ROUND #123 :: THE BLOOD MOON MONK
-------------
DESCRIPTION
The Blood Moon Monk:
A strange figure with no particular religion or philosophy tied directly to him. He travels the world in search of knowledge - both of himself, and of the universe. To him, to be is to know, and only in knowing there is being.
He seems to only wander into populated areas just when there is someone who needs to be 'taken care' of. This be a young man who needs only to be set back on the right path, or someone - something - much more dangerous, for which only lethal force can be used. Somehow, this strange monk just seems to always be in the right place at the right time...
Notes:
- He is almost a vigilante, but he has his own set of rigid rules and morals that he abides by - he is first and foremost a monk, second a man.
- We're looking for a more eastern/Asian feel on this one, but don't let this limit you.
- The Blood Moon is his emblem. You aren't required to use it, but keep it in mind.

Those are great sketches Dimagyan! :)
My first Monday morning doodle. Not much to it yet other than a bloke in a cowl with a beard. Seems to be an archetype though, so the thing is to try some lateral thinking...
Edit: Sketches... so much for thinking outside the box! Worked on the first a bit more, which I'll probably expand on the composition as it pushes the 3/4 limit, and the perspective on the outstretched arm is wrong. The one in the market looks too much like a Dimagyan... AGAIN! Duh!

another great chow :) go go gadget, drawing mode.
btw: I'm thinking of a Vampire Hunter D, Jubei Kibagami (Ninja Scroll), Donovan Baines (Darkstalkers), Oro (SF III) kind of mish mash. A lone wanderer who knows how to defend himself but maybe at the same time looks like an easy target (the Oro influence) as well. Expect some heavy Capcom/Udon influence on this one :D

Hum. I might allow it, but I don't want any futuristic-looking monks. If he looks like I could take him out from where you've placed him and plop him a hundred years back with no one looking at him funny, then I'll let it slide... maybe. :P

Blood Moon, Ikuru. It is another term for a solar eclipse or a (an!) harvest moon. And according to Wikipedia also a Mayan Deity.

going for the kill shot this time.
DIMAGYAN: Great sketches! I envy the fluidity of your figures. My favorite is the 2nd one. The design looks very fresh and unconventional.
Poshspice: That's a great shot, reminds me of Snape for some reason... I would not want to cross him!
feifeicreate: Cool design! his shoulders look a tad skinny. I really dig his shoulder pad and his shoes.
Wiggers: looks like a Japanese monk :) solid sketch, waiting to see more!
skorpi: the gestures are really nice. The particular hair reminds me of the last dynasty in China - I'm not sure how historically accurate you are going for, but the pigtail hairstyle was worn by non-monk people. Monks had their hair shaved in general.

Nice ones dimagyan ! get to work ! :]
posh, something tells me you're gonna explode this round... pretty cool attitude on that character !
feifei, careful with your line ! I'd go a bit more smooth and accurate. The less the better ! You got an idea going on, so go !
wiggers, looks good man. add in some details and stuff. if i was to take a normal pose, i'd catch up with lots of details and a kind of story. anyway, get busy !

thank you guys for the comment. I want to go with a tibetan style monk, someone from a cold weather with a myesterious past (don't they all have mysterious past?) ...eh....that's pretty much the plan for now LOL...
Sir Bret: LOL...creative thinking! I think he does fit in the nerdy scholar/killing machine type...
DIMAGYAN: I really like your first design, I think he looks mysterious.
Poshspice: Nice...I always love Arabic style :D ....eh...this is a arabic style right?
Wiggers: Japan...I like it so far, but I feel that it's a bit too straight forward...I know this is just a very very early design, but I think it would be more interesting if you could push the style a bit more.
skorpi: Chinese LOL, Qing dynasty. Nice movement.
nightblue: He really looks lethal...LOL. Love that head piece...very interesting. Hope to see more.

Nice start everyone! I'm happy to use this as another excuse to doodle during lunch break. My entry isn't anything special so I'm going to see if I can think of something a little more unique. Maybe a western Franciscan monk instead of an eastern Buddhist, perhaps? So far, my guy is looking like a tattooed Sailor Moon reject mixed with Guild Wars.
Dimagyan-I'm really diggin the more arabic look of the first sketch. It's something unique in this mountain of bald guys we seem to be building.
Poshspice-I'm with you on the lateral thinking. I can't seem to escape the asian bald monk either. What can we do to be different? What makes one a monk? Is it a look of austere peace? Or can it be an annoying guy named Monk on TV who manages to reveal things about people? Things to think about. Your guy reminds me of a wizard at the moment, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. I like his forehead marking.
Feifeicreate-looks like we both have the same archetypes in our head. I love the beads in his hand and the overall clothing design. Keep going with it!
Wiggers-Your pose is stiff, but this is a concept thread and not an illustration thread, yes? I think as a concept it's looking good. I like the unique sallow look of his face and expression.
Skorpi-I'm digging that last pose with the uplifted leg. I was considering doing one like that myself! It's very traditional. I also like the simplified line style you're sporting. It's reminiscent of brush painting.
Nightblue-Now there's a monk I wouldn't want to mess with! Talk about solving someone's problems with forced love O_o
Sir Bret-I'm not quite sure this fits with the non-contemporary push of this challenge, but it's a good start none-the-less. Gotta love the crowbar of monkish love!
MJ Alcazar-I'm digging the hanging scrolls? at his waist and the design overall, but watch that far hand (his left hand on our right). It's looking a bit too twisted to the point that it seems broken at the wrist. He strikes me as piraty somehow. Not sure why. Maybe it's the beard?

I might have a go at this. Is anyone else old enough to remember the cult 1970's TV series Kung Fu? Starred David Carradine as a wandering monk with some pretty neat kick, chop, nerve hold, star throwing, skills - and he could play the flute. Bet there's some footage on the net somewhere.

Thanks for the crits on mine!
Dimagyan – Love these sketches despite what you say. Fresh and energetic!
Feifeicreate – Thought your Red Sonja was a great take on her! I think the pose is excellent on your monk, but if you think you can come up with something different, I look forward to it.
Wiggers – Love your characters! I think you can come up with a more exciting pose, but the design is working well. Why do we always draw priests and monks with a staff? I can’t help it either…
Skorpi – Smashing start. Working through initial sketches really refines your character because you’re not concerned with detailing but rather with capturing the essence in a few strokes.
Nightblue – Loads of dynamism in your start, and the outfit works well. I see you’ve got the blood moon in as well. Perhaps make it clearer as to what is going on with the other guy’s head. Is he lifting him by it?
Vorace – Fab pose! You’re another one who gets his sketches in at lunchtime eh?
MJAlcazar – I’m really enjoying your posts. You have some great ideas and designs, and yes your anatomy needs a bit of work, but there’s some real thought going on.
Ladydove7 – Cool sketch, but as you’re going to change it I look forward to what you do with a western Franciscan. :)
Pixeltuner – The pose is fine, but right now he looks more like a strongman than a monk, however the ‘thousand yard stare’ look in his eyes is very appropriate.
Mimer – The sketch is smashing, but show us his eyes! Remember that in a character brief we should be able to see the ‘character’ or personality, and a lot of that comes from the eyes, unless he hasn't got any..! Now there's a novel twist on the character eh? You can have that one! ;)
Agnostes – Wonderful sketch! Once again I hope we see his face, but this has lots of confidence in it!
Tomwaits4noman – The black and white face thing is a cool idea! Does it reflect an inner conflict between light and dark? If you’re going for the moon and halo thing in the last sketch I don’t think you’ll need the crouched figure. It would detract from the design element.
JPedro - Just missed you! Your stylisation and posing here is top notch! The intensity of the chap on the right is my favourite so far, but the pose on the left is really interesting!
Hope I got everyone so far...

mj alcazar : thanks, I got the scary part then :p
posh: Yeah, he looks more like a beatdown monk.. But like I said, I'm gonna lose the whole bald shao-lin type of character and try some different stuff. I remember Don Lawrence's Storm comics having some cool monks with a different look in them and at the moment I'm watching the whole Star Wars saga again (1 to 6, just finished 2..) and that also gives a shitload of inspiration costumewise. Even though it's sci-fi the outfits look pretty much 'old' especially on Naboo. Enough food for thought to think of some mysterious and strange looking monk-dude. :)

Really great topics lately O_o
DIMAGYAN I like these a lot. Particularly the second one. Great pants :P
Poshspice marvelous! Love the first (technically fourth too) and the second. The second piece is especially great. Fantastic storytelling. I say you should go with this one =) Love that cultural look
feifeicreate nice design. You might want to make him less slim though :)
Wiggers Great concept. Reminds me of Samurai Champloo for some bizarre reason :P
skorpi nice ideas. Like the first one a lot, but kind of hard to see him in battle xD You could put a bunch of candles around him in a circle and remove the books. It would give it a mystical look.
Nightblue love the large beads! he looks deadly :) watch the placement of the feet though. Looks off balance at the moment.
Vorace full of power and serenity at the same time. Great pose :) Would love to see a little more of his face rather than his profile. Arms and legs look a bit short/small though in comparison to the rest of his body (I'm counting like 5 1/2 heads or so)
MJ_Alcazar Like the scrolls on his belt. See attachment for fixed hand :)
ladydove7 love the tattoos. Watch the foreshortening.
Pixeltuner niiiice. :D In a way he almost feels like a genie. Pose maybe? O.o
mimer absolutely love the hat. Maybe add more details for more points of interest?
agnostes awesome dynamic pose. I'm a sucker for clothes fluttering in the wind :P Hope you're going to put the environment you described.
tomwaits4noman finally some dark looking monks! :D I LOVE that post directly in the middle (in which he is crouching with a sword directly behind him). Willing to expand on that one? :)
jpedro fantastic thumbs. Love you pencil shading. Love the left most pose. Maybe you should combine the moon staff and the aforementioned pose?
MarkWinters love the thumb. Great concept :)
Phew... that took way too long O_O;
And here's my little doodle. Trying to give the character a darker, more bandit/outcast look. Doesn't look too eastern though =(

Juan Caruso: great studies of the head! They all look a bit similar though, as if they are from the same family. Why not branching out a bit?
cmalidore: I like the sketch on the first page to the right, the 3-quarter one. Watch out for shoulder width, especially if you are depicting an adult male.
MJ_Alcazar: the style of your sketch reminds me of old-style chinese scroll paintings. The body looks pretty good, but if you are going for realism you might want to find some reference for the head.
septomin: That's some serious attitude. Love it. Keep going :D
feifeicreate: nice head studies, very creative designs there. I agree with your choice!
Ceyface: it might help if you develop the sketch more before jumping into colors and shading, or if you prefer to start from colors and shades try to break the silhouette more instead of making geometric shapes.
Eerin: That's some kick-ass pose and design. I like both. The first one might adhere to the brief better because he looks more determined and menacing.
MarkWinters: great start, love the soft shadings. Can't wait to see more!
jpedro: lovely sketches, with a lot of life in your characters. While I like the ones on the left, the hairdo makes the character look like a child. It's a little hard for me to envision a child carrying out justice with both wisdom and force. I like the right one best.
tomwaits4noman: I actually like the attack pose better than the one you are developing, which is also a nice illustration.
agnostes: great lines there, love the flow.
mimer: The design looks Japanese-inspired, I like the bows on his sleeves.
Pixeltuner: he looks pretty badass, i like his collar a lot.
ladydove7: I love the design, but watch out for shoulder width ;)
Vorace: the design is very fresh yet again! It'll be fun watching where you take this character.

Nightblue - yay! I got the body looking halfway decent. :) Oops, I kinda reverted back to my "cartoon/normal" drawing there for a sec with the head. Thanks for pointing that out, I probably wouldn't have caught that. :)
I like yours, the colors are nice. :) Plus, I like how he's dealing out the punishment. Can be taken both ways from the brief. :)
cmalidore - I think I like the one on the left better. The one on the left looks like Ang, the airbender from the avatar series. The resemblence is too much for me! but it does look really good, and I like the costume design of it.
septomin - Cool! I like it. The pipe is a good touch.
Eerin - I like both, the poses are amazing. :)
Markwinters - Cool! I like it so far. :)

cmalidore the only thing your right character is missing is an arrow tattoo on his head to look almost identical to Ang (http://darialois.files.wordpress.com/2007/12/avatar1.jpg) (Avatar: the Last Airbender D=). Too close a resemblance unfortunately. :(
Juan Caruso they look a little like goblins (especially because of the pointed ears). Don't know if that was the look you were going for or not though :).
Nightblue feet are much better now! :) I think the chest might be curving a bit too much outwards though. Great scene. I feel kinda sorry for the guy who's about to be thrown over the cliff haha xD and who said the monk had to be good? "taking care" of someone and leading someone on the "right" path is very subjective and can have a double meaning. =D muwhaha
Venger O_O great lighting! he looks almost like a holy being or something.

I think the question here is "what makes him a MONK, instead of an assassin, a magician, or just a plain warrior?"
Here's some comment:
mimer: I like the hat and garment, hope to see more development.
agnostes: I like the feel of it, sort of lonely and quiet...but for me, he looks more like an assassin instead of a monk...
tomwaits4noman : A medieval monk? Is he a good guy or a bad guy? i can't tell from your design at this point, especially the one with the torture chamber...I thought the guy is supposed to be a loner and one of the "Chaotic good" type...(although Monk can not be Chaotic good, they have to be lawful...)
jpedro: I like the oriental look of it, I like the middle one (the old guy), the far right one is bit too evil...I think...
MarkWinters: So he has a deity behind him? that's a great design, I think. And if you need to write some Chinese, let me know. ;)
Eerin : Thank you for the comment :) I have mixed feeling about the two you have, they're both very very good designs, but I like the first one for it's over all feeling and movement, and I like the second one for its design.
Ceyface Hope to see more. at this point, I feel that the anatomy is a bit off, maybe it's better to draw him naked first and put cloth on him later.
septomin A very different take on the monk, I like it. He looks ancient and wise... like Yoda... sort of....
MJ_Alcazar I like the second one better, the first one looks like a nice teacher, not a blood moon monk...
cmalidore I like the second one better, he looks more interesting to me. although I find him a bit too young...I kind of picture him like at least late 20 early 30....but it's just me...
Juan Caruso Nice head studies.
Nightblue Nice to see you colored him :D I like the overall design and perspective, but I feel that he could be more strong as a character, maybe add a little accessories, or make his opponent more evil looking? Just throw out some suggestions.
Venger I like the idea of showing him in action of helping people in need. Feel that maybe the composition could be pushed a bit farther? make it more dramatic?

Monk -(Greek: μοναχός, monachos), derived from Greek monos (alone), in modern parlance also referred to as a monastic, is a person who practices religious asceticism, the conditioning of mind and body in favor of the spirit, and does so living either alone or with any number of like-minded people, whilst always maintaining some degree of physical separation from those not sharing the same purpose. The concept is ancient and can be seen in many religions and in philosophy. (Wikipedia) See more here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monk) and here (http://www.google.com/search?q=define%3A+monk&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=com.google:en-US:official&client=firefox-a).
Note that: a monk can be a cenobite, a hermit, an anchorite, a hesychast, or solitary. (the latter one is the case which we have, I think)

I love Don Lawrence! I never got into Storm as much as I did The Trigan Empire. How he used to get at least two of those pages done a week is beyond me, plus other work!
The man was probably a maniac? :) I loved them both btw, I read more Storm (except the last few ones, didn't like them as much) than Trigan but they both carry amazing art nonetheless.

There are so many kind of monks, like said the word Monk is from the Greek monos (alone). Basically referring to a person who does not have sex, trying to find God or Liberation this way...
Some different kind of Monks.
Christian monks, Roman Catholic Monks. Anglican Monks, Vaishnava monks, and Buddhist monks, Sadhu's etc...
Heres something on a group of Shaolin Monks.
"On 21 July 1553, 120 warrior monks led by the Shaolin monk Tianyuan defeated a group of pirates and chased the survivors over ten days and twenty miles.[16] The pirates suffered over one hundred casualties and the monks only four."

DIMAGYAN Nice sketches man .Second one is my fav. Nice pose too.
Poshspice That`s a good start. Those lines hide some high skills. I like the second scene especially the facial expressions.
feifeicreatePretty nice start. Now you should work a little bit more on the perspective and line.
Wiggers Nice. I hope you come with another nice entry. I love the piece from "Dark Night Villains".
Skorpi Nice start. I think the first sketch matches very good the topic.
Nightblue Wow , that`s a really powerful monk. Nice scene.
Vorace This looks very nice. I like the pose and the colors. Can`t wait to see it finished.
MJ_Alcazar Your sketches show a lot of imagination. Try to correct a little bit the perspective issues. Don`t forget that lines have different intensities. Try to use some more pencils , like 3-4b.
Ladydove7 I like the character .
Pixeltuner Wow another powerful monk. Looks a little bit like Aladin`s Genie. Nice arms. The neck is a little bit exaggerated. I`m curious how it will look at the end.
Mimmer Nice monk. Be more careful with the lines.
Agnostes I like that pose !
tomwaits4noman Nice scenes man! the sketches are very nice. Especially the upper one. The guy with the moon on the back.
jpedro Sooo nice drawings there man ! One of the best on this topic.
MarkWinters Nice mood. Hope to see more details on that piece.
Eerin The first one is so nice. Nice pose and expression of the character!
Ceyface Heyy, are you using mouse? If you don`t have a wacom you should draw the piece on paper with pencils. You will feel much better and you will be more creative. Practice Practice Practice ! as you said.
septomin I like the pose and the attitude of that monk.
Juan Caruso Nice facial expressions !
Venger Great scene. Try to put more details on the monk , to obtain the "focus" on him.
DECYPL The environment is very nice. Try to focus more on the character. Nice colours and scene. The head could be a little bit bigger.
Daniel.C Very good sketches. I like the second one. Nice sense of perspective.
Giordan I love the face of the character man. But I must say you cand work a little bit more his left hand and the legs. The positioning of them isn`t that natural (like my english  sorry).
bluemoon Good start but we want to see more !
Kaizer The sketch shows you have imagination. Because we have a character challenge I say you could make a better pose. We want to see the whole character. Not only the profile. As I said upper , the line must have different intensities. Study more proportions and anatomy.
Casandra Beautiful portrait of your monk.
Arthemis IX Great colours and character. I suggest you to draw the ground , because he must stay on something. The wind effect is too obvious.
Phiew , while watching your designs I made a quick sketch of my monk.

Hey guys,
My first try here at the CHOW. and Damn! some amazing ones already... The red sonja was awesome too.
Ok. My idea is to have the monk taking a girl away from a hellish place. war and savages. He takes her under his cloak, that forms the blood moon symbol as an aura of protection. Nobody touches them.
I am still not certain on his design but I am certain on the environment so Ill focus on that a bit more before resolving the main characters.
Ok. cheerios

out with the bald, in with the old. Doodled on some costume ideas while on the train en made a decent linesketch out of one of them. Scanned, valued, bit of colour etc. Kept the pose more or less, only this one looks more 'sacred'. I looked up the Japanese characters for Blood and Moon btw, so they will eventually end up on the banner instead of the placeholder glyphs. :)

August 19th, 2008, 08:41 PM
thanks for the feedback!
poshspice: those sketches are great! the second and third specially, love the narration on them. i think the market/busy street is a reflection of the brief and (again) this type of characters...is an ideal shot to introduce the monks to the viewer as if he/she meet him in the street, and also relate the character to the everyday activities...so im guilty too of making the more evident take on the subject, i think...
anyway please go with the one in the market if you want, your sketch is more interesting than mine. waiting to see your final!
feifeicreate: i like the costume and the painted moon, keep an eye on the forms and the anatomy(specially in the head)
Wiggers:very nice...it really looks like a monk.
skorpi:nice sketches, i like the design of the character in the left low corner.
Nightblue:thats a big agressive monk!fit well the desription of the breef in my opinion specially the vigilante rol.
Vorace: very good, i like the feel of the image. im not quite sure if his head is too big or his arms are too short, thou.
MJ_Alcazar:nice take on the subject...looks like a monk. don't worry too much on the details, work first on the structure of the figure, once you have that part the rest is just fit the details a cording the body. watch some references or even better yourself in a mirror, do some acting to feel the pose you want to do. hope it helps.
ladydove7:i like th asymetrical take on the costume, just watch the anatomy and the perspective.
Pixeltuner: i like the second character.try to not crop the feet, make the entire figure or an "american plane", works better in my opinion.
mimer:i like the situatuion and the serenity feel. watch the feet position(you did the left foot ae right and viceverse)
agnostes:a more vigilante look...try to add something that tell to the viewer that he is a monk.
tomwaits4noman:i like the third sketch
jpedro: interesting ideas, i like the small sketch on the top of the page
MarkWinters:great athmosphere. i like the statue idea.
Eerin:second one definitly!...i like the feel and movement of the figure.and the little details that tell he is a monk are very well
Ceyface:nice sketch.try to not hide his face, hands and feet. face and hands are extraordinary elements to give personality to a character.maybe working in pencil and then block in colours?
septomin: very nice! i like the fact that he is an o more older monk.it has a distinctive attitude in the gesture.
cmalidore: i like the costume of the second sketch
Juan Caruso:nice heads, probably adding eyes could help to clarify that he is human.i like number 8.
Venger:very nice scene
DECYPL:very mystical i like the blue energy(?)
DanielC:very good sketches...probably you are right about been a bit off topic, maybe adding something less violent like bags, books...anything that bring the idea of a monk or at least a non warrior wanderer? the last one has a nice design
Giordan: buen diseño, es verdad que luce como un personaje emparentado con dhalsim, pero cambiando algunas cosas del traje y el rostro(especialmente el cabello podrian solucionar eso.
bluemoon:nice skecth
D.Labruyere:i like his costume and the details.very nice colours
Kaizer:nice idea.besides the hand, the principal thing that lack your character is the curvature of the torso...all the body in your character is in a straigth line.
the head also don't fit well in the body.you need more projection on the back of the head.hope it helps
Casandra:nice idea, remember the 3/4 rule for the final
Arthemis IX: i like the pose and colours.
RevoLverZ:nice sketch, is not very clear in some areas(like the right arm), nice pose. yeah, probably another expression could fit better the subject and the feel of your piece.nice update
haroldfay:nice scene, i like the details of the pile of books
marioucci:nice mood and background
Funkyskull:interesting, try to show more of the character
Thujon:nice sketch.the face don't match the head(is lower and smaller)
Pragmatist:looks like he is in some battle(the blood on his mouth and the position of his body.nice sketch.
Jason Snair:very nice.
thesaint:interesting aproach about the tatoo on his face.
vaughany_boy:looks nice.watch the perspective(the monk position don't match the roof perspective)
okay i think thats all the entries so far...
need to work on mine now

Nice sketches and starts everyone. I tried to stay away from this place so I can focus on my regular work, but some how it pulls me back in. I wish I knew how to quit you CHOW.
Crits for this page.
timothee, nice start. Could push the standing pose a little more, his left eye maybe a little big and too close the ear, my 2cents
D.Labruyere, nice update of color, love that warm & cool color.
c@s, nice quick ones. looking forward to what you develop.
agnostse, like the idea of cityscape Would love to see more of the monk though.
septomin, Like the character of his face, elbow holding cane looks a little thin to me.
Ceyface, Maybe start thinking about your light source night/day? what kind of shadow shapes would that make on your character. Try and find some photo reference with someone wearing a hooded robe with the kind of light you want on him. Making up stuff up out of your head is hard work, I am not ashamed to say I use photo ref when I need it, my 2 cents.
Decepticon217, Like your wip in b&w, tats are cool too.
feifeicreate, torso area looks good, proportion on the legs look a bit big.
Anyhoo...here's my wip before going to Zzzz land. Just the figure for now, going for more of the Ascetic Sadhu monk look. This monk uses his mind to control the out come of what would be a bad outcome. However his thoughts have the power to kill if necessary. Although I was tempted of drawing a hybrid monk from caine in kung-fu and Samuel Jackson character in pulp fiction. ha ha, A royale w/ Cheese.

I try to comment on as many people as I can. sorry if I miss anyone, PM me if you want comment (I'd be flattered LOL). so, here we go :D
Timothee: I like the his costume and tatoo. Nice take on the subject. would love to see more. the neck area is bit off though, probably because of the cloak. I'd push the accessory a bit more, but that's just my personal style...I think simplicity would work just fine.
D.Labruyere: He come alone really well! I like the lighting coming from blow, give him a very mysterious feel. Love to see more details.
C@S: Great sketches, looks like you're off a good start. I like the pose of the 4th one.
Agnostes: as of before, I like the general dark feel of work, but I feel that he's a bit lost in the background. I understand this is probably still too early to tell, hope to see more.
septomin: Here's our old wise monk. I like your take on him, he looks serious, yet carefree at the same time, nice :)
Ceyface: I like his costume and the staff. however, his proportion is a bit off. What works for me is that, I draw my character naked first, even for a character that's gonna covered with a rob or cloak in the end. I don't think it is the resolution that gives an art work a "finished" look. Pay more attention to details, refine your lines, give it a background...that's what makes it look "finished". as for the resolution, normally I stick with 300 dpi, that's enough for me. it's great to have higher resolution, but having your PC slowed down or crashing every 2 minutes could be really frustrating.
Deception: He looks really fierce! Nice Chinese character on his forehead...Knowledge...If it is tatooed on him, you might want to consider make if curve and whrincle a bit with the skin and the shape of the forehead. Love the tatoo, the pose and everything...looking forward to see more :D
dabble: Love the head peice. Looks really interesting. looking forward to see more.
Wiggers: Nice pose! confidence and strong. just one thing....what's that big white thingy on the ground? his minions? They look cute...(altought cute is probably not what you want for them...LOL)
Whistler: I like the pose. just a personal suggestion, since he has a lot of movement, you might want to try making him holding his weapen instead of carrying it. could be more interesting.
Chippie: I like your monk. But I feel that for over all composition, there's a bit too much background, and the figure is not strong enough. You might want to make the figure the focus of your work. I mean, I like the palace and the dragon, but I want to see more Monk :)
Harold: He looks really cool....but I'm not sure if futuristic is OK for this round, you might want to double check with CHOW leader though...But, again, I like him, if not for this round, I still hope you could finish him, could be a very interesting character.
Arhemis: Love the contract between background cool color and foregraound warm color. his costume looks nice too.
Hideyoshi: Nice costume and general feel of the peice. I know it's more about personal style, but I'd love to see more details.
WTFsteph: a kid? that's a rather different take of the subject...I've never pictured him as a kid...but could be fun, hope to see more.

marioucci, your painting looks nice, but the concept is about the design of the monk, so he should probably be more in focus and not so covered up etc.

That's pretty epic marioucci- good stuff. Composition seems a bit weird to me atm though as the cape thing is cutting the frame in half. May be just me though.
Not submitting this, since it's not much of a character-but it was fun painting it.

Ok, I sketches A LOT of different heads yesterday, and today I tried to go with something a bit different. I still want the oriental feel, but I was thinking that maybe this guy has ended up in the orient instead of starting out. He's traveled all over the place. Anyway, still a lot of issues to work out. Thanks ever so much for the crits. I promise, it may not seem like it, but I AM taking everything into consideration. Sometimes, it just takes me a bit to fully grasp the meaning of things. :)

Arthemis IX - I love your piece, it's so beautiful. I'd like to see his face though.
c@s - nice sketches, I like the fifth one the best I think. :)
timothee - I like it, the colors are nice.
The Whistler - I like it so far.
dabble - Looks cool. Very aztec like or is it mayan. I'll have to go look now.
feifeicreate - looks great! I like ur lines, very sharp. You already know about the feet/hands and legs, so I won't say anything. :)
Wiggers - looking good! I like the zombies, very cool.
Decepticon217 - looks cool, are those books? awesome. :)
D. Labruyere - I like it, the colors are cool. Something about his expression makes him seem a little confused, maybe it's just my screen though.
Ceyface - sharpen him up and add some detail. Pay attention to his face too. I usually put mine on 600 resolution, any more and my computer refuses to even acknowledge my existence. :)
edit: Beelow - I like it! his mouth is a little off, but overall, very nice design.

Just a doodle of the concept I have in mind. I hope I have time between projects to do a finished piece. Some awesome pieces up here already!
He wears a mixture of blood and ash as his sacred armor against those that would cause imbalance in the world. Little is known of the Blood Moon Order, but one thing is for certain in the underground. If one is after you....by the next full moon....you will be his armor.

Awesome stuff from everyone
Dimagyan: Really like the initial sketches, the fourth one is definitely the most unique especially with that hair... can't wait to see it finished
Poshspice: I really like the design, all the sketches are nice but I think the one you stayed with was the best since it made him look tough
Feifeicreate: Nice start, you have an interesting costume design going on... look forward to seeing the finished piece
Wiggers: I like the composition, I hope you have time to finish it
Skorpi: nice poses, I like the design of the bottom left guy the most
Nightblue: Very cool design and I like how you threw another figure to show off his size
Vorace: Awesome colors, his torso looked a little too long in the early sketches but the more color/ polish you put in the less it bothered me
jpedro: Great sketches, I like the guy on the far right the most... great expression on his face
Eerin: Beautiful sketches, I really like the pose and the ratty cloths of the guy on the right... can't wait to see more
septomin: really like the face and the idea him smoking a pipe
Venger: love the lampshade looking hat
DanielC: beautiful sketches, really like the spiky arm idea in the second picture
D.Labruyere: Great colors, I really like the strands with writing he's wearing
C@S: All very nice sketches but the last one is my favorite
Dabble: cool pose and I like his face paint
Hideyoshi: wow, everything looks great.. really love the mood and colors
Beelow: looks great so far, love the style... can't wait to see it finished
CeeJay: Awesome colors, I love the plant on top of his head

Howie: My only real uncomfortability with your design is how stiff it feels the way that outfit sits on the individual. It looks very stifling and restricting.
/ev: You're making us all look bad :p
MJ_Alcazar: I'm really worried that your foundation isn't as strong as it needs to be. I'm seeing a lot of hard lines there, but no sketchiness under them.... and while I'm sure you're doing some of it and then erasing - by looking at your lines I'm sorta thinking you should push the sketch phase further for anatomy layouts. His face is a bit problematic - ear being distanced from the eye more than it should be, cheekbones being a little offset. Really remember the skull structure under that skin. It's close, but not quiiiite there.
His book holding hand is also really funky. I dunno if that's a pinky but it looks kinda thumbish.... if it's a thumb, it's on the wrong side. Also when we hold a book our hands pivot in a bit, his is angled out a bit. Go hold a book in a mirror and watch your hand. Try to recreate that - matching in the planes as much as you can.
And the folds on the pants worry me - very vertical, not much flavor. Angles cause visual goodness, in this case I'd emphasis some diagonals from the front and down as it goes back. When I was younger I used to hang fabric from a chair or wrap it around the corner of something or clump it on the floor - put a light on the otherside of it, and then draw it. It taught me a ton about fabric and how it falls. It MAY be an exercise you'd get a bit from. Dunno til ya try :). So yeah, good stuff - but I'd punch up the foundation shapes a bit more on this one.

POSHSPICE: Don't you worry none! I wasn't going to just talk up from the protection of the web and not step up :P
Anyway, I had some time last night to knock out a couple of sketches. Of course I always take the opportunity to throw in some Western elements, so I gave him the sawed-off Winchester from "Wanted: Dead of Alive" starring Steve McQueen :) otherwise known as the Randall Special. Still working out the design so stay tuned.

Hi dudes,
I like the idea and it's my first participate in CHOW. Here is info about my Monk.
Juarez - his exactly date of birth isn't know. All we know is a fact that he died in 1520, executed by conquistadors, he had probably 28 years.
While he was alived, king Montezuma made him his right hand.
Juarez resurrected in 1940, as a Vampire. He stayed in Mexico, where he had enlightment in the sanctuary named after 'Virgin of Guadelupe'. Virgin gave him a mission and he has to prepare people for the next 'Jesus comming'.
He is a monk like 'John the Baptist' and he is an ascetic man [which means that he drinks only blood of heretics].
Now in 2008 he is still doing his job. He likes listen to Genesis.
http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z34/Mateo-89/JUAREZ-BW.jpg
This is my idea for the pose I did a rough sketch in pencil and inked digitally. I dunno yet how I'm going to finalize it, I'm not very well in digital painting yet.
I'm going to add him some aztec symbols, and american indian jewellery.

Matteo'89: You've got a good start, but I'm afraid to tell you that you're a tad off base. :) read the brief again and you might notice the "eastern/asian" note...

cmalidore - thank you. Yes, I tend to sketch, and then erase all but the needed lines immediately. I'll try really hard to stop doing that. My one art teacher i had back in middle school would yell at me as soon as he saw any sketch lines, so I tried really hard not to show them during any part of the drawing. :( no excuse, I shall put more effort into the sketch stage. :)
And well, the pinky is actually missing the top part of it, I wanted to make him look a bit like a fighter, and one of my friends has a missing pinky on that hand, sooo. But, I seem to keep running into trouble with that, I'll go and put the rest of it on! :)
That cloth excercise sounds really good. Yeah, he looks a bit like a court jester right now, huh? :D Will go back, thank you so much for taking the time to point those things out!!

So I went and reworked my sketch, but now am in a quandary. Is the character too small? (Not in terms of proportion, but as a subject since this is a character art focus) I tried cropping it down, but I wasn't too pleased. I welcome any other suggestions/crits.
Edit: Reworked my sketch as per suggestions. Probably going to go with this version.

Wow so many new sketches to look at! I will have to come back later with some feedback in a separate post:)
So here's my 2nd doodle that's turned into something I'm rather fond of. I took the idea of the Franciscan monk and ran with it and somehow he's turned into something of a knight monk with a leper's mask. He doesn't quite fit the oriental focus of this thread, but I had fun anyways.
Maybe I'll actually get the time to make something finalized this time. I'm really enjoying this concept:)

here we go again, cleaned up, hopefully with better anatomy after some great help in the feedback forums, and with some tinkering towards values and textures. any and all crits very welcome :)
having some problems to keep the tecture on the robe from looking flat and just pasted on top of the picture, should i soften it up in places? make it disappear more in darker areas?
ive worked very little with applying textures so im a bit stumped. texture applied by using overlay mode on a picture i took of fabric from a garment similar to what the monk has on.

It's good to use ref to learn, but then u have to make it ur own, and try to step away from the ref, take a bunch of photos, make some lines from them to see where the head starts and where the knees end etc, and start making up your own stuff... U can also take your own photos etc, many artists actually do that.

Ikuru - I've been loving your process the last few rounds, very nice thumbnails. I think the 2nd from the left and the 2nd from the right both have great character potential and expressiveness, even in this small form, though the contemplative nature of the one on the far right is also compelling if you are going for calm, controlled monk attitude. Run with it, dood.

Wow, some amazing stuff here!
zenichi - I like the sketches and the story. sounds good. :)
D@aniel - very nice. I like the feel of the piece.
mr. m - cool, remeinds me of a snake, waiting to strike. :)
cowboy surfer - I like the design. the pose is a little awkward to me. I would think the sword would be too heavy to hold like that while using both hands to mess with the beads. But, I could be wrong, it could depend on how strong you are or something
Beelow - I like it, the colors are awesome!
septomin - yours just keeps getting cooler. :)
Djinn - cool dramatic scene, I like where you're going. I think the guy is a little bit small though, since he's closer to us, I would think he'd be a little bigger. But, if you're going with a thing that has the demon coming out, leaving a smaller, weak body behind, it could work maybe. :)
haroldfay - I like the feel of the character. His left foot, the one facing us, is leaning just a little bit inward.
ladydove7- I like him, he looks cool. His left hand on top is a little awkward. I think it may be bending to far down, but I'm not really sure.
Jefita - looking good. :)
D. Labruyere - I really like your piece. Looking good.

MJ, I think I know what you mean about my guy's hand. I will fiddle with it if I get a chance to work on a final.
And here's the color test with some quick dodge and burn for an idea of the values. Fun stuff! I'm really growing attached to my leper monk. How does this color theme look to you guys?
For those of you who've been reminded of the Kung Fu series by this thread, they're going to have a new miniseries with David Carridine for the series this Sunday! It's amazing how he pulls off the whole 'monk' thing without a bald head or prayer beads, but a cowboy hat and a dusty shirt combined with words of wisdom.

I got curious as to what it would look like with color. I should probably stick to black and white. But, it was fun to do. And, as hard as digital painting is, oddly relaxing. :)
Vampirehungerstrike - I like it. Cool direction. :)
skorpi - wow, it's beautiful

i did another sketch last night(which i won't pursue), but then tonight chose to try and apply the meditating pose on the guy on the right side which seemed to work well for a few people(page2).
i also started coloring it.

Dimagyan, like the last sketch a lot!
Poshspice, the scene sketches all look like promising illustrations, but i think the guy with the most vigilante in him is the first one so far. he looks cool and also dangerous somehow, like he'd kick butt on cruise control.
Vorace, really nice colors and like the spell effects you added.
Eerin, i prefer the head and hood from the first sketch, has more of the bandit feel you say want to pursue. the second pose i more dynamic, but for a mysterious touch the first works just fine as well for me.
ikuru, thanks for those additional ref pics, they are all great!
MJ Alcazar, i think the issue with the hand in that one sketch is much better in your second version.
Venger, much like the costume of the guy and his staff.
Arthemis iX, nice colors and composition. needs a bit of work in terms of inegrating him into the image i think...just some indication of a drop shadow maybe? but looking good:)
Howie, i think the way that hood and the hat are connected together don't quite work yet, makes him look a little stiff and like he has a very wide neck.
Antne: wow, very nice thumbs! the second and the last two all work really well for me, both in terms of silhouettes, expression and design elements.
Beelow, great face! i think the hat could sit on his head a bit more firmly.
@Posh and Pixeltuner, i'm a big Don Lawrence fan, i'm going to try and catch up with the Trigan Empire books if i can get hold of them somewhere...Martin Lodewijk (who has worked with Lawrence on the Storm books), together with Romano Molenaar and Jorg De Vos are back working on Storm, the new episode (http://www.comic-combo-leipzig.de/_dev/xtc/images/product_images/popup_images/25597_0.jpg) came out great!

MJ_Alcazar Hey man! Good to see you experimenting with color, I like it! You've already got a really good sense for values, (definitely one of my weaker points) which has transferred very well. My only crit on your work in general, is your heads/faces, I think your faces tend to be too big for the heads. I suggest a bit of study on head anatomy, specifically: Do some studies on skulls/skeletons, I think it would help immensely. But I've watched you get better through just the past several CHOWS, keep at it man, do some research, you've obviously got the passion. =)
Decepticon Your work repeatedly impresses me, I think I'm going to start trying to make some pieces in your general style so I can teach myself more about values and contrast. I always look forward to your entries.
skorpi Those shadows from the window are AMAZING, and his expression is very meditative. (Is he burning pages out of that book!? Why would someone who loves knowledge do that?? Burning prayers is one thing, but I hope theres a story reason for that. Hehe.)
VampireHungerStrike I like it a lot, I'm looking forward to the next version. (Technically, you did follow the Eastern/Asian aspect of the brief, btw.)
Ceyface Very moody, he feels very powerful, but I cant tell whether that light is coming out of him, or whether he is entering a cave or hut, because all the light is coming from behind him and not casting light on his front at all.
jpedro very cool, great lighting, great expression, (I agree, the nose is problematic) but I think his tattoos on the rest of the body need to come out more, theyre very well done, just not vivid enough--and those seem to be the main draw of the concept.
Too many to comment on! Not enough time! Can't wait to see everyone's finals.

There's still present-day monks, so I figured, they would still be around in the hopefully not-so-near post-apocalyptic future? Hehe. Playing around with the idea of a militaristic monk, hope to reinforce the former some more, and not lose the latter completely. Ahh, I babble. Stiff fleshing this dude out, I'll work on it some more later.

So, after much fiddling, I decided I had to give up on the "Scene" idea for now, maybe I'll return to it some time and try to finish the scene. So this is my next updated WIP with just my monk. And I think this is pretty close to my final.

Got around to coloring this militaristic monk. Wanted his quilted trenchcoat to suggest that symbolic orange monk robe, and gave him the green hoodie and cargo pants for the military look. Hopefully I pulled off a little bit of what I planned out to do. By golly, twas fun though.
Final for now, maybe a few edits later.

Djinn: I like the idea of a scroll-bearing monk. The tats are pretty cool too. Crit: Practice more anatomy. I suggest reading Loomis, it helps me out a lot with my anatomy issues.
Beelow: Looking great. Colors are really strong. Looking forward to seeing the lower half finished.
Ceyface: The ornate robe looks cool. Good choice of going for a more neutral palette Crit: Put some more hard brushes in your strokes, right now it has that digital stamp / airbrushed look. Hope to see more from you!
Bah, was gonna write more, but I'm dozing off. Cheers everyone. Keep it fun, keep it coming!

edit1: the training resulted in their blindness and blood vessel bursting red eyes with white centre:hence their sect are called the blood moon. with their blindness they gain new vision of the world surrounding them, mapping out human emotions that are usually concealed or hidden between huma ns, with his chanting, the monk was able to touch, heal & soothens those soul that he encounter thus restoring imbalance, or dessent and other negativ e emotions.

thank you jpedro. I was hoping it would. I have trouble using my own hands for reference. My fingers are extra long and have hardly any cartilage, so if I hold them normal for me, they look broken. :) I'm glad I got a normal pose out of them. Yay hands!

Here's my wip. Haven't been able to work on this for the last couple of days so I'm feeling a bit behind the eight ball on this one. Hopefully I'll be able to get a chunk of time tomorrow to get it looking some what respectable for the burning thread. Some peeps where asking about the head dress. It's not snakes but that's a tempting visual. It's a sculpted wooden symbol for infinity and his hair was going to be wrap around it, at least that's the idea.
MJ Alcazar, I love the fact that you keep pushing yourself with all these drawings and re-drawings. I can honestly say that I have seen improvement in your drawings from the last couple of chows. His head size looks good to me.

close to my final, just need to check with mod, the text is scan from a famous dead calligrapher, but recomposed to horizontal. any rules that i'm breaking?
thinks the various "people" are distracting the composition... take it out?
still the blind monk that walks the earth, charting out his path from the emotional vistas, restoring balance/ soothing souls as he touches them with his chant.... short of a bamboo stalk as walking stick/ weapon?
