Mmmmhhhh good stuff.
If I had to say something it would be that BG and character don't really mix well. I keep seeing 2 pictures...
What makes it work is that the girl and her ride are so right that they can keep the picture interesting.

She's not wearing very much clothes, that beast must be very happy (she seems pretty satisfied too, must have been a great ride :D )

I model quite a bit but I dont animate. Anatomy, rendering and design sense are all tools you have to hone, design sense being the most difficult. It is something you have to continually practice.
People get frustrated when they cant do it at first but one has to recognize that, like basketball, art is a physical activity, it takes hundreds of hours before your hands stop betraying you.
The art of conceptual design revolves around communication, so look at alot of reference, and try to understand how certain visuals affect people. This visual encyclopedia becomes your primary tool for design but all the skills work together to create effective communication.
I often use Darth vader as an example. Visually he is composed of several things that constitute an air of menace and awe. He is symbolic of death with his black robes, death mask and scythe (lightsaber). He is also the black knight, the worthy and noble rival. His helm is the samurai helm to make us think of a warrior of great skill and cunning. He is the machine man controlled by the artificial duties of the state.
sorry for going off on a tangent there.

And there is one problem: she wouldn't sit like this on the creatures' back. She'd fall down.
