I'm not satified with this piece but I'm quite tired. I'm very curious to your pictures because I really hadn't any good idea to this topic.

Marvin the Magnificent threw everything he had at the looming creature. Unfortunately his grand reputation, based on boastfulness and parlor tricks, wasn't going to get him out of this one.

This was a pain. I got this idea straight away, about the wizard pulling down a wall over himself, but after 3 tries in about 5 hours i gave up on it. I saved one for you to see the other two are deleted and even worse, if you can imagine. Finally I made a sketch I was happy with.

Hmm, seems conjuring toys are a theme already :).

Here's my first attempt *hangs head in shame*:

@ funnyface, cheer up, just cause it didn't turn out the way you wanted doesn't mean you should beat yourself up about it, figure out what's bugging you about the pics and study those areas. just your already halfway there by throwing your hat into the DSG!

Hi all,... hope you don't mind but I added a different monster instead of the one that was originally there.

Kinda short on time but I decided something was better than nothing so I managed to do this:

A polymorph spell is always a double-edged sword, especially when you turn a harmless kobold into an ancient mutli-hued dragon
(Haha anyone here plays Angband or Nethack)

(The coloring isn't finished, but I don't know if I'll have time to finish it. If not, I'll probably conclude the thing later and post it in my sketchbook)

:teeth: At first I had the same idea as you. I wanted to draw a big ping teddybear between two fighters but I didn't know how to joint the just spelled flying teddybear and the surprised expression of the mage. So then I decided to draw something more stable - swimming ring and cap:\

I really like the mysterian's pic(looks like flash-nice design) and the giant spell from 064 (quite original idea):D

Hello again. Here's my sketch. I am not really satisfied how it turned out but I had only about 30 minutes cause I'm going to work. I wish I have added a little more dynamic into it and made a better background, but I can try and work on it tomorrow.

Edit: Thanks Lingmerth! I did just a little touch here and there (it's still a sketch, right?), so I can focus on drawing the Bone Exterior Robot. one question, tho: what are the ranks? Couldn't find a description anywhere around...

Hope this critique will be helpful to some.

Gumish - That edge glow (the mist used to illustrate the magic) isn't really working, I think the the picture would be better off without it, at least around the edges of the objects. Try darkening your shadows a bit more, creating more contrast, I think this will help your picture pop out a bit more. At first i didn't see the arm his about strike with, darkening the silhouette of it will make the pose a bit more clearer and also help create more depth.

Tommoy - The monster looks a bit flat, some more lighting (skylight and reflective light) Could help convey the form better and make it pop out more. and I think tightening up the wizard a bit more will draw a better focal point.

the_Satanic_COokie - You got some exiting lighting possibilities there, too bad you don't capitalize on them. The light from the magic effect should be reflected on the creature (and the wizard) and could illuminate him in an exiting way. And some reflected environmental light should appear on the back of the wizard as well. [See IMG, best one I could find this fast] (http://www.wayuki.nl/images/tuts/light/step07.gif)

OcTyler - Sometimes it can actually be helpful to flatten an image See this link (http://www.itchstudios.com/psg/art_tut.htm#flatten_and_simplify)

FunnyFace - @ Sketch: Only thing I can comment on would be the monster, maybe show a bit more, or a different pose. It sorta looks like the monster's diving in from the upper left. Maybe that is the intention, but then it feel weird that he can so easily stop it with one hand.

064 -@ First pic: Not much to say. Hi's anatomy looks a bit weird though comparing the upper and lower body. I realize the plant is pulling him, but ouch.
@ Second pic: I realize that the fast and simple strokes of the city give the picture a lot of energy and movement. But I think there just a little to simple, cleaning them up only a little would help the overall picture. But make sure too keep the awesome energy that the picture has, and not over work it (Like I always do =/ )

mysterian - Very nice, I got nothing to say.

XXITheWorld - I think your ready to start with shadows and light. This tutorial was really helpful to me (http://www.itchstudios.com/psg/art_tut.htm). Keep challenging yourself it's worth it!

Sudsy - See the above tutorial link, It's really useful. And I think it would really help you to study up on anatomy and foreshortening

benkashmir - I know the lines ad to the expression and power of the painting, but I would clean them up a bit more.

metalpiss - The only thing I can see wrong is that the giant seems to be missing fingers on his right hand.

tuber - Can't say much , only notice the you should be able to see the inside of the snakes lower yaw at that angle (and the tongue doesn't look centered in his mouth)

Deevad - Can't say much about this, Only small nitpicks; You should be able to see the inside of his mouth (However I do realize that your doing a cartoon style, so maybe this doesn't really apply), and the lower part of his stomach seem a bit flat, think there should be a little more rotation on the cake, pattern. I really like your moon. otherwise big fan of your work, (especially like the one with the spider-harp)

arutea - Was it drawn on proper marker paper? the lighter shadow on the monsters back could be a blended a bit more. (but still you probably handle markers better than I do...). I don't know you've already done this, but you can remove the blue-sketch lines in photo shop (that's why they are blue). But the blue nuances that are there now kinda works, almost gives the illusion of a blue light source. (Maybe that's why you've kept them)

Powerhouse - A bit more cleanup would be nice. Maybe also flatten the shadows (see the link I gave to OcTyler) and ease up on the highlights on the monster, Use shadow to describe the object foremost. Thirdly the perspective of the ground plane and the wizard looks a bit off.

Dache - I would darken up the wizard a bit more, and also make it clearer that his head explodes (at first I thought he was wearing some kind of Mayan crown)

goran - Very nice, wouldn't it be cool to see some of that firework light up the characters and environment.

Zaphid - you should also check out the link I gave to XXITheWorld

Now I know that I too have a long way to go and that I should follow some of my own advice. But easier said than done right ;). Anyway I hope that you where helped by this and keep at it!

I spent more time on it than it looks like, I swear... Maybe I'll take time to go back and do proper details tonight. I am pleased with my concept and general composition though.

I think I need to learn a new work flow for these. I either end up with a significantly lower quality than I want, or taking too much time t do it...

I have the same problem, try speed painting exercises to help you work looser, and faster. It's harder then one thinks to become loose.

These aren't the most inspired concepts/designs, but I was focusing on the comic aspect rather than technical skill.

Oh. waw... thanks for the comments, Lingmerth and Mitze.

arutea - Was it drawn on proper marker paper?

It was done in my sketch book so I think it's cartridge paper... I normally draw on a lot of loose paper but I wanted to start keeping my drawings together in one place so I'm trying to use my sketchbooks more often. (Also... I'm not a fan of bleedproof paper. =\ The ink just doesn't sit well...)
You're right though... I should get rid of the blue. (It's just my pure laziness... I have no excuse. >_<) haha thanks! =D

Lingmerth
August 25th, 2008, 04:22 AM
Some ink's work better then others on bleed proof, But I know what you mean. Keep in mind that markers lasts longer if used on bleed proof (doesn't drain them as fast) and when it comes to bleed proof paper, I find that LETRASET is about the only brand that works really well. But you probably already knew this :) Cheers.

Gardener Wizard casts spell against carrot-eating-thief bunny - but the bunnies, clearly of evil decent (the monsters in this tale of death and despair), have planted an evil daemon spell among the gardening spells - and the wizard gets eaten as so many carrots before him by "his" own spell, but esp. by his own actions, though manipulated through pink mastery.
