grats on the intuos 4. HEy you cheated some of this is old heheh.

With those greyscale portratis in your latest post, I think it would be benificial to be more careful about where you place your speculars (brightest values). Try starting out with real dark values like 70-80 and work dark to light. then can add in darks where you want more focus, as well as with the brights. If you look at life, things rarely get that bright.

I'm gonna paint some portraits speedys now so I can show you what I mean.

Hai Thanks, man! Yeah, I'll work on it. I think my screen is messed up! Somehow it looks desaturated on the web in comparison to my PS screen haha! I suck! :p
I'm working on my 'Idol' tribute coffee table book, for school. I'll post it up as soon as I get it done sometimes today or tomorrow. I hope...:assspank:

ImaGEEnation

Coffee Table tribute book cover project. Finally done! Damn you back!!! Aaargh!

A tribute I did for one of the most influential person in the art world. This is my homage to the legendary, Katsuhiro Otomo. I tried not to get to much reference for this piece, rather I used my memories as much as I could. Although, i did watched 'Steamboy' and 'Akira' a few days ago hehe! In the picture I tried to incorporate all the major characters in his animations. And that is my take on Otomo himself as a cyborg of some sort haha!

This is only the line art (slow poke). I'll post the finished piece when it's done. Take it easy guys!:oneye:

Cam Sykes
June 8th, 2009, 03:18 AM
the homage piece is looking real nice so far. My only suggestion at this point is to correct the japanese in the background.

If you want to make an authentic tribute it'll help to use the correct japanese because otherwise it just looks arbitrary. Reading it now it doesnt say anything. I don't know alot of japanese but I'm sure that is just jibberish.
I recognise steamboy but you've made him look alot older, I know you didn't use reference but if you want to make it accurate you may as well.
I know reference can slow things up when working ona piece and can make things too contrived, but now that you've worked out the compisition and context, might be worthwhile to touch things up with reference now.

ImaGEEnation
June 8th, 2009, 05:00 AM
Hey Cam, Thanks man!
Yeah, I made Steamboy to be like that, 'cos I liked the Older look, Otomo drew on the Director's Cut edition DvD cover. But, yeah I can understand why you'd think like that otherwise, he is a 'boy' after all haha! Oh the Kanji actually says, 'dreams'. It's not really the fonts I'm gonna use, this was just a mock up to see where things would go composition wise. Yeah, I'll be doing the calligraphy myself once coloring is done. Back to work for me! :lifedrawing:

My entry for this week's CHOW.

Somehow, every time I submit any artwork on the net, they come out to be desaturated grrrr...!!! I need to pay more attention to values and try to be faster. This piece took me like 12-15 hrs! I'll try my best to enter CHOW every week, depending on how busy I get. I learn a lot from it.

Does anyone know or have any link/s to making great lighting? ( like the bow and arrow I did ) C&C are welcome! thanks!

Hey Gee, thanks for stopping by my sketchbook. Check out this link (http://www.dhfa.net/Artiststatement2.html) for some good foundational information. It will give you a good format to ground yourself on. Be sure to focus on value and form first, and worry about color later.

Also, that morph illustration is sweet.

Thanks peeps for the comments. Will work harder.

Alright, I'm doing a 5 days web design workshop at school and decided to do a one a day Character Design during class. I guess it's just an excuse for me to draw, otherwise I'll get a massive headache from doing all those symbols! :steph:

Day 1
This dude's main specialty is that he is part nature, specifically trees. So, he can shift himself into a tree. When you think about it, you can do a lot of damage with a log haha!

Oh, can anyone tell me how to change the sketchbook's title?

Day 2

One a day Character Design

Damn, so much things to learn in this web design stuff! Waaah! But, still I had to squeeze this in! Aargh! Hopefully tomorrow will be a bit easier. :android:

This Chicka is a crazy lil' bitch haaha! She goes around blowing things up! She also like taking a hot bath while eating papayas... mmmhh...papayas...!

Hopefully, I'll be able to upload all of them on a daily basis. If not then, oh well... next time next time! :D

Towwy- Thanks, man! Hope to get a spot up there just like you! haha I got a long way to go though! :D
Karein- Yeah, it's always good to see another Aussie talent, hope to learn from each other.

Day 3

One a day character design

Alright, I don't want to lie but I couldn't do 5 characters during the web design workshop, it was just too full on! But still, I want to finish my plan, so I'll still do the characters. The last day, didn't really go according to plan, the teacher neglected me all day and helped other people! Meh, fuck it I'm gonna try and figure it out myself!

Yeppersz! I love drawing mecha characters, so decided to draw this fella. An ex soldier with a kind heart. Kinda inspired by Appleseed. Didn't do a thumbnail for this one, could've been a bit better, but I still like the result.

I hope to fill up this SB to at least 8 pages before the end of the year. I hope! :D

Thought, I do a monster looking character. So, next would be another totally different character to the other four.

Camske- Thanks, buddy! yeah, was hoping to learn a lot from the web workshop, so I could help a bit with our site, but seriously the teacher didn't help out that much! Keep drawing, dude!

Anyway, not much here, been hanging out with my girl for a whole weekend and didn't draw much except for her portrait while she's watching TV. And my process from a thumbnail to a layout of something I'm working on. Feeling rusty from that web workshop, gotta get back to the drawing book! :harbl:

Still work in progress. Any C & C is appreciated.

Cam Sykes
July 12th, 2009, 06:29 AM
the saturation is colour profile settings. nothing to do with resolution. should be able to find more info about it on google. ideally you want to be sure your color profiles are the same on both your desktop and laptop to coordinate the two. The contrast ratio of monitors can vary also. I know you have macs so use the monitro calibaration tool to try and get it right. If you wanna get it prefect you gotta get one of those devices likea huey but doing it by eye is usually fine. I like to test it by getting a well prodcued photo usually of a person and use that as the becnhamrk. Uually any inconsistencs will jump out on skintones which is a good test.

oh yeah i gotta do some enviros. characters are too fun sometimes.

I like the rendering in post 69.

Dude first i would liek to thank you for the Comment on my SB :), And i secondly I think you are a very talented artist. You seem to have a great grasp on everything atm, your line work is fanatastic and you colour is great. The sketches are sweet with the anatomy and figures. You character designes seem very polished and varied and your environments give a great sense of atmosphere, For the environments i would love to see a darker, less colourful kind of scene, somehting out of a horror film king of thing. Your persepective is greate too. All i can say is keep it up your progress is fantastic.
Keep it up man Its cool to see how you have progressed from first starting here, i am very much planning to follow in your footsteps of progress lol

Do not worry my friend I am sticking to what i set out to do, and that's to become a respected artist, right now its kinda hard since no one on CA takes me that seriously, but they will soon find out just how serious I am. Thanks, I am bookmarking your sketchbook! =-] BTW your quick figure drawings on page one are very inspiration, are they from pose maniacs?

Feel kinda drained right now, ill get back to it once i re cooperate from work, Damn FedEx...

Hey, you beat me to posting (I was looking at your sb when you posted in mine).
Promising stuff here, lots of variety. A little more focus on fundamentals though, perspective study looks good. If you haven't yet, I'd recommend you pick up rakugaKing by Katsuya Terada, lots of sketches there in a similar vein.

edit:
Holy crap, it goes for a $100 on amazon new! I don't think I payed nearly as much for mine a few years ago :/

Jmonsterdesign- Thank you very much for your comments. Yeps, those figure drawings are from pose maniacs! :p haha free life drawing! Yeah, man keep going strong. Don't worry too much about what other people think, I mean you're not here to please people. you're here to be a better artist, right? Sure, we need criticism and advices. But, you know that YOU're taking your art seriously. That's all that matters I think. I'll check you out soon!

iceman478- Hey, thanks buddy!

Hey peeps! :D

Meh, not much to show, but anyway a couple of concepts and roughs for my 'Archimboldo' inspired "face" project. Take a guess what the profession I chose. if you can't tell, then I guess I failed to deliver :p But, maybe guess when I post up the final. I'm in the process of inking the final and my teacher was picking on me the whole class, almost to a point where she wants to decapitate my left nut! Why? 'cos I didn't want to do the inking the way she wants me to! Arrgh! Pms!

A COW i never got the chance to finish. May work on it again when I'm free...
And a couple the characters I did on Saturday. My aim here is basically to come up with 'regular' looking people you'd see these days as opposed to fantasy or sci fi etc. I used my favorite pens and brush for the inking and the color was actually pretty fast. Anyway, back to work! :D

Cool characters, and clean style. I don't know if I'd see a cowboy with guns drawn walking around though, maybe one day haha.
If you're going to finish that cow piece I rekon use ref for the skull, looks a too cartoony I rekon.
But yeah I rekon for portfolio do more characters like this, I rekon Advertising want stuff like that.
IF for games I rekon the style could work for mobile games becasue I think they use flash content. Looks kind of vector.

Hey guys!

I've been a month or so since I last post here. Well, there's a reason and that is because I've been busy with my portfolio. Here are somethings that are in the folio. Now, all I can do is that someone would be interested in my work during our end of year exhibition whic h is next week. So, fingers cross! Need to make me some money! :P I'm also kinda busy with some concept work, it's pretty laid back at the moment, but I'm hoping to get a full time job soon. It's good to dream :)

Diaforetikos- Thanks man! If it wasn't for you I wouldn't be bothered posting here for a while, since I feel like I need to just focus on more study, but you kinda remind me that with the help of other artsists like yourself who'd give their critics about my work, then the better I would be. So, from now on I'm not gonna shy away even when I'm busy. I'll try post whenever I can :D

Ok thanks!

My plan is to create 10 finished illustrations by the end of January and will try and apply to a couple of places hoping to get a place as a full time concept artist or storyboard artist.
