Realistic? Dead lich kings aren't real, they don't exist, they are like santa-claus, just fiction... I shouldn't have said that.

scumworks: um....ahehe.....well......

mojo: a lick king is usually related to the arcane arts. elements related to a lich usually revolve around magic, or some sort of powerful artifact. They are more like a skeleton with the mind of some demon/undead mage. A lot more intelligent than a skelo, and usually a lot more evil. Also often related to frost and ice elements as opposed to fire. hope that helps.

I have a killer design going, hope i can get my free hosting to work. Blergh.

Anyway its midnight here now. Catching some z's. The lich king is safely imprisoned in my sketchbook.....for NOW!! BWAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

An other name for a lich king could be undead high wizard......so it is often confused with a necromancer....but they contol death...they aren't always dead...so liches don't have to be a skeleton...it also could have some flesh...and be called zombie....

aw, sweet, another good topic... yay! I'm gonna try to squeeze in a sketch later.

Oh, by the way, I've got a question for fellow DSGers. I'm just curious, who works with the good ol' (real) paper and pencil (or pen) in your finished sketch? I see a lot of digital line work, but just wondering if I'm an old fart 'cause I still stick with p&p. Just curious. :D

I've never heard of a Lich King but thanks to the detailed descriptions I understand what it means.

Harmony Steel and Forkface those are great. Love the postcard idea.

MrKayne I try to bounce around between pencil, pen, photoshop, and painter. It's great practice and I can really say it has helped me get around in painter a little better.

Anyway this one was pen and then I added a touch of red in ps. Kinda goofy but what the hell, it's a great break from real work. Did it at lunch, about 45 min.

fukifino
November 5th, 2003, 03:02 PM
From a Dungeons and Dragons standpoint (uh oh, did I just out myself? ;) ), a lich is a powerful wizard who uses magic to turn himself into an immortal undead creature. They're usually not skeletons so much as emaciated, although they are undead and don't really heal, so over time most usually lose quite a bit of what's left of their mummified flesh. Exposed skulls and other structures are common as they have to deal with people trying to kill them all the time (aka "adventurers").

Most of them continue their magical study (one of the prime factors for entering lichdom in the first place..more time to pursue magical interests) and are quite powerful.

Wow, I'm a nerd.

fukifino: you saved my image!
mrkayne: i occasionally touch p&p. its a bit of both. p&p still feels the best.

this is lichlord bzatch whom researched necromancy and found himself a method of prolouning life. hes is not getting dement but his body still needs attending.

and the 'for real' image:

The first one I did for sh!ts and giggles. The second I kinda like (though it needs a LOT to become a final image). I am consoled a little by the fact that I did them while bouncing around in the work van.

@olsen: Creepy man, and I mean that in a good way.

@danielh68: I like what's going on there but I gotta agree, that green makes me sick too. It's either the green or the blur factor going on, or the combination of both. Cool nonetheless.

@jero: Very Mardi Gras-esque, good stuff.

@Vyle: You make me sick dude, really. Time to check and see if my application to the truck driving school got accepted.

@anjy: I like the creepy expression on it's face, love the lighting.

@patch: I swear dude, I almost did an undead elvis, great minds think alike.

@barcode: I really like the bottom figure on the next to last sketch. Would love to see that one cleaned up and in a color piece.

Ok, now for my humble work:

Also, great dsg today! I'm glad so many peeps made it this time around. My Lich King came out a lil cartoon-ier than I wanted, but not a bad one.

scumworks: doesn't feel too much like a lich to me, but dayam does he embody 'power'

scrubbin bubbles: I like it like it is... may not be a 'full render' - but it has a solid feel to it. Almost like logo work...

clocktowerartworks: nice rendering work dood.

anjy: I wish to hell I had half of your lighting prowess...

vyle: *drool all over myself*

digital fusion: I was amazed that I was the first to do an 'elvis' - more amazed no one else has! Did you color digitaly? nice textures...

Woo, I made it! Durn midterm...wasn't even today...I need sleep... :O Anyway, looking at people's stuff reminded me of some stuff from school...like, making characters...and not overworking the canvas. Man, I miss my oil paints... (wait, what did I just say?! miss OIL PAINTS?! Damn you, ZYGOMATIC ARCH!!)

Cool stuff everyone! I really dig the variety of character that's showing up in these designs. Makes me inspired to try different things :)

edit: pencil vs wacom...for me, the only reason I've been doing all my dsg's on the comp is because I have no scanner here. Wouldn't have fit well in my suitcase. nBT Haha, cute one, and the second is like, punk lich king.
Harmony Steel Nice postcard. I see this was a friendly king...
forkface Nice horns.
Mad Giraffe Nice *magic* feel, but I wish he had legs.
Gouda Boy Nice, and nice crown design.
josephrey Nice sketch, and I like the "addition" of no jaw. I was also planning a now jaw-er, but I added one in the end...
Beatnik Feels almost naked, but he looks like he's about to slash someone, so it's alright. Haha... Second one's like, "Hey!".
renone Atleast it's not a paintover, but maybe you can use reference to help build parts up of an idea you have, instead of using it as pretty much the end idea. Interesting skull design.
barcode Nice n' interesting sketches!
hito Very magical. This would have been great with a slight hint of a background.
Hunger_Artist I like the strokes.
scumworks Very interesting concept fer the lich king. Haha, I like the addition of the smiley on his throne.
lavhoes Nice. Almost sexy, in a way.
Scrubbin Bubbles Haha... Nice, man. I like how he's like, "Look at my pee pee.", or, "Come here!".
OLSEN Thanks! The looseness of it all helps with that "undead" feel. Some of the scribbles on the right are weird, but... The second one's scary, because I know he'd probably claw my face for some reason.
Index This looks like it'd be nice if it were vectorized and cell shaded (with minimal actual shading; more just flat colors).
Patch Thanks, yo. Haha! Elvis, YEAH!
Wraithmaster Nice horns allover, but too bad it's not half-finished.
Clocktower Artworks Ooh, I like the book!
Vyle Nice, man. In a way, though, it reminds me of the Terminator movie series, with the near-metallic nature of the lich, the fire, and the skeletons under feet, but that mood is also what makes it badass.
JerO That's pretty cool, because I imagine magic is holding him together? Nice.
danielh68 Thanks! I like some of the color combinations you used, and the "Aah, I'm powerful! I just killed this man!", is nice, too. Haha, poor guy.
Digital FusioN Thanks, man. Too bad I didn't get to see yours before you apparently violated AngelFire's terms of service. Heh...
MrKayne Some nice lines, there, and I like the legs fading into the shadows. Just a note on your sig, your name is "MrKayne", but the Japanese says "Kayane"; in English like, "kaw-yaw-nay". "Kayne" like "Cane", would be more like, KEIN (KE,I,N) or KE-N (KE,line,N).
Velo Ooh, nice clothing.
Ankh Nice one, man; another that I wished was finished.
DV8 Thanks! And that's nuts. Very rustic, nativish...
Sapphire Haha, cute.
William b. Hand Thank you! And the sewing in there is great. Without it, it'd give a real, "Man, I had a hard day at work." or tired feeling. Great idea, showing the almost human side of the king.
silentbrain Nice color usage. Haha, and the subject is pretty funny, given the topic.
Mr.Marbles Pretty cool. He's like, "Yyyeees?".
ilustre Interesting and also weird, with the human head in here. Clothing's a bit Spawnish, but I like the mask.
paper slayer Haha, nice. It's like, "In the time of Shakespeare, there was a boy..."

MrKayne
November 6th, 2003, 01:24 PM
Yeah, I knew my sig was off, I guess I was figuring since it was a name I was going for more of a phonetical guess. :) But, thanks for the tip, I do really want it to be closer to how it should be read.
