Another sketchbook, another journey. Lets see where this one takes me. Feel free to critique, there most welcomed.
here Ill post works from still life's. I'm Going to start simple, then slowly work my way to complex still life's. Hopefully learning about Lighting, composition, value, form, perspective etc along the way.
Each day I will pick an Object to Sketch. I will use pencil first, then off to digital. I may do some traditional Acrylic study's as well. I will try to do more pencil then digital work, I feel my pencil and observation skills there are lacking compared to my digital. I will try to tighten up my lines/rendering in the pencil as best as I can.
Thanks for taking the time to drop by and read.
Seth

Hey this looks like its going to be a very cool sketchbook. So far with what you have it appears you have a exceptional amount of skill. You have done a really great job in showing the materials through the highlights and texture. I will definatley come back here later and check out what you have done! The only gripe I have is with the digital paint of the boot the red cloth seems to draw attention away from the focus.

jimboslutstien• Thanks for dropping by and taking a look. I agree with you there about the cloth taking away from from the main Vocal. I was going to change up the cloth today but I wanted to paint a bit more with it. I might change it tomorrow to a dark blue.
Arghh, I had so much trouble with this boot. I must have re painted it at least 5 times and I am still way way off. Shows how much I need to learn Good thing I started life drawing.

Texahol• About an Hour and a bit. Once I nail down the Lines, and values on the sketch it does not take me to long to throw colors on top.
Blah, Haha. I need to study perspective, and proportion..

wonderful pencilled apple on the first post!
I noticed that some of your sketched pieces look better than some
of your painted pieces, the painted ones look a bit too dark sometimes..
like the boots.
But still, you have skills!

Aveh• Thanks for drooping by.
the ANGRY filipino• Noted thanks.
I decided to put the life study's aside and whole hearty dedicate my time to the Human figure, and perspective. I want to be able to draw every muscle every angle, from memory with out reference. I am working through Bridgman Constructive anatomy right now. Let's see what I can learn from him.

I have a soft spot for abandoned buildings- so nice photography. I like the idea of posting an observation sketch in your book quite frequently. I also like to see that your mixing this book up with other pieces of artwork. Nicely done.

Peetaer: Woot, awesome get going on those Bridgman he is great. Thanks for drooping by.
A bunch of sketches and older work. The Oc work is all under 15 minutes most of it is brain less farts.

Fireflights, Thanks for dropping by mate. I have to agree with you a bit and disagree with you a little to, because she did have a small frame. I should of paid more attention to my rendering, I think I flattened the form in places. I will watch my proportions more.
kidult, Phhft, You are looking fine and dandy your self. Thanks mate.

you've got some great rendering in those portraits and fruit. id love to see you develop a better flow in your people. they seem really stiff, if you can get by that you'll be progressing in no time. your photos are really interesting, an abandoned place i assume? they got some cool lighting.

jdeegz, Thanks again for the crits man. I 100% agree on my faces, people looking stiff. It's some thing I am really working hard to smooth out. I think Once I start figure drawing it will smooth out its self.. Gestures, gestures and more gestures.
Some photos from the storm today.

September 9th, 2008, 02:41 AM
a la bapsi, I am glad you like those photos they where defiantly fun to take. I took 100 pictures that day but that is pretty easy to do when your snapping away happily. Thanks for dropping by.
Well I totally messed up the Initial sketch. Not so much proportion wise but angles. I started playing around with rendering in different areas. Playing with different hatching methods, building up values. In other parts I would try to nail the value in the first go, but it gave me a very inconsistent grain and value. I may work on it for a bit longer, having to much fun with the rendering.
Edit: A couple Gestures.

The OC session earlier today was great! Those gestures are looking good man. One thing you could work on is your faces, they're often quite a bit out of proportion/or the features look a bit unnatural. Nothing a couple of Loomis head studies won't fix, hehe. I'll upload that OC session we had the other week in my sketchbook later. :D

PieMonster: I agree dude. You fucking riped shit up dude. Lets say it again you have improved like a crazy man on fire. haha.. I always skew my drawing and faces. Vrooom, I have to study Loomis again though it has been far to long and I finally was able to get his books. Thanks for the crits they will be looked after.

and I think you are simplifying the skin too much in your pencil renders, look at some photos or real life examples and skin will seem a lot more complex with subtle value changes every bit
just something to look out for

jordyskateboardy, You are to kind man. I need to get out more often so I can take more photos. Thanks for checking out my book.
lilnebo, Hehe, there is nothing to it really. What ever catches your eye take a few pictures of it from different angles and hope for the best. Lots of experimenting and a strong light source helps. I have a cheap digital camera to Olympus Fe-210. I will defiantly try to draw from life every day. Ill get a little sketchbook from the dollar store for that. Thanks I hope you're doing well.
jedininjaman. I am glad you like them. Thanks for the crits man I will try to pay more attention to the delicate value shifts. Moreeee studyssss wooo...
Michael, How are you doing man? I see every thing is going strong on your end. I heard the dvd is going to be out soon, Ill have to pick up a copy.
I will try to drop by every body sketch book when I have a chance. it's hard to do with Dial up though with every one being so image heavy witch is a good thing.
A fat lady. I have to work on it some more, but I thought I would post. A screen grab from the Oc session I had with Pie the other day. My scanner did not pick up the lightest values
jdeegz
September 13th, 2008, 05:31 PM
i dig it all, again, haha.
i think you could get a better scan of the chubby, or just adjust the levels and crop it abit. i dig your rendering, im going to have to watch you do some of these on OC =D

Not to happy with what I have so far. I am going to have to play around with my scanner because It's not picking up a lot of the values. I think the settings are set to only pick mid tones out. . Haha I croped the legs/feet off one. I will have to fix them and some other problems.
Work in progress.
Edit. I played around with scanning last night. mmm this looks a little better.

Good work! You're definitely on the right track with all these studies, and it fees like you are learning from every piece that you do.
For your figure work, I would try to solidify forms more that concentrated on pretty rendering. It looks nice, but gives no real impression that you understand the structure underneath. Maybe it would help you to find some reference to work off of that has stronger light and shadow patterns, and you cna explore how shadow shapes help explain the figure.
Also keep in mind that checking the relationships/proportions of the figure while you're drawing. I always forget what I'm doing half way through, and before you know it, I have a tiny head on a huge torso.
Keep it up.

PieMonster: Hurry Get on Hamachi. I am on right now :P Thanks man.
realextension: hey man. Thanks for the kind words. I might do a few studies from the photos I took but probably not. The photography is more of a time killer if I am going for hikes or walking around. I try to bring the camera with me where ever I go.
Carbono: Glad you think so mate. Working hard to get my anatomy and hatching up there. Thanks.
thespianmonsalvo: They are far from amazing thanks though. I still have a long ways to go.
QETALIVAN: I wish I was able to take photographs when it was raining but my camera would of been ruined. The storm was pretty cool. Washed away are road and flooded are basement. hah.
jigokuen: Yeah man, defiantly starting to pick up more now that I am drawing every day. Things become clearer, and you end up picking subtle things up well drawing and looking at reference. I think it also has a lot to due with the fact that I am observing way more and trying to make sense of what I am drawing. I agree man, I dunno why I always pick reference with crappy lighting and weak shadows. I could add my own interpretation to the drawing but right now I am trying to keep as close to the reference as possible but soon ill break free of that habit. Ha-ha, proportions are funny, I'm really working hard on them. Thanks for taking the time to crit man.

Man! your photography. Jesus H Christ!
It has such Nostalgic dementia to it. Like Tarkowsky's Work. The power of the light invading the rottening environments. Incredibly powerful.
On your Sketching work, It lacks the light invading it. I can see only the off focus dark areas applied and the Subtly colorful lights missing. It seems to me you stop your sketches before applying the final pass of central focal point and sharp light.
Dont get me wrong, I love what you are saying in these 2 pages, but you are loud and clear with the photos and only whispering in your sketches.
Keep it up man

seth, I have a rule I follow, maybe it will help you too in your difficulties with the proportions: first I paint the silhouette in just one color (could be gray) and usually this part is very important for me and I don't start the color/value process until the silhouette fills natural. if you have this right, the rest is much easier as you only put colors in this area. a secondary step could be to cover only the major values first. leave the blending to the end, or (like in my case :)) don't worry about it too much. the artists I admire the most are those who are using few strokes of value and manage to express in a few strokes what others blend for hours. and I'm sure this will be useful later when we'll stop using refs :)

seth1
September 24th, 2008, 08:59 PM
Joce: It really depends on the subject matter and how I feel. Most time's I start off with the sketch then throw a wash of gray over, Build my values up and pick out my highlights. Other times, I will start with a huge brush and just throw things down real quick, with a light color then define it from there. Lots of experimenting going on. I am still at that stage where I am trying to find what works best for me. Thanks for dropping by.

Really good studies and pencilwork, no clear critique here expect some colour would be nice too. Your digital seems to be bit messy sometimes, maybe because then it was quick?

Wajooow. So much dedication in those awesome studies. Thumbs up.
seth1
October 11th, 2008, 04:53 AM
Nettle_Mountain, Hey dude,. Yeah usually if they are messy they are done really quick. Between 20 minutes and down, just quick doodles. Nothing worth taking to the next step. I saved it on my hard drive it was a wounder full critique.
I tryed to paint the noises as fast as I could. Picking each value out per brush stroke and placing it down where it should go. It took me about 15 minutes.
Playing around with color in sketcher and a quick doodle. Torso studies soon just going to get some more done.

I'm gunna have to agree with realextension. I think your compartmentalizing your studies too much without applying them to the big picture. I think its beneficial to always try to apply what you're studying to at least a full figure if not a full image to really see what you've retained.
Keep pushing man.

Aveh, Hey man. Good to see you still kicking. I hope every thing is going well with you. I actually went for a complete loop, and landed my self in the French foreign legion. I was discharged for 2 years due to my ears. I have Chronic otitis media witch requires surgery. The healing time will take two years to completely able to handle firing a weapon and being around loud noises with out my eardrums exploding. It will be an exciting two years I have planed out. Now every thing has to fall into place. When I was in the army I also took an art test to work for the army's magazine witch went really well. After two years in combat regiment I will be working in the magazine department if I want or it might be some thing I do later in my career we see how I age.
Shadow Stalker, thanks man. Hope to see you in sketcher again. :lifedrawing:

Due to the fact a little menace decided it would be interesting to see how hard he could stab it with the tablet pen over, and over. I have come to conclusion to never let a young lad go unsupervised with A tablet again. Been super busy working, working all sorts of crazy jobs. I ended up getting tendonitis in both hands, so I have a week or so of down time.
