I have also been referred from Deviantart to here, because I couldn't find the right artists.

This is a personal project, and I am using my own budget - so as you can imagine its quite a lot for me.

Anyhoo I'm in need of an artist who's art will be semi-real with a manga combination. I.e. blade of the immortal manga.

Approx 100 pages or so, and will be pencilled b&w (not inked) with soft but clean lines. (No payment upfront as I have been scammed by artists, but I will either pay per page done, or per 10 pages/installements etc...)

A user's b&w pencilled work I liked on deviantart -> http://darkfong.deviantart.com/

Blade of the immortal:

http://img232.imageshack.us/img232/8208/94008893ek8.jpg

Oh and because I am self-publishing this, I have to keep all rights (I'm breaking my personal bank to hire you and then self-publish - need all the money I can get :(

Please show me your portfolio's if you think your art matches this, thanks.

Hi, there-

I sent you a message through DeviantArt, I believe. Not sure if you got it, but I haven't received a reply. I wanted to ask if you could provide a page of the script to do the sample of. I think everyone would appreciate it. It's hard telling what you'll actually be drawing. Blade of the Immortal is a lot of nature scenery. It sounds like yours might be a lot of buildings and cars. Plus, the types of characters needed, etc.

I'm still very interested in this position.

Thank you!

Since there is no payment upfront like you said. Then this belongs in the non-payment forum.

Ok now I see. However why not have the artists sign a contact?

Missyl I wish you the best of luck with your project. Can you give your e-mail addy or tell people how you'd like to contacted. Have you considered making out a contact for you and the artists to follow, this keeps the boards from getting to messy. That way you are less likely to be cheated, the supplies for this project along with cost a good amount of money and you might have a hard time finding a good artist if you aren't willing to pay something upfront.

What are you talking about? He/she clearly said that this job could be paid on a per page basis, which is a normal way of doing business for comics. And what kind of supplies are you using that cost so much money? The whole thing could be done digitally and cost nothing.
Don't be too eager to chase away employers, especially when they offer a pretty good deal. You're not a moderator here.

If you took the time to read my post then you would see that I'm not chasing the employer away. They themselves said that there was no upfront pay until each page was done therefore I suugested making out a contact for both the employer and artist to follow so no one could get burned on either end.

Where did you get the idea that working digitally would cost nothing? Last time I checked you weren't a moderator here either.I don't know to many comic book artists pro or amature who do the work first without getting any form of payment.

Missyl I can understand why you are being cautious about this project since you were scammed. However there are alot of artists who were scammed by employers as well who are equally cautious. Missyl you are a employer so you need to think about the business end of this as well.

Not all not a great deal of employers and artists make out contacts that both agree on and follow. Example you could put that you would need to approve of each step of the project before the artists moved on to level of the piece. Like sketches, pencils, inking and then finally coloring this would save you both the artist time and money. Because you are both seeing and agreeing on each piece that is done.

Hi Missy,

Take a look at my work on the following websites.
judgefang.deviantart.com
www.leoillustrator.com

I'm a fantasy illustrator with most of my experience doing interior art for pen and paper rpg books. I've completed 3 comics on tight schedules before.
I work primarily in digital paints, but when I pencil I usually go for a soft rendered look.
I have a bunch of newer stuff that I can't show yet, so if you want more specific samples email me and we can discuss it.

Thanks,

Leo Lingas

Thanks everyone for your responses, I'm going through them all (as well as lots of good pm's :) I'm glad I was referred here from Deviantart.

Anyhoo I've gotten a lot of good submissions, and with some info from people here I'm also setting up a contract for the final artist.

However because of the huge no. of responses I won't be able to reply to everyone, so if you haven't had a response in 1-2 weeks time, please assume you have been unsuccessful on this occassion but I will def keep all your works/contacts on file!!

I'm happy to lower it if it makes you all feel better =P

I've actually started at a muuuch lower budget (about half) but I was never happy with the quality and the entries, and people adviced me that if I wanted something worth it - I would have to up it. (Though this is my personal budget, so hence why I'm being a bit more strict/tight with the exact needs I want with an artist)

Thanks for all your entries btw, such great artists :)

You shouldnt go any lower than $100.00 per page
the average pay rate for a penciler $250

An unknown artist should make $100. A pro can
command $200 to $400 with $250 being middle of the road and $400 being
for the absolute very best artists available. Very few can command
this amount in today's economy so $300 is pretty much the current
maximum.
If you pay any less than that run the risk of getting poor quality art work in return.
If I was shelling out 10,000 out of my own pocket I would not take that chance.
I would want to get my moneys worth.

I had a talk with someone over PM who brought this to my attention. Thank you to that person, to JL and Elwell too, I was ignorant of professional comic wages and my opinion should not be taken into account. I actually forget where I got my idea of comic wages, and since I'm no comic artist please defer to the expertise in this thread :)
