I was trying to go for a "style"... that I totally did not get correct. Here it is anyways...

These are great - love the design for John Carter especially. Feels a little like Leyendecker to me. That whole Rice Boroughs series were favorites of mine growing up - nice to see someone giving them some love.

Thanks for your tips, and please keep them coming. I'm trying to up my level of detail and quality, and these sorts of things help. I probably won't get back to fixing old images, I'll just apply the lesson to the next sketch!

Mmmm... good observation. Not making it to the poll with my Blood Moon Monk has made me want to up my quality of work to the level that I think I'm capable of. I had been shooting for quantity to try and build a larger portfolio, but it'd probably be better to have fewer quality examples.

It's hard though, I get impatient with paintings when they take too long.

Anybody out there with real advice on what entertainment design studios like to see?

My post from CHOW:
==========================================
Ok, due to the new requirements, here's my WIP stuff, final, and some thoughts.

I've not included my WIP's in the past because I have very little time to do these weekly contests. I'll often do some quick tiny thumbz in my work notebook and jump right to painting. It's not an ideal situation, but in order to hit the deadlines with a more "finished" piece, I typically have to work this way.

http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e16/Orion9282/Orion9282_CHOW125_WIP.jpg

This started with some brief internet research... I usually find images that have bits and pieces of elements that I want to include (a headpiece, a bracelet, etc.) These sketches represent a few approaches: minimal adornment on the left, clothed, and a mixture between the two on the right.

I decided to move forward with the half clothed/half bare skinned concept with more regal elements added. Experimented with a headdress, and tried to make him look like he was overloaded with stuff as a symbol of wealth to the gods: feathers, gold, medallions, body-paint. Also, I tried to make his expression reflect acceptance of what's about to come. Painted it up, and here's the final.

http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e16/Orion9282/Orion9282_CHOW125.jpg

I'm somewhat satisfied with it. After not going to the poll with the Monk, I decided that I wanted to spend a bit more time on my renderings to up their quality level... their level of detail. I think my Harley Quinn had a bit more detail (as someone pointed out in my sketchbook), so that's what I tried to do. I think some of that is working for me.

What's not working is that his costume kinda looks like a costume. There's something that's not believable about it... might be the colors, might be the over-the-top-ness. might be the way that I rendered some of the "fabric" portions. Oh well... onto the next...

C&C welcome...

yinteck
September 6th, 2008, 01:00 AM
This is good. Maybe you can make the costume more, 3D ? i mean for the detail of the costume. Area like the shoulder, feet and the head. Make in pop out more. Just my thought..

very nice work man, you sure show you know what you're doing with the digital media, looks like you use it not as an imitation of traditional media, but as pure digital, wich i guess is very good.Nice characters, very cool brushwork :)

yinteck - Good points and thanks for the crit. I'll be sure to watch out on the 3D-ness of the costume elements. Looking at it now, a lot of the portions (shoulder pad etc.) look like pieces of paper and probably could benefit from further detailing.

Ceejay, TheGnoll, pijus - Thanks all!

From IDOW 77
I kind of interpreted this brief a little differently I suppose, but here it is anyways.

http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e16/Orion9282/Orion9282_IDOW77.jpg

Thumbnails
Starting in the center, I thought it might be funny to have a futuristic interpretation of a mobile home... maybe illustrated with a cel-shaded cartoon style and an alien low-life coming out of it.

I moved to the idea that large space ships kinda become houses... like the extended cruise ship in Wall-E, except that each individual person would have this ship/house (sketch on the left).

Description
(Right thumbnail and final image) I then moved to the idea of a post-war society where dilapidated army vehicles were re-purposed as housing. Similar to how the Philippines re-purposed old war jeeps, converting them into public transportation. Link. So, shown here in the final image is a decommissioned troop transport that has been retrofitted to serve as a home. It is still mobile due to its prior purpose and many of these are in service as shelters to those lucky enough to obtain one.

It's been a while since I've posted (I say that too often), and environments aren't my strong suit, but here goes anyways...

The idea here is that a malicious attack begins a new decade... a decade of new rule, a decade of war... etc. I wanted to include the figures in the front to tell the story that they might be inhabitants returning to the city, or they might be the attackers (one of whom is feeling remorse?). C&C welcome...

Cow164 entry... I'm sorta so-so on the head design, but I've done a number of variations on it and like this one the best... (been a while since I've posted, hopefully that'll be the last time i say that)

The idea here is that they're in a sort of in-between evolution state. Being aquatic, they have semi-transparent bodies, showing most of their internal organs which showcases their strength as a species that is worthy of having their evolutionary cycle sped up (formations of complex structural systems, respiratory, etc.). Their outer details (being all tentacle-y) is like some sea-dwelling creatures, but is also reminiscent of simpler single-celled organisms, showcasing their early evolutionary state. Hope you like... C&C welcome...

Great work, I like your brushstrokes. My only problem is with the figures in the EOW piece. They look weak and not very thought out. I know figures aren't the focus of the challenge, but I think a little bit more time could have been spent refining them just to stay consistent with the quality of the enviro (which is really good).

Eddieee: You nailed it right on the head. I'm not happy with those figures and tried to push 'em back via taking their contrast down in the most recent rendition. Ugh... I might have to just cut them out altogether. Thanks for the crit! I totally need more of that if I'm going to get better...

Im really diggin the idea of this piece and comp of this piece.
Some crits- The overall painting is filled with the same level of saturation so things start to feel flat.
I did a quick saturating and desaturating of the fore and background to try to separate them more. Hope this helps.

Orion9282
January 12th, 2010, 08:45 AM
leJeanX3: THAT IS AWESOME. I love what you did to the figures with the blue edge light! The saturation fix makes a lot of sense too... I toyed a bit with the atmospheric depth via contrast, but not saturation. I'm definitely going to make these changes. Thank you so much!

Hey Orion, you've got some great digital art skills as you're artwork conveys brilliant characterisation. I know you said that you got the style wrong for the Daisy Belle image but I absolutely love it as it reminds me of a warner bros cartoon but a lot more grown up and detailed.
I'd love to see you change the mesh on Harley Quinn to flow more with the contours of her body as it's such a cool adaptation but that just distracts me eye a little. Your creature designs are great and they really feel other worldly (the arctiv dinosaurs my favourite one).
I'm gonna subscribe to this thread as I'm pretty confident there will be some great new images to come. Chris

himself/chris: Thank you for your compliments! Also, thanks for your feedback on the Harley Quinn... mesh is hard. :) I wasn't totally satisfied with how that turned out, but it was before I had the mesh transform tool in PS. Thanks also, for subscribing... I hope you're right about the images to come!

Here's an illustration that I did for a friend... It'll be getting color soon... SO MUCH TO DO!

@Danlucas: Photoshop. Thanks for the compliments! I love what Painter is capable of, but I am just so much faster in PS. With the CS4 update, I feel like some of the smoothness is more refined, like Painter is/was. I use Painter if I'm looking for a specific effect, like watercolor, etc.

@Elpez: Thanks!

@Tigermilk: You know what, that's a great suggestion actually. I've been using more and more reference while I paint, and looking at masterworks would probably be another great resource to pull from. Your stuff rulez, by the way.

I'm loving your technique and some of the charactors on the 1st page, especially the 1st one-but I don't understand what the object is on the guys back? is it part of a vest? jacket? Is it metal? Wngs? The rest of him is done very well, but I don't get what's on his back?

Crow,Lennon - Thanks for the feedback... I'm really trying to push myself in different ways recently. Let's hope it pays off.

This quick sketch was sorta inspired by the DSG topic of "FORLORN PILOT STANDS ATOP THEIR RUINED, FALLEN, MECHA", but really, I just wanted to paint a face. I tried to use more references here, and I think it paid off as compared to some of my older sketches. I need to continue to add more detail to my drawings.

For those out there who might check this, I have a question. Tigermilk suggested that I do master studies, and I think that's also a good idea. However, I'm not entirely sure which masters people might recommend? I know the four renaissance masters, rembrandt, degas, etc, but can people recommend other masters? Or specific pieces?

Also, for those in art school... are masters studies common practice?

Thanks in advance...

Sorry for my absence... I got totally tied up with the day-job for the past... however long. As I've done for the past few years... like someone trying to diet with every turn of the new year... I'm going to try to keep up with the entertainment design drawings.

To your questions that you asked 9 months ago:
xissburg - Photoshop only. I use paths when I want something super clean, man-made machinery-ish. I rough out a sketch, then path-work key areas of color, then airbrush the highlights and shadows. After that, I'll add the details and fine pencil-lines.

Geeshin - Thanks! And yep! Way to catch the GetBackers sketch. Few people know about that series.

Sarbro - Thanks!

Good stuff. I think the last two pieces you've done are showing improvement. The last Chow is looking good and I really like that aircraft you did, looks great.

Great pencils, man. The environment piece looks good too, but the temple seems too light. Not too sure, tho. Anyways, nice work.

Lovely work so far! I really really like your last sci-fi painting -- for a quicky it looks really defined and well done. The only crit I have is lies in your color paintings -- try to make the colors blend together a little more, perhaps by utilizing atmospheric light or even just by giving them an overall hue (warm, cool, et cetera). Practicing by using overlay layers.

Overall, lovely work!

Thanks for the feedback, all!

@Sapphire - Yes, color is something that I'm working on... thanks for the advice. I should probably try more washes of color as opposed to local color only.

Ok, so I'm not totally satisfied with this one, but it was a big learning experience for getting back into the groove of painting.

Beautiful sketchbook! Very varied style, I love that. My one tip would be to work on your digital paintings of human faces. Sometimes they come off as mechanical and dead rather than alive and full of character. Like your pre-zombie dinosaur. xD I love that little guy.
Keep it up! Really nice work.

Hi orion, the last horseman painting is great, thanks for sharing. Are the lighting/glows done with a soft brush?

Thanks all for the feedback and comments.

Dana - Yeah, good observation... I enjoy product design, and therefore a bunch of my character stuff can be robot-y. Working on it...

Pisces - Mixture of soft/hard. I started out with a hard round brush that has a good taper from 100% opacity to 0%... then touched it up afterward with a soft brush to get that glow effect.

Some sketches from the sketchbook... Photo ref for one from The Sartorialist (http://thesartorialist.blogspot.com/)web blog, and another is a Travis Charest copy..

CGHub is holding a character challenge where you illustrate megaman characters in the medieval (dark ages) setting. Anyways, here's my BombMan.

ID is definitely your strong point, really nice clean perspective and designs!

your anatomy gets a bit muddy sometimes, as in proportions, shapes, or poses... take a look at gesture drawing perhaps?

NeonDuck - Thanks for the feedback... Yeah, I'm still working my way out of my comic book background. I'm looking to start a figure drawing session soon, so hopefully that'll help.

My continuation of Megaman 1 villians, re-envisioned...

Thanks all for the feedback. Man, second time someone has mentioned my anatomy woes. I need some help!

Can someone give me pointers? Paint overs. Comments. Anything? I thought these last few were better than the ones at the beginning of the sketchbook?

I learned the 90's comic anatomy (Jim lee, mcfarlane, portacio), which I think has totally effed me up in terms of realistic proportions. I know I need to do more reference drawing... But still, feedback would help a lot.
