage to finish it, but i thought i post it here anyway, since i hope to get this one done at some point and maybe come away with a good illustration. so, comments, suggestions and crits welcome :)
gotta work on the values a little more i guess(facial planes, and values on figues), and her dreads i still need to paint, push detail level a bit in general i guess....anyways here's the wip:

Let me add information about the Edujante issue.
Just take a look at his web (www.edujante.com) to see if this he needs to take ideas from other person, I think the coincidence hasn't been for watching a picture, maybe it's been for not having seen it... Personally I have coincided many times in ideas inside of chow and viceversa, and just for experience it never bothers me because I know usally there are many coincidences. It just seems funny to me that the problem came out wih an artist with such a big world inside his mind.

I think this one might actually be worse than last week's. But, it was fun to do. And I learned that I need a Tablet :) Some really great stuff in the final's thread.

Fixed for you.

My first attempt at a chow in a very long time. I don't think I have a prayer of winning but I really liked the topic so I couldn't help but give it a try. I only began last night so It's a bit rough. Hopefully I'll at least get it finished up in grayscale before the deadline.

I'm working on embellishing the design of her clothing and accessories right now, and figuring out what kind of junk I want to crowd the environment with.

Here goes my first CHOW entry...

Didn't have the time to take it into photoshop to color it, so hopefully my B&W version does allright with the horrible quality scan

And a quick disclaimer since there was some confusion:

The "Gun" isn't a big nasty gun. The little barrel on top is infact a gun, for defense, but the big rocket launcher looking thing is actually a device that helps her with smuggling larger cargo. The bottom part of the gun shoots the projectile, when then opens into 3 claws. The claws wrap, which are attached to another unit, latch onto the cargo. Once it is lached on, the device turns on and starts manipulating all the particles and actually sucks the cargo into the device, down the tubes and into those power cells attached to the gun. This allows her to contain more goods and store them in those small cells. This helps her smuggle thing with more ease through her gun, or on her backpack.

There is a limit to the size of cargo that can be shrunk down...you wont see her shrinking a big gun ship or anything like that. The cells can be used for both storage, and for energy output. For instance, a cell can provide ammo...or energy, such as for her boots. Her boots, powered by the cells, gives off an energy field. These fields work as a gravitational, or anti-gravitional field. This either secures her (such as when using her storage gun, which gives off a lot of kick & resistance)...or it propels her to run faster, or even jump higher.

Hope you like her!

Heres mine.
Its weird, i really like it until the last few minutes of doing it...

Her co-pilot is a symbiotic being that lives on her left hand. It feeds off her sweat and in return he does all of her sharp-shooting (which isnt her speciality).
She calls him "Mr.Socky". People tell her she's crazy to form an attatchment to it, but she knows not to listen to them. Mr Socky tells her so, and he's always right.

I don't think i will make it. Here is what I have so far. But if there is an extension, I may make it. Mines is weak sauce compared to some of the other entries. That's what I get for not planning.

DecayingLolita : Sorry about the coincidences in our pics.I didnt even see yours. As alwaysI read the thread and i post the final result in the final burning.
a friend of mine noticed me this morning and now i write to try to solve the conflict
I admit a lot of coincidence, but i think is just that a coincidence. In fact in this pic i decided to draw the caracther sit in a chair. Why?Cause i was trying to create triangular compositions in many levels (line composite and colour composite).
No problem, if you want that i removed my pic, really no problem, moderators have the last word.

Sorry again.

No need to worry I am just pretty surprised we got the same idea :) I'm sorry for really mentioning it because it was just something I noticed and I was more worried that mine was rubbish and unoriginal than anything else really, hence my frustration. I'm such a worrier :(

I think its fine, if anything it could use a little clean up. (looks like u used a little Lisa Lefteye there :P)

Id recommend anyone to study Proms tutorials (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=109491). They are simply treasures for learning.

In the spirit of the new rule, here's a series of some of my WIPs for this one. Don't get me wrong, I don't even like my final, and to be honest I got quite sick of it quite soon, but hopefully this might be useful to someone (most of all me if you choose to comment on it).

Bad pencil sketch:
http://www.agnostes.myzen.co.uk/CHOW124_WIP_1.png

Some underpaintingness:
http://www.agnostes.myzen.co.uk/CHOW124_WIP_2.png

Trying to work it up a bit...I toned the hair down and added some combat trousers:
http://www.agnostes.myzen.co.uk/CHOW124_WIP_3.png

Realised the arms and torso were just plain wrong, got some ref and repainted the torso...arms were a nicer idea than before and anatomically 'better':
http://www.agnostes.myzen.co.uk/CHOW124_WIP_5.png

Final...needed more time on the lower half, and there's no fixing a bad drawing :P:

daestwen, So I already have 2 WIP pics in this thread, but are we suppose to post WIP shots somewhere different when we post the finals? (Trying to understand the new rule)

When you submit your final in the finals thread, you must EITHER submit 2-3 wips as well, OR link us to your Wips in this thread. Thank you!!
Where do we submit the WIPs, or are we good as long as we've been posting our WIPs in here leading up to the Final thread?

That doesn't apply for this round, only for the aztec round, so don't worry. (Unless you meant to post this in the aztec thread!)

As for the new rule, it's totally fine if you've been submitting wips the whole time. Just link to them when you submit your final, and you're all good. :)
