Lose the mechanical arm and just as a creature it is a great concept.

And I swear the arm stub under the mechanical arm is grabbing it's penis.

Howdy doesn't know what the hell is going on... that arm rocks. I just wonder how it would pivot at the shoulder, cause the top hydrolic... thing can only go up and down. Either way, better mechanics than I could pull off. I also love the choice of colors. Well done! Bravo! Peace

Stunning work:)
The only thing that throws it is the tail.. because it lies on the left and cuts through between the right knee and foot the eye doesn't pick up those three elements easily.
Amazing skills.

Awesome work..

I really enjoy the contrast of the machine on flesh.
This is a real visual feast.. you can scan the entire image and
not get bored at all.. from color to line..

By any chance.. did you teach at Associates ?

I heard that there was a great teacher named Carlos that taught some concept classes there... but had just left..

awesome stuff..

Why did you quit teaching? I would have been very interested in taking a class taught by you. I use to attend the Art Institute of Los Angeles but quit because I didn't like the school. Would have gotten my arse down to Orange County for a class of yours for sure though.

I did in fact teach at associates. BTW thanks for the critiques guys. I stopped teaching to concentrate on making a book on how to do character design. Feng, Kevin and I know each other. In fact I might be guest speaking in kevin's class at gnomon sometime.

Supah-funky! I really appreciate the way the mech grafts into the organic, particularly the obliques and the folds in the shoulder/chest region. The only thing that throws it for me is the darkness of the near leg and foot- some relected light/rim lighting would unify the colors, don't you think? To nitpick the mech arm, I'm not seeing a lot of upward rotation. That upper piston seems too short. I'm just envisioning this as a working cg model, natch!

Thats great.. I wish I were in LA to catch your guest apperance.. Yea I got to catch a class or two from Feng when he had the stint at Associates.

I really dig how you guys all know and hang out with each other.. Feng brought in Hong Ly on the first day.. and we got to meet Brian Hsu from Blizzard a few days later..

You guys are all really inspirational.. I just have to go through a few more months of school so I can get all my stuff together..

carlo

yeah i see the problem with the arm and i will correct it on my next cyborg design. there should be a large rotational axis where the pistons are connected and that should solve the problems.

This is awesome.......How long did it take you to draw that:).....you say you got hired at ILM....did you send a portfolio in print or website?

2hrs to draw 40 min to color. Mechanical stuff always takes a little longer for me, it was done as a class demo. Well, a friend of mine from highschool recommended me and they asked for a portfolio. Website or a portfolio is not important, what is important is work that rocks, reliability, and not being an ass because as a freelancer most of your jobs will come from recommendations from either former bosses or former co workers. Make no mistake, many of the concept artists in hollywood and up at ILM know each other and are friends. If you are a dick everybody will know about it. *Architect from Matrix voice* "Concurrently the inverse is true" if you are cool the guys will pass the name along.

I like the design a lot. A little more volume to the colors would've been nice though. The arm orange is quite flat. Looks like you limited your palette although you didn't have to, especially where the hand overlaps the body.
Some hues on the toes and knees would also be nice. It doesn't have to be much, just a tiny value and hue shift. Perhaps some shadows too. It looks like you skipped them.

Looks very cool anyhow, reminds me to spend a bit more time on making geometrical/boxy/cylindrical robot designs.

November 5th, 2003, 01:59 PM
NICE!!! Yeah, I agree with Prometheus some of the colors in the arm on the beast and vice/versa would make it SING! That area between the Hydraulic arm and his body looks sweet. ALSO- whilst geeking about how cool this creature is I covered up the lower set of eye's and having one pair of smaller close set eye's only makes him look like a lummox who would have no qualms about flossing his beak with your intestines.

*eh*

EITHER way... I dig it.

You WILL post more stuff.... right, right?

Nice concept :)

I'm a concept art student at the art institute of dallas, although I would have killed to have a concept teacher like you, really great stuff.

carlo
November 5th, 2003, 03:59 PM
I'm going to do my best to help, I am working on a concept art book and we can start with some simple principles:

Form follows function-Things generally should look like what they do, a cheetah looks like a fast moving predator.

Have a strong silhouette-An object has to read immediately. It doesn't matter on the amount of rendering you put on an object if the overall shape is poo. There is no point on putting a spoiler on a dodge dart but a ferrari just sitting there, even just in grey primer and no tires looks like a force to be reckoned with.

Ill try to help more later. in the meantime here's an old piece.

you know what really blows? Living in michigan....

you know what else really blows? The fact that michigan is entirely made up of fine art schools.

I wish i could have spent the last few years in cali. :)

im mostly self taught and never went to art center. I learned mostly by working and got quite a bit of polish by taking a couple of classes at Associates in Art. Listen to what Kevin Chen has to say, and try to take his class, cheaper than Art Center. As for line quality, design your lines as well as the actual drawing, look at Leyendecker, Mucha, Ian McCaig and Drew Struzan, all these guys make their brushstrokes and lines a decorative element.

well, most of the work on my wesite has a very scribbled look to it. This, from what i've heard, does not fly well with most professionals. So, in the last thunderdome i tried straight line instead of scribbles.
