Wish I could have put a little more thought into this piece, but I've got Shirow on the brain and a big midterm to study for. :)
Looking forward to your pics!

Here's a quick quickie(10 mins), I've considered that if such a savage creature has two heads it would constatly be in argument with itself.....done in painter, chalk 'n pencil, i like how it's skin turned out....

nice idea to make a modern ettin, Silentbrain.....plans to work it out?

I assume there are female Ettins too
Either that or its a really tall pair of cojoined twins sharing a body :D
The head on the right has spotted you standing in the forest and is about to bitch slap you in to a pancake.

I thought I would go for 2 heads one neck instead of two heads two necks. Mostly experimenting with color on this one. :)

Cool commando ettin Silentbrain
Cool idea Velo. I had something similar in mind.
One faces the front, the other faces the rear. Mine looks more like a two faced troll than an ettin though. If I have time I'll take a crack at painting it over later tonight. Things are a little hard to make out in this sketch.

Ettin with love problems, and another with family problems... or the other way around. Didn't quite know how to crop this one. Found it a bit wide in the end, so I cut it in the left side.
silentbrain : kewl as always.
roger : looks like split personality

Well i thought id jump on the bandwagon. Been observing the different pieces here and i must say they are very very inspiring. Amazing artwork.
I wanna learn how to draw and i thought this would be a good way of learning so. Great tutorials and all.
Made this modern ettin thing. Heads are way back, but damage was done before i could rectify it :( Dont have no wacom tablet or anything. Just a marker and paper :)

My day just slipped away, and I really meant to get to this, unfortunately, I only got to the sketch phase. I guess since it is the daily SKETCH group, I shouldn't beat myself up too much.
It's quite possible this is my first post here. I like this place quite a bit, and hope I can post more as time goes on. Hope everyone digs my Ettin.

My first day at conceptart.org.
I was going to start the dsg tomorrow since I've been very busy, but the lack of motivation to do actual work led me to sketch this.
Didn't have time to clean it up or ink it.

I wouldn't have chimed back in to this thread, but I have to say that what renone did is disgusting. So many of us work extremely hard to do the best work we can do, and this guy can't do quality work, so he completely fabricates it. and doesn't even do a good job of that. I would have left this alone had it only been this case, but on looking at his site, I see he just took a screen grab from Ninjai and claimed it's his own? What a joke you are.
http://home.jam.rr.com/renone/id18.htm
The rest of his work is some of the worst Bryce I've ever seen. This guy will go nowhere with any sort of "career".
Renone, take down all the crap you have that's not yours and show some respect to the people here who have put the time in to actually learn to create decent work of their own.

Renone, how can you possibly try that shit when you see the reaction to art fraud around here almost daily? Be honest with your art now or it will come back to ruin you.
On another note, the DSG's lately have been great. As soon as I find reliable time I'm going to get in on this with everyone. :chug:

Renone:
If you want to improve your skills as an artist.
Donīt steal others work and claim it as your own.
Donīt do paintovers, It doesnīt improve your skills.
Do studies. A study is when you draw what you see on a separate canvas.
No tracings, or paintovers whatever.
If you use reference.
State clearly where you got it from.

I thought Iīd take some time to give C&C. Iīm not a pro or anything. Hope Itīs appriciated:
silentbrain:
Itīs a cool design, too bad that you didnīt have more time,
I would have liked seeing something that shows the scale of the giant.
Madgiraffe:
Hey, you caught attitude, character and size.
It looks massive, bigger than human but not giant size
(6 metres or more) If you wanted It to look bigger some size reference wouldnīt hurt,
like a tree or a poor guy they are arguing over.
Kexe:
It has that ancient greek feel to it, I like it.
If you choose to develop it I have a small crit. Its torso is the precise center of the pic.
Bend the the HIS right arm a little and lean his torso slightly to the left of the picture,
without changing the pose much.
I think it would look better.
Pox:
Your pic has everything, scale,
good looks, impending doom :)
It would be cool if you developed this.
You could try to individulize each head, give them different haircuts,
add stuff that enhances the sense of scale,
like jewlery and clothes made out of everyday objects.
I think It would make a great painting.
forkface:
It looks menacing,
huge but not giantsize so a sizeref wouldnīt have hurt.
Oh, and give It a crotch of some kind.
roger:
Thatīs a great background :)
No, really I have to try that, It looks fun.
What could it have taken to draw that tree?
5 seconds? for practically no effort you get instant scale.
And the running people help too. Good expression on the ettin.
Velo:
I also had an variation on that idea. Itīs on an old sketch of mine.
Canīt see your sketch at the moment though.
Scumworks:
Nice idea, having It sitting and moping by the water.
You could have made It a bit more visible though and
the reflection should reflect the underside of the ettin.
I think that the sillouette would be similar though.
(Btw, I think you killed the banana. Itīs not moving anymore...)
Plaf:
Thats one mean looking ettin, nice mood in it too.
Doronila:
Cool design, I donīt see what you mean by the heads unless you
wanted them leaning forwards.
Looks good anyway.
Mrkayne:
A lean and hungry ettin, nice scene.
Ilustre:
Hah, cool idea, although sizref couldnīt have hurt, he looks almost human sized to me.
Nice relaxed muscletone.
Beatnik:
Glad you could make it. :) Uh is he dancing?
Danielh68:
Looks positivly giant, I like the tiny heads.
Drewgilbert:
Canīt see your pic, and your webadress leads nowhere?
bOO:
Your ettin will never be bored it seems.
Those abs need to be a lot rounder and softer and they shouldnīt be
standing out like that.
DV8:
Canīt see yours :(
lavhoes:
You can almost hear it
bellowing with anger.
I really like the mood and lighting.
It looks huge but i keep looking for some size reference.
I have some crit on the anatomy.
Muscles donīt bulge out like that, all at the same time.
Some muscles should be tensed up (mainly upper torso, pecs & shoulders) and
others more relaxed.(lower torso and legs according to position.)

Try again in a bit if you still can't see it. I get the same thing with other people's from time to time here, but it's never consistent, and it never lasts. It's working for me.

there is no rule on "paintovers"
the image of the ettin figure was mine taken by me
the ninjai pic on my site was drawn and scanned by me not a c"paintover" never claimed it to be my own
and for the bryce i have never used but that one time so it probaly is the worst you ever seen but nonetheless i bet you first drawings were the worst i ever seen so lets get back on topic and stop downing someone for doing something they thought was a good idea
i admit if "paintovers" are a no no then thats fine
as far as carrers go i have one of those
drawing is just a hobbie
something i find fun
i think the day you forget why you started drawing and start seeing it as a carrer and not something you love is the day you failed as an artist
i will contunue to post whatever i feel is art to me
oh wait we do live in a country where we have that right
dont we or do you feel all art should be what you DICTATE
thanks for the heads up on no "paintovers"

November 5th, 2003, 02:46 PM
oh yeah one more rant
as a profesional that has worked on so many children themed projects (mr Drew.) i would thiink you knew how to speak to people...the first step in being a "professional" is communication skills and i think you have none of the above
i am sure in the begining of your "carreer" you had negative responses all around you ...maybe not going as far as saying your a joke...but negative none the less ..so thnaks for shooting someones likes and hopes down and stamping your professional opionn all over them i think people like you make the art world a horrible place and a good reason why most people do not post there stuff....there is no strict law here just people having fun and getting feedback ..or so i thought
maybe i stand corrected
oh well i do believe i am going to leave this alone and clog up the thread
oh yeah drew you have a very nice site and your work is very nice

Thanks for the advice =D
I'm only 19, still learning anatomy and stuff. Starting out, I've been told I should concentrate on shape and placement and then move on to stressing and relaxing muscles once I've learned where they go. I've got my standard-issue Bridgman's Complete Guide to Drawing from Life, plus all of Loomis' old books. They've been great so far.
Any other anatomy-related tips I should keep in mind?

Anyway, wonderful stuff folks, there's tons of character here! hohoho~
Didn't know Ettin was THAT BIG though! Wowzers!
Mad Giraffe, hito, scumworks, paperslayer, thanks!
Wish I was able to think more of the character though...military/police doesn't mean that it's automatically a faceless dog of war, I should have known.
